I recall the shot tower in Baltimore, MD. Grew up in the country maybe 25 miles north. I believe that was the tallest shot tower of all, and made many a ball used in the civil war

It wasn't part of the merit badge, but when I was working at the Boy Scout camp during the summers, our range director, an amazing Vietnam Navy vet, would teach us how to cast lead balls, bullets, and drop shot. we eventually got in trouble because we had been using the wooden fort tower to drop the shot, and kids being kids, missed the bucket and scorched the side of the tower. Real cool and fun before it ended though.
