So a number of years ago I picked up this '69 Mustang.
My dad was shocked, as I'm Bowtie to the core.
I splained to him I had a list of cars, not all Chevys, that given the opportunity I would buy.
So that was 2011-12, not real sure.
I know very little about it, save for 351W, auto, originally red-ish.
Previous owner, second I believe, had his father start some restoration.
Some panels replaced, some bondo applied, and this blue shot to help preserve it.
It's been sitting in a storage yard for about 10-12 years now.
He drove it here to park it, so it was in running order...
Not sure what happened in the past 12 months, but the ground got soft.
Real soft.
Fast foreword to today.
'They' are cleaning up.
Everything must go.
My plan is to jack it out of the mud and see if it runs.
The motor turned by hand so I have hope.
More to come as the day goes on.

What's the story of the powewagon in the background? That would be an awesome truck! Did it get scrapped or is there another buyer taking it home. Load it up with the mustang!
Oh and awesome find on the car and how does it appear so rustfree. I would think just sitting in the wet stuff as much as you get would cause to to crumble. sorry for the start of a DOT!

The power wagon isn't for sale...
The owner has been offered 10k for it.
It drove here as well in the early to mid 90's.
The car isn't rust free.
The floor pan is almost rotted out.
It was some lipstick put on it to preserve it.
It worked.
And there isn't anything other than DOT that could be expected.

I can understand the owner not wanting to sell the Power wagon. Especially if it was driven there in the 90s! With a decent amount of love he could drive it again! Still awesome!

So back on topic.
Got it jacked out of the mud.

Added a redneck gas tank, as the lack of gas cap leads me to believe it is a good idea.

Gave it an ounce or two of primer gas in the carb.
Turned the key and it fired!
A few of those and it was running...sort of.
But pouring fuel out of the overflows.
Like half a gallon real quick like.
So off with the carb to fix the stuck needle and float.

Put it all back together and the fuel leak is gone.
Unfortunately it won't idle. I suspect there is gunk everywhere inside it.
I may throw it in the ultrasonic cleaner and see how that works.

I suspect it wouldn't take much.

I tried my luck at if the trans was working.
Put it in drive while feathering the gas pedal to keep it alive.
It runs, but only off of the accelerator pump gas.
It made an ugly clunk and spun the tires out.
Back in a hole...
But I have a winch, and used it.
Got it a couple feet out of he wheel holes and then drove it ahead 15 odd feet.
So it sort of works.

Now to get it running better.
I've still got a couple weeks to get it out of here, but time is of the essence for me.
I'll likely see what I can do today, as I'm on it already, and there's a yard sale at my house today...

Oh, and now that I can see under it better, it's a lot more rust free than I thought.
Might not need a new floor actually.
Get it running first and on he trailer.
Then I need to empty out and inventory the parts that currently fill all but he drivers seat.

So being the yard sale is still ongoing, the carb is in the ultrasonic tank at work.
We'll see how it looks in 30 mins.
Unfortunately the heat was off, so it may take longer than I'd like.

So I put it back on the car.
It will run now, but probably around 1100-1200 rpm.
I had to manually put it on the high idle step.
Then it ran...albeit really rough.
My video didn't upload right so I'll have to try it again.
Tomorrow, too up trans, power steering, try to find some brakes and go for a little toot.

It's still in he storage yard.
Hopefully tomorrow I get it on the trailer and bring it home.
It's low on trans oil, so I didn't want to move it too much.
It has no brakes, almost ran into the truck when I pulled it foreword.
Those two items on agenda tomorrow.
And maybe a bit of a burn, then load it up and bring it home.

Well you do have a winch, so manually loading it was what I was thinking. Driving it on is much betterer!

Great find, and it runs with paperwork! Just and FYI. I fixed one that sheared the pin in the dist drive. At least it was in front.
Looks like a goat and a Vacation ford there too.

There's a lot of things that could be making it run so rough.
The carb has now been eliminated.
I'm going to get to dig out my timing light!
Haven't used it since I was 16 or 17.
Definitely thinking timing could be a part of it.
But time will tell.
I'm hoping to drive it onto the trailer, but worst case it will be winched.

Hey Sam, did you blow out that venturi real good, the one that has a single bolt for the accelerator passage. The 2 tubes that stick down can be a bugger to clean sometimes. My second guess would be burnt points (if it has them).

From the sounds in the video points and dwell were on my thought list as well as my wagoneer acted like that when they were out of adjustment and/or burnt. don't know much about carbs, but Ken is usually right so...

Ken, I had it all apart in the ultrasonic for a couple hours.
I blew he Venturi tubes and they were clear.
Carb is now sound, other than it needs new gaskets and seals from me shaggin with it.
It is burning a ton of gas though.
I think the needles are way out to lunch.
I put them back where the were, four turns...and that has me wondering.
I can see gas flowing out of the Venturi as well so it's way too rich.
I suspect points are an issue as well, it will get some form of a tune up, but certainly not an 'Oil Change' as one of our fine members does.

Oh yeah, almost forgot, it loaded itself onto the trailer without issue...

A quart of trans oil helped a ton in forward, still lacking power in reverse tho.
I need to decide if I'm keeping or selling.
That will determine my course of action in he big picture.
Little picture is to get it running and driving proper.

Simple, effective, and proved the fuel pump is good.
Oh, and didn't bring the water, dirt, and whatever is in the one at the back...
And no need for a gauge, you can see the level. Lol.

Nice find! My brother in law has one nearly identical that's been stored inside 20+ years, I've been working on him the last year or two to sell me that car.

Back in 1990 when I did it, thing cost me around $15K to complete
Sell it...Spend $$$ on island home and save for replacement truck
Don't buy replacement truck until you have 1/2 to 3/4 of the cost in cash...

Don, I'm totally leaning that way.
I see two courses of action.
First, inventory it to see if it's all here and sell as is.
Second, put a k or two in it, few hundred in tune up, miscellaneous little things (bad bodywork type things) shoot fresh paint. Lipstick on a pig type stuff. This might net gain it in the end.
I'm well aware of the $$$ commitment to do it right.
It was one of a few on my list that given the opportunity I would buy.
So I need to walk the road of do I want it enough for the poor investment it inevitably will be, or walk away from it.
I am bowtie to the core, so that plays on me as well.

Yeah, late 60's mustang, hemi cuda, then the standards.
Late 69's stingray, 442, 68-69 Camaro/Firebird, early novas, etc.

Well, besides being a Bowtie guy as well.
Unless you really want to restore it and show it and have a passion for that car, sell it.
It has paperwork, that adds A LOT to the value.
I would see what they sell for and toss all the info in a hat on how much you want THAT car.

I once owned a 1969 Corvette Stingray, 427 4 speed with 4.11 gears. It was a bit of a pig...Not as fast as you may think, and handling was not good at all. But, stab the throttle and you were in tire smoke city!

friend of mine and his son are on a semi cross country trek for the sons HS graduation present in his built 79 scout. '05 bow tie drivetrain (w/dana 300 tcase) built 44s. recaro seats. fuel rims wrapped in G2s. thing rides/drives like silverado. it's awesome. can't wait to hear all about it once they return.
