Title: Life straw
Post by: Farmer Jon on January 19, 2017, 07:49:07 AM
I've wanted one just to have around but they are pricey. My wife got me one for Christmas. Anyone have any experience with them. Are they with the money? Do they work like they say? I've seen a videos but they were all advertisements. It would be a good thing to have on our canoe and camping trips.

I have them and use them. Beats Iodine tabs

I bought 10 for the family when I found them on sale. Haven't used them yet, but based on reviews and studies I've looked at they're supposed to be good.

i keep a bunch of those around just incase. they'd be last ditch, but before iodine tabs, etc.

I am slightly tempted to test them out on the pond water in the back.

ANYTHING beats iodine tabs. I've boiled water in halved orange peels to avoid them during O.A., and didn't regret the extra time it took.

Sawyer mini....same price. But wife and I also have a straw in both our bags. Never used one but wouldn't be afraid to in the places I've needed a filter this far. But again, having used a sawyer mini for several hundred gallons, at 15$ on sale or 20 not on sale, will always recommend that over everything else.

Wife said she paid 15 for the life straw. Where do you do you find the Sawyer mini?

I was wondering how you know when it's used up.

Sawyer mini can be had at lots of places, but I've bought all mine from amazon or Walmart because they have always been the least expensive, and I've got them on sale at Amazon too.

Sawyers come with a syringe you use to backflush the filter and it keeps them fresh. Life straw, no idea how long their good for, few hundred gallons depending on condition of water filtered Id say. Their website says it's good for 1000 liters, and I believe 3.78 liters is a gallon, so 264.55 gallons.
