All, if you have time and are close to the computer there is a good chance this will go tonight 830EST, it will be kind of history making if all goes to plan, the first stage will be returning and landing on a pad close to where it took off. If you have kids it should be a great opportunity for them to see history (if all goes to plan)!

they don't start streaming until 30min before launch

It is really great to see it be successful. Made in "Merica with engineering that is local.

I think one of our biggest embarrassments as a nation in the last 20 years is being dependent on Russia for our space program. SpaceX and Bezos takes it a step further.

That 1st stage coming back in for a landing was intense. It's like something out of a scifi movie, firing retro rockets and all that. Very cool moment.

I agree. That was amazing to say the least. One can only imagine the engineering behind that feat.

And THAT is what is very different with this company and rocket. I don't think that has been done before.

Did you see the vid where they launched the falcon 9 first stage only and slowly climbed to 1000M altitude, then hovered it for awhile, then descended it for a spot on landing back on the pad?

So by grandpa you're the oldest by probably ten years or so, possibly even less because college grads today seem confused about age and wisdom. But youngest in aerospace years meaning you're somewhat new to the industry? Because when I first read it I was confused as how you can be a young grandpa. Fascinating accomplishment for space x and all involved though, even if somehow or another you have managed to be old and young all at the same time :)

Well it depends on how you want to look at it, most of the "children" are either fresh outs (4 year) or have their masters and a few have Doctorate so in a lot of cases I have been in Aviation/Aerospace longer than they have been alive so it averages that most are anywhere between 10-25 years younger than me. I have been around Airplanes my entire life, but my career in aerospace really started in 1998, I don't count my Military time and Pilot time as Aerospace. So in the Aerospace/Aviation you have a 50year time frame to be somewhat effective that's why they call me Uncle or Grandpa. Uncle to my face, Grandpa behind my back.

Phil,

That is pretty cool. How does the falcon 9 stay attached to its landing boat, and is that boat remote controlled? I see it said something about autonomous drone or some such. Also, is this the first successful landing on the water like that?

Was the launch in FL?

Basically what is do is we run over after the rocket has been secured and we have big steel shoes that go over the landing foot and we weld that to the barge. Yes the barge is a drone ship, and it was the first time we kept it upright. We have hit the barge every time we have tried, just a little too hard in most cases! We launched out of the Cape, the ship is 200miles off the coast.

I can't tell you how proud I am of SpaceX and the people that work there. So many incremental accomplishments over the years. Much to look forward to as well.

I have a nephew in law that works at SpaceX and he loves it. They moved from Ohio to Austin for the job and couldn't be happier.

Our government space program has been a national embarrassment for years depending on Russia to launch our astronauts to the space station. The private sector has stepped up and are bringing it back. ;D

I am old enough to remember sitting in front of the black and white TV watching the first moon landing live with Walter Cronkite narration getting in the way. You want to talk about inspiring kids to go into science/technology/math... that was a moment. Hopefully SpaceX is bringing that back as well.
