I have been a little busy lately so have had almost zero time to post here.

I had heard rumblings about how fast this was happening but as you can see its moving.

I am NOT a big fan of this news group but the put out some good content every once and a while.

Build Threads / trucks that spent time in the salt
« on: July 21, 2020, 12:13:33 AM »
The factory running boards on the 03 2500 that were mostly plastic finally gave up the ghost.

So I had a set that a friend of mine gave to me a long time ago, with this set you have to mount the support brackets using the bolts going thru the body mounts.

Then I removed them I was surprised to see this, not much left. of the 6 bolts holding the cab these were the worst.

This truck from what the original owner told me spent 1 year in Minnesota and the truck dose not have any rust for the most part, just mostly surface.

Its amazing what a small amount of salt/water trapped in a closed area will do to metal. the bolt thats almost gone was the center passenger mount

In a few more years the metal 3D printing should come down to the point where almost anything can be produced at home.

So if there is a plus side to this on the travel side I had to fly commercial I have never seen the airports so empty Zero wait I mean nothing at TSA and planes with 10 people.

Last few weeks I have been spoiled and I really miss the Gulfstream life.

Why dose it seem that realtors have an IQ of about 50 for the most part.  I have been looking for Farms in Tennessee and I have talked to more dense people than I can shake a stick at.

I don't get it and seems to be nationwide.

Now given I am not your typical buyer but LISTEN to what I am asking for.

Tires, Wheels, and Suspension / Duratrac update
« on: July 22, 2019, 02:54:53 PM »
I bought 4ea new 285/70/17 Duratrac's load range E, build date late 2015 for my RamCharger I managed to put about 25K on the RC before it got rolled, I never had a problem never got a flat ran them around 45-50psi and the RC weights in a little over 7K lbs tires were about 40-50% remaining.

I then transferred these tires over to my 03 Ram 2500 and have added an additional 10K miles but I had noticed the tread was starting to chunk pretty bad and getting noisy on the freeway, I'm assuming this is mostly from the weak limited slip which lets lots more spinning in the rear as the rear tires are chuncking way worse than the fronts.  Tires are currently around 30%tread life am I was already looking for replacements.

So this past weekend we were going to Paraglide from a new area and to get there you have to take a very extreme trail or road of rocks/boulders.  Six people in the truck loaded with all of our gear.  I have to say these trucks are pretty capable and I only had to back up twice to get a better line.

Any way not sure what exactly caused it but I got a flat on the rear, no big deal I got the spare down and away we went, came back down the trail and didnt see anything wrong and we went to a diffrent site, once we got there now the other rear tire was on it way to going flat, luckily I have an air compressor aired it back up and headed home.

Once home took both tires over to the tire place and he confirmed what I had thought the tires were just getting to the point they were not as plyable anymore, one hole was large about 3/16 of an inch and the other one was pin hole sized, both were patched and both are holding air.

So now im on the hunt for new rubber and I was very happy with the Duratrac's so I might just go back with them.  I post some picture of the tires in their current state.  but can complain with the performance of this tire with what it was put thru over the last 4 yrs.

Classifieds / Complete 92 running Cummins motor
« on: May 29, 2019, 08:33:22 PM »
I have a complete Cummins engine for sale that is coming out of my RC.  Very good engine, good oil pressure, low blowby.  I have no idea how many miles are on the bottom end.  I installed a Cummins reman head about 20K ago HD Fuel pin and I think 5x10 injectors.  You can come and hear it run before I pull it of i can send a Video.  TURBO and MOTOR MOUNTS are NOT INCLUDED but I have an H1 turbo that you can have.  Everything else is included and I will remove the engine from the truck for you.

Asking 2K if I dont get close to this I just might keep it, only reason I'm selling is I built up a new engine so I do not have any plans for this one.  let me know if there is any interest here before I go to craigs list.

Looks very capable but as he says at the end the wight of these rigs is getting up there.  real problem with building a rig like this is the cost and then spending all that money and driving it thru the brush or getting rock rash.

Build Threads / Ramcharger Rebuild
« on: March 31, 2019, 08:19:21 PM »
Ok in the spirit of oil change I have started the rebuild of the Ramcharger.

First order of business was to get the 92 body that I am going to use off the frame that has been sold.   I dont have a lift but I do understand Hydraulics and mechanical jacks and gravity if that all goes wrong.

I disconnected all the electrical, removed the front core support and then unbolted the body mounts using a HYd floor jack and wooden 4x4 blocks.  I raised the body enough to use camper jacks that are used on the pickup style campers, the pucker factor getting the body high enough was pretty high once high enough I inserted a 2x6 under the body to use the camper jacks.  I then also took off the back tires and used a floor jack under the rear differential and just rolled the whole assembly out from under the body.

Once the frame was out of the way I lowered the body down as low as the camper jack would let me and used the Rigid tripod stands to set everything on.  The body is really clean and zero rot, just surface rust

The plan after I get rid of the 92 frame is to do the same treatment to the 90 that got rolled.  Planning a few upgrades I will list them in the next couple days.  at least the project is rolling or sitting how ever you want to look at it and not bad for a half days work.

Build Threads / Power Wagon winch on a standard 2500 Ram
« on: January 14, 2019, 01:35:38 PM »
I’m not a big fan of bumpers that stick out 3ft in front or behind a truck and I really liked the current factory Power Wagon setups how they tuck the it up inside the frame rails.

What I was not a fan of is how much Dodge wants for the parts for that setup, insanely stupid expensive!  My guess is they want you to buy the truck and not the parts for the truck.

Warn builds this for Dodge per Dodge’s requirements/specs, the winch is a M12 that is totally different than the standard M12000, its 180 opposite in how it runs because Dodge needs a top spool feed with the drive motor on the left side of the unit.

I have been watching Craigslist and I bought a Warn M12000, I got an extremely good deal, the real issue is the mounting hardware for the winch list price from Dodge just for that hardware is over $750.  So again one showed up on craigslist for next to nothing and now I have all the hard parts.

So the issue is if you are going to run the standard M12000 winch you have to flip the winch so that it feeds from the top, with these planetary type winches it does not matter about the orientation the only requirement I see from Warn is the mounting feet have to be forward.  When you do this the free spool handle is now on the bottom so all you have to do is reclock the housing and problem solved, now that I have everything test fit I have to get some hardware and make the power cables hopefully it will be finished next week.

The first picture shows the standard M12000 winch flipped in the mount, the second picture show how the mount bolts in the truck and the third picture shows the free spool handle reclocked.

Firearms / 9mm AR
« on: January 01, 2019, 11:43:23 AM »
Not a big fan of 9mm, but I like a not having to buy a bunch of different mags Im going to give these a try and see how they run.   They are made my Meanarms.com  Would love to see a .45 version of this.

So what this insert dose is convert your .223 pmag to 9mm and then you can always convert it back to .223 or .300 or what ever you heart desires. the insert is $29 or 3 for $79

Powerplant, Driveline, and Braking / 2003 Ram 2500 front diff
« on: June 25, 2018, 10:43:37 AM »

So I dropped the front cover of an 03 ram 2500 this truck has an AAM 9.25.  I knew it wasn't going to be good when I heard metal him the pan, I have never seen this happen in all the diffs I have worked on.  The adjusting nut retainer and bolt came loose and the gears chewed it up real good, the gears look ok none of the teeth are chipped but Im sure all the metal didn't do the bearings any favors.

Tate, I need the retainer and bolt and some guidance on best way to proceed here, I don't know if the adjustment nut has moved and I have never messed with one of the AAM units, I know there is a special wrench for adjusting that nut.

I saw this pop up on ebay,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cadillac-Gage-Ranger-Peacekeeper-4x4-Armored-Truck-Rare-Titled-/222400585024?forcerrptr=true&hash=item33c81b9d40:g:MnYAAOSwA3dYir6R&item=222400585024

The SP's had these when I was active duty, working the flight line gets boring at times.  So a couple of the SP's were also Mopar guys, we used to run these down the taxiways at "high Speed" if you want to call it that about 80-90 is all they had, Stopping on the other hand was the real excitement!  Can you say smoke and more smoke and not a lot of stopping.

Which brings me back to poor choices the US military has made over the years, the company that made these I am not sure I could ever look at my self in the mirror.  Basically the chassis is a 3/4 ton Dodge pick up with ZERO upgrades and I mean nothing.

I know a lot of people say, "that's what the military ordered" but whoever wrote that request for build should not do this kind of jobs.  I could rant for hours on this and what I saw overseas once the golden spicket got turned on, I would make some of these contractors ride in what they build so they can learn what a poor design is like!

At long last they are selling a crate motor for repowers, I would assume that if this sells well the 6cylinder and V8 will follow.  I see they didn't mention cost, if I had to guess I would say around 5-7K depending on what bells and whistles you want.

Firearms / So Don Asked, first 1911 build
« on: November 17, 2015, 04:48:44 PM »
Ok Don per your request, some firearm stuff.  This is my first 1911 build, the frame was an 80% and the slide was from Brownells, the internal parts were from Sarco.  This is a series 70, not very challenging took about 45min to do the machining the most involved job was fitting the hammer and sear.  Function check good, now I just need to put some sights on it and put a few hundred rounds thru it.  after that I will take it back apart and do prep for coating.  Not sure what I will use for coating.
