Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Guard pulling duty thru blizzard
« on: January 23, 2016, 05:14:31 PM »
The one trip I made to DC when I was 14 this was one if not my favorite part. Watching the changing of the guard. If you never get the chance to watch this in person take a few minutes & look it up on you tube. I don't think you'll be disappointed....

D.O.T. / 10 Jokes for Engineers (or a Pilut)
« on: January 12, 2016, 01:05:23 PM »
Who said engineers have no sense of humor?

1. Normal people believe that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain't broke, it doesn't have enough features yet.

2. To the optimist, the glass is half-full. To the pessimist, the glass is half-empty. To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

3. A priest, a doctor, and an engineer were waiting one morning for a particularly slow group of golfers. The engineer fumed, "What's with those guys? We must have been waiting for fifteen minutes!"
The doctor chimed in, "I don't know, but I've never seen such inept golf!"
The priest said, "Here comes the green-keeper. Let's have a word with him."
He said, "Hello George, what's wrong with that group ahead of us? They're rather slow, aren't they?"
The green-keeper replied, "Oh, yes. That's a group of blind firemen. They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a fire last year, so we always let them play for free anytime."
The group fell silent for a moment.
The priest said, "That's so sad. I think I will say a special prayer for them tonight."
The doctor said, "Good idea. I'm going to contact my ophthalmologist colleague and see if there's anything he can do for them."
The engineer said, "Why can't they play at night?"

4. What is the difference between mechanical engineers and civil engineers?
Mechanical engineers build weapons. Civil engineers build targets.

5. The graduate with a science degree asks, "Why does it work?"
The graduate with an engineering degree asks, "How does it work?"
The graduate with an accounting degree asks, "How much will it cost?"
The graduate with an arts degree asks, "Do you want fries with that?"

6. Three engineering students were gathered together discussing who must have designed the human body.
One said, "It was a mechanical engineer. Just look at all the joints."
Another said, "No, it was an electrical engineer. The nervous system has many thousands of electrical connections."
The last one said, "No, actually it had to have been a civil engineer. Who else would run a toxic waste pipeline through a recreational area?"

7. Knock knock. Who's there? Interrupting coefficient of friction. Interrupting coefficient of fri.... mmmuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu (μ)

8. Two engineering students were walking across a university campus when one said, "Where did you get such a great bike?"
The second engineer replied, "Well, I was walking along yesterday, minding my own business, when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike, threw it to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, "Take what you want."
The first engineer nodded approvingly and said, "Good choice; the clothes probably wouldn't have fit you anyway."

9. An engineer was crossing a road one day, when a frog called out to him and said, "If you kiss me, I'll turn into a beautiful princess." He bent over, picked up the frog and put it in his pocket.
The frog then cried out, "If you kiss me and turn me back into a princess, I'll stay with you for one week and do ANYTHING you want."
Again, the engineer took the frog out, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket.
Finally, the frog asked, "What is the matter? I've told you I'm a beautiful princess and that I'll stay with you for one week and do anything you want. Why won't you kiss me?"
The engineer said, "Look, I'm an engineer. I don't have time for a girlfriend, but a talking frog, now that's cool."

10. A wife asks her husband, a software engineer...
"Could you please go shopping for me and buy one carton of milk, and if they have eggs, get 6!" A short time later the husband comes back with 6 cartons of milk. The wife asks him, "Why the hell did you buy 6 cartons of milk?" He replied, "They had eggs."

Biolite base camp stove, I have the smaller hiking unit. But was at REI in Boulder & noticed these are on sale company wide for $179 until stock is depleted. Looked hard at it but didn't pull trigger. Normally these are $300

Ashley's daughter Lex was at a campfire this evening. Apparently they were sitting around it & a firework exploded. Don't know a whole lot right now other than that she is currently in ER & has burns to left eye & it is bleeding. They are concerned she may lose vision in this eye. If all of you could lift her & her family up it would greatly be appreciated.

Soldier Up / New Goals
« on: December 27, 2015, 10:37:13 PM »
So since moving to CO in June I was running 3-5 miles approx. 3x per week. First month or two the altitude change really dragged on me. We currently live at 5300' here in Northern CO. On black Friday we purchased an annual discounted gym membership for the family in the huge complex called the Erie Rec Center. Since then I have been hitting the gym 3-4x per week on average sometimes more. I have revisited my long lost love of Precor ellipticals and the model I'm currently beating myself up on is a 100i. This machine is very low impact and right now I'm at 45 min around 680 calories burned and 3.5 miles at a level 9 on the resistance scale for the machine. At this pace I'm drenched by the time 45 mins is up. Approximately once a week I up the resistance level. My goal is to work up to a level 12 resistance and then increase my miles to 5 miles in 45 minutes. This was my mid 20's cardio workout and I could run forever it seemed. Currently I am not winded at this pace, once I get to the level 12 and start cutting my times we'll see if that's still the case. I figure 40 is creeping up and I'm going to go down fighting. I'm also doing some very light lifting (more of a cardio workout) and biking on occasion. Then end goal is to lose weight, gain a lot of endurance and try my hand at hiking some 14'ers this spring and summer. I have noticed that the family is following my lead especially the wife unit. Not doing anything real special for diet other than staying away from soda, sugar and limiting bread intake.

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Kitchen duty
« on: December 25, 2015, 12:15:31 PM »
So I bought the youngest a nice little kershaw pocket knife. Nothing fancy just a small sharp knife. The wife decides to use it to open packages & somehow cut her finger pretty good. So I've been demoted to kitchen duty cutting up all sorts of fixins this morning. Never a dull moment with this many females in one place! ::)

D.O.T. / Best Pranks
« on: December 07, 2015, 09:08:01 PM »
So I know this will come as a huge surprise but I live to give people a hard time. Imo it makes life worth living. Along with this I have been known to run my share of pranks. I have very few close friends & one of which has been with me since high school which was 20 years ago.

The first year after high school I landed him a construction job with me doing federal jobs building water treatment facilities (sewage & drinking). Anyhow he lived in an apartment complex at the time & always left his truck unlocked. Regular cab ranger w/ normally trash covering passenger side floor boards. This truck was beat to death. So one evening around dusk I shoot a ground hog in the head from under my cousins wood shop. Nice clean shot to back of the head with .22lr so not really much damage.

So it's around eleven and I have this dead critter in the back of my truck. Decide to drop by his place under cover of darkness & with a small block of wood I prop the wood chucks head up next to his shifter sitting in all that trash on passengers side floor board.

So next morning at 0500 my buddy (who is not a morning person) strolls out to his truck to find the woodchuck there with a smile to greet him. Guess he didn't get truck started before he falls out the drivers side door tripping over his own two feet. So he runs over to our own local Darrel Dixon type from walking dead named Tim Smith & wakes him telling him there is a live woodchuck in his truck. So Tim goes out to rassle this critter & sees its dead.

Let me tell you it was really hard keeping a straight face that day at work. Buddy is going on & on trying to figure out which sob did this to him.

Fast forward twenty years, he turned 40 few days ago. I figured twenty years was sufficient & time to come clean for my past transgressions. So I sent him a b-day card asking him to apologize to Tim Smith the next time he runs into him for waking him up that morning so long ago.

Buddy text me a bit ago

"Thanks for the card

You Sh*thead"

Firearms / Suppressor Build
« on: December 04, 2015, 05:47:15 PM »
First this is going to take awhile so relax. I just ordered the finger print cards from the ATF. Once I receive those then I need to get local police chiefs signature (we'll see if this happens, if not may be looking at a trust) and fill out a few more forms which I will detail later. Then send funds along with paperwork off to ATF and wait a good 120 days. No part of this build will start before I receive approval from ATF.

My goal is to build a unit capable of suppressing an AR but will also be using it on .22 LR and .22 Mag guns. I will be doing research on designs and updating here as I progress forward.

So long story short I had a nice Eaton compressor that had a million man hours on it. When I sold business and had auctions I sold the compressor rather than relocate it to CO. You have to draw the line somewhere and my best equipment was kept and the well used stuff & I parted ways. So fast forward several months and I'm now tired of not having an air compressor. I found a like new 60 gallon tank on CL local with a 200psi rating for a song and a dance. So once acquiring a new shop I called up Eaton. Couple weeks later these components showed up on the back of a semi on a small skid.

Any experience with one of these? JK is limited on spots to mount a standard holster for left hand draw. Thinking one of these may help me get it where I need it to be.

Canning & Food Storage / Cheapo Long Term Dry Good Storage
« on: November 16, 2015, 11:51:37 AM »
Added this info to another thread about burying items but thought I would add it here as well.

I bought these lids years ago for bulk food storage. I would get used food grade 2.5 gal buckets at dunkin donuts for couple bucks (buckets are perfect height for long pasta, think spaghetti) add mylar bag and oxygen absorbers and your GTG. One note, I always filled buckets and left them in freezer for 24hours b4 sealing. This kills any potential bugs.......

6 pack for $40 so less than $7 a unit.
