Cheapo air compressor (free)
« on: November 30, 2020, 10:47:54 AM »
A friend of mine called asking if I needed something to tinker with while out of work.

He says the compressor motor runs, says it only builds so much air and that amount of air won’t run any tools of fill up any tube/tire of any sort.

Via previous conversation I need to replace this part.

Subsequently I also need to replace the little brass fitting that goes into the side to pressurize the switch also.    Oops I broke the tab off .

Suggestions on where to look for said parts?

Lowe’s/home despot was always a go to for brass fittings. Also, if that is the overpressure relief valve, I think Lowe’s carries those in their air compressor section.

Ok I have sourced a new valve, I have installed it and ran for forty min.  No more pressure on the tank over 60psi.

Next suggestion?

Bad motor?

I doubt its the motor.  Probably in the compressor head.  Either rings on the piston or the reed valves in the head.

Are these things worth looking at do ya think?  I’m in the comp about $45 bucks with brass fittings now.

Pop the head off to look at the valves. Could be gunked up and not sealing well.
I just don't want to wind up missing a digit or limb.  I can sometimes get in a hurry to get results.

Found a rebuild kit for $125 new position, looks like a new sleeve for the unit

What do the masses say?  With it for a oil less Colman ?

The bother next will be the tank, I tapped on it here and there and it doesn’t sound hollow but ya never really know

Rebuild the head then the tank pops. My thoughts anyway

Give it a shot?!

Whats the worst that can happen?  You got a free a.c., it needs some work, you either fix it or dont, but at least you get the knowledge from doing it?

Buy a new compressor head from Eaton compressors and never buy another. I would bet that tank is fine and will last a long time.

Gosh dang I don’t think they have a motor small enough for this little motor to turn.

I can see if I can source a new motor too.  Hadn’t thought of that

What motor do you have? Tractor supply or the last one I bought off Amazon I believe .

Retract that, the last one I bought was a monster rebuilt by that guy in Iowa. The smaller ones were from tractor supply or Amazon (couple hp units)

Same website I found,    With parts for that piston.    Cryin shame they didn’t make that rubber gasket removable. Go from 125 to 10 real fast lol

I’m still debating.   Today I see if I can get the drain valve off and see what falls out of that tank
