Duane and I are having a conversation about weapons to carry while adventuring outwest. He spends time in Wyoming and there are increasing sightings/encounters with Grizzly bears.
I have run into Black Bear a couple of times this year.
He carries a 5-shot .44 mag pistol on all outings. I have a 12 gage for the campsite.
With two western trips firming up for next year, I want a pistol/long gun combo. Was thinking around something like a Ruger .44 mag pistol and a good lever gun in .44mag. My thought is the same ammo, so no shortage but a pistol for hiking but a reliable long gun for campsite.

My go-to lever gun is Marlin. But Marlins are a big no-go nationwide. That has me looking at another side ejection, the Henry. I really wanted a Marlin trapper with the standard pistol comb and a big loop handle. Henry offers straight-stocked guns like my Winchester 30-30, which I do not like...but does have the bog loop lever.

Also considering .45 long colt for both in lieu of the .44 mag as I used to shoot that as a teenager in a pistol.

A true up bill is the electricty you use above the power you make with the solar panel system.

I have had the system for about 8 years now. True up has been around $1200 for the last few years. You still pay for gas and a $10 "grid" fee every month. I have a 7000 watt system and just now adding a 2500 watt system.

Kali has raised there electric rates a lot the last year or so. Rates are the highest from 1600-2100. When you want to run the AC and my wife wants to do the wash.

Don, get a Marlin 45-70 guide gun and a bfr in same caliber….. then we can twin when you’re out here.

I carry a Glock 29 in 10mm which is what all the hunters up here carry with Buffalo bore hard cast bear loads (sorry Charles nobody is carrying a sw 500). Get a good chest rig and then whatever for camp. I like 45-70 but that 12ga is good if not better. We have a bear every sq mile up here.

I have a Remington tac 14 too, or I did but the middle daughter has it for home defense atm. You could easily carry that and be one and done.

Don, despite Shawn’s ill advice, get a 500 or 460. You may only get one shot so you have to make it count. I have a 44 mag with hot loads and a hopped up G20 10mm that puts a 200grain Hornady XTP downrange at 1350fps and I still would rather have the big bore in Grizzly country.

I’m still browsing waiting on the right price to get a 500. Hard cast 500+ grain is great sectional density which is what breaks bone and puts them down.

200-240 grain is not enough to break the bone.

Or you can just carry a little bell and some bear spray….

I vote for the 10mm. With animals you may not get the time to raise a rifle in close quarters. Plus you have more shots.

Not personal experience, I read all the time how the 10mm stopped big animals.

Everyone is a critic……

Plenty of grizzlies dropped with a 10mm & more rounds can’t hurt unless you shoot your buddy in the shoulder during the mayhem. Which happened over in whitefish last month. Two hunters scouting ended up between a momma grizzly and her cub at 15’. They got her put down in the ruckus but one ended up with a friendly fire wound.

From all the recent accounts I’m hearing the bell is a good idea and trying not to startle them. The wife typically carries the bear spray when we’re out.

Well, not really

I like everyone's ideas including the big bore magnum pistol. That BFR of Magnum research is awesome, but you're talking to "Old Mr. Lucky" here. I probably had more rounds fired at me in a single day than most humans alive over a lifetime! And I flew a couple thousand of those days in "ingin country." So, I have that going for me.

And if I actually run into a griz, and he gets me, I hope I go down with a blade in my hand and an empty weapon. Would be a good death and all that. I do actually look at my current days as "Extra credit" sometimes and am not deserving of them. Should have punched the clock at around 0345 Jan 17th, 1991. One of those SAM's someone fired should have fried my bacon, but I am still here. Should have been heaven bound in Baghdad when I got IED'd, but made it through that one too.

Lucky? Hardly...Prayed over and protected? Absolutely. Love all your ideas as much as I do, but I still feel reasonably strong on the single caliber concept with a long gun and a pistol.

The discussion is mostly academic in nature...
Marlin is not building lever guns.
No one has any stock.
Winchester is top ejection (No go to me)
Henry is also hard to come by in the carbine/big loop configuration

So maybe it is down to a handy .22 rim fire and a cow bell!!!!!!!!!!

Don’t know which camp is right but do know if I planned to be in grizzly country I would want as much horsepower as I could get. Old saying says difference between griz and black bear scat is the griz is full of little bells and smells like pepper spray.

Everyone wants new toys but if you can "run what you brung" to the party you're ahead of the game.I'd rather have a 12ga I've used and know and it's all muscle memory when needed that have a new something or other and have a second or half a second brainfart.

This bear stocked my bosses group for 12 days while hunting moose.
He Carrie’s a 10 mm and his only purpose to pull his hang gun was in hope one of the others in his party would take notice at his gun fire and shot him with an actual rifle, he doesn’t wear any bells and doesn’t bother with spray cans

He’s got more outdoor experience then most I know. I’d trust it

Two moose from the hunt. He wasn’t after grizzly but he found them in Alaska

Sadly a thing, they even sell 10mm socket kits.

As for Grizz I’d have a 12 gauge you know and some big revolver like a 460 or 500.
I have a buddy who is a wildlife protection guy and that is is carry choice.

Frankly, I’d rather not have the encounter as most would.
Me, I’d run what’s comfortable and familiar.

IMO anything small handgun is just going to make noise. And 357 likely is close to that.

10mm is a great round but to powerful for the FBI (they had their own loads, really) Never a fan of wheel guns.

That dwarfed into the 40cal, now the 9mm is all the rage. Still a 9mm though, I would not think of it for something big, like bear or Kens GF.

I still like the 40. Way heavier than the 9mm, but still not a bear stopper without the right ammo.

Three trips for the whole lot. Was a full boat. This was a couple weeks ago.

This past weekend was dock move day. With us heading out this weekend it was time before ice shows up.

A lot of the smaller ponds and water holes have formed to hard water. And yes that’s snow…

Beautiful KY fall weather, lovin' it!

Met with the barn builder today. He is now working up a bid to add on a 20X24X10 with a vaulted ceiling. He will also wrap the existing shed with the same metal as the new addition to tie it all together. Came up with a cool plan with a corner window wall and wrapped on the downhill side with the boulders I quarried. That will be built up into a stone patio. The existing shed will be a master suite on the bottom floor, an additional bedroom on the second floor along with a sizeable storage area for overflow.

Made it home late last night with final load, just shy of 18 hours. It’s official shop is out of Colorado! We even beat the winter weather that is finally settling in here between Colorado and Montana. I was able to get items which could freeze unloaded and in heated machine shop and then trailer in big shop which had me working until midnight. First frost came around 5am today.

Then today was build and ship parts then start trying to get organized. Started first fire of the season this evening. I think all of that calls for a big pour of some bourbon…..

Downtown Denver is reminiscent of Portland, the taxes are crazy. We went to Walmart one evening so wife could get supplies to make 200+ cupcakes for wedding along with the cake. The only bags they had were reuseable $$$ bags. Colorado now charges 10 cents per plastic bag but Walmart doesn’t give you that option or even have paper bags. The shop property taxes just jumped again. It’s nuts…..

Well, oem’s lasted 5.5 years and this cold snap wiped them out. Thought it started a little weak once last week. Neighbor was in town and grabbed me two new units from City Parts (independent Oreilley) super start 850 cca with 3 year warranty on them. Old ones were only 750 cca Supposedly these are American made in one of two plants here yet and they pro rate them. $380 out the door.

Great score on the mill!

I’ve been in purge mode and cleaning up garage.
No box left un-emptied no shelf ignored.

It’s still in work in progress mode but great strides have been made.

More has since left the chat, and floor i haven’t seen in a decade or better is cleaned out.
Part of this was due to necessity and part because I’m building a cnc plasma table.
Will do a detailed thread if wanted.
Unsure on timeline but parts of it are inbound and parts are being 3D printed as I type this.
Should be $600 ish not counting all the steel.

Still waiting to pickup. Guys daughter got real sick and at UCSF. Not pushing it but he said we are still a go.

I've been doing the same to mine Sam, never really finished the last cleanup. Now it looks like yours. I don't have too much stuff, just don't have places to store it all!

I sold my Langmuir for what I paid for it since I have the Arcdroid now. Plus they just came out with a X2 table allowing 48 long parts!

I did just make a deal for this wesco lift though, should pickup tomorrow..

We just scored a nice 3x7 wood bench for him and just finishing the RR on it (basically new wood top).

Got harvest done. No major breakdowns and no injuries. The yields suck. Its going to be another tough year. I will be looking to do some trucking to try to help pay some bills.

If we spent one dime helping out the invaders from the southern border before making income levels right for our farmers and taking care of our military, we are dead wrong...Just my opinion. This farmer provides the very food we (and others for that matter) eat. We should have programs in place to make this a profitable venture for these people. Why do we leave it up to them to work second and third jobs just to pay their bills? And those bills aren't lavish homes and sports cars. No, those bills are expensive machines and the buildings to house them, fuel, and even the seeds that produced a non-yielding crop. It's opposite day when it comes to our own government and its people.

So been busy with life’s challenges and blessings.

We called fall early this year as travel ended boating season early.
One of our dogs had a lump start on her lower jaw a few weeks prior.
We were heading to vet on our travels and had it looked at along with some broken teeth.

Mama’s been doing her Christmas hampers thing for the community, helping one of our friends who’s husband suddenly passed, baking for the gravel clubs bake sale, and doing cleanup she’s out off as well.

I’ve managed to get my mess mostly cleaned out of my garage. When I was working on the truck this summer I noticed the gas was not shutting off properly with my mig. Well that started an oil change.
I picked up a new torch assembly and base to go to the euro connection.

Installed socket into welder.

Did a tertiary check and found when I opened the gas valve gas was flowing…
Took the old torch apart to find a mechanical gas valve they the new setup didn’t have.

So into the interwebz to sort out a solution. My welder is deca brand which is fairly well known in Europe and to my surprise and delight there was an abundance of intel for me.
A quick and easy Amazon trip had me set up with a 220 solenoid valve. Will get installed when I get home.
While I was at it I changed out the cable connectors as well.

Crusty and broke when I tried to loosen lug.

And maybe, just maybe ran a touch hot for a bit…

Yesterday Holly had the broken tooth removed. The vet thinks the lump on her jaw is a fatty lipoma and was not overly concerned with it.
