Everything Trailer, Camper, or RV related / Trailer brake parts
« on: September 20, 2022, 06:29:23 AM »
Where do you guys get your trailer brake parts. I need new drums and brakes for our scout trailer. The drums have some pretty good grooves worn in them and the brakes are covered in grease where the seals failed. The local trailer place wants twice the price of what I can find online. $230 per drum and over $100 per brake kit. They are 8 lug 12 inch hubs for a 12,000 lb trailer.

Everything Trailer, Camper, or RV related / Battery box redo.
« on: February 24, 2022, 06:00:26 AM »
Last summer I upgraded batteries from lead acid to AGM. I got them used from a friend that upgraded to lithium. We swapped them out in the campground out in Idaho. They are used but have a couple years left in them. They are mismatched but they are the same size and style. one is a year older than the other. I basically paid core price. When these are done I will go to lithium.
When we did the swap we basically just threw it all together. I bought an inverter from another guy that had upgraded his to a bigger one. We had no fuses or anything. It meant to be temporary.
The battery box in these campers are so flimsy frankly I am amazed I made it home. These batteries are so heavy I can't pick one up myself.  The floor pan is just tack welded in with 2 bolts that are only there for the spare tire carrier. One tack weld is burned through and holds nothing. I drilled a few holes and added some bolts.
For the bottom I used 2 2x8 boards full length. They sit on the actual frame on both sides. Then I ripped a 1x10 in half and put that on the back  and front side to add rigidity. I have boards screwed down around each battery to keep them from sliding around.
I used scrap from the 2x8 to make a switch panel to install the fuse link and kill switch.
The inverter is a Xantrex freedom 1800. It is actually an inverter charger mounted to the ceiling in the luggage compartment. It will be used to run a second fridge and I want to hook it into a couple outlets in the camper itself.
To connect it all together I used the blue sea systems kill switch, Xantrex 300 amp fuse holder and a Victron smart shunt. 4/0 welding cable all around. It's not quite done. I should button it up by the end of the day today.
I took a chance on a cheap Chinese hydraulic crimper to make the cables. So far so good.

Firearms / .22 caliber air rifle
« on: February 21, 2021, 05:12:48 PM »
I have kind of wanted a .22 air rifle for a while. We have several daisy and Red Rider bb guns. While they are fun and all with ammo shortages I was thinking  more seriously about a the .22 caliber air rifles. You can take down small game with these pretty easily. Squirrels and rabbits and such. Heck use to kill squirrels with a blow gun when we were kids. (town squirrels are easier to sneak up on than country squirrels)
Actually I was walking through a store up in Sioux Falls wasting time wasting for Zane's basketball game to start and I ran across one. I do not remember the brand but it was very similar to the one in the link. On sale for $165. I told the wife were coming back in the morning and getting this. Well it was snowing pretty had so we split and went home. This gave me a little more time to do some research.
I am wanting to order this bad boy right here. I was wondering if any of you had any experience with these at all. https://gamousa.com/product/swarm-maxxim-10x-gen-2-22-caliber-10-shot-break-barrel-air-rifle/

Canning & Food Storage / Store bought freeze dried foods
« on: January 21, 2021, 07:07:27 AM »
On our winter campout a few weeks ago, Zane and I were trying to make hot dogs. I look over and see this guy is pouring hot water in a bag and shaking it up.  I look again a few minutes later he's eating mac and cheese. Hes done eating before we even organized.
Ive been looking at freeze dried foods for a while. I did some trading and got an assortment from the fellow I mentioned above. I took them home and tried them.  I have talked it over with the wife and its time to get some. For storage and for use on our camping trips. There are so many different companies out there. Patriot, Ready Wise, Essentials, Legacy and so on. I dont know where to start.
Aside from buying my own freeze dryer where do you get the best bang for your buck? I will pay more for quality over quantity.

Most Favored Companies / health insurance
« on: October 29, 2020, 06:43:10 AM »
Had a meeting with the bean counter. They think we are spending too much on health insurance. He right. Its expensive. Suggested we look at Obama care. We have 100% employer paid blue cross blue shield with a Health savings account. He claims that Obama care with will save us $60,000 a year. I told him to look into it. I want the same coverage and I dont want to lose my HSA. We have a few weeks to decide.

I was wondering what companies you guys use and if you like them. I am not wanting Obama care. Last time we looked into it we would lose the HSA

Bug-Out Bag and Camping gear / Cold weather camping on a budget
« on: September 10, 2020, 09:48:17 PM »
I am looking ahead to January. There is a winter campout the Nebraska preparedness group goes on every year. I went last year, its basically Scout camp for adults. Last year I took my camper because if they all turned out to be a bunch of weirdos I could turn a key and leave quickly at any time. Long story short I made a few friends that I kept in contact with through the year. This time I am bringing my son and a tent.

I dont have a North Face or Cabela's budget. We are Ozark Trail people. I dont know what I am going to do for a tent yet. I have a Ozark trail teepee tent that I though would be cool but it sucks. I hate it. My other tents are plum wore out from years of use and abuse. I dont know why I even keep them around.
I have some ideas for sleeping pads. Some sleeping pads get pretty pricey. Remember, I have to buy gear for myself and my son so the price doubles.

Imagine you are making a double bed on the ground. I am looking at getting a couple of these military surplus self inflating sleeping mats https://colemans.com/u-s-g-i-self-inflating-sleeping-mat
Or a couple of these Therm a rest pads  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004532G9Q/ref=twister_B07F36CSK8?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I would put the pads on the bottom. Then a quilt from home and/or the two wool blankets my Uncle brought home from the Coast Guard. Then some reflective insulation. Then sleeping bags and over the bags another good heavy quilt if needed.   https://www.menards.com/main/building-materials/insulation/radiant-barrier/reflectix-r-3-7-reflective-insulation-24-x-25/bp24025/p-1444452049106-c-5778.htm

I have never tired a mummy bag I really dont think I would like one. I have had a 0 degree Coleman bag as a teenager in Boy Scouts. I think thats what I am going to get again. They run about a $100 a piece. That is for a big and tall size. At 6 ft I bottom out most cheaper bags and leave my shoulders uncovered.

So that puts me up to $80 or so for pads, $200 for bags. The reflective insulation it is $25. I can count Zane's bag as a Christmas gift so that helps. I am going to get him an adult bag because hes 10. In a few years he will need one anyway.

We already have adequate foot wear, sleepwear and coats and such. So, that just leaves shelter. I am looking at nothing smaller than a 6 person tent. I have another boy that will be going with as soon as hes a little older. 3 people and your gear will fill a 6 person tent real quick. I have no preference over cabin tent vs dome tent. I have had both and like each one equally.

All this shopping just makes me want to take my ratty old cabin tent full of holes. Throw a tarp over top and grab 6 quilts from the house and call it good.

Tech/Electronics / Wireless HDMI transmitter
« on: May 17, 2020, 08:19:00 AM »
I need suggestions on a good wireless HDMI transmitter and receiver. I want to get my Dish network in the bedroom of the camper. The unit is wired up with coax cable but the new Dish box is HDMI.
We also take the tv outside for football games and such. So I need to get the signal out there also.
On my old camper I just ran a HDMI cable to the bedroom and for outside tv I just drilled a hole and ran the cable out. Not an option here.

Medical Corner / First aid kits
« on: March 30, 2020, 07:36:08 AM »
I am wanting to get a couple first aid kits to keep in the tractor and service truck when we are out in the field. I am having trouble finding one with everything in it I want. We have had a couple close called in the past. We need to be ready if something happens.

Along with the typical items found a pre-made first aid kit I want these items.  Eye wash, tourniquet and a splint.

I was thinking a splint like this. https://www.amazon.com/Ever-Ready-First-Aid-Universal/dp/B07N7R11SR/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=splint&qid=1585567889&sr=8-2

Most Favored Companies / North 40 Premium Beef
« on: December 14, 2019, 08:09:54 AM »
My neighbor is co-founder of this company. He is a very hard working young man. He and his partner built this themselves. He didn't have daddy's money to help. As a matter of fact his dad works for him. Logan started out with one Black Angus heifer when he was in 4-H. He built his Angus heard up all through High School. Then he changed over to Wagyu abut half way through collage. When I asked him why he changed breeds he said everyone has Angus. I cant compete with the big feed lots. I found a niche market and I want to fill that. He partnered up with another guy that over sees the quality control and marketing.

All the meat on this web site is bred and born a mile from me here in Nebraska. Shortly after they are weaned they come over to our feed lot for about a year before being finished at another facility. We have a very modern facility here. The cattle have free choice to be inside a barn or go out if they wish. We replace bedding in the barn as needed to insure they are as comfortable as possible. No growth hormones and very selective antibiotic use.

Give the web site a look. I personally guarantee it will be some of the best beef you ever tasted.

Everything Trailer, Camper, or RV related / Toter Build 2
« on: December 04, 2019, 06:41:21 AM »
Its time to add some windows in the sleeper. Kids cant see out. They missed a lot of beautiful country on our trip out to the West Coast Rally in Idaho.

I called Vander Haag's in Sioux Falls all they have is 2 right hand windows. After some discussion and looking at several pictures it was agreed that both right and left are interchangeable. So, I ordered 2 right hand Freightliner sleeper windows. They are just going to cut the window out and give me a chunk of the sleeper. So when I remove it I will know how it all goes back together.  I fully intend on doing this myself. However I have a friend that does body work on semi trucks. It might end up going to him. My budget is no budget. The more money I spend on this the less we have to spend on our trip coming up this summer. I am going to have to take my time and do it right.

I pick the windows up on Saturday. I wont be starting this project until after the first of the year. That gives me time to decide am I doing it myself or taking it in. I was told by the body shop that the stiffeners should already be in the wall of the sleeper. Its a matter of cutting the hole and and getting everything lined up.  I have to peel back the interior and see if in fact they are there. If I have to wield in pieces to stiffen it up I will be taking it in for sure because I don't have an aluminum welder.

This is one of the windows I have ordered.

Everything Trailer, Camper, or RV related / Lease site for camping
« on: April 06, 2019, 09:11:47 AM »
We looked at a lease site so we don't have to fight to get in the state parks. These sites were dirt. Actually clay. Did not drain very well. After the flood came through now they are all sand. 6 to 8 inches of sand to be exact. Took care of the mud problem but now we have all sand. Not a big deal except we have two boys ages 5 and 8. Everyone with kids knows exactly where this is headed.

This is the first year the place is open. Sites are just roughed in at this point. Actually there are no hookups yet. I am equipped to boondock so no problem.  I just need ideas of something to put down outside the camper as a "clean area"  A place to knock the sand off and clean up before going in the camper.  Future plans are to have a patio but I don't want to build anything until all the utility's are in. I have looked at the rv rugs that let the sand go through are so expensive but that might have to be the way we go. Do they actually work? I don't know anyone that has one. I will be setting up an outdoor shower. That is a must have.

There is a huge negative not having grass but..With the flooding in Nebraska most parks in my area are going to be limited access or closed all together. Also we are getting in on the ground floor so to speak. If I pass it up this year I'm afraid it will fill up and I will never get in later. Its only 12 miles from home. The price is VERY reasonable $1,200 a year with power included once they get it ran. The main box is in they just have to run it to each site. We love to cat fish and get in the canoes.  We are just going to have to deal with the sand.  Each site is roughly 50x100. Everyone has river access. The pictures are taken from the spot I was thinking about getting. The spots run north and south. Pictures are taken facing west then east. My Dad is getting a spot right next to me so we will essentially have 100x100 to work with.

Everything Trailer, Camper, or RV related / BAL spare tire carrier
« on: March 05, 2019, 06:50:30 AM »
I bought this off of Amazon. Having never seen one before I went strictly off the reviews and comments. It fit really good. I had to drill the hole for the keeper a little bigger. When I hung it up it hit the heads of the bolts. That made the hole off by just a hair.

I thought it was a little flimsy at first. But once I got it installed I have no doubt it work just fine. Actually I think I'm going to throw a second tire on there. I don't have another rim but it would be nice to have a backup for the backup since I have one laying around anyway.

Tip of the Day! / Anti freeze colors
« on: November 18, 2018, 11:25:50 AM »
This might get a little windy but all these colors are a bit confusing. I would like to clear the water so to speak. I am partly color blind so that just adds to the confusion.

We have a small fleet of trucks and a bunch of equipment old and new. It seems like they all take a different antifreeze. We had yellow, purple and red. Accidentally bought a case of pink once. I had a Mack at the time so I called Mack. Their oil and coolant supplier had just been there and informed the shop that that all colored is the same. As long as it says EXTENDED LIFE. You can put red in purple and pink it don't matter but it MUST say EXTENDED LIFE. Over the past couple years I asked a couple different mechanics the same question expecting conflicting answers. They all backed up the story I got from Mack.

OK fine. So we bought a 55 gallon drum of red for the new stuff and a drum of green for the old. This has been working out for us very well for the past few years. Until now. We are out of green so I had the boss order another drum. We purchase lubricants and coolant through Cenex CO-OP. They can't get green anymore. Its yellow. But not extended life yellow. This yellow is compatible with green and the orange Dex-cool only. Are you confused yet? Isn't Dex Cool extended life? I thought it was.  Anyway so, now in our shop, yellow is the new green. The fun does not stop there. Not when you throw John Deere in the mix. We have 2 pieces of equipment under warranty. We must use the exact fluids that Deere says to use or risk not being covered by warranty. Guess what color the coolant is. Yellow. But not the new new yellow, its the old new extended life yellow. These 2 yellows are not compatible.

The moral of the story here is make darn shure you know exactly what coolant your vehicle has in it. Take a paint pen and write it down under the hood. Read your labels before purchasing coolant.  I have a feeling this "new yellow" will be popping up around stores before long if not already. Although I seriously doubt you will find any John Deere extend life yellow coolant in any vehicles. Thank goodness you can avoid that confusion. Just remember, extended life goes with extended life.

So earlier this spring my buddy and I are sitting around in his garage drinking beer and got some pork bellies on the smoker. We get to talking about how the goat and sheep market is starting to boom around here with all the new immigrants moving in. Neither of us had ever eaten goat before so we decided (against my wife's better judgement) to go buy a goat and fatten him up. Problem was he had a name before we got home. So now Bob is our pet. He is castrated so he's no good to breed. Hes just there. All alone.

A couple months go by and this other friend of mine has this young sheep. I see on Facebook she looking to get rid of her. I shoot her a message. She says $50 and I will have the kid drop her off.  Within a couple hours her son is here with a trailer. I didn't tell my wife until he got there that I bought Bob a friend. She was not thrilled but OK because our beloved Bob has someone to play with.

Tulip the sheep is of breeding age now so I thought if I'm going to breed 1 I just as well have 2. I loaded up the family yesterday and wet to the exotic animal auction. I passed up a couple real nice young sheep but ended up with a nice older ewe already bread and ready to pop for $75. I threw some bedding down in the trailer and off we go. It was dark when we got home last night so I left her in the trailer. I didn't want her in a new place in the dark. She already had a stressful day. Got her some grain and water. As I am sitting here typing this I am waiting for the sun to come up so I can check on her and get her put away.

The only thing I know about sheep is they give wool and say Baa. Looking at the paperwork last night it turns out I bought a different breed of sheep. This one is a Katahdin sheep. I guess you don't have to sheer these. They are only raised for meat. Tulip is a Hampshire. The typical white body black face type sheep you think of when someone says sheep.

We will see how this plays out. New mamma is really big. She has at least 2 in her if not triplets. I have a decent barn but its not real big. If it don't work out sharing a barn with Bob and Tulip I will evict the ducks and she can have their house.

This is Bob and Tulip. Don't have any pics of the new girl yet. Nor does she have a name. I'm thinking Hetty. From NCIS Los Angles. Shes a spunky old girl.

Share Your Recipe / Chicken stock
« on: August 19, 2018, 10:09:23 AM »
My plans for the day got cancelled so I'm going to make stock. When we cut up a chicken to fry I always keep the carcass. This is what I make stock out of. I don't have a written down recipe. I will post each step as I go.
Ideally the carcass should be thawed at room temperature. Being I'm doing this last minute they are still frozen. Not a big deal. Just takes longer to boil.

Step one get a big pot.
Put carcass in the pot and fill with water. I have 5 carcasses in this pot
Throw in a few bay leaves and salt and pepper to taste.

Cooking equipment / Air fryer
« on: July 22, 2018, 02:47:16 PM »
My wife has been wanting a air fryer for a while now. I caved and got one for her for Christmas. She used it for fries and stuff like that. Was not overly impressed.
Today I decided to try frying chicken in it. No breading just salt and pepper and some Lowrey seasoned salt. I have to say it turned out pretty darn good. Now it's time to experiment with more foods. I would call it a good investment over all. We were just not using it to its full potential at first.
I would have a picture of the chicken but it's already gone.

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / Bridge reamer.
« on: April 11, 2018, 06:29:12 AM »
I found the most amazing little reamer. I didn't know these even existed! I was doing research on beds for my truck build and ran across them on accident. Large holes are hard to drill by hand and I can't get the mag drill in everywhere. All I had to do was drill an 1/4 hole then get the 3/4 inch reamer. Within about 30 seconds I had a 3/4 hole.

I bought an assortment. 9/16, 11/19, and 3/4. They are pricey. The biggest one was like 80 bucks. In my opinion they are worth it. Sometimes holes don't line up right so I always tried to ream it out with a drill bit. Always got caught. Snap your wrist. Bust a bit. No more of that.

The bad thing is they will heat up a drill in a hurry. I can't use it in a cordless Milwaukee drill. They must have a safety built in so they don't burn up. I had to put it in the old Dewalt. That baby was HOT after 1 hole.

This is similar to what I got  except with flat spots on the shank, so it won't spin in the drill.

My brother added me to a new group on Facebook called makin' bacon. So off to costco I go to get a pork belly. A buddy of mine brought over a pork loin for Canadian bacon. The recipe we used is in the pictures. The pictures of the loin is after 24 hours. The first flip. We will use an electric smoker the first time just because its more dummy proof. That and its cold out right now. I dont want to have to babysit the fire constantly. Its going in the smoker in 8 more days.

Everything Trailer, Camper, or RV related / Toter-home build.
« on: January 30, 2018, 07:37:00 AM »
I didn't know If I should put this in the build thread or with the campers. Being its going to be pulling a camper i put it here.

This is an 03 Freightliner with 435 hp 60 series Detroit, 10 speed, 3:55 gears with full locker. 260 inch wheel base. A little longer than what I wanted but the hard work is all done. Everything on the rear end is new. From the locker to the bakes, brake cans, shocks, track bar the works. New drive line, carrier bearing U joints etc. I tried to nit pick it but I couldn't find anything wrong. 1.3 million on it. Never been overhauled but they pulled the pan and did the rods and mains. Everything around the engine is new or newer. Alternator and turbo are newer. Needs a right side windshield. That about the only thing I could find wrong. 2 100 gallon fuel tanks. The former owner said he got 7 mpg with it pulling a semi trailer. I should get a little more than that. I should be able to go a 1000 miles easy with fuel to spare.

First things first I have to get it registered as a Motor home. Ive talked to other guys in Nebraska. One guy had to go full out and put in fridge, microwave, sink and some other stuff before they would change the title. The other guy said he just went to the DMV and told them he needed the title changed. They did it no questions asked. I am going to try that approach. If I have to I'm just going to mount a pickup box camper on the back temporally to get past the plating. Once its plated its a done deal. As long as I never ever use it for commercial. It will be recreational use only or they can pull my plate.

I have an 8 foot flat bed to install. Off of a Chevy dually pickup. That will come to just in front of the fenders. I think. Have more measuring to do. Right now everything is stuck in a snow bank. If its not in the snow its frozen to the ground.

Right now I am in full debate with myself over what hitch to install. Its like a multiple choice quiz. A. B. or C. I know C is wrong and A and B are both right. But which one is MORE right.

The trailer saver hitch rides on air. Low profile.
http://www.trailersaver.com/product/tslb2h-air-ride-hitch/

    32,000 lb. Gross Trailer Weight
5,000 lb. Pin Weight with optional 3rd air-bag for a 7,500 lb. pin weight
Fits Standard Bolt Hole patterns in medium duty trucks
    Available rail adapter kit
Heavy Duty 4-way pivoting hitch head with safety lock
    Available Goose-Neck Adapter
Shipped Direct (or to shipping facility near you) Fully Assembled
    3 Year Limited Warranty
    30 Day Money Back Guarantee

Then we have the  comfort ride. No air needed. It rides on these plastic cells.

http://www.comfortridehitch.com/hi_model_308_hd.html

Tunable for any Weight Trailer up to 30K with Height Adjustments from 12" to 19"

   Only Weighs 290 lbs

   30,000 lbs Towing Capacity

   8,000 lbs Pin Capacity

   Operating Height: 11.5"-19" Adjustable

They are very similar in price and weight rating. They both bolt flat so they are easy to install. I'm not crazy about the air ride because air bags eventually blow. But they have a goose neck ball adapter.

Comfort does not have a ball adapter. How often am I going to pull the goose neck? I don't know. But I want the adapter. So before too long I'm just going to flip a coin and order a hitch.

Some day I would like to move the rear end ahead and install a western hauler type bed to haul a jeep on. I have to raise my kids first and I have to pay for all this....Baby steps.

I was wondering if anyone had experience with theses. I know it's harbor freight and my personal rule is never  buy things from there with moving parts.
It's something I'm going to use 3 or 4 times a year. I just can't justify paying over 2 grand for a Honda.
I spoke to the camper dealer and he added up everything in my camper. He said I needed atleast 4000 running watts to run everything.

I have all my kids coming home for the first time in several years.  Tomorrow we go to my Moms house. It will pretty much just be adults and my 2 youngest kids and my 2 young nieces. Day after Christmas we head for Kentucky for a week with a stop off in Cincinnati. I enjoy my time there but I could do without going through that city.

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Girls in boy scouts
« on: October 12, 2017, 08:17:35 AM »
Girl scouts is a cookie selling scam anyway. They don't do anything . I can't say I know one girl that stayed in past grade school but I do know girls that would have loved to do the things the boy scouts did.
They just said on the news that there would be separate troops for boys and girls. I'm unsure if I support this or not. One thing for sure if the girl scouts can't do what the girls want the isn't up to us the men to pick up the slack? Teach the girls what they want to know? Idk. Just my morning pre coffee ramblings.

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / Help identify this wood chipper
« on: October 01, 2017, 05:33:35 PM »
A buddy bought this wood chopper second hand. He said it was dull and blades needed sharpening. He brought it by and we noticed it was missing a blade. There is no name on the unit. No plate. No serial number. No nothing. No idea what brand or where it came from. He bought it off Facebook from an old widow who had no information about it.
We just need a blade. Nobody around here has any. Machine shop said they can make one but it will be a few weeks.

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Wells Fargo getting desperate?
« on: August 26, 2017, 09:49:43 AM »
Back in 99 or so Wells Fargo bought out one our local small town banks. We liked that bank but once Wells Fargo took over it just went down hill. If I was short I could call the bank and say hey I got a bill is due and I'm short until Friday. Hold my check. No problem. They actually helped people. Wells Fargo was just in for the money. We got fees up the wazoo. So we moved to the bank down the street. Everything went back to busness as normal.

Fast forward to just recently when Wells Fargo got busted for all the fake accounts and other crap they were doing. That just confirmed what I already knew. They were crooks.

So the other day I seen a strange vehicle with Texas plates on the place. I went to the office to see whats going on. It was the head guy at our local Wells Fargo branch and what I suppose was one of his bosses. They were going around to all the farmers seeing if we wanted to borrow money. I literally laughed out loud and said yep they got all them fines to pay! Getting desperate!

Real Man Knowledge base / Canned soup on kids school supply list
« on: July 25, 2017, 02:13:56 PM »
Got the new updated school supply list. They added that every child should have 2 cans of soup. We thought maybe the school website was hacked or it was a joke. My wife emaled the school and this was the reply.

Why soup?  GREAT question!! Recent school safety training incorporates a Run, Fight, Hide protocol for responding to violent intruders in the building.  If a student is unable to run or hide a  recommended method for distracting a violent intruder is throwing something at them... thus the two cans of soup (which will be stored in each students desk).   Please let us know if you have any other questions!

There is nothing funny about a school intruder but Can you imagine someone bursting in a room only to be pummled with 30 cans of soup?  I've never been hit with a can of soup but I've dropped a few on my foot. It hurts bad. I'd say that would be a pretty good deterrent. I would have never thought of that.

Any other parents heard of this?

I also thought some of you without children may find this interesting.

General Vehicle Related Discussion / Did something really stupid.
« on: July 23, 2017, 04:50:38 PM »
Just got my pickup out of the shop. 07 2500hd duramax. Turbo was bad. So I got a new one plus 4 in exaust egr blocker and 65 hp single tune.
We took off Friday for a camping trip 250 miles away. It thought it would be good test for it. I weigh 17,000 and change fully loaded. On the way out it drove great. No problems. Tranny temp on 200 coolant temp sitting on 210. Completly normal temps for my truck when towing.
I got up there to the campground and its all uneven and gravel pad. So I get my blocks out to back one side of the camper up on. I spun out in the gravel so I put it in 4x4. Unhooked, parked the truck, got a beer and went fishing. Mind you it's HOT. High 90s heat index in the 100s.

This morning we pack up and hook up. Its high 80s. 15 mph winds. Truck was doing really good u till about 50 miles from home. Trans temp got up to 250 engine temp about 225 and it just didn't seem right. I got to a truck stop 10 miles from home and let her cool down. Got home and unhooked. Took it for a drive just to cool it down. Everything seemed fine.

Then I seen that I never took it out of 4X4 on Friday when I was in such a hurry to get set up. I never noticed it all the way home. I got it cooled down. Checked the tranny fluid. It don't smell burned so I think I'm ok. I'm going to check everything in the morning when its cold. No warning lights came on. I just changed the tranny fluid not even 5,000 miles ago.

This is just the first page. The 50% off catalog is on top.

Why would they send 2 differant people 2 differant books? If my boss ordered the same things I did he would be paying more.
I will not be ordering anything from them anymore.

D.O.T. / Selling the barn
« on: December 14, 2016, 07:50:00 AM »
I was wondering if anyone here ever bought or sold a barn for the wood. There is a barn on My wifes property in Kentucky that's not good for much. I often thought of selling it for the wood. Ive see a lot of barns in the part of the country disappear. The ground was always leveled out who eve did it did a good job. Except for a couple skeletons. I did looking around on Craigslist last time I was down there someone had a post about don't sell your barn to this company. They take what they want and leave. I didn't pay any attention to it because I hadn't convinced my wife that it should go. Her grandpa built it. its sentimental so I dropped it.

Mother in Law called yesterday someone wants to buy the barn. Now she all  hey if we sell the barn we can put a roof on the house. Pay some bills. Im fine with it. I just don't know what its worth. Its a 40x40 about. Kinda falling down. If i lived there I could save it. I would save it because I would need it. Before her dad died he put a bunch of new lumber in it. Built a loft. Hand built new doors. There is a bunch of rough cut 2x6 or 2x8 in there and new floor in the loft.

I just have to wait and see if they call.

I know a lot of guys on here were in or are still members of the military. I never see anything about you being members of VFW or American Legion. (Unless I missed it. That is very possible.)Many posts are consolidating because so many member are elderly and dieing off. I think that's sad. Can't stop them from dieing but there are no new members.
I grew up attending many VFW/American Legion events with my grandparents. I do remember as a kid in the 70s some VFW post didnt allow Vietnam vets in. Police action. Not a war. Eventually they came around and let them in.
I do know a few Desert Storm and one guy that served in Somalia that joined up. It just seems like the next generation is not interested.
I have a great deal of respect for our military men and women. I regret not joining the service. There's nothing I can do about that now except encurage thoes of you who did join the VFW or the Legion. After all when the old guys are gone who is going to carry the flag in parades? Who is going to begin the color guard at your funeral?

This is my grandpa

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Scary thought
« on: August 13, 2016, 09:27:37 PM »
Copy and pasted off an email I got the other day.

A Scary Thought

I had to take my vehicle to the mechanic the other day for service. The Service Manager, Pete, gave me a ride home and on the way he told me his theory about the upcoming election and the next four years of U.S. government.
At first I thought it a bit far fetched. But as I listened to him it began to make sense, scary sense...
“I believe that Hillary Clinton will win the election in November,” Pete began. “Then, sometime between November and January, Hillary will be indicted. The IRS is now investigating the Clinton Foundation and the whole e-mail thing isn’t over yet.”
“Once under indictment she won’t be able to assume the Office of the President in January. Tim Kaine, who will not actually be the Vice President because neither he nor Hillary have been inaugurated, cannot assume the Presidency.”
“The Speaker of the House can’t move up to it because there is already a sitting President and Vice President. So President Obama, in an Executive Order citing “emergency situation,” gives himself another four years in office is the only way possible.”
Pete believes Obama has been planning this for a while now, knowing he has enough on Hillary to indict her. Had the Attorney General indicted her based on evidence from the FBI this plan wouldn’t have worked because the DNC would have quickly come up with another candidate
If you think about it, it’s not that outrageous. Many people on the left, including the President, want Obama to stay another four years. The law prohibits him from being re-elected so the only ways he can do it is by declaring martial law and suspending the election (which would be a very negative thing for the country) or to declare himself still President because the elected candidate cannot assume her duties.
The latter makes more sense and is actually more feasible. And since it’s never been done before, it would set a precedent that would be difficult to challenge.
Of course, if Trump wins the election none of this is going to happen. But what if Pete is correct? Four more years of Obama and a mostly useless Republican House and Senate would give Obama the time he needs to continue destroying changing the country to fit his stated goals.
I thanked Pete for the ride home – and for messing up my day. Now I’ve got more things to worry about!

Parenting / Adult child moved back home
« on: April 12, 2016, 07:47:31 AM »
I got a call from my mother the other day. She said I think your kid is bored. I said I suppose so. Hes lived in your basement with no job no money and no car for over a year. She asked if we needed help on the farm. I said yea we do. She said well come get him and put him to work.

Ive asked the kid to work twice before its always no in don't need the money. Or im busy I have plans. This time he said yea. I almost pooped myself when he said that.  Hes 19 been mooching off grandma for so long I couldn't believe it. Turns out most of the people he runs with are in jail. He just got lucky he didn't get caught. Dealing drugs. Pot mostly from what I gather.

First day was yesterday. Everything went well. He even got up on time. I hope he keeps it up. Hes already looking at cheap cars to buy and has a good attitude.

I am making him pitch in for groceries. 75 a week. Then I thought that was too much we talked about it and he offered 45. Mom  is all bent out of shape about it. My brothers said they would charge him. I see it this way. He is an adult. He can help out. I got my nuts cut because I cant afford another kid. Much less another kid that eats as much as I do.

Am I wrong about that?

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Started a new venture
« on: March 12, 2016, 08:25:14 AM »
We don't have any livestock anymore.  The cattle prices are crazy so we got out of that for now. The hog sheds were all in disrepair. Needed all new gates and fence. SO when the place where we got our little pigs closed we quit. Tore down the buildings.  With grain prices the way they are in the dumper and tons of spare time  My brother and I persuaded the boss to buy some trucks and side dump trailers. Got to work and bring some income. At least earn our wages.

We went out and got 2 brand new side dump trailers. Then we went truck shopping. My brother got a 93 Kenworth. Heavy haul set up. Day cab. 2 speed rears. 425 horse 3406 mechanical Cat 18 speed. Straight from California. Good clean truck.

I found a 06 mack vision. 460 mack engine and 13 speed. Little rough but it has 870,000 miles. rebuilt engine and trans.

Both trucks went through the shop and Sioux City Kenworth and are good to go!

We been hauling for a few days and I noticed that the Mack likes to sway a little bit. Talked to the mechanic. He said its got brand new tires they can do that sometimes. Then I noticed the brakes were getting bad. I should have seen that before we bought it. Thats on me.
In the process of doing the brakes my brother seen the crack. In the frame. Then we found 3 more. Over a foot long over each spring shackle. Then 2 broken cross-members. The dealer had painted the frame with a nice shiny thick black paint that hid the cracks. I was pissed. I called the sales man right away. He was a little pissed himself but no help. Now I get to spend my Saturday in the shop tearing apart a truck.

Pics to follow IF I can get my phone to work.

Every time I get my fishing poles out of the cubby hole they are all tangled up with the chairs.  Sometimes a hook comes loose I grab a chair and a bundle of poles come with it. Irritating. This can also be used for outdoor carpet, sewer hose, and whatever fits.

I came up with this. Ive seen it done on rear bumpers but never underneath. I couldn't do it on the bumper because the spare tire was in the way.
Its 8 ft long 6 inch PVC sewer pipe. I slide a pole in from either end. I wanted the screw on caps but they cost twice as much and I'm on a tight budget. I'm not sure how long them little bungee cords will last. They were all I had at this time. By the end of summer I bet I will be replacing them with rubber tarp straps.
I used ready strap and self drilling 1/4 inch screws to secure it in 4 places to the frame. I called a plumber friend of mine and asked him about it. He said that stuff is way stronger than it looks.  I guess we will find out.

I got tired of the tube TV and the converter boxes. Yea I got the tube TVs free and I am kinda tight but Ive had enough. Trying to hook the dvd player up for the kids. Then trying to hook up the antenna later. then you gotta find the right source and channel. I get frustrated and have to have the wife do it. She came home the other day to find the TV in the driveway and I'm sitting inside in silence. She said WTF happened here. I said we are getting new TVs.

Picked this up yesterday for 650 bucks. Odometer sais 130,000 miles but it dont work so who knows what it has. I found a list of repairs done at 109K in the glove box but the date is 2001 (ball joints, wheel bearing, brakes, fuel pump, etc) so I hope its not too much past that. Im thinking add a 4 inch lift and some bigger tires. Sand it down a little bit and shoot it flat black. No rust repair just leave it. The rust is not horrible and wont show that bad through flat black. The interior is really what sold me. Its near perfect. If someone takes the time to keep it that clean than I think they would take care of it mechanically also.

D.O.T. / What fuel has the longest shelf life?
« on: January 05, 2016, 08:11:18 AM »
I got sucked into a tv show. Last man on earth.  Kind of dumb but I like it. One episode the gas turned bad. Turned into jell. I know that don't happen but one guy on there sad Hey I told you this would happen.  Diesel last longer.

Got me to thinking. A gallon can of gas will go bad in 8 months or a year.  Will a 500 gallon barrel go bad that fast or will that quantity stay good longer?
How long would the same gallon can of diesel last?
What about propane?
The military uses JP8 I don't know much about that except its jet fuel but like kerosene. Can it be used in diesel trucks? Most likely hard for a civilian to obtain.

Every farm has fuel storage. If something happened I just wonder how Long before we are out of usable fuel?  Don't want to waste fuel in a SHTF situation  but if it will go bad in a certain amount of time just as well use it. I know we have a few propane tanks that have been full for a couple years. Filled them to run the grain dryers and never needed them. How long before they go bad?

D.O.T. / Who is traveling for christmas? Where you goin?
« on: December 23, 2015, 08:23:52 AM »
Were headed to the great state of Kentucky day after christmas. Been planning for a while. Was just going to be me and momma and the 2 little ones. Leave the truck at home and drive the Traverse. Save some money on fuel. Plenty of room so I asked a buddy of mine to ride along. Has been wanting to go with but we always have all the kids.
So get a phone call. Seems the mother in law got the boys a pair of them little Chinese 4 wheelers, cheap. Well crap. I guess we will drive the truck. Then my daughter decides she wants to go. I'm not going to say no but now we're gonna be crowded in the truck and that sucks.
So I'm thinking I wish that Traverse had a hitch I'd borrow a little trailer. So I get on eBay and get one. My brother and I intall it. Get the trailer from my neighbor yesterday. Check the bearings. All rusty. Replace the bearings. Take the big ramp off it just catches wind anyway. Make a little tail gate out of a 2x6 and I think we are about ready to go. This trip has been a lot of work and we haven't even left yet.

Maybe we can sneak away and do a little fishing.

I received this in an email yesterday Thought I would pass it on.

What I See Happening In a Trump Presidency

By Bill Bennett

They will kill him before they let him be president. It could be a Republican or a Democrat that instigates the shutting up of Trump.

Don’t be surprised if Trump has an accident. Some people are getting very nervous: Barack Obama, Valerie Jarrett, Eric Holder, Hillary Clinton and Jon Corzine, to name just a few.

It's about the unholy dynamics between big government, big business, and big media. They all benefit by the billions of dollars from this partnership, and it's in all of their interests to protect one another. It's one for all and all for one.

It’s a heck of a filthy relationship that makes everyone filthy rich, everyone except the American people. We get ripped off. We’re the patsies. But for once, the powerful socialist cabal and the corrupt crony capitalists are scared. The over-the-top reaction to Trump by politicians of both parties, the media, and the biggest corporations of America has been so swift and insanely angry that it suggests they are all threatened and frightened.

Donald Trump can self-fund. No matter how much they say to the contrary, the media, business, and political elite understand that Trump is no joke.  He could actually win and upset their nice cozy apple cart.

It's no coincidence that everyone has gotten together to destroy The Donald.  It's because most of the other politicians are part of the a good old boys club. They talk big, but they won’t change a thing. They are all beholden to big-money donors. They are all owned by lobbyists, unions, lawyers, gigantic environmental organizations, and multinational corporations – like Big Pharmacy or Big Oil. Or they are owned lock, stock, and barrel by foreigners like George Soros owns Obama or foreign governments own Hillary and their Clinton Foundation donations.

These run-of-the-mill establishment politicians are all puppets owned by big money.  But there's one man who isn't beholden to anyone.  There's one man who doesn't need foreigners, or foreign governments, or George Soros, or the United Auto Workers, or the teacher's union, or the Service Employees International Union, or the Bar Association to fund his campaign.

Billionaire tycoon and maverick Donald Trump doesn’t need anyone’s help. That means he doesn’t care what the media says. He doesn’t care what the corporate elites think. That makes him very dangerous to the entrenched interests. That makes Trump a huge threat to those people. Trump can ruin everything for the bribed politicians and their spoiled slave masters.

Don’t you ever wonder why the GOP has never tried to impeach Obama? Don’t you wonder why John Boehner and Mitch McConnell talk a big game, but never actually try to stop Obama? Don’t you wonder why Congress holds the purse strings, yet has never tried to de-fund Obamacare or Obama’s clearly illegal executive action on amnesty for illegal aliens? Bizarre, right? It defies logic, right?

First, I'd guess many key Republicans are being bribed. Secondly, I believe many key Republicans are being blackmailed. Whether they are having affairs, or secretly gay, or stealing taxpayer money, the National Security Agency knows everything.

Ask former House Speaker Dennis Hastert about that. The government even knew he was withdrawing large sums of his own money from his own bank account. The NSA, the SEC, the IRS, and all the other three-letter government agencies are watching every Republican political leader. They surveil everything. Thirdly, many Republicans are petrified of being called racists, so they are scared to ever criticize Obama or call out his crimes, let alone demand his impeachment. Fourth , why rock the boat?  After defeat or retirement, if you’re a good old boy, you’ve got a $5 million-per-year lobbying job waiting. The big-money interests have the system gamed. Win or lose, they win.

But Trump doesn’t play by any of these rules. Trump breaks up this nice, cozy relationship between big government, big media, and big business. All the rules are out the window if Trump wins the Presidency. The other politicians will protect Obama and his aides but not Trump. Remember: Trump is the guy who publicly questioned Obama's birth certificate.  He questioned Obama's college records and how a mediocre student got into an Ivy League university.  Now, he's doing something no Republican has the chutzpah to do.  He's questioning our relationship with Mexico; he's questioning why the border is wide open; he's questioning why no wall has been built across the border; he's questioning if allowing millions of illegal aliens into America is in our best interests; he's questioning why so many illegal aliens commit violent crimes, yet are not deported; and he's questioning why our trade deals with Mexico, Russia and China are so bad.

Trump has the audacity to ask out loud why American workers always get the short end of the stick. Good question! I'm certain Trump will question what happened to the almost billion dollars given in a rigged no-bid contract to college friends of Michelle Obama at foreign companies to build the defective Obamacare website.  By the way, that tab is now up to $5 billion. Trump will ask if Obamacare's architects can be charged with fraud for selling it by lying.  Trump will investigate Obama's widespread IRS conspiracy, not to mention Obama's college records. Trump will prosecute Clinton and Obama for fraud committed to cover up Benghazi before the election.  How about the fraud committed by employees of the Labor Department when they made up dramatic job numbers in the last jobs report before the 2012 election?

Obama, the multinational corporations and the media need to stop Trump. They recognize this could get out of control. If left unchecked, telling the raw truth and asking questions everyone else is afraid to ask, Trump could wake a sleeping giant.  Trump's election would be a nightmare.  Obama has committed many crimes.  No one else but Trump would dare to prosecute.  He will not hesitate.  Once Trump gets in and gets a look at the cooked books and Obama's records, the game is over.  The jig is up.  The goose is cooked.  Holder could wind up in prison. Jarrett could wind up in prison.  Obama bundler Corzine could wind up in prison for losing $1.5 billion of customer money.  Clinton could wind up in jail for deleting 32,000 emails or for accepting bribes from foreign governments while Secretary of State, or for misplacing $6 billion as the head of the State Department, or for lying about Benghazi .  The entire upper level management of the IRS could wind up in prison.

Obamacare will be de-funded and dismantled. Obama himself could wind up ruined, his legacy in tatters. Trump will investigate. Trump will prosecute. Trump will go after everyone involved. That’s why the dogs of hell have been unleashed on Donald Trump.

Yes, it's become open season on Donald Trump.  The left and the right are determined to attack his policies, harm his businesses, and, if possible, even keep him out of the coming debates  But they can't silence him.   And they sure can't intimidate him.  The more they try, the more the public will realize that he's the one telling the truth.

This is a soap opera but here we go. So my oldest is 18. HE has been dating this girl for over a year. She gets pregnant and they break up because he cheats. Ok fine BUT he has no ambition to do anything. HE had been living with my mom an hour away and she just let him lay around. Got on drugs. Finally he must have gotten tired of everyone on his butt to get off his butt. So he and his current Girlfriend (A psycho is I ever seen one) decide they are going to move away. Awesome. Get to a new town away from old friends and get off the crap.  So they move way to the other side of the state. Out on the Wyoming border. As far away as he could and stay in the same state. 460 miles away. Old Girlfriend is still prego not due until the middle of December. Fine come back for the birth and stay for Christmas and go back. Nope baby came early. HE and current GF are broke up. He has no wheels. Instead of asking family he is calling old buddys. His old gang. No body helps him. His ex wont take him. Then hes askes the only other person he hangs out with out there but she wont take him because she will miss thanksgiving with her kids. Well DUH. My brothers wife has family out in the middle of the state. So I get ahold of the kid and say hay call Uncle Kyle and kiss his butt maybe he will come get you. Got that figured out. He will be here Saturday I will be taking him back next week sometime.

This kid and a lot of kids I know have to realize nobody is going to help them just because they want it. HE is going to have to realize he has to do for himself. Cant rely on other people. At least he has a job. Finally. Its not much working at Taco Johns but hey I worked at Mc Donalds once myself.
Looking back I know what happened to him. I had him here on the farm working. Trying to keep him on the right track. He had a pretty good work ethic for a young teenager.  Then he got in trouble and put in a group home. It was that or Juvie. Spent a couple years in there with a bunch of lazy gang banger wannabes and he is a totally different person. Everything I tried to do, morals, work ethic everything erased. He did graduate high school and then he just quit doing anything.

Now for the happy stuff. I fully intend to be in this child's life no matter what the boy does. She is beautiful. I dont care how big of a man you are when you hold your child or grand child for the first time you melt. Nothing more precious than a new born baby. Her name is AVA 7lbs 9 oz

Decided to can some beef today. I'm almost out from last time. I do this 2 or three times a year. All meats Pork, beef, and deer are done the same way. Chicken is a little bit different.
First think to do is let the roast thaw a little bit. Half frozen is easiest to cut.
I pull out several roast when i go to bed and put them in the sink to thaw. They are abut perfect in the morning.
Cut into cubes 1/2 inch or so.
Then pack into jars with an inch of head space and put in a pressure canner.
A pressure canner is different from a pressure cooker. You can cook in a canner but you cant can in a cooker.
At my elevation I process quarts for 90 minutes at 10lbs pressure pints at75 minutes at the same pressure.
Pictures will come as the day goes on.
I am trying something new today I am saving the bones and will be making beef stock.
