I'll have you know, my tank was always in the best condition
I have mentioned this before, but when the movie "Stripes" was filmed the crew picked my tanks to use as a backdrop! I had just painted them and when Bill murray did the motor pool AWOL scene they filmed it right in front of D-13, I was the Platoon Sergeant, and my personal M60A1 was in the background. I still remember that Tank's serial number: JJ003W
Let me see if I can find that vid...

OK, found a copy of the movie, although it is poor
at 47:14 in the scene, Bill Murray was just tackled. Right behind his left shoulder on a flat surface of the Tank is the bumper number D-13. That's one of the four M-60A1's I had. D-11, D-12, D-13, D-14. That was Ft Knox 1979 or 1980 in the motorpool of D Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Training Brigade where I served for a couple years training recruits to become M-60 Tank Crewman for the Army. After that it was flight school for me, the end of my Armor Corps days.

Now thats a transition, tanks to heli's.

Tell me about it!
Wasn't as hard for me as the later transition from helicopters to jets. Now that pushed my limits for a time.

I think with civilians you have to have a fixed wing license to go to helis. Is that true and the same for military?

No, you can start off in helos, but I would NOT recommend it.
As I have said several times before, helicopters are very dangerous. And very expensive to operate. The problem with learning to fly is to keep the cost low, most folks use the robinson R-22. It has a teetering, two blade, semi-rigid rotor system. The way it mounts to the mast, only inertia of the spinning blades keep everything properly clearanced. If you should allow rotor RPM to droop just a little, then do some "Jerky" maneuver, the rotor hub bump stops will then contact and most likely, separate from the mast. Meaning your only flight controls will be your hands stuck out of the windows.
Stick to starch wings, they are much safer and are forgiving. Oh, yes, helicopters are not forgiving. THose suckers just take...things like your life!

Yeah, those robinsons make me nervous. I've shot from those before and not very well I might add. Shooting from a heli is tough.

Nice.
Did you take any hits in the little birds? I thought you mentioned taking AK in other birds.
-
Wow. Little different when the stuff on the ground is shooting back.

I wasn't in that one. Was a friend of mine. I think either some state or Army guys filmed it from the ground. That was an outpost that was being attacked by some screamin' me-mes who needed some help. THe little birds showed up and made things right.
I don't have any good vids of my own, only some of the door gunner firing the minigun. Most times you are either too busy or don't have a camera handy. A lot goes on for the very few vids that are out there.

What?? You can’t multitask Don? Drinking that coke while spitting tobacco juice into the other can, performing mind blowing maneuvers and returning fire and you can’t take time for a selfie vid? ????
