this will be the start of my newly ordered Canyon diesel. I will update this as i receive the info from the dealership.
-
Exciting! Let us know how it works out. When I found out they were making a small duramax for those trucks I forwarded to my dad. It would be the perfect replacement for his Dodge Dakota.
-
Chevy has a chance to claim the small truck market over the Tacoma if they pull this off correctly
-
Scary thing will be if it's over powered compared to braking capacity- TOO many people pull too much trailer with too small of a vehicle which are severely under equipped when it comes to braking systems! Look at poor Ken with a Duramax hooked-up to a semi-trailer going down grade........ohhh, too soon? Naw! ;) ;)

Well Mike, may be a bit soon, naw, think its cool, but you do bring a good point.
Our trucks will pull anything, like the others will as well, getting going is one thing, stopping is the real thing.

Watching with great interest. What do you expect advertised towing numbers to be 6500? I see it has the turbo brake

Not a lot of info is out yet. heck, the salesman doesn't even know the exact price of the diesel option. from what I've read, towing should be around 6700.

They were saying 7700...same as that Toureg of mine
At least the Chebby has a frame and can actually tow 7700
-
Frame and proper hitch are the differences no doubt

The truck finally arrived at the rail yard in MA. i should hopefully take possession next week. This Friday will make 5 months I've been waiting for it.

What options did you go for?
-
i ordered it pretty much loaded.
4X4
black on black
4 door
long bed
nav
factory spray in liner
& all the other bells & whistles an SLT comes with.
-
I seen one a farm show last summer. I fell in love with it. Would be perfect for my wife.

For a brief moment they had the v8 5.3 liter in the Colorado. If I remember right they had it down tuned quite a bit

just a quick update, I now have about 2,500 miles on the odo. my last fill up netted me(hand calc)26mpg. that was roughly 70 hwy & 30 city. I'm also starting to mix in HHO that i get from converting oil heating systems to Nat gas.
-
HHO ?

Home heating oil. Not much of that in AZ

Any pics of the Canyon?

HHO ?

home heating oil, yes. funny, well sad that as i'm typing this my check engine light just came on. P20EE is the code. i may have just shot myself in the foot adding HHO. i put in approx 6 gallons last week. i really hope this $12.00 in savings doesn't cost me thousands & void my warranty on a truck with less than 3,000 miles.

Be very careful in adjusting the fuels in your common rail engine. Phieso-electric injectors work on specific pressures. Different materials have different degrees of compressibility. So if the injectors think they are squeezing diesel fuel, but are actually squeezing HHO, which is slightly different, there will be an effect.
-
Yeah, don't do that again! Lol

P20EE is NOx sensor I believe

But isn't HHO exactly the same ULSD except for the dye?

yes it is. I'm thinking maybe it sooted up?
-
I thought HHO was more similar to Off-road Diesel, which has a much higher sulfur content. Could be wrong.
-
This heating oil thang is all greek to me, but i will tell ya, nothing but pump fuel goes in my modern truck. period. ......and even then it's a gamble.
-
Off road and ULSD are the same except for the die. I have been told that it comes from the same place at the refinery and the die is added to the tanker. Not sure if that is actually true. HHO is similar to diesel but not refined as much. A couple winters ago I ran out of HHO oil a couple days before the new propane furnace was to be installed so I dumped some off-road diesel in it to get through. But as a couple other people had stated I wouldn't put HHO oil in my Dmax engine.

Yep. Especially in a vehicle under warranty. Double especially if it's a new to market engine. I learned that with the 6.7 cummins I bought when they first switched to them. I was at the stealership at least a half dozen times for minor issues. I've never seen hho oil, but if it's dyed you will have to run hundreds of gallons through the system to get the dye out. And even then I would be Leary about taking it in for service. And the massive massive fines involved with being caught running dyed fuel.
I know people that have done it and still do it but I'm not one of them.

It's a good fuel Ken. I know folks who run it in their logging and forest service helicopters. When the feds show up, they top off with Jet-A. It runs in turbines and Cummins (I heard) just fine
-
I've ran a few hundred gallons through my LBZ.
Mom and dad had oil furnace and the holding tank was on its way out.
Pumped it out filtered a few passes, then ran it 5 gallons a tank.
I wouldn't push any more for fear of issues. So yeah some motors will burn it, but, I'd be scared to run a lot at once in our common rail motors.
-

This is true. The taxation of the off road is less than the ULSD and is why they dye the off road to make sure we're not using fuel that pays the fed less.
-
Its all about the money!
-
My old corp yard got nailed for a $50K fine when they topped off a skid with non dyed fuel. Even though they pay the tax separate the feds said no.
I run a 5gal jug of Soy oil through my Max all time. That and 40+ ULSD gives me a 15% bio mix.

And it gives you untold protection to the HPIP. Soy is the single best lubricant for the highly stressed pumps in these common rail motors
-
so just a little update, my mechanic buddy cleared the code. He told me to run as much pump diesel as possible & see if it comes back on. he'll reset it once more if needed. after that, i'd have to start replacing NOx sensors. wish me luck.
-
Luck is wished. Thanks for the update

A quick update. A week has gone by & all is still well. I managed 28mpg(hand calc) on my last fill-up. I will also learn how to upload photos & post some soon.
-
speaking about MPG. the wife drove to WA last week and she averaged darn near 50 MPG @ 80mph in her jetta TDI

Great mileage but sometimes does it makes you think the gauge is broken!

just straight up soy oil, like fryer oil/cooking oil? what's the ratio to the 25 gal diesel?
-
Yep, good ol soy cooking oil, used it on/off for years.
20% is pretty normal.

DDS: Time for a long term ownership review?
I for one would like to know about this mini D-Max engine, and especially after it has seen some miles/Time...

Ask & you shall receive, current ODO is 23K
I will start off with the BAD:
The truck left me stranded & was towed back to the dealership 5 times in the first 6 months of ownership. Three of those were related to a loose starter wire, the other two was a bad BCM/ECM. I attribute these issues with first year production bugs along with poor workmanship at the dealership. The power characteristics is something that you have to get used to, it's not a rocket by any means but has plenty of torque. Passing power is a little low, but again, it's a truck.
Here is the GOOD
The truck gives a comfortable ride, super quiet inside & very easy to maneuver/park in city areas which is key.
The sound system is excellent along with plenty of interior amenities
Most important to me is the fuel mileage. Although this truck is capable of towing 7700#, my hitch will never see more than dust so I cannot comment on towing. If I baby it on the highway (55-60mph) I'll easily get 35+mpg. My problem is my other vehicle is a Vette & when I get in my truck, I think it's a race car & go 80 on the highway which kills my fuel economy. Going a steady 80, I'll achieve 25-27mpg which I think is still good.
Given all the issues I had in the beginning, I'd buy another one tomorrow in a heartbeat. When my warranty expires, I plan on doing a full delete & will see a 2-3mpg gain. Since I received it back from repair 9 months ago, it's been flawless. I truly believe I just had a couple bugs in the beginning that initially left a bad taste in my mouth. I would recommend it to anyone who wants the fuel mileage of a compact car with the practicality of a(midsize) truck.
-
Thank you
Sounds encouraging!
Good for you!
-
I like the details of them.

I wish they would drop that or something similar in a half ton. Geared for towing and not just fuel economy like the Ram 1500 diesel though. That would fit my bill perfectly I think.
