Well you have to love it guys. Remember the sign,

"WE RESERVE THE RIGHT NOT TO SERVE YOU"

Most of the press hates it, most AMERICANS love it and it is OUR RIGHT!!!!

If you are close, go on by if you can get in!! I guess business is booming  ;D

Powerplant, Driveline, and Braking / 8 Lug hubs for a Dana 60??
« on: January 20, 2015, 01:09:46 AM »
OK, so I have a dana 60 with the external LARGE hubs with Seletro hubs. This is called an external hub from my research. Flares out from the WMS to the locking hubs.

I also have a GM corp 10 bolt with the large 8 lug hubs and wondering if they will swap over to the dana 60? EI; Are they like the GM Dana 60 with the 8x6.5 hub or is the 10 bolt smaller?

Just came back from the AMA 2015 expo in Ontario, Ca. Was a fun weekend with the guys. Drank some shine, played with toys and worked on guns.

Anyway the big thing the last couple years has been "quads" which are basically a 4 rotor helicopter that is very stable. Drawbacks are the smaller ones don't like wind at all and the bigger ones cost $$$$ to the point of being scary. The larger ones have as many as 6 rotors (all located on booms) and some have dual motors so there is some redundancy if a motor goes out (rare).

One that really caught my eye was the Syma X5. It is just a small quad but has a camera that shoots 720 video and pics, but they must be downloaded after you land. However for something well under $100 it does what it should.

http://www.amazon.com/Syma-X5C-Channel-2-4GHz-Explorers/dp/B00KI03U8Q

There there are the slightly bigger quads and the price is in the mid $100s up to about 1k. Now these have much more support (aka-parts) better video and many have GPS and FPV (first person viewing) which means real time video.

The big one here is the Blade 350 QX3 from Horizon Hobbies; http://www.horizonhobby.com/350-qx3-ap-combo-rtf-with-safe-technology-blh8160?clickpath=homepage_rotator1_01052015

This will return to home with GPS but you have to fly this all the time. It does however transmit realtime video and pictures. Here is a link to video of one of them flying; https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=4BskKD2tUg0 (yes I am there wearing a red shirt)

Then for a few $$ more you can step up to the Typhoon 500; http://www.horizonhobby.com/q500-typhoon-rtf-with-cgo2-gb-camera-p-yunq500rtfus
This has the same video options BUT you can set waypoints and it will fly hands off with presets and waypoints. However at this time you must set your waypoints buy flying to them.

I was at a model aircraft show in Ontario Ca. Sounds like toys but so much more. It is also a weekend out with the guys and I got some great info for camera platforms.

A couple pics here for Don though. He should recognize the speaker here and the model heli. A hint is the speaker is a household name for aerobatics. That model is worth around $3000, much less the time.

Guys, reff this little project here; http://real-man-truckworks-and-survival.com/index.php?topic=623.msg7253#msg7253

I am looking for a set of springs for the 91 2500 suburban that have a military wrap. I know I can custom order anything but not looking to break the bank either.

Got this from a bud of mine who has a nice little hideaway up in Tehachapi. To bad it is a little to far for a bugout for me.

Subject: Rattlesnake Logic

As long as we insist on maintaining the "moral high ground" we will NEVER win the war on terrorism! We're in a conflict in which this liberal administration INSIST on playing by a set of illogical rules against a maniacal group who have NO rules!

Rattlesnake Logic....

After the Boston bombing the news media spent days and weeks trying to determine why these men did what they did.   They want to know what America did(!) to make these brothers so angry with us.  They want to know why these men were not arrested before they did something so terrible.   The media is in a tizzy about this new era of homegrown radicals and about why and how they can live among us and still hate us.

A friend of mine from Texas explained it all to me: "Here in west Texas, I have rattlesnakes on my place, living among us.  I have killed a rattlesnake on the front porch.  I have killed a rattlesnake on the back porch.  I have killed rattlesnakes in the barn, in the shop and on the driveway.  In fact, I kill every rattlesnake I encounter.

I kill rattlesnakes because I know a rattlesnake will bite me and inject me with poison.  I don't stop to wonder WHY a rattlesnake will bite me; I know it WILL bite me because it's a rattlesnake and that's what rattlesnakes do.  I don't try to reason with a rattlesnake or have a "meaningful dialogue" with it.  I just kill it.  I don't try to get to know the rattlesnake better so I can find a way to live with the rattlesnakes and convince them not to bite me.  I just kill them. I don't quiz a rattlesnake to see if I can find out
where the other snakes are, because (a) it won't tell me and (b) I already know they live on my place.   So, I just kill the rattlesnake and move on to the next one.

I don't look for ways I might be able to change the rattlesnake to a non-poisonous rat snake...I just kill it.  Oh, and on occasion, I accidentally kill a rat snake because I thought it was a rattlesnake at the time.  Also, I know for every rattlesnake I kill, two more are lurking out there in the brush.  In my lifetime I will never be able to rid my place of rattlesnakes.

Do I fear them?  Not really.  Do I respect what they can do to me and my family?  Yes!! And because of that respect, I give them the fair justice they deserve ... I kill them.

As a country, we should start giving more thought to the fact that these jihadists' are telling the world their goal is to kill Americans and destroy
our way of life.  They have just posted two graphic videos on the internet showing them beheading Americans.   They are serious.  They are exactly like rattlesnakes.   It is high time for us to start acting accordingly!

I love this country.  It's the damn government I'm afraid of!

Well guys, just picked this up. Only $400, plus got a 10% off. 8 tools with a couple things dewalt doesn't offer in 20v

I have some Ryobi (crud batteries) but OK tools and ONLY at HD.

Was half the price of Dewalt I have and it has more tools. and batteries are much less.

I like have the cordless grinder and multi cutter. Only downside is no hammer drill, but I have an sds for that.

I don't use them for a living or everyday but demand a decent tool.

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / LED Worklight
« on: December 19, 2014, 06:05:30 PM »
Guys, nothing like a good worklight when you are doing, well whatever!!

I have got about 5 of these now from Lowes. They are only $20 and seem to work just as well as a 250 Halogen does. Plus they are light, don't get hot AND WORK ON 12 volt DC and 120 AC!!!

The 12v cord is long enough to go about anywhere from your cab or bed, they lay flat or stand up and don't break like a Halo if you knock it over.

They have a 1200 lumen version too, but I have a Snap On brand I got at Costco, works awesome!!

Build Threads / 1991/1985 Suburban 2500 build and flip, again!
« on: December 18, 2014, 01:07:38 AM »
Man you guys are tuff  8)!!!

OK, you asked for it, you get some. I also finally added "Spartan" as that is what you all want and its different.

You saw the first pic but here it is again. After looking it over, we loaded it up. Could easily have driven it home, but I figured for the $60 trailer rental I was sure I would get it there.

Has an Optima battery and she started right up after a wire was wiggled a couple times, everything worked! It did through the belt as I loaded it and the closest auto store was at least 10 miles back.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What you see above is the continuation of this thread; http://real-man-truckworks-and-survival.com/index.php?topic=81.msg679#msg679

My 1500 Suburban that will now get flipped to fund this!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 2500 here is going to receive a 1991 6BT Cummins, 47r tranny and NP205 from a couple diff trucks.

It will also get a Dana 60 from a Dodge with the passenger drop. Right now that has 4.10 gears and external locking hubs that will be changed to internal hubs.

The rearend will be a GM 14 bolt FF with 4.10 gears also. It will get disc brakes and some type of locker.

Both axles are 67 WMS to WMS and are 8 lug with 9/16th studs.

The frame will get boxed at least to the drivers door, but probably well past that.

I will do a rear shackle flip to gain around 5 inches in back and probably use the stock springs or a new set of 1 ton springs. Front will get new spring too as the are a reverse arch right now so a good solid spring set (with military wrap) will go up front to hold up the extra 500lbs of motor.

These thing have terrible bump steer so it will get crossover steering.

As for the interior, it is a truck. It screams utility but is solid for a 206k truck. It has rubber mats and front bucket vinyl seats, 2 row bench and no 3rd row for now.

Stock it has a 42 gallon fuel tank with a skid plate. This is fine for a start but I can see another 25 gallon in there someplace.

For the 6BT there are bolt in mounts for the conversion, but at $600 I think I can fab what I need quite well.

I am leaning towards hummer wheels or similar. I want steel wheels that you can bend back if you bend em. Plus a split wheel you can change, god knows I busted enough trucks tires in my younger years to have a hold on that.

It will have custom front a rear bumper with a new winch and nerf/steps bars of some type.

Everything will get freshened up at minimum as it goes in.

Now all this is a good start and is subject to change without notice,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Silver is under $16 oz!!

Guys, just bought a little more Silver from Silver.com and it was like 5% over spot.

Cheaper than JM but they charge shipping, but still lower price.

Oil is falling as is the market all week and things look nasty in russia.

Not really Early but Merry Christmas to all you lugs out there.

Got my Miller 211 dual voltage mig and it works great! Had a small issue with a plug I covered in another thread, but was my fault  ::)

Anyway I got this but still had my cart from my Lincoln 175 mig. Thought sure it will fit and it did. However it sat low, the Mig rubbed on the bottle and there was NO room under it cept for little things. Heck I wanted my plasma down there. Why not carry it all together when you use it together,,,,,,,,,,,,

So I look at the cart and it is a simple 2 inch angle on the front and flange across the back. So why not just move the front 2 inch angle to the back and make new ones for the front?

Take a couple measurements and a piece of 2 inch angle x 36 should just do it. $5 at the local metal shop and $2 for more nuts/bolts.

So I take it apart, cut the angle to 18 inches on the band saw, mark a few holes with a silver sharpie (great for metal work guys) and drill a few 1/4 in holes.

164
Ok, so hopefully you've seen my build started here; http://real-man-truckworks-and-survival.com/index.php?topic=81.0

Well the stock 8.5 will never cut it for what I have planned much less the small-block blew her up so she is getting a 14 bolt full floater. Picked one up from CL for just $120 that has the 4.10's matching the Dana 60 I have for the front.

For the 14 bolt I want to go with a locker and disc brakes. Has anyone done he disc swap here? I build my own for an 14 bolt sf sometime back and they worked great.

Looks like I have the wide SRW (single rear wheel ) hubs and the width is 67 in. For discs I really want to have slide on rotors vs held on with studs from the rear. Not sure if someone here can help me with that but some of the kits look to work that way, some do not.

I also like this skid plate for the yoke up front as the 14b tends to be on the LARGE side. It just bolts onto the pinion carrier.

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / Miller 211 issue
« on: December 08, 2014, 01:40:22 AM »
Well, I thought it was an issue, but was more of a "I feel stupid" problem  ::)

Anyway got the Miller 211 Mig with dual voltage about 9 months ago. Worked great. Did a few repairs for friends and was comfy with it.

Was about to modify my 2 ton hoist so it would fold flatter and allow me to open a gate fully on the side of the house where I park the toy hauler.

Then I was welding up (or trying) a tire mount for a bud and it kept eating tips. Figured it was some sort of "contamination" in the feed, but just couldn't pin it down.

So after going through about 6 tips, checking I had gas, playing with feed and pressure I just plain gave up. Probably wasted a good 50ft of wire when the tips welded to the wire, man the nests were a B**$H!!!!!!!!!!!

Now after a couple weeks of cleaning the garage and now needing to the hoist out I am about to take the welder into the dealer and see how good the warranty really is. But first I do a little web searching and figure it is the gas causing the issues as in no flow. So as I am about to pull the plug on a new flow-meter I check it out one more time. Plenty of gas (1800psi), flow needle jumps when I squeeze the trigger but I hear nothing at the tip. So I open up the box (another nest not cleaned up) and check where the hose come into the machine.
Well low and behold I see an O ring in the open and know that something isn't right since they normally keep gas going somewhere. I loosen the thumbscrew up a little (it was snug) apply a little nose oil (dad taught me that) to the O rings and slid the assembly all the way in. Snugged up the thumbscrew and fired that puppy up. WOW, gas comes out the nozzle again.

Well now the mig is back up and I learned another lesson in checking the little things. I must have cleared a nest out of that thing 10 times and missed that. Checked the thumbscrew but just missed the hose being pushed out that 1/4 inch.

Tech/Electronics / Video Cameras to get started. Wired and wireless
« on: November 22, 2014, 01:27:50 AM »
Sure you have all seen the video systems from Walmart to Costco, so how so they really work?

I have this one from Harbor Frieght; http://www.harborfreight.com/color-security-system-with-night-vision-60565.html got it on sale for under $40. For what it is it works very good. It is wired so mounting somewhere is easy, plus it is 12v so it opens up lots of vehicle options.

I use a couple of the HF wired security cameras too, but they leave a lot to be desired. I have got some HD dome cameras off Ebay that work so much better for under $20.

I also have a few of these Wireless setups I got from Ebay and they works OK to for the price and being 2.4ghz. The little stand alone camera is nice as well as just adding a 9v battery. There are even recievers that plug right in via USB which opens up many options for viewing and recording. Software is a dime a dozen for this too.

Drones, Boats, Flying and Floating Things / Sureillance Quad heli Setup
« on: November 11, 2014, 01:07:06 PM »
OK, so this keeps coming up and I see links with with crazy prices for something that is not.

Also, stay AWAY from goggles, it screws up your head when you fly, looking at a small monitor is so much better.

So from a major company you can get this RTF (ready to fly) and just add the monitor of your choice. Not cheap, but not several K either.

The 350 quad from Horizon goes for $900 street price. Plus you can get spare parts at almost any Hobby Shop or online from US companies.

http://www.horizonhobby.com/350-qx2-ap-combo-rtf-with-safe-reg%3B-technology-blh7900?clickp

You get a Quad heli with Transmitter that has 3 axis gyro stabilization with GPS return, 5.8ghz real time video camera on a 2 axis gimbal.

They also sell this without a camera or transmitter if want to upgrade or have GoPro type camera already.

There is also a optional fitted case and you can upgrade the transmitter for more range and more abilities with the camera in flight.

For a monitor, about the best I have found is from Hobbyking. It is a 7 inch with 5.8ghz reception and touch screen. $140

https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__64660__Quanum_7inch_Auto_Scan_32CH_5_8GHz_Diversity_Monitor_With_Built_In_Battery.html

So for around $1100 you can have a "basic" system. Throw in another few hundred and you get more range and the ability to aim the camera in flight.

Firearms / Spare Parts, what do you realy need.
« on: November 06, 2014, 09:21:13 PM »
OK, so things have gone amiss but you and your loved ones are good. Your trusty M4, AK, Glock or 12 gauge is holding up fine, but is it?

What parts would you have for each? There are "spare parts" kits and such but what really breaks or needs replacing from the real world?

On my trusty old Mossberg 500A, the safety is plastic and broke in half. Not that I use the safety, but I do check it time to time.

169
Well, not a vehicle but thought I would throw this in here since it comes to Maintenance.

I have a nice 2005 Eclipse 23ft (measures 24?) Toy Hauler that I got for a song a few years back. It was in great shape, even the roof which is EDM rubber an industry standard. They are supposed to last around 10 years with good maitenance which really just means keep it clean, wipe preservative on it and don't abuse it. Keeping it covered or parking indoors is a big plus. The roofs "wear or age" by the surface oxidizing to a fine powder over the years. Rub your hand over it and you will see!

Anyway mine is almost 10 years old and looked good last year I was up there to wipe it down and treat it. Then a few months ago I saw a mushroom growing both inside and outside on the right side above the awning. So I knocked it off and thought some water got in where the screw are for the awning. Saw nothing and promptly forgot about it. So here it is months later and I notice the wall is a little soft inside the electric bunk beds while I'm storing up some food and watching a movie with the kids (12 year old daughter had 10 girls over for her birthday and we needed out!!)

OK, so I remember the issue with the mushroom and check it out the next day and find 3-4 tears on the edge less than a 1/2 long and it is mushy on the edge. So out comes the knife and I cut the roof just a little in from the edge and find a MESS!!!!!!!!!

The OSB is soft or rotten for about 3 ft going in around 3 inches. SO out comes everything I can get at and leave her open to dry out. I find there are 2 crossmembers there which are a little rotten on the end. As I am cleaning it up I am figuring how to address this damage and keep the walk on roof solid.

It took 2 days of on-off cleaning-cutting and vacuuming until I got it to where I am happy. This also allowed it to dry out well since we were having 80f days while keeping it covered at night. Naturally we got rain just as I was ready to start the repair so it got covered in plastic and taped off for a couple days.

The repair will consist of replacing the OSB cut out now to 4"x48" and adding a 2x2 replacing the 1x2 edging that was stock. That will fill the end of the trusses that were trimmed off. I will layer 6oz FG cloth using epoxy resin (doesn't crack like polyester resin). The resin will act like a great glue and the cloth will add the strength lost on the trusses. Inside I braced the ceiling during the repair to keep things fairly level.

Over this area I will use a small EDM patch that overlaps at least 1 inch on the top and will go under the aluminum drip edge like the original roof. Then I will seal the edges with EDM sealant. Then I will recoat the entire roof that is supposed to give another 10 year life.

170
Got a little package like a few of you I believe and did a little selfie.

Thanks Big D, they look great!!!!!

Tech/Electronics / Power when the switch doesn't work.
« on: October 03, 2014, 11:47:58 AM »
Ok, so we have a little SHTF or just a friendly EMP or even just that prolonged blackout after whatever.

So how do you keep your food fresh, batteries charged or even listen to the radio. Now depending on if you prep at all, this may not concern you, sure the Gov will fix it, right?
How is that working for you now?

Anyway power will be like gold when there is none, so plan to have some. You need to generate something, being you have your kid peddle a generator, have a real generator or maybe a small solar setup.

I have 2 generators, 1 in a trailer with lots of gas and a couple deep cycle batteries, but gas does not last forever. I also have a 5k backup sitting in the shed that has served me well a couple times. But then again we are talking at the most maybe 2 weeks of fuel if run say 1-2 hrs a day. Now if you have diesel, that time may double and you can burn alot more than just diesel most of the time.

Some of you may have solar on the house, great. If all you do is use it and sell back, you are selling your self short. You need to have storage for that juice you make in the form of batteries and for the price it is hard to beat a good ol golf cart 6v battery. 4 of these would probably get you through a night easy. Sure you can get sealed batteries with no maintenance but they are pricey and don't really last longer.

I have played with solar some (hey it is cool) and am now looking at a 1-2kwh unit right now. That is as simple as 4-8 panels on a shed out back which will run my pool and some AC in the summer. Charge a few batteries and then you can use that converter at night for lights, radio and the fridge.

If something does happen there will be batteries everywhere as cars don't get used when gas goes away, so don't threat over how much storage you have, just know you can have it.

Remember too that if you have lights on when no one else does for any period of time, you may become a target. If you have light, you may have food, ammo or whatever.

What do you have, thoughts?

Drones, Boats, Flying and Floating Things / Quads with cameras
« on: September 29, 2014, 11:06:16 PM »
Well, all it costs is money right?

Well here are a couple I found with a quick search on the E site.

First is under a $100 and has a real time screen on the controller. You still have to fly this there and back and it is small. But for this price it could almost be a throw away.

Second you get GPS hold and return to station but is not setup for real time. Fly her over or around, bring it back and see what you can't see in minutes. You are looking at a grand here though.

Tech/Electronics / A charger for all
« on: September 24, 2014, 02:12:39 AM »
Guys, I have 2 of these and looking at another. 2 cell for the truck, one on the bench.

They charge ANY battery and maintain it after its charged (cept 9v). Works with 12vDC and 110ac

This is the high end and the other has LEDs vs all the info you see.

Ad a nice foldout Solar panel and you good for off grid too.

Build Threads / 1991 Suburban Build for a flip. Former 6BT candidate.
« on: September 20, 2014, 03:05:40 PM »
Picked this 1991 Suburban up for $500. Just a 1500 but a cali truck with just some rust on the roof and faded paint.

Been parked for around 8 years, blown rear (gm 8.5) with a 4 inch lift and just 85k miles. Interior is great with a 3rd seat.

I may flip or upgrade to a 6BT (which I have) and get a 2500 with a big block so it will have the gm 10.5 rear and a heavier frame (.194 vs .177)

178
Hi Guys, I sorta started all this over in Tech so we will see how this goes.

We would use drones or radio control aircraft for carrying something here to there. Be it a camera or small payload (F A A and H L S) look down on this so be careful. It was really a big deal 10 years ago and right now they are passing laws to regulate this. You can read about it on the AMA site which is a safey-governing organization in the USA.

Tech/Electronics / Welcome guys
« on: September 18, 2014, 06:55:49 PM »
Well guys, Don pulled me into this too.

Although I am not a nerd with all the techie stuff, I understand it and fly RC aircraft (about 45 years)

The camera systems out there can be simple or whatever your pocket can handle.

You can simply take pictures or video and download or do realtime, but the price goes up.

Plus anyone can fly now with the gyro systems out there. If you have seen the new transformer movie, many shots are from a 6 rotor radio control copter. The heli and the cameras are gyro stabilized.

Here are a few links to wet your interest;

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__55141__Quanum_Nova_FPV_GPS_Waypoint_QuadCopter_PNF_.html

http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/350-qx2-ap-combo-rtf-with-safe-reg-technology-BLH7900

http://www.draganfly.com/uav-helicopter/draganflyer-x6a/

 http://www.skycamusa.com/gallery.shtml

Now if this goes you going just open your wallet. Planes will work too, and some are so small you can just throw and catch (it does take practice) and planes tend to be MUCH quieter and can glide.

181
Yep, I got it at around 95 K. Thought it was the rear seal at first and talked to Nate about.

Since this IS an issue with looks like pre 07 Dmaxs, what repairs have you guys used?

Right now I did the epoxy fix to hold me for a few more weeks and filled her with 5/30 synthetic.

I also plan to ad to the skid plate that stops just past the tcase that may save it once if going forward, but will do no good otherwise.
