What are thoughts from the group on the 17 HMR ?

Post by: EL TATE on February 04, 2016, 01:47:16 PM: I would imagine at long distance that flight path could be easily disturbed with such a light round, but having spend my youth with a Benjamin Sheridan .177, I can say that with enough speed behind them they are decent tack driving projectiles at short distances.

Post by: Dawg25385 on February 04, 2016, 01:54:34 PM: I bought a Savage 93r17... haven't shot it yet, but I liked the velocity of the round for target shooting... I don't hunt with it, and would prob grab my 10/22 for a pesky racoon or possum or something.

2550 fps on the 17hmr vs 1255 on the 22lr and 2000 on the 22mag in the test below... also you get significantly less drop out at distance

I don't have a 10/22 in my safe other then a single shot 10/22 over under 410

Ok so back up one step. Doesn't the Ruger take the same bullet?

WE HAVE BEEN DOING WEEKEND TRIPS TO THE RANGE WITH THE BOYS (AGES 7 & 10) TEACHING THEM ALL THE THINGS I WANT THEM TO LEARN BEFORE HUNTER SAFETY CLASS. MY 10 YEAR OLD USING THE 22 AND THE 7 YR OLD USING THE 17. I FORGOT HOW MUCH FUN THOSE GUNS ARE. MY 17 HAS ALWAYS BEEN MORE ACCURATE AND RELIABLE.

The 17 is supposed to shot very flat, but not a long range gun.

22wmr is not a really long range round, but a much heavier bullet.

I like the 22wmr as I already have a PMR30.

Then you have the Ruger single six which happens to be my favorite gun to carry on a stroll thru the woods stuffed in my back pocket.
