Title: Kyle's LBZ Build
Post by: Dawg25385 on March 01, 2015, 07:45:09 PM
Well guys, here goes! My new-to-me truck arrived yesterday! This thread will capture all the things I do to the truck.

For those that haven't followed in the other thread, I had an LMM and decided to sell in and get an LBZ. Basically the same truck in terms of color and trim, but I wanted an OBS with the pre-DPF powertrain. Found this truck in Wisconsin, and made a deal and got in out here.

Here it is arriving via a great Transporter, Bob Wilson. He's a Christian, and we had a nice chat about doing God's work as he unloaded the truck. Was really cool, and I'm happy I was able to do business with him.

With my ugly mug...

Got it washed up (actually wife did, I was busy rebuilding a shower enclosure getting ready for tile) before attacking the front brush guard. I said it'd be the first thing to go, and I am a man of my word!

Here's how she sits right now...

And to cap off the day, i removed the gaudy dealer sticker off the tailgate

I already ordered a set of Weather Tech mats for the front and rear, they should be here in the next week or so... got to sneak that one in early, as the truck didn't have any mats when I got it. It also has a Prodigy brake controller, and a B&W turnover ball already installed, which is nice, because those 2 items were already on my build list!

And finally, here's my "build" plan...

Edge Insight CTS and Dash Pod - done
EGT Probe - done
Curt Class V Xtra Duty hitch - done
Fumoto drain valve - done
Fuel Filter bleeder screw - ready to install
Level Tow Mirrors - done
De-Mold/De-Badge - done
MBRP 4" w/ muffler - done
MBRP wrapped 3" down pipe - done
Fuel Maverick 17x9 - done
Cooper ATP 285/70/17 - done
MA Pump Rub Kit
Transgo Jr
Fass 150 Lift Pump
EGR Blocker Plate - purchased
ATP DSP5 EFI Live Tuning
PCV Re-route - ready to install
AMP Research running boards
Beans Sump
Titan 52 Gal Fuel Tank
HID/LED conversions

Some of this stuff is going to take me awhile... between building our new house, and an unexpected tax bill from Uncle Sam, have to watch the dollars and cents... and wifey runs the money ;) so it will be a slow process, but we'll get there  8)

nice looking truck kyle.

thanks Nate! I'm totally pumped right now... went to the store and wife stayed in the truck... when i got in the truck she was like "you really like it huh"... i just grinned... she said "you were smiling the whole walk back to the truck"

it runs great, body and paint are flawless, interior is great (minus normal seat wear). only thing is there's a little bit more surface rust under the bed than i hoped, but nothing a little wire brush and Don's favorite rust converter can't fix. I was going to attack it with some black paint/coating anyway, just a couple extra hours of work now is all

Looks awesome Kyle.
I'd jump on getting the EGR blocker in sooner than later tho.
To do it without EFI you need a 'finger stick' to block the codes.
I really feel stopping the soot is a high priority.

In any case looks like a sound plan. I did the Profab downpipe, it fit like a dream and we're lucky enough that it is very easy on the LBZ.

A recommendation would be to re-think the bfg's.  The E rated ones dont last long on the heavier trucks.

Thanks guys! I feel the same way about the EGR... It's more of a funds issue why it's not immediate. I have the PCV reroute kit already, so I can do that sooner than later.

What would you recommend in lieu of the BFG's? The new K02s have 50k tread warranty I think... I ran Toyo AT2's on my LMM and they threw gravel like crazy.

Same color and year as mine!! This will be good.

I have the CTS to and love it. I used Idaho Rob and have a DSP5.

Do the EGR fast, there is alot of crud in there.

Well, some good news bad news today...

Good news is I got my Weather Tech mats in, front and rear. They fit great and are well worth the money in my opinion.

Bad news is when i was looking around a little closer trying to game plan for my rust mitigation and hitch replacement, I noticed that the transporter damaged my rear spring clips when chaining the truck to the trailer (kind of a knucklehead thing to do). So I'll have to scope out how to best handle this... the existing clips seem like the come permanently attached to the spring packs. Any suggestions fellas?

They still look serviceable or did I miss something?

I'd say get a ball peen and get after them then move on to the next project!

Yessir! Thanks Bob. I've only got one eye left, so I'm very careful when it comes to eye protection!

Don, quick question for you also... your favorite Rust Converter, do you get that from theruststore.com?

Ever used the CRC stuff? http://www.amazon.com/CRC-Rust-Converter-1-Quart-Ounce/dp/B003HG1FGW

Looks like it is also Tanic Acid and polymer based...

No it's still real, just doesn't work worth a darn. It's way beyond legally blind. Had a detached retina when i was a kid, muliple surgeries, yadda yadda. The GOOD news is that it's not my dominant eye... and my other senses are heightened so watch out, i can hearrrrrr you  ;D

I don't like the gouges in those springs. Should be able to get the strap back in place.

Yep, shes a salt truck!!

How many limes on the LBZ?
Title: Re: Kyle's LBZ Build
Post by: Dawg25385 on March 11, 2015, 10:44:38 AM
Yeah, me either...

It's got around 85k on it. Runs and drives flawlessly. I love the truck, much better than my lmm.

Yeah, little more rust than I was led to expect, but it's in the places that are easy to tackle. Rockers and cab are fine, no issues there at all. Kind of s bummer, but I'm looking at the positive side... I wanted to treat/paint the underside anyway.

I might take the bed off, want to replace the Turnover Ball and swap out the factory hitch for a Curt class V anyway, so might just tackle the rust while doing that.

Only downer is I don't have a garage or anything at the moment, or access to a lot of my tools. I do have a friend ( fellow d-max guy) who is out of work at the moment who I might see if we can work something out where he can help me out. He's got a mini-excavator too, which would make taking the bed off way easier.

We'll see how it goes.

From what I've been led to believe, you and three buddies would be able to remove the bed fairly easily.

Is it just 8 bolts, fuel neck, and wiring for the tail lights?

I've been wanting a new air ratchet for a long time now, this might be the ticket to one  ;D

Well not entirely build related, but dad and I went in halves on a new dump trailer. Been eyeballing one for quite awhile, and finally pulled the trigger. It's a Big Tex 10SR, 10k gross.

Also, got this sweet score on Craigslist... B&W Tow and Stow for $100 bucks ($180 new). Adjustable to 5" drop which is more than plenty for my stock height truck. 2" and 2 5/16" ball, which is exactly what I need. The boat and small utility trailer are 2", the dump is 2 5/16" and so is the RV, tho I use the Blue Ox Sway Pro for the TT.

Cleaned it up last night and treated some rust. Stainless pins are currently soaking in CLR. She gets a fresh coat of paint tonight and will be good as new!

Those dump trailers are certainly handy!
Title: Re: Kyle's LBZ Build
Post by: Bob Smith on March 17, 2015, 12:34:44 PM
Nice trailer, Those dump trailers are so handy for so many things. Biggest problem with mine is it sits close enough to the ground to make for easy loading of equipment, but that makes it hard to dump material into a contained pile.

The new stinger and ball, make sure it is weight rated high enough for that loaded trailer. If your truck hasn't had the stock hitch replaced yet, that could also be a problem. Those round GM hitches are known to twist, crack, or tear apart. The tongue weight on the stock hitch is very low rated both dead weight and with weight distribution.
Title: Re: Kyle's LBZ Build
Post by: Dawg25385 on March 17, 2015, 12:42:32 PM
Yep the B&W is rated to 10k which is also the GVWR on the dump, so all good there. And the stocker hitch on the truck is going to be replaced with a Curt Class V before I put anything heavy behind her. Thanks for lookin out!

They are good guys too. I didn't have the Carb up pipe, so had not installed them yet. Called and for the same price as it would cost in the set, they are upgrading my pipe with EGR and I get the needed CARB sticker.

Check youtube, they have a great video on them being made.

Not sure if the LML in my Silvy is close enough to your LBZ's or LLY/LMM's but when I replaced the stock manifolds on mine with the high flow ones with the larger up pipes, the sound changed to a deeper, throatier tone. You'll like it.

You can. Kory and most reputable tuners can, if I read the posts correctly on DF,  tune it so you get a rumble instead of a hiss at idle. Possibly without changing anything else other than hiss to rumble.

Yes Kory can, but did you ever check out what his tunes cost?
Over $900!
That's why I want an old 12 valve
No tunes! Just turn a screw here, adjust timing or things like that
I really don't like these electronic engines!

Heck, I got EFI and DL free tunes but finally had IdahoRob do a DSP5 setup for me. Was only around $200 and I can adjust as needed.

I good tune should only run about $1-200 on your PCM. I would do an SHTF tune and a tow tune with a DSP2. Send em your PCM and you get it back in a few days ready to go.

But as we discussed before, just one lucky shot and the whole truck is down. With the CTD it takes a lot more unless it is 50 through the block.

You have the Dmax, may as well have it as you like it. Same reason mine is still getting upgrades.

JR,
LML is not the same animal at all. Everything changed in 2011
Older D-Max engines are easy with EFI Live, but the computers in LML's are double blind or something like that. It is a tuning nightmare. Kory and maybe two others can really tune them and looking on his site just last night, the tune price was over $900

http://www.dieselpowerproducts.com/p-10189-efilive-autocal-tuner-11-15-lml-duramax-by-kory-willis-of-power-performance.aspx

I used to run Kory... Had a really bad experience with both tuning and service. Switched to Rob Coddens with ATP and I'm a customer for life. Won't ever do business with Kory again, and anybody who asks for my recommendation will be directed to ATP. But I don't want to go down that road on this thread. I want to keep it positive here  :D

I know Rob's tunes come with rumble idle as default FWIW, and Rob's DSP5 is $650 I think. Not sure if that covers LML too...

And do share on the pump rub connections!!!

Fair enough. Either way, pretty sure default now by the majors (ATP, PPEI, DT) with EFI for LML is rumble idle.

I actually liked the hiss idle on stock w/delete tuning, esp when the vanes would cycle. People look around like what the world was that haha.

Yea, they do!
I don't know, it sounds weird to me especially with that 400 cu in V8 hammering away up front.

Best thing I could do would be just to extract the tunes and sell the H&S tuner for the $1500 Ken suggests and apply that toward a fresh P-Pump Cummins!

Small update, just got back from vacation Saturday and got a couple things done.

First, had to change the air filter. Old one was pretty dirty, had one laying around so figured why not. Replaced a Donaldson with a Delco OEM drop in.

Next up was the All On lights mod. Ordered the circuit board from Fleece via Merchant Automotive. Extremely simple to install. $20 bucks well spent.

Now with brights on, All On

More things waiting for next full service day... hopefully in the next month or so.

Also placed an order for some more goodies within Phase 1... stay tuned!

That's ok. I'm a bit slow too  ;D

No mess, I'm down with that!

Oh, NO!

Fluid change...

I know! I inspected everything yesterday, and the oil seriously is as clean as my wife's Acura... it looks like oil out of the bottle, no black at all. So no hurry there, it was obviously just changed at the dealer before I bought it. Trans fluid looks real clean too, though the filter looks oldish, so I might do a drain and fill on the trans and swap filters. I do want to drain and fill the diffs and transfer case too, so those are definitely on the docket for "service day." Going to use Mobil 1 Syn 75w90 in the front and rear, Mobil 1 Syn Dex 4 in the TC, and Mobil 1 Syn Dex 6 in the Trans. Finally i'm going to run Mobil Delvac 1300 in the engine, and all OEM filters. I had ran Delo 400 in my LMM, but from what I've read the Delvac is one of the better dino CI-4 oils, and is one of the best at keeping the 6.6 typewriter tick at bay...

If anybody else runs Mobil lubricants, I've attached a rebate form for a promo they're running now. I need to confirm if it applies to the the Delvac Syn ATF, which is an Allison approved TES-295 ATF.
https://mobildelvac.com/en/automatic-transmission-fluids/mobil-delvac-synthetic-atf
http://www.allisontransmission.com/parts-service/approved-fluids/on-highway-fluids

There is a separate rebate form for the Delvac line of oil...

No thought of using the Amsoil products?
That bypass oil filter system is still returning good results on oil that has been in there some 30,000 miles. Not that said I top up with new oil as the engine consumes it and I changed the filters so 3 quarts there, but the lab results continue to confirm the oil is still working at above 90% of new capacity!

Watch those oil changes though...

While you're under there you get to looking at things. You might settle in on the exhaust, then before you know it a package arrives from MBRP. Duane stared too long at that differential. Now he is dealing with all sorts of boxes with various axle and differential parts...

Not saying I am thusly afflicted, but getting carried away is a distinct possibility!

I hear ya on rollin around and gettin' to lookin' at things... already been eyeballin' that exhaust somethin' fierce...

Told ya!

Eyeballin' things for too long will cause them to fail!
Yep, proven fact!
You eyeball that exhaust much longer and you'll convince yourself it needs to come off.
Odd, though, it is made from stainless steel and will undoubtedly outlast time, but the simple act of staring at it will get it to the point where you pull it off and discard it!

Be careful young man, be careful!

I use a bypass with a Amsoil filter, just not their system and Rotella Oil. I go 10k on changes now and already did the all syn switch everywhere else.

More parts arrived... This Friday going to be installing my CTS and dash pod, reconditioning my bedliner with forever black gel dye, reinstalling my truck box and bull rings, and hopefully leveling my tow mirrors.

Btw I caught an unadvertised sale on the CTS on Amazon, as cheap as I've seen them new... $336 no tax free shipping

You'll like the CTS. Mine has been solid since they came out. I found a cool backup camera on ebay for about $20 that you can mount on the tailgate edge.

Had a great day today working on the truck… fortunately got to take advantage of some breaks in the weather to get the things done I wanted to do. First I installed my Insight CTS, then I leveled the tow mirrors, and lastly I reconditioned my spray in bedliner.

First thing in the morning, I put a couple coats of vinyl-dye/paint on the CTS pod and also an area of my dash that needed to be touched up.

Disassembling the dash, running cables, and aligning the pod.

I used the throttle cable grommet to run the EGT cable, and I also ran a couple other wires through it, knotted on each end, so I can easily pull more things through in the future without taking the grommet out.

All hooked up and rockin and rollin’

Next up was the tow mirrors. Turned out to be pretty easy, but some parts were a real pain in the butt. Getting the covers off was a chore… luckily I didn’t break the tabs off.

Drivers side, I used 2 stainless steel 1/4” washers

Passenger side, which was a little more difficult… I used 3 washers, because they were still not level with just 2.

A little trick I found… I used a fishing swivel to get the washers into place, then inserted the screw putting tension on the washes to hold them in place while I removed the swivel, since I couldn’t get my fingers in there.

I also had to make a MAYDAY trip to Ace when I accidentally flung one of the bolts into the yard and couldn’t find it after 20 mins of searching on my hands and knees… I imagine I’ll find it… with the mower… and retrieve it from the living room… after it’s gone through the huge window. #FAIL
Finally, had to use a Dremel to remove some material off of the covers. Yes that’s a duct tape bandaid. That’s what happens when you stab your thumb with a screw driver.

Next project was reconditioning my spray in bedliner. The black was getting pretty faded, with some streaks that were pretty lame, so I researched and decided to try “Forever Black” bedliner dye. It’s a polymer dye gel.

All done!

Ahh yes, got a new pair of work boots today too!

Well that’s a wrap… Going to put my truck box and bull rings in tomorrow after the bedliner dye has fully dried. Picked up a heat gun today too… so maybe tomorrow I’ll de-mold! ;)

Yes, it was a great day. Pretty much dawn till dusk I was doing stuff for ME, which rarely happens   ;D Since it is the rare financial market holiday, where it isn't a bank holiday too, wifey had to work and my team and I had it off.

Got to spend a lot of time thinking as I was tinkering and doing errands, since there was really nobody to talk to, and nobody talkin' at me. Thought a lot about the torture  Christ went through, culminating in death, on that day 2000 odd years ago, for me, for you, for everyone. Praise the Lord.

Shifted gears a bit, didn’t get to de-mold the truck on Sunday, just didn’t feel up to it. Wanted to wait for a warmer day anyhow. Instead I just tinkered around the garage.

First, I loaded up my new grease gun with a tube of Shaeffer’s 274. It's a Lincoln pneumatic. I got this for Christmas, and haven't used it yet, so I figured it was time to get it ready to go.

Next, I gave a little TLC to some of my dad’s lawn equipment. Cleaned them up, degreased the motors and decks, and put a little fresh paint down. First up is the power rake, awesome piece of equipment for de-thatching if you’ve never used one.

Got a little overspray on the driveway, oops. Guess I’ll be powerwashing that sooner than later. I did a terrible job on the wheels too, so I’ll be redoing those.
Next was the tiller. It’s an older unit, but has a new motor. Gets the job done!

Lastly, I got the dump trailer from my dad. Going to put it to work next weekend making a dump run, and then maybe a run of yard waste after thatching and trimming some trees.

Well I finally found some time to get some maintenance done on the truck. I had aspirations of doing everything bow to stern, but I didn’t get everything done. I got the oil changed and the Fumoto valve in, got the Allison drained and refilled with Transynd (and filter change), and the rear diff drained and filled with Mobil 1 Synthetic 75w90. I have to say, I am sold on running Delvac under the hood. I had the really annoying typewriter tick at idle, had it with both Delo and Rotella. After it pressured up with Delvac…. Gone. Delvac is CI-4, not CJ-4 like the new gen diesel oils, maybe that has something to do with it... higher ash content i think, or something. Either way, no more tick, quiet and happy. Oil is super clean too in this truck, clean as my wife’s Acura on the dipstick, not black at all.

Funny story, I think Goliath himself installed the Allison external filter, it took me a good 30 mins to an hour to get it off. Partly because I didn't have a proper fitting band wrench, and the cheap gizmo I bought at NAPA after failing to buy a set of proper filter pliers left me resorting to punishing it with channel locks. It came off, but not without a fight. I was happy to see a general lack of shavings on the magnet though, so that was good news.

Sorry for being light on pics also, it was threatening to rain pretty much the whole time I was rolling around outside, so I was in a hurry.

I still have to do the transfer case, front diff, and fuel filter, as well as grease the front end. All and all, it was a good day. Got a ton of other stuff done too, non truck related.

New tool update: On my way back from the dump this morning, I stopped and picked up a new Jack/Creeper combo I’ve been eyeballing. 95 bucks for a 3 ton jack, 2 jackstands, and a creeper. Not too shabby!

For some reason I expected to see HF stuff there, nice choice.

That tic is common in all dmaxs and even more so just after an oil change. They say it is something in the oil passages and never heard of it causing any issues.

Yup, just do the rub or it will show up, mine did.
Title: Re: Kyle's LBZ Build
Post by: Dawg25385 on April 26, 2015, 02:54:36 PM
I went with Craftsman, as it was cheaper to get the combo, and everything had pretty good reviews. Even the creeper is pretty nice, which you would expect that would be junk in a combo.

I know, my LMM had it and it drove me crazy. The LBZ had it too, but i tell you what... it's gone with Delvac. I'd read that others said Delvac was one of the best to keep the tick at bay, and have to say I concur. I also read it's "normal", and there's a TSB out too. Yes it's harmless, but still annoying!

10-4 on the rub kit. It's on the list of things to do, pretty high up there. When i was rolling around inspecting yesterday I didn't see any evidence of leaks, so that's relieving. I just need to get the house financed and under construction, and then I'll have a couple more shillings to work with and get that taken care of. For now, wife and I are trying to watch spending very closely so we'll have as much as possible in the bank when we go to close financing!  ;)

Got a full day to do 'man stuff' tomorrow... so here's a little teaser of things to come...

June 26
Order wheels/tires
Install New Curt Hitch
Install New Hopkins Trailer Plug
De-Mold

Also if I have time I'm going to go cut a load of firewood from the slash pile up at our property. Some decent sticks of fir and maple already limbed up ready to buck. There's a nice big alder log up there that would make excellent cooking firewood, so I'm going to grab my new Stihl MS291 and the dump trailer and head up there and try to get a nice big load.

Got a lot of stuff done this weekend… and as typically the case, all of it took much longer than I thought!

First, I got new wheels and tires ordered. Ended up going with the Fuel Maverick in 17x9, and the Cooper ATP in 285/70r17. Might have to trim a little plastic, but my wife said 265/70r17 would be “puny”. So should get those on Thursday…
Next I started on the running boards, quickly realized that they were secured with the body bolts… and I was going to need an impact gun… off to Home Depot and picked up their Husky 800 ft/lb model.. not sure if that’s legit, but it got the bolts out! Didn’t break the bank either, so that was good.

Steps off..

Started to sand these up, and spot treat the rust on the brackets…

Then hit with the primer…

I was planning on spraying these with bedliner and putting them back on, but 2 things happened. 1) I kinda like how it looks without the steps, and 2) the primer didn't take real well, so i didn't want to waste 50 bucks worth of bedliner spray on them if it wasn't going to hold up. So i'm in a holding pattern on those.

Next I started on the de-badge, de-mold. The moldings were all faded and shot anyway, so they had to come off. I do like the de-molded look, so it worked out. Getting the moldings off was a piece of cake with some 30 lb test fishing line….

Getting the adhesive off was another story… my fingers are still numb. I have heard the Magic Eraser Wheel works good, but have also heard some people say it took up paint, so I didn’t want to risk it.

Recruited some help from my sister… Guess she felt obligated since I just basically remodeled her whole house LOL

Found a plastic card helped scrape.

Got it all off, just need to use some Goof Off on the glue residue now.

Helped a buddy re-roof a duplex this morning from dawn till around noon, and then got to cut some firewood. The stumping crew at our property did a decent job of sorting the piles, there’s a stump pile, a slash pile, and then this, which has been picked over pretty good already. Lots of rotten stuff in there now, but I got a good pickup load of mixed fir, alder, and maple. First time using my new saw too… definitely has enough power for my needs. Brand new sharp chain helps also!

Here’s how the truck looks de-stepped, de-badged, and de-molded also. Can’t wait for the new wheels and tires to go on and get those grampa wheels off there :D

Doesn't look like much, but that was a whole mounted bed full, stacked, and on the tailgate too.

Didn’t get to install the new Curt hitch unfortunately. Guess it’s good to leave something for next time!

I'm not much on those wheels either, but I do like the cleaner look you have there.

Maybe you should consider selling those side steps to fund a new set of diesel spark plugs or something. Then show up down here for a visit and I'll do you up a set of respectable steps/sliders/side ramming devices w/spare tool cache and aux air tank along with a secret compartment for two extra 30 round mags!

steps/sliders/side ramming devices.... very versatile! probably super lightweight too. think my factory leafs will hold up or should i prepare for a set of overloads as well LOL

new wheels and tires Thursday hopefully! they're on order...

Got my new wheels and tires put on today! Fuel Maverick 17x9 and Cooper ATP 285/70r17. Only minor trimming needed: front valance and front part of the fender liner. Will have to take a heat gun and mold the top of my flaps back a tad, as they rub, but only at full lock.

What do you guys think?? Lookin aight huh?

Yeah, I had intended on using the dump trailer, but I let my buddy borrow it (the one i helped tear off an old composition roof). And it was 90*+ when i was cutting, so truthfully, i tapped out after getting what i could into the bed of the truck. Was just pouring sweat, especially since i was a good boy and wore my Kevlar chaps. The pile is still up there, so i may cut some more, we'll see.

I tell you what..... it is a PAIN. The molding removal was easy, but the adhesive removal is a nightmare. I think it's probably easier on newer trucks where the adhesive is still relatively 'fresh', but I've spent hours with goo gone and goof off and there's still some traces of residue on there. Will probably hit it one more time and then call it good... maybe have it detailed and see if they can get it off with a rubbing compound or something.

ah yes the Grizzly Grease. Like blinker fluid and muffler bearings. Pretty sure D's goofin on ya here. I do have posi additive that smells like whale urine and some high temp, high pressure super joint grease, but I don't think they'll be much help here. I have however used this in my detailing years with a lot of success, along with good old fashioned lacquer thinner. just keep it moving and wipe it dry when you're not moving. http://www.hillas.com/Categories/3M-Automotive-and-Specialty-Vehicle-Cleaners/3M-General-Purpose-Adhesive-Cleaner-08984-1-Quart-US-6-per-case.html?gclid=CjwKEAjwiZitBRCy0pb3rIbG9XwSJACmuvvzj8flkp5kIzYispCXCVtSmH4DQcfTzRYImg-J_LDivRoCk8rw_wcB

Those wheels and tires ran me 2g, mounted and balanced, and with the extra full replacement warranty. Plus i have a $70 mail in rebate coming in the mail. Discount Tire matched an online price i found for the wheels... they are normally $265 a piece at DT, plus lug nuts. I found them online for 218 with free lug nuts and DT matched it.

Good lookin shoes there Kyle. Are those from Uncle Les?

Thank you! Nope, Discount Tire. Schwabs couldn't come close on price... They wouldn't match the online price for the wheels, and the Toyo ATii's were considerably more expensive. And truthfully I had the ATii's on my LMM, and while i loved them 90% of the time, couldn't stand them on gravel. They threw rocks like crazy... I don't like reading these kinds of threads!

Afterward, I wander around my Chebby looking at those 4 year old wheels...

Yea, I could buy a set of tires and wheels too! Just like them!

I have thought too long about wanting some 37's or 38's on the D-Max to cut back that low 4.56 gear I have.

3M eraser wheel is magic, followed by goof off.  I used it with great success on my LML

Welp, think i got an exhaust leak somewhere on the passenger side... I can hear it, and i can smell exhaust when i stick my head down under the fender.

Luckily exhaust manifolds are covered under my warranty if that ends up being what it is... I know the up-pipes are known to crack on these trucks too.

Would love to just upgrade to the PPE manifolds and up-pipes, but that's like 2-3 times as expensive as OEM replacement.

Trying to find a shop that will look at it and diagnose, and hopefully I can get it figured out and if it's covered under warranty, get them to replace the stock down-pipe while they got it apart.

Hoping for the best for you. I have a similar sounding leak and am I terested to hear the results of yours. I kinda forgot (maybe intentionally) about the up pipe thing.

And don't be scared of your down pipe. The LBZ is super easy.

Talked to the service manager of a shop close by that does a lot of diesel work, said he deals with the aftermarket warranties all the time and they're not as bad as people say... so we'll see. Will try and get it in there soon to see whats up. Definitely want to try and take advantage of the warranty if i can.

My LML (2012) had a factory covered service bulletin due to a leak at the turbo - I could smell the lovely DEF smell in the cab.  Have dealer check it out- there are also extended warranty bulletins through GM due to class action type stuff, so ask about that too!

I'm tellin ya, a call to your tuner can probably fix that... Rumble idle is default now pretty much universally across tuners. You can load new/revised tune files onto your H&S right?

In all reality, not much of a chance of me upgrading the manifolds... Not in the budget. Best I can hope for is getting the leaking/cracked stock manifold/up-pipe fixed under warranty, and then upgrading the downpipe and exhaust.

Kyle, depending on the outcome if the downpipe is not now, I put in the Profab one on mine.
Was so easy compared to the newer ones. I did it at somewhere around 100k, just turned out the bolts and out it popped. New one in slick as snot. We have a lot, and I mean inches more room than the LML and LMM.
So if it doesn't happen now, don't fret it, I think I was 30 minutes or so. Had extra hands for allignment, but it was simple. Sorry for the newer guys, the LBZ is that easy.

I'll dig out a picture or snap a new one so you can see the heat shield bolts.
I kept it for some reason.
Not sure if I really needed to take off the heat shield for sure but it did make it easier for sure.
It's a bit if a twisting act to get it out, but we have hundreds of room.

Kyle, when you have time can you take a pic of the clamp.
I've found it and forgot it so many times I'd forgotten I was going to do it.
I know it's simple, just forget the where it is part.

And the clamp is good news for your exhaust leak.
I am afraid mine is the pipe or the gasket.

Took my freebie NAPA bucket and added a lid with a pour spout, and also cut out a hole for a deck plate, and glue/caulk/screwed it in. Then I glue/caulked the lid to the bucket, in addition to the gasket already built into the lid. Should last me awhile...

Need to:
Clean cooling stack and flush radiator
DNR front diff
Change Oil and Fuel Filter
Install new exhaust
Install new Curt hitch..... that's STILL in the box
Install my EGT probe.... that's STILL coiled up under the hood
Install PCV reroute... that's STILL in a box in my garage

You get the drift here... This ole boy ain't got noooo time

Yea, Ken, copy on that

Corporate America is not what you think it is going in

Gets you the nice house in the burbs, a nice, steadily increasing paycheck

New cars, trucks, motorcycles

Lots of stuff

But along with all that stuff...the nice home becomes a big mortgage payment with neighbors who become problems. And the neighborhood has the restrictions....

That corporate job gets you increasing responsibility which you accept because you are a hunter and a provider. But after a time you start to notice distance from the woman you loved so much. Distance born from lives separated by time and different azimuths born of growing in separate careers. And the kids who never see you start to encroach on any personal time you thought you might have had. Giving up every spare minute usually means the exercise/workout time goes away, which brings on that flabby whale look you start to see in the mornings.

Honestly, you can have it! Not worth it. I feel so blessed to have done 30 in the military and mil contractor work. They kept me exercising. They paid me well, they gave me a purpose and let me play with cool toys. On the other end I did not see Little Don grow up except for snap shots. I lost a marriage, which I suppose in my case wasn't all that much anyway, so maybe that was a good thing...??? And my middle life was about my experiences, not shared ones with family.

I'd say to any and all who would listen. Avoid the shiny bait, don't take it if you can avoid. Revel in your time, for it is fleeting...fleeting indeed!

Going through a merger/acquisition, and we've got a deadline. Big one, with big ramifications.

Honestly, I do it for my guys, not the money or the recognition. Well, and because I was raised to always do my best in whatever I do, period. I have a great team, great group of men and women who have bought in and worked their heart out. I owe it to them to see this through, and help them be successful in this challenge! I think many of you could relate to that at least.

Not sure what to make of it other than not right.
I wouldn't think alternator could make that sound, but could be wrong.

Is the fan shroud hitting the fan, or something in that area that shouldn't be?
I'm grasping at straws, but that sounds nasty.
Also does it change with engine RPM?

Seems to go away when not at idle, i.e. under load. I really hope it's something in the serpentine system and not the valve train

I had a tensioner pulley that the bearings went out on once on a 7.3L diesel. Not sure how the belt stayed on even but other than a similar noise the only sign was the alternator light coming on once every so often. Under load it didn't make as much noise. Basically there was no longer a bearing and the head of bolt / washer kept the pulley kinda on but cocked at a weird angle.
Title: Re: Kyle's LBZ Build
Post by: Flyin6 on February 06, 2016, 10:19:07 PM
That sounds like a rocker arm or tappet to me. Possibly an injector. Going out on a limb, I'd put my money on valvetrain.

I wouldn't bet on it being a serpentine belt, but out of curiosity, did you spill any antifreeze on it recently?

Sounds like the clutching bearing on the alternator might have
Seized. When that happens, it doesn't "ratchet" to absorb the belt harmonics.

Post by: JR on February 06, 2016, 11:47:14 PM
Pull the belt to check but you just did an oil change, right?

Very common to the duramax is a click that at first seems to be from the valve train, but it is from the oil system, like a cavatation or bubble. Mine sounds like that almost all the time. Check in a wheel well it will be louder.

Pull the belt the oil and fuel pump runs off the crank/cam anyway.

Otherwise I would agree that it sounds like a tappet or rocker arm.

While it's off you can check idlers, alternator etc for ugly bearings.
If it's still there then it's something inside.

Any update on this?  Otherwise I was going to suggest removing the A/C compressor belt as well when you remove the main belt.  I had the A/C belt tensioner fail and lock up once.

Pretty sure it's the alternator. Going into the shop for that, and some other work, tomorrow. Alternator is covered under my warranty, so I didn't want to mess with it... and I haven't have time frankly.

Going into Plateau Diesel in Enumclaw tomorrow, and they'll have it till next Weds when I get back from California.

Then when that gets all wrapped up, I'll find a day to dedicate to the truck in the garage, and do some maintenance, hang the new exhaust, put the new Curt hitch on, etc.

Only one belt on the dmax....gassers have 2 tho.

Who is your extended warranty through Kyle? Just bought my wife a used Acadia and got the extended warranty plan through Allstate, but now i'm not so sure that I got a good deal...  Haven't even seen the new car in 10 days. Had it for a day then took it to their shop to get some things looked at. Then service told me over the phone that I only have the "bronze plan" and that is power train only, not the B2B that I thought I was getting.

Hmm... I'll have to see if my CU offers that. I likely will not be keeping the Allstate plan if it does not cover what they told me it covers. Feeling like I was bait and switched.

Have to be careful about that, from what i've read... I went back and forth because of that, but our CU told us that the ones they offered were actually pretty good. Guess i'll find out when i submit the bill to them for the alternator (if that's what it ends up  being)

Thanks! I've driven it a few times.... That stretch between Sacramento and Burbank is killer at night... And I'm one of the types that gets real sleepy when driving at night.

Story time... Was cruising down the freeway on that long boring stretch of I-5 on my way down once, in my old Tahoe, think I had the cruise at 90, maybe a smidge over. Dead of night, no lights anywhere. Then WHAM out of nowhere a Highway Patrol is on me, passes me and pulls in front of me in the right lane. Then starts braking to slow me down to about 80, then took off like a rocket. Was pretty cool that he just slowed me down versus stop me, but startled the crap out of me. Literally have no idea where he came from. Might as well have been a UFO at the time haha

I have to say I have been pulled over several times in CA by the CHiPs. They rarely used radar or laser. They would just sneak up behind you and pace you. You would never even know they were there. They are the best at that! It wouldn't surprise me if he caught up to you without his headlights on and then did his move.  8)

Well I heard back from the shop, turns out it was the alternator. So getting a OEM replacement, and it's covered by my warranty too.

While its in there I'm having them clean my cooling stack and service the cooling system as well. Price was good, so glad I don't have to do that.

Got the EGT probe stuck in the pass manifold also.

And... Well I just asked them to install my new downpipe too. Call me lazy if ya want lol.

Once I get it back I will try to find a day soon to do some maintenance and hang the new 4" exhaust, and the new hitch

Not really picture worthy, but I finally got around to tapping into the XM wiring to splice in a headphone jack in my glovebox. Now I can use my phone or iPod for music. Pretty simple mod; few bucks in parts and you're all set. Sounds great too.

Note to anybody considering this... Splice in both the grounds, or for some reason you will lose bass if you only use one ground off the XM module harness. If you splice into both grounds, sounds amazing.

Here's the how to I followed:

Nice job.  I had done that to the 2005 Silverado I had before I sold it.  I agree it worked great as long as you are careful making the connections.  I have not bothered to do that on our newer vehicles though, partly  because I got lazy and partly because I went back to burning a bunch of CD's instead.  I always found that the hard drive space on my phone was too small and it was difficult to use it while driving.  Felt safer just using the normal buttons to control an MP3 CD.  If I had enough data to stream music, it would be totally worth it.

Yeah, I mostly just stream Pandora, but what's extra handy is using the audio bit of GPS guidance coming through the stereo. Radio sucks, it's all commercials anymore, and burning CD's is a pain.

So a few years back wife and I removed the plastic body trim off our 2007 Sierra, in the process I tried nearly every liquid I had in the house. Then along comes the neighbor walking down the street, who low and behold was a mobile detailer and body man.  He said use mineral spirits. The clear stuff. I walked back to his house with him and he meant me a spray bottle, took the sticky stuff right off! Then the next day he took my truck and detailed it for us....

Long story short, try mineral spirits (saying that seems like I might be calling it the wrong thing).

Probably some what hard on the clear coat but I have noticed no lasting damage.

Exhaust is on too. I'm a bit ashamed... For a variety of reasons, I didn't do it myself... Had the truck up on blocks, everything laid out ready to go, and was gonna tear into it, but couldn't get the truck high enough off the ground to feel confident I could finish today. So took it down to an exhaust shop just down the street and then knocked it out in no time, and for cheap.

Man a lift would be nice...

we use 3 2"x8" nailed together to form a ramp to change flat tires on our 175kw generators on the side of the road (pull the good tire on and let the bad hang off [tandem axles]) so.. maybe get some good 6"x6" to make a ramp, or clean rail road ties to pull up on..? pretty simple and fail safe, especially for crawling around under the truck sitting on its own weight

It might, but a real hole saw or jig saw is much better. Tape off the area to protect the chrome and mark the cuts.

I think a jigsaw would be difficult to get in there without removing the bumper.

Even a dremel cut off wheel would probably work.

I think I put that same hitch in mine. Sure a lot more than the stocker.
I salvaged the mount off the old one to put in somewhere when I do my rear bumper.

I don't think you're planning on bumpers, so you'll have to cut carefully so as not to damage the chrome. There is a good chance however that it will show up in the future. Cut with no heat, and treat the edges with some form of rust preventer, and it should hold up for a while.
Title: Re: Kyle's LBZ Build
Post by: Dawg25385 on March 20, 2016, 02:10:47 PM
Yep thats what I'm gonna do. Heat on chrome is a no-go after more reading, esp since I have no plans for aftermarket bumpers.

Invested in a nice new hole saw and a metal specific dremel bit. Should do the trick.

All done. Only had one booboo, and it'll be mostly hidden by my license plate bracket.

Used a 2" hole saw, and then an oscillating saw for the straights. Cleaned up with a dremel diamond tip, then sanded and painted the exposed metal. Used a silicone adhesive when installing the plug, front and back, to seal out water. That will dry clear, it's white in the pics...

Thanks dudes. It looks real good with the license plate back on there too, snugs right up with barely a gap between the plug and the plate bracket.

How i'm trying to figure out what to do with my cheepish Husky truck box.

Option A) Leave it alone
Option B) Take it out, and spray it black with Bedliner
Option C) Sell the chrome one on Craigs, and buy the black Husky one
Option D) Sell the chorme one on Craigs, splurge and get a Camlocker

I vote A, C or D.   I've learned this the hard way.  Cheap tool boxes are cheap.  Very prophetic I know, but true.  I bought a tractor supply chest for one of my trucks years back and after about a year and sliding it into and out of a few trucks it wouldn't even latch anymore.

I would lean toward D. Never seen the the cam locker in person but it's priced like a weather guard or something similar so it should be of good quality.   I skipped the aluminum altogether in the ford and went for a steel chest.  A little heavier but a ton stronger than aluminum.  I chuck 36" pipe wrenches in it from the ground and it scratches the inside but nothing else.

I can't put a dent in it unless I hit it with a sledge I think.

Nice clean mount and it sounds great.

I have passed the wife on the freeway and she said it sounds like a train going by. (no muffler)

No, not really pic worthy, but helpful none the less. thanks for posting this; I was getting ready to burn the whole Bose program and opt for aftermarket until I saw this. Now we have a use for the XM i'll never use. Wife is super happy.

Not quite -- they're still around, albeit a lot fewer stores -- I'm lucky to still have one right up the street.  They're mostly cell phone storefronts for Sprint now.

Yep, I did hear a few would stay around to sell phones. I found RS had so little and were so $$$ I ordered on line for most things anyway.

They are stupid $$$ for most stuff, but for small electrical hardware they are pretty cheap.

Has anyone tried the exhaust clamp instead of a regulate pipe clamp?
I bought a exhaust clamp last night and installed it, going to order a new green plastic thing today

Not much changed on the truck in forever, but with the baby now and a very large puppy... we decided to get a canopy on the truck. I ordered an A.R.E., and it should be here in a couple weeks. And because I had to ditch the tool box, i went ahead and ordered a DECKED storage system. Really excited for that, it's a really cool design. Was thinking of making something out of plywood and skateboard wheels, but wanted to keep weight down so just went ahead and bought the DECKED system. Will be a few weeks before it's all installed, but i'll post pics

Here's a photo of what the DECKED looks like

Only addition I made to my current truck was a diamondback truck cover.

I love this topper, was extremely easy to install & even with the light duty model I regularly haul lumber & other items on top of it.

I'm curious if the weight of the drawer units and taking them in or out as well.

Dave, if you're asking me mine is essentially 3 sections all aluminum. I have the 5.5' bed so the middle section on mine is very narrow & is what gets clamped in place. Front & back lids both flip up & have easily detached gas shocks. So if I need the front or rear open it takes me less than a minute to unlock, detach shocks & flip lid over onto other sections. A simple long bungee holds it in place I have found.

Normally I flip back section forward to take our two Golden retrievers on hikes etc. So far flipping that rear section forward has given me no issues when running down highway 60+.

Being its the light duty version the cover will support 400# & does so easily. I also upgraded to the black protective coating & it seems to be very durable.

The freight guy who delivered my cover on a skid said he personally delivers 5-6 of these per week in the Denver area. I was shocked because I never see another truck with it.

The DECKED system itself weighs about 200 lbs. Its heavy duty plastic with steel structure. Each drawer can hold 200 lbs. the deck can support 1 ton.

And once assembled, one guy can probably remove and reinstall. It comes out in 2 halves after the drawers are removed. It’s designed to anchor to the factory tie downs in each corner with turnbuckles

Well, as usual, nothing can really go right for me on purchases like this.

About 2 months ago I got my A.R.E. Canopy installed. Immediately I was pissed. It was poorly made, with flaws and poor moldings where it sits on the bed. And, the color was off. They said they’d order a replacement, and let me use the flawed one till it arrived.

So a month goes by and I call back. “Oh, yeah, we forgot to email you. They’re not going to warranty that”. So I said fine, I’ll be down in the morning and you can take this POS off and give me my money back in full.

So once I had that taken care of, I drove up to the Leer dealer and ordered a topper. It will be installed next Wednesday. I have a loaner on there until then.

Now for the good news. The DECKED system is awesome, I love it. Really easy to install, and the fit and finish is top notch. Highly recommend to anybody looking for storage options with a canopy.

That decked system is nice. I have so much stuff in mine I built a shelf so I get good use from the slider.

My shell is a Snugtop. It was more than all the others but when I asked the diff it was obvious. The others were all flimsy.

Attaches with 6 "J" plates and nothing sticks out. Much stiffer and a solid fit. Paint it dead on to. I will say the flip down window leaked and the latches wore out, but not their product. The rear flip out windows rub a tad when closed is about the worst. I also got the rails installed for rack on top and love them. This also gives you something to mount things on the inside.

I wish I had the room to use drawers like that. I would use it all!

New Leer topper installed today. Way better fit and finish than the A.R.E. POS that I got the first go ‘round.

That is a nice set up. I’ve seen these that just about took up the whole bed so I didn’t look twice. This one offers a little more room elevation wise. I bet it’s stout enough to put a 4wheeler on top too. Very nice!  I would love to have that bed top too.  Pulling goosenecks don’t really work with that though. Great looking truck!
