Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Father's Day
« on: May 27, 2015, 11:19:22 PM »
In honor of our earthly fathers, I'd like to start a thread.  Lets hear about some great role models we had and seek to emulate.

My father. Modestly educated, 40 year union iron worker. Climbed steel and connected beam on some 40 and 50 story buildings back in the day when OSHA didn't pay a lot of attention.  Left the house every morning at 5:30 and got home at 4.  Worked in the blazing Houston heat and still, without fail, coached my baseball team and practiced with me every day.  We had 6 in the family so money was always tight, but I remember that he always saved his change and we rolled coins to get the best baseball equipment money could buy.

He was a tough man with little tolerance and a hard disciplinarian.  Before the Lord saved him in 1975 he was a full on hell raiser.  Had run ins with the law before I was born.  I saw what the Lord did in his life and never appreciated it until 2003 when I had my own conversion experience.  He was a golden gloves boxer, served in the 1st Cav in Korea, and he has lived a life of great example of a servant of the Lord since his conversion.

The one thing that stands out above all is that I know with all my heart he has never lied to me in my life.  When he said "don't cross that line or else" he absolutely meant it.  When I got bigger and stronger than him, he said " if you get to the point where I can't whip you, I'll shoot you"...and he meant it.  When I strayed into trouble as a teen he prayed that the Lord would take me out of the world rather than his wife (my mother) be burdened with the emotional baggage of a son gone off the rails.  His love is unconditional and true.

He is my biggest fan and supporter and continues to amaze me in his older years.  He loves my wife and kids as much as I do and never lets grass grow under his feet.  Every whooping I ever received was needed, deserved and delivered with love. And it has helped make me the man I am today.  He also a fervent student of scriptures and one of the best biblical scholars I know, routinely parsing the Greek manuscripts to ascertain the truth of the word.

I am grateful to the Lord for such a role model.

My girls and I made a bird feeder for my dad for Father's Day. Glued up some cedar and then made it into a rather large feeder. Plexiglass windows.  It probably holds about a gallon of seed. My dad spends about half his retirement on bird feed.  He should like this.

Firearms / Gun Quotes (or more accurately, weapon quotes)

Thought this would be a good thread to see what comes out of the woodwork.  A good link.

A good quote

Every citizen should be a soldier.
This was the case with the Greeks and Romans,
and must be that of every free state.

Oh my.  Look at the list of weapons this company has going up for auction from a private estate....from a divorce settlement.  If my wife took my guns I would tell her she only needs to leave me one....and I'd give her about a 1 minute head start...

Build Threads / Jeep Advice Needed
« on: May 06, 2015, 09:37:15 AM »
I know some of you out there own or have owned Jeeps.  I'm considering a Jeep for a project (think mini Square D)

I want a no electronics, diesel powered, go anywhere, compact, vehicle.  I'm thinking CJ-7 or CJ8 (although the CJ8s command a lot of money) and swapping in a small Izuzu small diesel or a 4 banger mercedes diesel with mechanical injection. (would a 12V cummins fit?  Although I like the idea of an even more fuel efficient 4 banger)

I'd want it to be street legal so emissions would have to come into play, I guess.

I don't know the first thing about what to look for, weak spots, body problems, better years, axle options, etc.

I'd like something decent, but not great since I'll be parting out the engine and swapping in a diesel.

So, a potential build project with no extra gizmos.  A key, a diesel engine, manual trans, manual locking hubs, wipers and headlights.

What advice can you give a Jeep neophyte?

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / EMP
« on: May 06, 2015, 08:52:54 AM »
As I sit here on my 3rd cup of quoffee (as Big D would say), I run across this

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3068216/Pentagon-spend-2billion-shield-War-Games-mountain-bunker-EMP-attack-North-Korea-Iran.html

and it reaffirms that there is a picture developing in this country.

Not unlike watching an impressionist painter, who places small dots of paint on the canvas. Seemingly randomly at first, we pay no attention, then repeated actions cause us to begin to focus as more dots are placed, then it hits us square in the chest.  A picture is emerging.  A picture where God has removed His hand from this great country and His permissive will is allowing the forces of evil to tear asunder the once great fabric that makes up our nation.

Our own government, who on one hand is facilitating the destruction, and on the other preparing to survive it, rising from the ashes as the sole arbiter of right and wrong, grantor of all rights and power.

Honoring our God, we must be prepared to denounce this evil and disobey anything contrary to God's law.  Most of all we must be physically, financially and spiritually prepared.  Evil is already among us.  ISIS is here.  Others are coming.  Ready yourselves.

Build Threads / Redneck Dually Build Thread
« on: April 20, 2015, 09:57:36 PM »
This is a reconstruction of my build thread for my 2013 LML Dually.

This is a collection of the things I've done to my truck based on my unique desires, needs, and whims.  I do it with an eye towards folks that have an interest in learning different ways of looking at and doing things and will do my dead level best to do these in the format of DIY with pics and instructions to help those who want to know how and why I did things a certain way.

A word of caution.  I typically over think and over engineer and over spend.  I try for the subtle and factory appearing look wherever possible. (since I have an LB7 on a 12 inch lift with 37s for the not so subtle)

This will take a while to get up to speed since I bought the truck in June 2013 and have many mods and projects to get caught up on.

Here is how it began.  My DD was a 2007 MB CLS that I bought new in 2007.  At 70,000 miles on it and the month before I bought the LML, it cost me $6000 in repairs for an AC evaporator and air struts.  I had enough, plus I wanted to get a 5th wheel and my LB7 was not the right truck to pull it with because it looks like this:

So, I traded this:

On this:

Drove 6 hours to Vernon Texas from Houston after cutting the deal over the phone.

And so it begins.

In keeping with some other build threads I'll try to keep this page as an index of sorts and a list of mods:

Bought it with the Rhino Liner and B&W turnball and companion installed.

Glad I opted out of the GM steps as I went with the Raptor 6 inch oval wheel to wheel, which I love because it helps me get into the toolbox and unhook the 5th wheel.  Drove the back roads for 500 miles to break in the rear end on my way to Memphis from Vernon, straight from picking it up at the dealer.  Had to pick up the family from an extended visit to the in-laws.  So I ended the first week with 1200 miles.

First stop was my parking garage at the office to prove the guys at the office wrong, that it would actually fit.  Of course I had to bribe the building manager to raise the entrance pipe about an inch to keep it from hitting the roof.

The next week I took it to the shop to have Xpel clear bra put on the hood, front fenders and bumper cover as well as a custom patterned full rear fender piece for the hips.  If you've never investigated this stuff, I highly recommend it. It was originally developed for the leading edge of helicopter rotor blades to keep wear down from sand particles  and is now sold under many trade names.

No other mods before it was off to Ohio to pick up the new 5th wheel.  Stopped for a ROTM photo.

and then picked this up

Installed the steps

The replaced the dealer advertisement on the mud flaps

a few pop rivets and some diamond plate

Then added the Weather Tech liners

The Ladies Corner / It'll take Women to change the world
« on: April 01, 2015, 05:43:16 PM »
I believe that our future as a God fearing nation of values rests in large part on women.

Real Men, who sacrifice their own desires and urges, to raise their children in wedlock, are getting fewer and farther in between.  This mean that many times (especially in the African American community) it is up to the mothers to sacrifice and raise their children.  It is these mothers that will have to instill discipline and values in young people if we are to change the world.

In the battleground area of ideas and our political future it is also women who can move the country back from the socialist agenda to a values based society based on personal responsibility and less government intervention.

This is why it is so important for the left to portray the family values conservative politicians as the party who wages "war on women"

Yet its vile attacks like this that should serve to put women on notice that the left is not the party of women.  The left marginalizes anyone who does not tow their party line.  Strong confident values minded women?  You are degraded as a whore.  African American with conservative principles? You are an Oreo.

Bug-Out Bag and Camping gear / Land navigation
« on: March 29, 2015, 12:20:30 PM »
This is a new area of study for me.  I've relied on GPS and never had the privilege of having uncle sam train me on over land navigation.

I settled on this compass and have practiced and read up on some of the basics.  I plan to get some real world practice in the National Forest next to my BOL

http://www.amazon.com/Suunto-SS004252010-MC-2G-Global-Compass/dp/B000FEUCRW/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1427645740&sr=1-1&keywords=suunto+m2+compass

and have been looking for a "definitive" book on navigation.

2 questions for the "been there, done/doing that" guys

1. do you have a book you recommend for someone wanting to learn navigation?
2. where is a good source of maps (real maps) and satellite images.  That seems to be a dying market.  I found some USGS topo maps on line but before buying wanted to know if y'all had any good sources.

Don, I hope you don't mind me posting this here.  I'm not affiliated with them except that I've spent many hours training with them at my own expense.  These guys have DOD contracts and train PJs, Rangers and the like as welll.  And they train schmucks like me....

I thought some guys in other parts of the country might like to know of some traveling classes these guys are teaching.  I really want to take the high angle courses in CO, but haven't been able to make that happen yet.  Not a lot of high angles in Kingsville Texas, but there are a lot of spiders and fire ants and big ass snakes. (the one I'm holding is 6'3" and weighed more than 20 lb)

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Col. Oliver North
« on: March 26, 2015, 08:47:59 PM »
I sometimes differ from Don in his assessment of the timing of the collapse of our economic system, and thus conversion of assets to hard currency and tangible goods.  Not in a bad way, but I see a slightly longer horizon - perhaps wishfully since my retirement timeline is still a few years away, admittedly.

However, tonight I watched a segment with Colonel Oliver North on Fox where he was commenting on the chaos in the Middle East.  He made one very simple statement that stuck in my head and left me wondering if my timeline is off.

He said: " if you think the market drop in 2008 was serious, wait until the first nuke goes off in the Middle East.  It will take 10 years to recover"

If the Sunni and Shiite continue down the path to a broad civil war it would not be beyond the possibility to see one of them using a nuke, which would essentially collapse the fragile world economy.

Got these in the mail today.  Ratcheting hose clamp pliers and a harmonic balancer pulley holder/crank holder for the wife's Odyssey Touring.  (can I actually mention a minivan on a RMT&S web site?  Will my man card get revoked?

It 10 years old and 92k on the clock.  I'm about to retire it and mothball it for the kids to drive but before I do, I want to go through it completely and get it squared away.

I've already replaced brakes and rotors on both ends, both rear wheel bearings, flushed the tranny (2nd time), changed the PS fluid, flushed the brake system (3rd time), changed the plugs, changed the wheels and tires.

This weekend I'm going to replace the serpentine drive belt, the timing belt, all the idler and tensioner pulleys, the hydraulic timing belt adjuster, the water pump, top and bottom hoses, all the heater hoses and the thermostat and flush the coolant (3rd time)

Then will come the front and rear struts/shocks and all 4 springs and a few misc interior trim pieces the rug rats broke or tore up from the time they were born.  A good detail and it will be as good as new and ready for another 100K miles.

I've made a deal with the kids.  The oldest drives it first.  If she doesnt wreck it, it gets passed to the younger one when she starts driving (it has to survive 2 years).  It she wrecks it, she keeps it and the younger one gets the next car.  We'll see how that works.

Top photo of van is before and the bottom is after wheels and tires

Ammo & Reloading / Powder Shortage
« on: March 11, 2015, 10:22:06 PM »
I'm trying to get my reloading set up moved from my Bro in law's place to my new weekend place.  So in starting to look at powders again, its not gotten any better in terms of finding Varget, X-Terminator, H335, or just about anything else I use in bulk to load 5.56/ 3.08

Anyone got any intel on what the issue is and how the free-market economy has not caught up with the demand yet?  The demand/supply curve would tell me that these guys should raise their prices and work 24 hour shifts and open new plants to keep up but its not happening??

Humor, Good Stuff, and Red Neck Practices! / 50 Shades of Golf
« on: March 06, 2015, 07:18:08 PM »

Four guys have been going to the same golfing trip to St Andrews for many years..
Two days before the group is to leave, Jack's wife puts her foot down and tells him he isn't going.  Jack's mates are very upset that he can't go, but what can they do?
Two days later, the three get to St Andrews only to find Jack sitting at the bar with four drinks set up!

"Wow, Jack, how long you been here, and how did you talk your misses into letting you go?"

"Well, I've been here since last night..
Yesterday evening, I was sitting in my living room chair and my wife came up behind me and put her hands over my eyes and asked, 'Guess who?'  I pulled her hands off, and there she was, wearing a nightie.  She took my hand and pulled me into our bedroom. The room had candles and rose petals all over. Well she's been reading ‘50 Shades of Grey’......  On the bed she had handcuffs, and ropes! She told me to tie her up and cuff her to the bed, so I did.  And then she said, "Do whatever you want."

So--- Here I am!

AMERICAN INGENUITY! Introducing ‘Pig’s Blood Spray,’ the latest in anti-Islamic terrorism protection
5aeab4e4597911e396e612465fd22ea2_8Anti-terrorism device designed to spray Muslims with pig’s blood has Muslim heads exploding. An American inventor has been hit with ‘Islamophobia’ claims after applying for a patent on his controversial invention.
UK Mirror (h/t Linda R)  An American inventor has unveiled an offensive (to muslims) “anti-terror” system designed to spray Muslims with pig blood. The highly controversial device is the work of tinpot tinkerer Franklin R Lacy, who works in Tampa, Florida.
He has applied for a patent on a “system for protecting against terrorist and illegal invasion” which cruelly exploits the Islamic ban on eating or even handling pork. He learned of the strict Islamic laws on pig blood during “extensive travels” in the Middle East.
The patent includes drawings of the device, which will carry a warning about what's inside

The patent includes drawings of the device, which will carry a warning about what’s inside
His invention involves placing containers of clearly labelled pig blood in sensitive areas, in the hope suicide attackers would avoid detonating a bomb nearby for fear of getting covered in it. These vials of blood could be attached to trip wires and spray Muslims with the forbidden substance if they enter a certain area.
“It will keep suicide bombers from blowing themselves up near the container of pig blood because they believe that they would be guaranteed not to go to heaven,” Lacy wrote.
Anti-Islamic Terrorism units have shown interest in the product

Counter-Islamic Terrorism units have shown interest in the product
This is not the first time pigs have been roped into war against Muslims. In 2010, a patent application was filed for a similar pork-based “suicide bomb deterrent”.
A firm called South Fork Industries from Idaho has also released a pork-laced bullet called Jihawg which is designed to “send Islamist terrorists… to hell”

jihawg_ammo
Fiyaz Mughal, director of the interfaith group Faith Matters, said the device has “been created by someone who seeks to humiliate specific faiths.”  “The patent is particularly troubling if used against Jews or Muslims, because it would be deeply offensive and insulting to their faith and beliefs,” Mughal continued. (Jews don’t care because aren’t blowing people up and it isn’t a food product)
“It also means that such a product could foment community tensions and so this is very troubling indeed. (That”s the idea) One has to wonder about the mindset of someone producing such a product.”

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / American Sniper
« on: February 26, 2015, 09:53:41 PM »
I saw American Sniper for the first time today.  I know why the libtards rejected it at the Oscars.  Not a single one of them understand principles and commitment.

It was a gut wrenching movie for me and I've never been in combat.  Eastwood did a superb job depicting combat from what I can tell, even if he took some creative liberties.  Making a first round head shot at 2100 with a 300wm is highly unlikely.  That shot would have likely been made with the TAC-338 he used.  The shooting range they showed him training on was way too short as well.  Your trainer ain't snapping up a set of 10x binocs to see hits on a plate at 1000 and he'd have been run out of the Navy for missing that plate at 300-500 which is about what the distance looked like on the screen.

And I highly doubt some hajji is routinely making a 1000 yard shot with an SVD

I'm sure some of y'all have picked up on other faux pas in the film.  None the less, what a great movie.

Damn proud to be an American and a Texan.

An even more repulsed by our current president who has given all that territory back to the hajjis.

Bug-Out Bag and Camping gear / Please don't hate on me
« on: February 20, 2015, 06:25:34 PM »
I know every toothless fat redneck on Youtube has a "survival bracelet" video so please don't hate on me.  I'm headed on a back packing camping trip with my two pre stewardesses (sorry Big D, my two young daughters will never be Rangers...perhaps they can marry one.) and we are practicing fire starting and a little navigation.  This is assuming they don't completely panic being in the woods in a small tent with bugs and the like.

I was weaving some bracelets just to have some paracord handy (OK and the girls thought it was cool.  I'd rather having them weaving paracord than that silly colored rubber band mess) and needed some more supplies.  Ran across this on Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Firecord-Parachute-Emergency-Fire-Gear/dp/B00RU5O7TS/ref=sr_1_7?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1424474464&sr=1-7&keywords=fire+starter+paracord

Had never seen it before so I decided to get a little of it.  It has an extra strand in the core that is red and makes tender.  I mistakenly thought it would be flamable enough to light with just a spark from a flint but its not.  It more like parafin and needed a pile of magnesium shavings to get it going.  I like the idea but not sure if its any better than weaving in a bit of jute rope into the bracelet.

I'll report back after the trip next weekend.  ( I haven't told them that I'll have MREs with heaters.  They think if we don't get fire lit we don't eat....)

Some times it's just good to be reminded and be thankful to the Lord for what he gives.

Rom 1:18-20
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse

Gents, I'm at my outer limit of experience when it comes to LSD/Lockers.  When we raced, it was spool or nothing.

For my 2001 LB7, I'm investigating upgrades to the front and rear diffs.  I will probably start with the front.

What brands/types do you like and why?  I like the idea of a selectable locker like the ARB and I plan on having on board air like I do on the Dually.  If I have it in 4WD, its going to be off road and will benefit from a locking front diff.

I wouldst greatly appreciate the input and knowledge of the finest men

In Paris, there are neighborhoods that the police won't enter.  They have allowed the Muslims to create their own Sharia law controlled areas.  The French, like most liimp wrist-ed liberals have capitulated to aggressors for years.  This time instead of the Germans, its the Muslims, and they are incredulous about the actions and events that are happening now.

This is the new war and is coming to America.  The beheading in OK is just a foretaste.  Be on guard.  The problem is that when we speak out against the "religion of peace" we will be called hate criminals and they will seek to silence us for fear for provoking an "inflammatory" response.

We must wake up and realize that the only, and I mean THE ONLY, things these animals understand is force. You cannot reason and rehabilitate these animals.  Like the natural order that God created, we must remove these animals from society.

Faith Discussion / Origin of Christmas
« on: December 22, 2014, 09:00:21 AM »
Did you know that it wasn't until the mid 1800s that protestants started celebrating Christmas?  Until then it was strictly a Catholic holiday invented by the Catholic church to "convert" Romans in the 4th century who refused to give up their pagan festival Saturnalia.  Apparently the Protestants were losing parishioners to the Catholic church for all the festivities and rather than stand on principle, they compromised to keep the pews full.

Food for thought.  The only commanded observance, is the Lord's table in remembrance of his death for the sins of those the Father gave him. For it was His death, not birth, that provided the single holy sacrifice to satisfy a just God.

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Racism
« on: December 03, 2014, 10:17:12 PM »
Racism is alive and well in the United States
Alive and well in large part because of the so called black leaders who preach a white boogey man behind every blade of grass
They derive their power by subjugating the very people they claim to serve
By absolving them of their responsibility to behave according to societal and legal norms they create chaos in the community and damn them to a life of subsistence, crime and violence.
It is the white man's fault, they say.  Yet a dozen black men are murdered every weekend in Chicago and no one notices because it is at the hands of other blacks.  It is the white man's fault they say yet when blacks comprise 13% of the population, they commit more than 50% of the murders in America.
Deaths of blacks at the hands of police are down 70%, but they insist on blaming authority and so called black leaders perpetuate a lie with "hands up, don't shoot"
The "system" is broken they say, yet 76% of black youth are born into single parent households without a father figure to impart discipline and lead by example.
Since 1973 when Roe v Wade was passed, so many black babies have been aborted that blacks would make up 36% of the population today instead of 13% if those children lived.
In Ferguson they say "stay away from our neighborhoods with riot gear" because its racist to think blacks can't behave unviolently.  Then when the police stay away, they claim racism because white cops let their neighborhood burn by staying away.

So yes, racism is alive and well.  You just have to know where to look and you have to seek out who benefits from the story of racism.  Those very people claiming to help and be on the side of blacks.

The story the black community needs their leaders to share is easy.  Tough to hear, but easy.

don't break the law if you don't want to go to jail
don't attack a cop if you don't want to get shot
don't have sex out of wedlock and father illegitmate children more likely to end up in prison than an instituation of higher education
Stop believing that someone owes you something.  Get out and work hard.  Asians and Indians come to this country with nothing and learn to be successful by working hard.
Aspiring to be a thug or athlete is a sure fire way to shortened, miserable life.  The odds are astronomically against you becoming the next LeBron or Snoop Dog and astronomically with you for being dead or in jail if you don't apply yourself to getting an education

Mike Brown is dead because he was a thug who attacked a cop.  Learn from it. Don't be a Mike Brown and it's highly unlikely you wind up dead at the hands of a cop.

Is there anything more racist than to concede that a race of people are incapable of controlling their actions and conforming to societal norms?  I think not

Mom sent me this today and thought I'd share.  Good place to learn about food preservation.

I also added some dried beans and rice to my food storage to compliment my mountain house freeze dried and MREs.  250lbs of beans and 250lbs of rice.  And 50lbs of salt.  Used Lowes and Home Depot buckets with mylar bags and oxygen absorbers.

Self Defense and Tactics / Situational Awareness
« on: November 07, 2014, 09:20:02 PM »
I believe that the most important aspect of self defense is situational awareness.  Not putting one's self in the position to have to defend, or use force.  I'll admit that I regret turning down a scholarship to the AirForce Academy and have wondered what life had been like had a chosen the other path. (the class I would have graduated with flew in the the first Desert Storm)  Later because of the Lord's grace I knew that it was His will that led me down the path I chose.

After being married and later having children I began to understand the implications of fatherhood and the awesome responsibility to provide and protect for my family.  That led me to obtain my CCW permit and although I had been around weapons all my life, I had never had any formal training. It hit me that I needed real training that I never received because I had not enlisted.  I sought out training from people that had "been there, done that" and begin a rigorous training regimen that had me training via private lessons 5 hours a week for many years in addition to many group classes in different parts of the country.  At first I grew overly confident in my abilities and put myself in situations where I shouldn't have been.  Maybe I was subconsciously wanting to be put in a situation of defending myself.

Then at one point, I realized the last thing I ever want to have to do is be put in a situation where I have to use the skills I had learned or to take another person's life.  I am not afraid, rather I now understand that survival is more assured when you don't ever have to deploy a weapon or use the training you have acquired. Not to mention the lawyers are expensive.

Thus one of my favorite mottos " prepare for the worst and hope for the best"  Now in addition to training for the use of force, I have begun to diligently practice and seek guidance regarding situational awareness.

My wife is an Ostrich, meaning she is willfully ignorant of all that happens around her and I'm always preaching to her about being more aware. I'd like this thread to be about techniques and experiences in "awareness"  That little voice that helps you know when to change course.

I'll kick it off with a couple of examples:

Stereotypes exist for a reason.  When you see someone who dresses a certain way, drives a certain car, listen to that voice in your head.  Don't let the PC Liberals tell you not to think a certain way.

When you pull into a parking lot, such as a convenience store or gas station, take time to circle the lot.  Look into the convenience store.  Who's in there?  Is there anything going on in the parking lot?  Pay attention.  If it's not right in your mind, pull to the side or the back and wait and watch.

When you enter a restaurant, what do you look at first? Egress points, size up patrons.  Do you allow the waitress to seat you near the front with your back to the door?  Where is the safest seat?

When you take your kids to school.  Do you memorize or draw out a floor plan on the building so that you know exactly where your child's classroom is and how to access it in an emergency?

When you come home at night(or day) do you pay attention to the cars around you to make sure you weren't followed?

Do you keep the doors locked and your pistol at the ready when you hit the button for the garage door?  Do you watch and wait while the garage door goes back down before you put the car in park, turn the ignition off, unlock the doors and re-holster your pistol?

What are the things that you do to remain vigilant?

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / So there may be hope
« on: November 04, 2014, 11:22:05 PM »
As I sit here watching the election returns I begin to have a glimmer of hope for our country until I realize that in reality the ability to turn out more apathetic voters is the margin of victory.  There is no mandate, no fire in the belly of our citizenry to take the country back.  Just a bunch of people who just want to be left along to rot their brain in facebook, instagram, etc.

A win today will result only in a delay in what I believe is the inevitable.  The dependent class who demands more free stuff will continue to grow and those who work hard will be faced with the physical defense of their possessions.  The politicos of all ilk will give free stuff for votes until a breakdown occurs and we head into chaos and anarchy.  I believe it will happen in my lifetime and I'm 40 something....

Tech/Electronics / IP Cameras for the country place
« on: November 04, 2014, 10:41:10 PM »
After doing a bunch of research, I settled on a system from Q-See offered at Costco for much less than I could have gotten it anywhere else.  9 IP night vision cameras and a DVR with remote viewing and motion sensing.  The cameras can sense motion and send emails with still shots as well as trigger alarms.

It only takes a single cat5 cable to provide power and transmit video which makes them easy to install.

Medical Corner / How is Ebola affecting your preps?
« on: October 01, 2014, 11:58:09 PM »
I'm 265 miles from the ebola contaigeon and it scares me.  All the gov't wanks are professing " there is no reason for concern" but the story keeps growing about the number of people he had contact with.  Our peacful Muslim friends who want to kill us all would likely find it a great way to strike to intentionally infect people and put them on a plane to the US.  We don't even have the will to stop people from coming to this country from an Ebola stricken area.

It won't take but about 10 confirmed cases for me to punch out and head to the country place and wait for it to blow over

Ammo & Reloading / Loading equipment
« on: October 01, 2014, 11:53:31 PM »
Reloading for me takes on 2 flavors, precision and volume.  For precision, I have a Forster Co-Ax with RCBS micrometer dies to get really accurate for my precision rifles.  I use a RCBS Chargemaster and weigh each charge and do not use a powder thrower

For the high volume work, like 5.56, I use a Dillon 650 with the case feeder and trimmer die.  I can load 900 rounds an hour when I get it set and rolling.

Firearms / A Basic Survival Rifle
« on: September 17, 2014, 11:32:51 PM »
Part of surviving is not just being able to stop the zombie apocalypse with your M4gery or 12 ga with slugs, but to discretely put food on the table without drawing undue attention to your self.  Of course this also comes in handy for taking out some vermin in the back yard without getting the cops called on you because you live in the city.....And in my case it doubles as a training rifle for my two young daughters.

It starts with a Remington 597 AAC-SD, which is a nice semi auto 22LR with a synthetic stock, detachable 10 round magazine, integral weaver scope base and a 1/2-28 threaded barrel with protector.

add the AAC 22LR suppressor

Then mount a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 4X32 riflescope using Leupold 1inch medium height rings.
Set the weapon in the stand and mount the lower half of the rings using a bit of blue threadlocker.
Using a bubble level make sure the weapon is level.

Then setting the scope in the rings carefully check your cheek weld and eye relief to set the position of the scope (fore or aft) in the rings, making sure not to disturb the leve of the weapon.

Use some threadlocker on the screws that hold the upper and lower mount together. and then using a level on the elevation turrent, make sure the scope is level in the rings before tightening the scope rings.

With subsonic ammo, you now have a weapon that will discretely put food on the table in the event of TEOTWAWKI. And you can shoot for 11-14 cents a round.

What is amateur or HAM radio? What are the advantages of HAM radio versus other modes of communication? Why bother getting a license? What purpose does HAM (or amateur radio) serve?  Do you think that HAMs are just a bunch of coke bottle glass wearing geeks that live in their mother’s basement?  Well, the last one may have some truth to it….

We often take communications for granted.  Our cell phones are now an extension of ourselves and are ever present in our daily lives. Some adults among us have never known an era without cell phones, where one had to pull to the local gas station and drop a dime in a pay phone!  What happens when that infrastructure is compromised?  What happens in natural or man caused disasters?  A real man is prepared.

Cell phones are short distance radio transmitters that rely on networks of radio towers and even the internet and satellites to connect us to others.  Cell phones can and do often suffer interruptions due to power outages, tower damage from tornados or hurricanes. As a matter of fact, one of the first protocols for the government in a terrorist attack is to shut down the cellular networks to disrupt coordinated attacks. Where does that leave you in a crisis? When those disruptions happen, it is often the amateur radio operators, or HAMs, that fill the void with their own private communication capabilities.  Often during natural disasters, the first comms established are the local HAM radio operators coordinating rescue efforts and emergency radio traffic.

To prevent interference between different users, the artificial generation and use of radio waves is strictly regulated by law, coordinated by an international body called the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). The radio spectrum is divided into a number of radio bands on the basis of frequency, allocated to different uses.

The Federal Communications Commission in the U.S., regulates interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories. An independent U.S. government agency overseen by Congress, the commission is the United States' primary authority for communications law, regulation and technological innovation.

Operating without a license for a particular band, transmitting with more power than allowed, or violating other regulations, such as intentionally jamming communications or profanity are against the law.  Many HAMs take their hobby very seriously and often triangulate or hunt violators to turn them in to the FCC.  It is no laughing matter as fines can be in the tens of thousands of dollars.

As you can see in the attached allocation of spectrum the allocation of use is very complex. The FCC not only regulates who may use certain spectrums, they also regulate the amount of power that can be used to transmit in the assigned spectrum.  Some portions of the spectrum, like CB (Citizens Band) radio are open to use without a license but with limitations on the amount of power (4 watts) with which one may transmit.  Low power transmissions severely limit the distance which one can communicate using CB.

Radio waves are a type of electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum longer than infrared light. Radio waves have frequencies from 300 GHz to as low as 3 kHz, and corresponding wavelengths ranging from 1 millimeter (0.039 in) to 100 kilometers (62 mi). Like all other electromagnetic waves, they travel at the speed of light. Artificially generated radio waves are used for fixed and mobile radio communication, broadcasting, radar and other navigation systems, communications satellites, computer networks and innumerable other applications.

Different frequencies of radio waves have different propagation (how they proceed outward from the point of transmission) characteristics in the Earth's atmosphere; long waves may cover a part of the Earth very consistently, shorter waves can reflect off the ionosphere and travel around the world, and much shorter wavelengths bend or reflect very little and travel on a line of sight.  As we’ll discuss later, different equipment and classes of licenses will be needed to operate in these wavelengths.  How far one wishes to communicate will often dictate which frequencies one uses.  Some frequencies, like VHF and UHF, generally are a “line of sight” communication meaning that the broadcasting and receiving antenna must have an unobstructed path between them.  This is why most broadcast antennas are elevated on towers or tops of tall buildings.  HF communications generally reflect off the ionosphere and as such are capable of reflecting hundreds or thousands of miles.  HF is a great long distance communication mode, but generally ill-suited for short distance communications.

Amateur radio is allocated portions of the spectrum from 1.8 MHz to 1240 MHz (and some extremely high frequencies). For our purposes we’ll limit the discussion to the more common HF, VHF, and UHF.  The attached frequency allocation for HAM radio will illustrate which licenses are valid in each part of the spectrum.

In the U.S., there are three license classes. The higher the class of license, the more frequencies are available. Earning each higher class license requires passing a more difficult examination. Although regulated by the FCC, license exams are given by volunteer groups of Amateur Radio operators. Operating under organizations called Volunteer Examiner Coordinators, volunteers administer and grade tests and report results to the FCC, which then issues the license. U.S. licenses are good for 10 years before renewal, and anyone may hold one except a representative of a foreign government.

So with all the background out of the way, let’s jump into why you would want to be licensed and what you can do with it.

It comes down to self-sufficiency. As long as you have your radio and a power source you are in control of your ability to communicate.  No “all circuits are busy” or being cut off when out of cell range or cellular networks go down due to flooding, hurricanes, tornadoes, or extremely high traffic.  Amateur radio operators are close cousins to the prepper.  Many HAMs believe in being self-sufficient and be prepared for disaster.  Their equipment is often battery powered or capable of being operated by a battery source, like a 12V car battery.  This along with portability lends itself to being able to communicate in any situation, which is why HAMs are often among the first responders to a wide spread disaster.

I challenge you to go a full day without your cell phone or GPS/navigation.  Being cut off from communications is an eerie feeling.  Imagine a natural or other disaster where the roads are gridlocked and you can't communicate with your loved ones or support network.

Where will you be when disaster strikes?  Where will your loved ones be?  Chances are you’ll be at work and your will be at work, home or taking the kids to or from school or the mall.  If you have a disaster plan, which you should, how would you know if your loved ones are going to make it back to your home, or your bug out location?  When cell phones go down, panic will set in.  If you have communications as part of your plan you can be ahead of the game and utilize other radio operators to gain intel and unfiltered information. (You don’t think the media really tells you the truth, do you?)

Anyone interested in being prepared to take care of themselves and their loved ones should at a minimum have a technician license, which will allow the use of some very capable radios including hand held radios utilizing the VHF and UHF frequencies.  In addition to simplex operation (radio direct communication to another radio) there are thousands of repeaters in operations around the country which, as the name implies, repeats your broadcast so that your signal may reach a greater distance or around obstructions like mountains or buildings. Repeaters are usually placed on tall buildings and have redundant power supplies (the building’s emergency generator and even back up battery power) that operate even in the event of a disaster. Many are even linked via the internet so that HAM operators across the country or in other parts of the world can connect using a radio whos transmissions are normally limited to short distances. These radios also allow you to monitor official emergency communications of many police and fire departments.

Many people are intimidated by the prospect of studying electronics and electrical theory to obtain a license.  The good news is that there are many study aids and the technician class license is relatively easy to obtain.  (I’ve seen 8 year olds study and pass the test)

I’ll list some resources here:

ARRL, American Radio Relay League, is the National Association for Amateur Radio and their site is a wealth of knowledge about all things HAM
http://www.arrl.org/home
HamStudy.org is a great place for licensing information and study guides, including web based practice tests and flash cards
https://hamstudy.org/
KB6NUs HAM Radio Blog http://www.kb6nu.com/tech-manual/

Once you have studied and are ready to take the exam you can search for locations near you here:

http://www.arrl.org/find-an-amateur-radio-license-exam-session

Don’t worry, once you pass the test HAM operators are like a family, they have regular meets (one chapter I belong to meets for breakfast every Saturday) where they discuss and debate, but mostly to help each other with learning more about the hobby. They also regulary hold “nets”, or gatherings on a predetermined frequency where you can practice your skills and understand the protocol for operating during a disaster or crisis.

I hope this short primer has been enough to spark your interest in taking your Real Man Survival skills to the next level and obtaining at least an entry level license for amateur radio.  Let the discussion begin!
