That or a walnut or soda media.
Sand is fine for that. Will remove some material. Walnut is OK too, just more $$$.

So here's an interesting story

Over in Germany in 1982 I was cruising down the Rhine River in an AH-1S Cobra in a flight of three. We heard a call on "Guard" that a Chinook had just crashed on the Autobahn neat Finton Barracks. Knowing where that was, I flared up to gain altitude and immediately saw the inky black smoke plume. We were the first to get there. In the video, I was flying the lead Snake which circled overhead for a moment.

How does that relate?

That Chinook had just had a rebuilt Combining transmission installed. It's the one both engines feed into. That transmission had failed allowing the forward driveshaft to run elliptically which allowed it to touch a part of the airframe. That contact quickly cut through the thin aluminum shaft. The blades dephased allowing all six rotor blades to beat against themselves, so they started to disintegrate. The pilots who were in an emergency descent from 10,000 feet pulled in some power to arrest their rate of descent. The final hammer blow came when thousands of horsepower had nowhere to go but to the aft transmission. The sudden surge of power tore the entire aft pylon off the airframe at about 1,000 feet AGL. They never had any chance at all.

The reason the transmission had failed was a lack of lubrication. The lubricating oil nozzles which constantly spray oil onto the huge rotating mass of gears were mostly clogged...With the residue of Walnut shells!

No reason not to use shells as a blast media, it's just that that event is indelibly burned into my memory. I think the body count was 26.

I was a soldier for a long time.
It's hard to figure out exactly how many combat deployments I was a part of
I've got many memories like that.
Some are a lot more vivid than that one.

On that crash, I later learned that hook was doing weekend parachute club "elevators" Providing rides up to the jump altitude over and over all day. Boring job, but good for the youghins to build flight time...lots of take-off and landing and cruise checks and fuel checks and the rest.

When that thing started to come apart there were still a bunch of jumpers on board
who,
jumped out on the way down,
and
went up through the rotor system.
None survived.
One of the most horrific crashes you can imagine.

I have been part of 2 crash/recovery mission. I don't want to do that again, still have dreams about. Worst part was meeting the families of the crews. There is a reason they take foot prints of flyers

Back in the cattle business. 90 head of Jersey Wagyu cross straight from sunny southern California. Welcome to Nebraska. We're expecting negative temps the next few days. I hope they acclimate quickly.

The nose of the B52 needs to point into the wind.
You can't roll into the wind with 800 feet long wings
So
The fuselage points into the wind and the landing gear aligns with the runway
But only on B52's and I think, C5s

It's called crabbing

I once put a Canadair regional jet down with a 50 knot crosswind landing at Kennedy International. Under carriage was fixed, and I wiped out almost all of the tires.

Didnt know the C5 did it too, but makes sense with the narrow under carriage.

By the way, I think that was a "secret" for many years on the 52, wright? Oh and its all 4 sets of gear on the 52 that pivot for those not knowing.

Ever read the "flight of the old dog"? Cool book.

I have read all but 1 maybe 2 of the books in that series.  Good series, and some crazy, cool descriptions to help the imagination.

I am not for sure on the C5 gear. I know it pivots 90 degrees while stowing, but I am not sure about it pivoting for T/O and landings. BTW, Fred, the C5 is also called "Fred"

Well, wifes 2013 Captiva trans went bad on Sat. Works fine just has a whine. Had way too much fluid in it, changed it but no good.

Not going to repair, only worth about 4k if it ran good. She is rough on vehicles.

She is looking at honda hybrid, why I don't know. Advice goes into thin air. Driving my Tahoe, poor thing.

Made it to the city last night.
Was a chilly -37 when we left home.
My air bags leak badly at this temp.
I must sort that out in better weather.

It’s apparently been real cold a while.
This morning at -22 it was quite nice…

The 90+ we’re heading toward on Saturday sure looks nice.
I just don't want to wind up missing a digit or limb.  I can sometimes get in a hurry to get results.

So popular in fact a week ago two tweekers used one to break into a shop several buddies and I had for mutual storage in Colorado. They managed to steel 5k of salvage copper wire a week ago (not mine) and various tools some of which were mine I had lent out. Said owner of copper got them on video at unit and scrap yard.

For some reason Tapatalk is not working at all for the site and its been that way for me for a few weeks so its hard for me to find time to log on from another device.

Yesterday I tackled upper a arms on the Bus.  Had an upper ball joint really bad causing it to walk all over the road on crowns.  Our own Tate from Randy’s Ring and Pinion hooked me up with the ICON HD Upper A Arms.  I decided since i was tearing it down I would replace the lower ball joints too. They were fine and really didnt need it but it was interesting to see the wear of 50,000 miles on them. So new lowers and the new uppers.  When I rebuilt the Bus a while back everything was new and I cheaped out on the uppers, using ac/Delco OEM.  I put urethane bushings in the lower and moog joints, and I wish I had spent the money on better uppers, but at least now i have poly bushings in the uppers and some really nice pieces in those ICONs.

I marked the alignment plates with a welding marker and put them back in the same spot. Still needs aligning but came out pretty close.

I did some chit today, but Tapatalk isn’t working so you know the rule. Pics or it didn’t happen so it must not have happened. I’m pretty sure Tapatalk is a Dave’s fault. Definitely not Nate’s IYKYK….. It could be H too though, in that case it’s Ken’s fault. Man it would have been so much easier to post some pics then write this nonsense. Maybe I’ll TEXT Nate and get his opinion on the matter….

LOL. do you have doubler kits? I have a 205 and picking up a 203 for $50 sat (hopefully)

I see most kits are around $1000, but starworks and I like the idea of all steel.

I do not and last few I have use the Northwest Fabworks eco box or titan box. It’s basically a 241/205 doubler. A lot less weight and more compact unit. I’d suggest looking at the eco box and sell the 203 to someone who thinks it’s worth money.

I hope tap talk gets fixed soon this logging in on my phone is kind of sucking. Had a lot going on this week. The skis on the old skidoo wore plum out so rebuilding them while we're a little slow in the shop. Can't find OEM and aftermarkets are going to cost around $500. We figure the whole machine's not worth $500 so we're just going to fix them. Welding some 3/16 plate in the bottom with rebar for wear rods.
The new shed is all done We are waiting for the electricians to come and get it wired up so I can start on Grandpa's 54 Chevy.

I continue to work on this Tap Talk problem.

I am talking in the background to a man you all may come to know, Jeremy. He designs websites and is pretty good with that stuff. I spoke to him several times now.

I have a master plan afoot that will ultimately have him hosting and actually moderating in the background as the first paid employee of the forum. I plan to get the funds to pay for all this through advertising. So far I have Randy's worldwide interest along with a host of other companies. My concept here is to try and grab 15-20 companies like shooters suppliers, 4WD parts people, someone like Treger, and the like to have advertising. I even contacted a helicopter firefighting company that my buddy used to run to see if they would like to advertise.

I suspect this is a process that will last months, and probably create some turbulence. But the current web hosting company is not cutting it at all, and they are not getting better.

I'll have to migrate the whole forum over to a new host. That's about the same as lifting up your house and barn and moving it across the state. It is possible, but it will be difficult and take a lot of work.

Men, my goal is to continue to provide a clean place for all of you to fellowship. It will #1 remain a godly place, and even move more in that direction. As the USA and the world move in an opposite direction, I plan to stand fast on the rock who built me. I hope that you all stand fast with me and bring hundreds of friends. Beyond that, I do not know what God will allow me to do here, but if he wants it, he can create it. I will answer that call, and I suspect all/most of you will help me.

Thx Shawn, those are nice options but bust the bank. Heck just paid $50 for the 203 and he a had a GM205 I got for another $300. Left both at the Ridge for now.

Was a nice drive almost going to Susanville (north of Reno). Tied em down at this cool little closed gas station, still had $1.39 on the pumps!

JR, no problem. My experience is unless you are building the adapter kit yourself or someone’s giving it to you the eco box (where you pull the 241 planetary & install it into the case) it’s about a wash with a much lighter and better setup. Here again I haven’t bought an eco box for the last year or so either but everything is getting more expensive. That 203/205 is just a heavy ******* pig……

Enough……

My guess is with the small frame 2200# lifting capacity that it would tip before it bends or breaks I’d think.

Yes they will.
It is a very eerie feeling when you realize the pack has surrounded you.
They whistle and “talk” as they circle.
A 12ga is you friend.

Day 11 I think in Mexico.
No Chapo problems on this side (that I’m aware of anyway…)
Hot is all…dang hot for me at least. Lol.
See y’all in another 10 or so.
Completely offline is nice.
I just don't want to wind up missing a digit or limb.  I can sometimes get in a hurry to get results.

Had a pretty disappointing day yesterday. First off, I was bidding on a bus that we could use for the scout troop. Nothing huge a 14-passenger van with short bus body. There were 2 of them. I was out bid on both. I went way past my top. In today's world where everything is so expensive people sure do seem to have a lot of money. Auction stuff is sky high. it's a seller's market.

Secondly, we had our first chili feed fund raiser for our high adventure trip. We worked hard all day but less than half of the crowd that we expected. Me made chili for 250. served 75. I don't know where it went wrong. We had ads in the paper and on the radio. It was all over Facebook. On the upside the people that did show paid more than we were asking per meal. So much so that we did turn a tiny profit. We also learned a lot about making a large batch of food and we learned about how to serve it efficiently. Even though I am kind of down in the dumps about it I am confident next year will be better.

Good weekend of scouting this weekend. My wife and I were both recognized at the district dinner. We were awarded the eye of the tiger award. That is a district specific award. My wife is the committee chair for the boy Scout troop and to cub pack.
Yesterday I taught class all afternoon. Introduction to leadership skills troop. It was supposed to take 6 hours with breaks but with a very small group we got it done in about 4. Had a pizza party after.
