Kind of leaning toward this bumper at the moment:

To me there's too much open unprotected grill. I can foresee a deer or something finding it's way past the perimeter bar into the expensive stuff. But it's my unfounded opinion without any skin in the game.

Are they using it for whitetail or just defensive?

Whitetail and similar sized game. It's mostly found in bolt guns up here. Of course I haven't really looked to see if there's ARs chambered in it. I think I've seen it in youth models and smaller stocked mostly with some regular sized ones mixed in.

I loved my 2017 3.5l one of the nicest riding trucks I’ve ever owned.

It is a nice truck. My jeep decided to basically die in October of last year, I have/want to upgrade the wheels/tires/suspension and small things here and there since it's at about 85,xxx miles.

Well it has happened. I've got an accepted offer on a house, had to upgrade to a larger house to be ready for my son that's due in September.

Oh yea I think I neglected to pass that information on earlier..

Anyone run this caliber? Thinking about buying an upper for the girls to use deer hunting with me. 200 yards is a long shot in heavy brush up here. Light weight ar platform, adjustable stock and reasonable recoil for them. I can get into it for right at $300 as I already have assembled lowers. So just a complete upper & a couple mags.

People up in my area are using it more. Everything I've read about the straight wall calibers make it a great small person/short range round. I would like to get one and try it out but I have to be a responsible adult.

Long story short, my Jeep died, and I replaced it with a 2018 F150 with the 2.7 EcoBoost. I'll be updating with photos and the minor projects I've done already. Stay tuned.

The Jeep on it's send off:

All modern vehicles have explosive charges in them Bobby. Not just the airbags, but also the seatbelts.

I'm aware of the existence of the charges. It was more of the combination of copper and explosives, I tend to visit the forum when I'm really tired and without coffee. My brain thinks of things faster than I type them. Disregard some of what I type lol.

a program running in the background will fire an explosive charge which separates the heavy copper bus cables permanently interrupting the power supply.

Yea I'd like to avoid anything resembling that in a vehicle myself or more importantly my wife/son and future kids may be in.

Never underestimate the power of a good "pep-talk". I coached a parks and rec baseball team and gave them as close to an NCO pep talk as I could without some colorful language and they ended up winning the game.

Well his aren't 200'. He can raise or lower them depending on weather. They are maybe 75' i believe. They a little higher than a standard barn honestly. THe HAzMat rescue instructed that I deal with has his property upnorth off the grid with wind and solar and a generator as backup.

Between Suisun and Rio Vista there is a huge farm for them.

Actually, thinking about a small one for the ridge. Just enough to keep a little charge on the stuff.

There is a guy who bought one a few years ago up near the area I grew up in. Got paid money back from the energy company to an extent that he bought another one and hasn't paid for electricity for a few years. That could've changed but I remember my dad talking to him about it.

Ever since all those years in Iraq and Afghanistan, with every male wearing a beard, I have looked on them (beards) dimly. Gut reaction, you know. You see one and get that certain feeling. Seeing them all over America has gotten me more used to the idea.
Every good muslim must have a beard, and all that nonsense.
And, if it makes you feel uncomfortable, don't post up a pic. It's just that all of us here admire you and want to share in the happiness. I think you will do well with a wife, it's been a long time coming.

I do shave on occasion, usually when I have to do FIT testing for the HazMat/Confined Space training or I just get tired of it. It's a luck of the draw if there's a photo of me sans beard.

Well I'll see what I can do. I generally don't post many photos online, but if I can find one I'll text you, however I have even fewer photos without the beard since my fiance likes it when I have my beard.

Yeah! What!

No you didn't miss any posts. I didn't leak the information until 2 posts ago. My girlfriend (well fiance now) and I were talking about getting married, and one day after a birthday party we just started talking about what we wanted and turns out we planned the wedding. We did everything all backwards, it was planned, and dates set before I even bought the rings. It's a small family only ceremony followed by a family dinner, the next day we have a friends/family open house reception at our place to let people come celebrate.

For me, no question at the present time. .300 followed by the 7mm.

At this point that is where I'm at in my decision making process. 300WM followed by 7mmMag. One of my friends who's going was/is in the same boat but he's thinking 7mm Mag.

My GAP 300 win mag is 1/2 MOA so if there are inherent problems it minuscule compared to the nut behind the bolt.

Well I'd love a GAP 300WM but I can't drop that right now. I'm working on debt and paying for wedding stuff so I'm all spoken for literally.

Firearms / Re: M77 Hawkeye Long Range in 6.5PRC

So, the big bullet in the 6.5 PRC isn't seated as deeply in the case? It does "stick out" quite a bit and that gun has every bit as much "Boom" from the muzzle as my .300WM. So now I think I am beginning to understand why there was a perceived need for these new PRC cartridges.
But, man, the cost of shooting that thing. In a familiar comparison, it is out pacing the cost of diesel. Not a plinker, that rifle!

Short answer of what I'm able to understand is yes. Longer bullet, less need to be seated as deep, maximizes the volume of the case, giving the shooter more velocity, range and ultimately harder impact down range. But again I'm still in the planning phase of an out west Elk/Mule deer hunt so I'm researching calibers to use. I know the standard answer will generally be 7mmMag or 300WM.

However, I'm seeing a lot of companies bullet manufacturers  and weapons makers starting to shift towards the newer cartridges, due to modern technologies correcting some of the short comings (probably not the word I'm looking for) of the more common bullet loadings. One of the issues that has been or is in the process of being addressed is the case design of the belted magnums. So I guess we'll see how everything shakes out, maybe I will invest in a 300PRC and give it a fair shake or I may say I'm sticking with 7mmMag or 300WM and call it even.

82
I understand. And I was a Tanker. Not as tough, we had a tank to "Sleep" in but the maintenance of that thing...
And I ran with the Rangers, Seals, green berets and others for many years, so I have seen all that.
But
During no time in my experience was I ever the dad, watching my son go through all that
and
I trust the NCO's out there, so I know in the end he will be fine.

I didn't mean what I said to sound as if it was minimizing the Father caring for his son aspect. I have learned that a lot of what I say gets misconstrued by people at work, generally due to how I speak. I meant it as he'll be fine going through all this fun stuff.

That is cool
Now there is some discussion about the steep shoulder of the case introduces some instability to the expanding gases pushing on the bullet. Not sure about all of that because these guns are known to be fairly accurate in the right hands.
Doesn't Kenneth shoot one at 1000 yards down on the border?

Part of the reason of the 300PRC was developed for long range. I believe the Navy was or maybe is interested in it for a Sniper's rifle but I can't remember. But the 300PRC "fixes" some of the older tech of the 300WM. No longer has a belt on it so there's no headspacing of the belt, able to use the newer longer bullets that aren't required to be seated as deep, which allows for more powder, so the heavier bullet, with a better BC flies a lot further, faster and hits harder. This is all subjective to me at this point as I don't have either so I analyze and study when I start getting an idea.

He has been in the field or on a range more days in the past year than he has been in a barracks. He sleeps in a bedroll on the ground. If it's raining, he is wet. If it is snowing and raining, he is cold and wet, for days at a time. He is as skinny as a freaking rail.
I guess I must have forgotten just how tough it was, but man, could we give the kid a freakin' break already!

He's living the life of the infantryman. You adapt to it or let it beat you up. He'll be fine.

I have an out west hunt that's being planned for next year so I'm going to have to get something for out there. I've got two calibers in mind 7mmMag and 300WM but have been reading that the 6.5PRC is good for Elk/Mule deer so I'm just basically reading alot.

At the price of ammo for that dog, I stopped shooting it. W A Y too expensive to shoot often. It's one bad gun though. Much better than me.

That's mostly why I haven't invested in one. Might stick with 6.5, or 300WM if I buy something.

I've been thinking of getting one or a 300PRC.. but that would mean I'd have to start reloading or get lucky and find a bunch in stock.

I made the switch awhile ago Nate. However, I also don't shave my beard off very often, but I do shave under my jaw and neck to keep it clean. It takes a little practice to get used to the technique so you don't end up cutting yourself constantly.

So I was trying to stalk up on some pigs the other night and just couldn’t get a good picture through the PVS 14.  Hadn’t noticed that the standard mount was out of alignment with the compM4 but in complete darkness it really obscured the field of view.

So I ordered American Defense QD PVS mount and the SOCOM height CompM4 mount so at least I know that they’ll both be at the same height since both mounts are made by the same company.  Will post up pics when I get it next week.

I love my Garmin Fenix 5x Plus. But I have other watches I rotate out on wearing, for Christmas the girlfriend and her son bought me a watch box to keep them in along with my memorial bracelets. Looks nice, I used to just have them sitting out on top of a bookcase out of the way, but still where I can see the bracelets and reach the watches when I wanted to swap them out.
