Title: M40 inspired build
Post by: rcampbell on March 10, 2018, 12:37:13 PM
Hey guys, I have to admint, I have a soft spot for older Remginton 700's, especially in wood stocks. So I've decided I'm going to build an M40 inspired rifle. I want it to have all the looks of an M40, but will be shooting it, hence the decision to go 223. This caliber will make is cheaper to shoot, and a little easier on the shoulder since it's going to get the period correct aluminium butt plate.

So far, I have a leupold std base, that looks a lot like the old redfield base they used on the M40.

And I got a numrich stock from a fella that had a few kicking around. Not an "actual" M40 stock, but a pretty good facsimile.

Anyone know where a good place to find parts would be in Canada, or a place that at least ships to Canada? Mostly looking for a period-correct sling, butt plate and scope rings, sling swivels.

Western Gun Parts in Edmonton is worth a try.

I found an action in excellent condition, and of a vintage to make it similar to the M40. It's a pre-1983 Rem 700 action. I wanted to get one that has the older style, smoother bolt handle, and also has the screw holes in the left rear side that would be used to mount rear iron sites. This one doesn't even looks like it's been fired, no wear or brass on the bolt face, and lugs don't show any wear.

Yes I likely will. Just need to get my hands on a rm varmint contour barrel, and then I'll get it trued and bbl installed all at the same time. I also have a 40X trigger that I will put on it as well.

Here's how it's looking so far. I'm going to try and find the aluminium butt plate, and sling swivels and a sling that looks somewhat correct.

Thanks guys, I've always loved the look of these as well.

My biggest conundrum is what to do for a finish on the barrel. The action and bottom metal are blued. From what I understand the M40's weren't a shiny finish like a blued finish, but more matte, like a parkerized finish or something.

I don't want to paint the action. Do you all think it would look semi-legit if I got the barrel blued to match?

I think a good dark blue by a pro would be fine. What other options are there besides "paint"?
I do have a 7mm mouser style custom that has a super dark blueing (looks black) and I was always curious how it was done
