So one thing about hippy land is they like their liquor. Or maybe it's just the population density that can support these large establishments. However, with having all these breweries in this state I think its the former......
Anyhow so today the wife unit and I made our annual pre Christmas stop at one of these large discount retailers. As my wife picked out several cheap bottles of wine for family functions I strolled over to my favorite isle which is that of bourbon and whiskey. I took several minutes to scan the locked glass cases of very expensive 15+ year old brew. It was just shortly after that I stumbled across this and the name caught my eye......
which made me pick up a bottle and then read the back label and yes one of their products is in fact named Napalm
So I didn't end up buying (I'm a sucker for my old regular Breckenridge manufacturer and they had a second run of a batch I have not tried yet) but wondered if any of you fellows have tried this brand? I will say that normally anything less than $50 a bottle usually isn't worth it in my experience.......

I think all that hippie-land green smoke has gone to your head Shawn... there shouldn't be an apostrophe in connoisseurs  :knucklehead:

I didn’t spell check, so the answer is no you have not had any. Keep that up & we’ll lump you in with the likes of Ken!
Edit: I fixed the title for you......
-
I dunno... im thinking Ken might be wanting a friend, you guys are all so rough on him LOL

Hey Shawn,
If you evaluate that brew for us, should you use the weapons assessment format we developed? :likebutton:

so that whisky is something that all of these guys had their name put on. matt best and Vincent vargas were both in el paso the same time I was, and I have talked to vargas a couple times. both of them are former us army rangers.

Good intel Nate, anyone actually put any of this product down your gullet?
-
lost me at cinnamon.....
i find that a lot of "boutique" whiskey is rebottled whiskey made by someone else. Good on them for finding a marketing plan to play on their patriotism.
As for good whiskey, take a look at the Orphan Barrel series.
-
Charles, I have enough expensive bad habits.......
This one needs to remain in check for now!

Anyone had Fireball....

I recall a fifth of aftershock when I was er not old enough to be drinking that stuff. I was sick for 3 days (probably alcohol poisoning honestly). Never had it since.....

Good whisky is good. Bad whisky is.. .just that. I prefer bourbons but appreciate some of the single malts. If you get a chance to go to a Johnny Walker tasting night go for it. It's fun.
I went in Boston and first they give you a nice (decent, not amazing) steak dinner. Then they put a placemat in front of you with a map of Scotland with small circles on the outside and arrows to the locations of all the distilleries that Johnny Walker uses. On each of these circles went a small shot of the single malt made by that distiller. At the top were shots of Johnny Walker black and one of blue.
They had a master distiller of theirs (iirc he was 1 of only 3 or 4 people that they have in that role) in a kilt who gave a slide show. They had a small oven burning peat in the corner the whole night for ambience. The slide show had pictures of all the single malt distillers locations, building etc. He would provide descriptions of all the single malts- the flavor, aroma, peat intensity etc. And you would taste them. Then having gone through all of them you tried the blended versions from Johnny Walker. It was amazing how each of the single malts vary so much and vary from year to year but JW takes all those and blends them to have a single flavor. And the master distillers do it only by smell.
Makes for a fun night.

I’m a bourbon guy but do enjoy a single malt occasionally. It’s a shame my team at work thinks I’m a scotch guy. I have a barely tapped bottle of Blue, a bottle and a 1/2 of macallen 18 and a new bottle of 18 macallen oak cask.

Well Charles, feel free to package up that bottle of Blue and send it my way, and I'll swap you a few bottles of Maker's 46, or a Barrel Strength.....buddy who just passed gave me my only taste of "Blue" when his dog finished his Dual Champion title......now that was gOOd stuff!
-
x2 I'll take any of those single malts off your hands!
Leadslingers appears to be a small batch distillery in OK. I'd say they're the real deal and would be willing to give it a taste test if I could find it up here.

I have some pretty great customers.
Yeah I'm a simpleton... I'll take some good ole Jack any day. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171219/d10acbfc1a52e60b15d3b9ed201c9cd5.jpg)

Ok. I think this will fit nicely here. I ordered a silicone 2 inch ice cube tray. (BPA free, of course ).

I used to have some 1" square plastic of some sort ice cube that were filled with water. You could freeze them and then put them in a drink so it wouldn't water it down. Gradually lost them over time but they were great for whiskeys.
-
Wilbur, if you were an alcoholic...urr, I mean connoisseur like Charles, you would know how much whiskey to add to up the percentage of booze/water. ;P
Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk
-
Seasoned connoisseur , Ken.
They also make soapstone cubes you keep frozen to chill good scotch. I was told many years ago that anything 18 or older , you never put ice in. Ken is right. If you have one big cube then there is a drinking pace that allows for the perfect amount of water to be introduced. Too slow and it gets watery. Too fast and welll....

-
I have very little experience here but a good friend of mine uses these heavy steel squares, much like the soapstone cubes I assume. They work well in a good ol coke n crown

Let me know as I’ve been thinking of dropping the extra $ to try it out - I know I’ll like it; how much is the real question!
-
I don't think its worth it personally. I much prefer the barrel strength jack single barrel. It very much like makers just a wee bit hotter.
-
That particular 46 is kind of a Frankenstein type development. I’ve not been there to experience it firsthand yet, but I understand you can experiment with multiple different combinations of chard staves to put into the barrel for the secondary aging process. Makers has built and developed a new hillside cold aging cave specifically for this rollout. I’ve not tried any yet firsthand, and look forward to it! There are several different ones out in a big name beverage depot near me-I guess I’ll have to pick one & see what I think. My point is that you may not like one yet you may love another.
Again, feel free to send that swill to me and I’ll give it a proper burial !
-
Ok. So I started to try to understand why I like what I like.
The story behind whiskey is a grain or grains mashed and fermented.
Each distiller has a “mash bill” that describes the percentage of corn, rye and barley used in the production.
I’ve determined that I like a high corn bill. 87% corn is good. Rye less than 10-12 % is ideal for me
So try it next time you are drinking your favorite. Look up the mash bill and you’ll start to be able to pick stuff to try that fits your profile n

Interesting, never considered it but makes sense. You know the great thing about a low carb diet is you can still drink whiskey and bourbons.... :likebutton:
-
Heres a pdf version of everybodys mash bill as of 2015
-
Awesome!! Thanks Nate! I’ve been searching for something like that.

That's awesome. I found the Maker's and Diageo numbers interesting.
Never heard of the Diageo blends tbh... how about you guys?
Holy cow.. just googled Rhetoric Whiskey. .. out of my league.
-
Ken, was that a rhetorical statement?
Per Charles comments on mash bills - I know that I don't like Rye.....Makers uses Red Wheat instead, which tends to push their mash more towards bread dough.....I like bread, but not rye bread.
4 Roses has a bunch of variables, yeast strains etc. kinda like a Chemists like for the periodic table of elements.....I haven't found any of theirs that I care for much.
-
Wheat is a softer taste and probably why I’m not as fond of Maker’s.

I looked that one up Charles, sounds tasty with cinnamon and vanilla....

A hair too much rye for me (16%) but still pretty good.

You are correct trn, it has also lost the 15 year age claim with in the last year or 2 because of the shortage/demand for bourbon.
I can guarantee that this is definitely the smoothest bourbon i have ever sipped. But then again, i am also on my 4th or 5th double.
-
I can state that after roughly 10/12 double shots with 1-2 ice cubes per drink....i feel am doing just fine.... :beercheers:
