My guess is that he was probably anticipating recoil and pushing shots to the left. Those factory sights are plastic and most consider them temporary anyway. Playing devils advocate to my own point, I put almost 10k rounds through my first model 17 and it still has the plastics sights in it. I’m a fan of using the slide stop/catch to release the slide.
