D.O.T. / Evil Red Dog Lucifer
« on: March 22, 2018, 05:42:26 PM »
Technically her name is Lucy and no we didn't choose it she came to us with that name at nine weeks old roughly. She is currently 18 months old and is a registered golden retriever. A nice family of four purchased her a little over a year ago and decided that she wasn't for them. They had an ad up on a local board right before Christmas 2016 trying to get rid of her. I wasn't up for dishing out a bunch of money for someone else's pick of the liter however we had one 8 year old golden and with me working from home it just worked out that we ended up with her. She's a sweet puppy but has an alternate personality which we nick named Lucifer and it is fitting. Here she is today while I'm working on her new ivory palace. Note, I'm sure she is not asleep but recovering from the last thing she decided to chew or dig up and quite possibly planning my demise. Don't let her fool you she can be a reign of terror.

So last year she destroyed our small back yard. I had to place guards around our young trees and the stone weed guard is a favorite for her to pull up and drag all over the place as she shreds it. So the wife and I had enough by last fall and wanted our back yard, deck and hot tub area back. So I started building this last fall and essentially got the rough structure in place. The roof line isn't quite level as I used the existing fence as the back or upper mount for the roof. I pulled up the sod and laid down chain link fence first to keep digging to a minimum then added stone over it. Today I built the front wire fence panels, both ends are removable. On the left end I need to build them a patio of sorts to sun themselves and give them a place to lay which is not on the stones, maybe add a dog house once it turns cold again. The covered portion is roughly 5 foot x 18 foot with another 5 foot of fenced in patio to be added. This will allow us to not have to board them on long weekend trips (neighbor boy will assist) as well as keeping our backyard intact.

I get the larger front winch, I don’t like the rear winch (kind of, but not really, buy winch accessories and learn how to use them properly and they are a lot less than a 10k winch and extra weight etc.). You live in the land of trees Don not the Sahara.

Cargo basket, ok not much weight or cost added. The rest of this stuff I’m just sitting here and shaking my head honestly.  1500# is a lot of weight to add even to a 1 ton that is already a pig weight wise.

And running a lift pump besides to help it out I think right?  I don't think the LML cp4 is like the LB7 injectors where you know they are going to go it is just a matter of time and miles before they do.  Remember when reading on those forums the small percentage of people posting about those types of problems can be a lot louder then the majority of people that aren't having any issues and never have a need to post.  The only thing that had me thinking about swapping to a cp3 when I had my LML was that a cp4 failure could take out stuff down line and cost a whole heck of a lot more to fix then just the swap.
That is a large part of it for me as well
The loss of the CP4.2 means the loss of the injectors, a massive removal and cleaning of the entire fuel system. The return line pushing contaminated fuel back into the tank would call for a removal and cleaning of that, as well as the lines and perhaps of the lift pump as well.

I think the amount of labor to make all that right, along with the prospect of possibly a follow on failure due to a missed metal shard impinging a replacement injector begins to speak of a nightmarish scenario of thousands of wasted dollars.

Now about the power, and how I use it.

I purposely use lower settings because I know of the limits of the Allison.

In a perfect world of no financial constraints, I would replace the Ally and converter with something designed to hold 800 HP. I would use a better primary turbo and perhaps a low pressure turbo as well, and a modified CP# capable of supporting a more agressive tune. I would likely install head studs and/or other pieces of insurance to keep it all safe and secure

Why you ask?

I have long wanted to add a bit more structure to the front end to push away trees (or cars) that I seem to be encountering. I wold like to upgrade to a 16.5K winch, and add a 10K winch to the back end. I'd like to add a couple skip plates and a roof rack and one or two well designed roll bar loops to the exterior as a part of that roof rack.

Adding that extra 1500 lbs or more would slow the truck down a lot. 8700 (current weight) + 1,500 = 10,200 which would need a bunch more HP just to be able to run around (then) like it does now.

And that is why I'd like to add more HP/torque.

I think adding another 1500# is insanity myself. Honestly I don’t see the benefit in exchange for the added weight & cost.

I read that write up from him a couple weeks ago (guessing prior to him making this video). Definitely raises some eyebrows

The other thing is ten / fifteen years ago the gasser v8’s made 300 hp in the hd pickups. At this point that’s a V6 output number. So I think you’re a lot of money ahead in a hd gas version with decent hp / torque figures.

The reality is these diesels have gotten to the place where they are just too expensive for the average joe. One thing if you can bill the cost out monthly but to just pull a trailer once every month or two I just don’t see it.

The retrofit source has the Morimoto relays for light bars. All of the stuff they sell is first class. A bit pricey but works good.

Good info, I think I’m set for now as I ordered the right hella relay block (not inexpensive either) but needed a solution & should come in by Friday.

Been busy with other jobs, hoping to get more time on jeep tomorrow (want to get started on dual battery setup).

I had the bandsaw out today running a couple cutting jobs & managed to get the mounts cut for holding the axle in place to weld truss on. I need to drill several holes and I’ll add pics and detail what I’m doing in that regards hopefully tomorrow.

Several items for various upgrades should arrive by Friday. Hoping to square away wiring the relay box, set of A pillar switches, light bar and dual battery setup sometime at latest next week. Goal is also to get truss completed by end of next week as well. Oh & taxes too!

Is it possible to get sponsors that pay per link? No $$ up front from them, but when a sale is linked to RMTW with maybe a sale? Few pennies here and there will add up quick!

From the bill he posted those were annual prices not monthly

Snatch block off each corner to two separate trees one either side of container, truck pulling one & tractor pulling the other. I would think it would move it that way as your splitting the load in half then multiplying the force with the blocks.

Kind of, hoping for either a block to stick relays in or a plug that already has a mount built in. The ones with the mount built into the relay don’t help me much as I already now own twice as many bare relays as I actually need thinking that hella relay block was going to work out.

Edit: for the record I can find the bare relay block holders on eBay I’m just too lazy to buy them as I have to wire up the pigtails, so may have to go that route if I can’t find a cheap alternative with pigtails. Apparently after further research I bought a hella micro relay box (didn’t realize there was such a thing as a micro relay) & regular sized auto relays are what I had in stock.

So after moving this rigid light bar box around three dozens times I figured today was as good as any to install it. I got as far as getting it mounted and realized the Hella relay block doesn't work with the hella relays I purchased.    Quite honestly I'm not sure what relays this block is supposed to use as the actual hella relays are identical to any other automotive relay I have ever bought. So wiring will be put off until I find a nice 3 or 4 spot relay block holder with pigtails. If anyone has a good link to one let me know. Oh and just for Ashley, we now have symmetry! Can't have him with his panties all in a bunch when he visits this summer.....

Couple things I will add in here. First the winch and bumper maybe added 150# to the front end which did help the ride.

Warn doesn’t include battery disconnects in the cables when they send you a winch however it’s good insurance to add them. The contacts in winches especially as they age have been known to stick while winching. This actually happened to me years ago and luckily the old timer who was winching me with his eb had his battery relocated to passenger rear with no tailgate. I always wondered why he never tightened up the negative battery terminal on that truck. Occasionally while riding he would have to jump out and twist the terminal to get it to start. This always annoyed me and I would just shake my head. That is until late one evening early one morning he was winching me and doing so from a side access road to this particular trail. He was parked up on a 15’ ledge, the contacts stuck on that old 8274 winch and started dragging him towards the edge. He panicked for what seemed like an hour putting both feet to the floor on his brakes. Then he recalled why he kept that battery terminal permanently loose.

The other thing we were very surprised at is how much bump steer adding this front bumper fixed. If I would have to guess it took a good 80% of the steering issues away. I had figured it would help some with the large lift and flimsy unibody frame design but was overly surprised how much it helped. I have no doubt once we add cross over steering and a better track bar mount with its own brace that the steering will be 100%

Thanks Tate, at least I know who’s name to be cussing when it breaks on that first run!

As far as gear ratio the front 60 will be 5.38, Tate and I discussed this ratio at length. Maybe he’ll post up that chart and explain (actually I think he did post it way earlier in this build, I’ll try to find it). So my specs were a 37-40 inch tire, my motor I have now likes rpms (now that I sealed up this couple spots that were seeping from the back of valve covers) and I have a manual 6 speed. Definitely the gearing will help on the trails and with that large of tire I think 70mph is a safe top speed on highway. Tate with his vast knowledge & he’s provided parts for a lot of jk builds thought this was the way to go. Who am I to argue with that?

And like always, aggressive work of this nature is not without its attendant issues.

I confess, I am growing a bit weary of always breaking something. I am going to fault these best in the world tractors some. John Deere's quality is simply not there. Stuff is hanging low to get caught, the transmissions and gearboxes break down, and I think the smaller tires on this heavier 66HP tractor are simply too small. This time I was just pushing dirt and the tire popped off the rim. The weight and HP of this tractor just overloads the tire. A larger tire would likely survive. This time the tire has been destroyed, as in no sealing bead remaining

I also ordered up the new air needle scaler, after visiting a couple local stores I decided to just buy a good IR unit (my 1/2 impact and 3/8 butterfly impact are a almost 20 years old and still perform great) but I will warn you it is a pandoras box as you I wanted a pistol version and they have you start out with an air hammer version. Then you add the air needle attachment and then all the tools available for the air hammer and by the time you are done your wallet is a couple hundred lighter.......

So by the time the air needle attachment shows up it will be end of next week. In the meantime I am planning on fixturing up the 60 housing to weld and assemble this currie 9.

Ok, so as promised here are a few teasers of the recent shipment in from Randy's Ring and Pinion courtesy of our own Tate. My plan tentatively is to finish the Currie rear JK 9" housing and install it. Then while I still have the ability to move it around via the front axle is to have a new rear driveshaft built. Then install it and pull the front driveshaft and run the deep new gearset on the current 33" tires for awhile. Since currently the jeep is really only a four speed as I rarely see highway with it the deep gear set will be ok and I'll just use the fifth and sixth gear more for awhile as I finish up the front end and install that axle then larger tires and wheels.

I do have a 9 axle from my old EB however the chunk was a stocker nodular unit with bearing bores too small for the 35 spline axle shafts in this currie 9 so first on the list was a new center chunk with larger bearing bores to accommodate those axles. Unit looks to be rather beefy I might add.

Then a new carrier, Tate makes some wild claims about this Grizzly locker (monster truck pictures he sends claiming it is running this unit  ) but regardless this little peanut carrier has one heck of a warranty standing behind it so I guess we will try it out.

add in fresh a set of 5.43 Yukon gears and we should be in business

and to top it off with a master install kit American made Timken bearings tightly wrapped in Yukon packaging

Thanks again, Tate!  :beercheers:

Never welded to cast. Do you use SS wire as I have heard?

Sure my D60 on the Sub will benifite from a truss with that 1000lb above it.

Nope, I will be using a good Lincoln wire for steel as always. I’ve actually never heard to use stainless, last time I welded up some ford 60 knuckles I had it and the gas for the stainless wire available & did not. I do think I have a spec on a different wire somewhere though, I’ll check but don’t think it is a stainless wire.

As far as a truss the only reason I would run one is if you need mounts for suspension (links etc), plenty of 60’s running around under a Cummins or two built without issue. Possibly weld the tubes to the housing maybe but not even sure that is needed as you don’t hear them turning in the housing like the corporate 14 bolts tend to do. What I’m saying is I think if you want to spend the coin there are weaker spots I would focus on before adding a truss. Just my 2 cents

Way cool......so, an air needle scaler is basically, an air powered punch that pecks away at the fresh weld?  I remember my dad manually hammering cast iron as/after he was welding it and the whole pre-heat/post heating.  Also think he had some special rod for the stick welder just for cast.  How do you afix it to the table, clamps?

Think of it as more of a steel massaging tool than a punch. I'm no wizard at welding cast, normally knuckles and center sections are made of a ductile cast steel and it accepts welding better than some cheaper versions of cast. My opinion is if you want the best way to weld cast then arc welding is the best and they make some rods specially for it as you mentioned. These rods I think have some flex or give to them once welded that lends itself to welding a different steel to the cast steel. The idea of the air needler is to massage the weld during the cool down phase as the materials cool and contract at different rates. As far as the table, not sure exactly yet. Most likely I will cut some tube or angle and weld up some cradles for the axle to lay in. I may also make a mount to bolt the inner c on the bottom on each side to keep them solid and maybe even a couple mounts into the housing via the cover bolts. The idea being we want the axle to be rigid and not be able to move until it is completely cooled, this will keep it fairly straight. It's also worth noting it is a front axle and you have a little more lead way I think than a rear. I'm sure there are guys with more experience with cast and welding axle assemblies than I so if I'm mistaken on anything please feel free to correct me.

Looks like you’ve done this before.  It looks, to the untrained eye, that they had you remove more of the housing on the short side than you really needed to?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I've swapped axles and welded on them, recall I'm on the cheap side (actually this is the most I have ever spent on an axle for an original build) so being cheap I make my own stuff or cobble it together normally. See the below link, it's missing a few brackets at this point that fit in there.
