Got some more work done.

Torqued down with the mighty diesel head bolts.

60# valve springs and titanium retainers.

Adapter plate installed.

I have some other pics on my camera I'll throw up tomorrow.  Hope to finish buttoning it up and possibly put it in tomorrow night.

I have some help coming in this weekend so I'll have three additional people on it.  Shooting to have it turning over by Sunday night.

I have some fuel fittings that won't be here till Monday. Then Tuesday pick up my driveshafts and she should be a runner.

From what I've read the higher you go the more difficult it can be to start in the cold among other things.  Have you seen the 12 valve beginners thread on cummins forum?   I mean no insult by suggesting it.  It's chock full of everything you need to know about our engines.  Fuel supply issues timing etc.  After reading that several times through I've decided I'm going to 16 or 16.5 when I time mine.  Seems to strike the best balance.  Although I have to get it in the truck and running before I mess with the pump or timing.  I did put my 4k governor springs in today though.

If you don't mind I can paste the link.  It's bookmarked on my phone it's that good.

I'm not in doubt that much to take it apart and have it decked.  I'm going to continue prepping the deck and start putting it back together tomorrow.

Dropped off my radiator to be cleaned and tested and it held pressure but was pretty plugged up with something.  They tried cleaning it with no luck.  So I'm in the market for a radiator.  Also had my factory injectors tested to make sure they're ok before I put them back in.

Started putting my hydroboost conversion in today and figuring out how to adapt power steering hoses.   The hydroboost adds another wrinkle to an already super wrinkled situation.

On a serious note I do have a question.

The deck of my block has very minor surface imperfections towards the outside edge.  Wondering if it's normal.  I would say it was cast that way because it looks like it was machined flat over the top of them.

And them being towards the outside edge makes me think it should be fine.

Firearms / who is this?!
« on: November 01, 2015, 10:37:37 AM »
He's the guy that made a video right after sandy hook when gun control came up.   Said he was gonna start killing people.  They pulled his ccw permit and I'm sure he got some visits from some acronym agencies.

I've seen his video where they say he left his buddies to die and hid in a ditch.  It didn't look entirely that way to me, BUT I don't have any training to say what he "should" have done.

They were in a group of cars and they got ambushed.  In the video the camera is in the car behind him and you can see him get out of the car and go to the median and get in the ditch and turn around and start firing.    Like i said though.  I have no idea what the proper response would be if your car starts getting shot up from the side of the road.

Tires, Wheels, and Suspension / Re: Mud tire thread
« on: October 29, 2015, 05:45:05 PM »

I sold the living snot out of Toyos for years before moving to differential parts. worked for a smaller outfit on the west coast Les Schwab. I can vouch for the MT's. treat them well with good rotation schedule and inflation and 50k is a legitimate number. I sipe the center group of lugs but not the outers on HD trucks. all the way on jeeps and lighter vehicles but outer lugs on heavy trucks tend to chunk out. My absolute favorite is the Toyo M55 pinned for studs. last forever, great traction like the old interco buckshots, quieter than most M/T's but cost a fortune.

X2 on the bad shocks. Like the older wild country RVT's, they will scallop badly with poor shocks.

I'm running the M55's right now. I've passed 30+k on them now and they're holding up great. I haven't measured them but I'd guess over 50% left. These wear like iron, prior to these was running Nitto Terra's, hardly get 30K out of them. I had to order them in, (next day) as none of the shops I deal with stock them, and were easy enough to get. The guy at the shop said same type of sales mainly, oilfield, mining, etc, rough service use.
He was right! Now, the price, yikes! Not for the faint of heart, but if I can run them 2+ times longer, worth it.

These are my Nittos after about 5000 miles.

I'm pretty hard on them (loose rocks, pipeline ROWs, terrible lease roads etc). But still they shouldn't chew up like that after so few miles.  I had always wondered about them because every time I shop for tires they are close to cheapest ones available.  I know now and won't make that $1300 mistake again.

I had the Toyo mt  as the first set of tires I bought for my truck.  I wasn't off roading as much as I am now but I had zero complaints. Great road manners, great in the snow.  I drove through three bad snow storms from NE to PA right after I got them and they worked awesome.  Just pricey.

Have you incorporated a way to "liberate" fuel from other sources?

Example
If the grid goes down and fuel stations have no pump to get fuel out of their tanks.   You could rig up a quick connect on the inlet side of your pump to allow you to attach a length of hose to pump out of other tanks to fill your tank.

check your size requirements, but I've got some m6x1 flush mount zerks in TN and KY. I'd be happy to send you some no cost if they'll fit. I don't have the specs on ball joints on their own, just application data, so if you can figure it out, I'll ship 'em.

That is great customer service.

But to get the broken off zerks out I would have to take the front end all apart again.  There's just no room to get at the bottom of the upper ball joint when it's assembled.  Even apart I think I would have to remove the lower ball joint to get a drill or easy out in there.

Next spring I will probably tear down the front end and install the reverse shackle kit so I can do it then.

I've started ordering parts for the cummins swap. So far I've bought

Adapter plate
Clutch kit
Intercooler
Radiator hoses
Tach sender kit
Misc fittings for the power steering.

I've also secured my dads shop in MI.  I hate to drive 12 hours up there to do this but it's really the only option.   If my dad was going to be there it would be awesome to spend time with him but he's been feeling pretty good and they are going to FL for a couple months in November.   But a bright side is it will be just me up there and I will be able to work on the truck non stop.   After I get the truck done my girl and I are going to pull our camper down to where he is at in FL and spend some quality time down there.

I will actually have a place to work with concrete, lights and heat,  I'm going to be spoiled.

A little update.  I used my 4wd today for the first time since the front end rebuild.   The grease zerks that came with the upper ball joints were too long and they just barely cleared the stub shafts.  Well I thought they cleared because they sheared completely off.  Not the end of the world but not a good thing either.

Then while I was climbing up a hill I started hearing a thumping noise.  Naturally my heart dropped to the bottom of my boots thinking I had done something wrong in the rebuild.   Clunk got faster with my speed so I got back to level ground and had a coworker listen while I eased back and forth.   Front drive shaft is making the noise.   The double u joint thing at the transfer case output has a massive amount of play in it.  It's rebuildable but I may just order an entire new shaft.  Without proper tools replacing u joints is a massive pain I've found and I think it will be way easier to just replace the whole thing.

I also sold my fuel tank so I'm shopping  for a different one.  I can't decide on a 100gal one or the 40 gal.  $80 price difference from big one to small.  Ideally I should get the small one as it will allow me to keep my tool box lower than the bed rails which will be good when I'm pulling my camper. But I really like the idea of thousands of miles of range before refueling.  We'll see.

Speaking of cheap knives, anyone see that Rambo lookin' "Survival" knife they sell over at Harbor Freight? It's like a foot long, actually bigger than that. One day I'm in there getting something and I see that thing on sale for $7.99! Right beside it is a machete for $5.99.

So I picked up both and gave one to each of the boys. That darned Rambo knife is still perfect after a summer of hacking down limbs and trees all over the farm

I have one of those. For that price why not?

$38/each is a great price for those.

I agree with the offset and it does create a perfect spot for the spare. I'm pretty sure I could go up to a 37 and still have room for it in there.   I'll try moving it to the other side tomorow. The only thing that concerns me about that is my view out the rear view.  I have a pump for it that goes in the left side and if I move it to the right then the pump will block what little rear view I have left.

Small world, I lived in Yuma when I was young being a military brat. Even had SNOW!!!
I stayed at the Stardust resort hotel there for 3 months while training with the Marines. A pro baseball team was there as well, doing training camp getting ready for the season. I was always working out and when I'd be outside stretching people would come up to me asking for an autograph...so I signed things...Hooah, not my name!

That's hilarious.   I liked Yuma. I bought a dirt bike out there and we hit Glamis a few times.  It was the dead of summer so we had to quit riding by 10AM or you would roast.

Did a little work on the ford.

I put my aux fuel tank.  It's not ideal size but since it was close to free I have to use it.

I can't decide if I want to center the tank in the bed or if I should off set it like this pic and use the space on the side for the spare.

Any thoughts?

Thank you guys for all the ideas.

Yes it will be key to get the word out in college areas and I've been thinking about throwing mini release parties at various bars in different places where I know the owners or have a concentration of friends to help spread the word.  I'm not talking actual red carpet Type release parties but more like sponsoring the night.  Buy drinks for people who download the app, float around and see what people think etc.   The tailgating idea is awesome and I hadn't thought of that.  As is the hiring of local students to help with the leg work.  Have to figure out a way to keep them honest instead of just dumping swag at a friends house and pocketing my money.

The group message idea is my other idea for the app.  I want to have a Kukay sticker that venues can put on their door similar to Zagat, or yelp, or four square. Then people will know that this is a Kukay venue.  I'd like to incorporate a way for venues to be able to advertise through the map so people could look on the map and see what place has drink specials and a good crowd of people. This would encourage venues to advertise with us to draw a crowd in.   Going along with that I would like to set up a rating system for users to rate the venue on how well it does for meeting people.  This would also encourage venues to promote that they are a Kukay rated venue. Logistically though that is a very large project.  We would have to start our own API. Thats basically the database that pulls the venues when you go to check in.  There are several people who have APIs that you can use.  Foursquare (which we use) Google, Facebook, etc.  That would be a rather large investment in server space and time etc.  You would have to manually set up all the places similarly to how you can create a place in FB or four square.

As for tinder.  Yes we are direct competition for them.   Our goal is to take market share away from them and also to take some from Facebook as well.  And to create an entirely new market for roving social media.  Allowing users to interact in real time at whichever place they may be.   In  bars and smaller venues then it will be more of a hookup  app but if you use it at a football game or a concert then you can find people who you may never meet in person just to talk to them for the duration of the event.   We have a custom status option that people will see when they are scrolling through users. You could use that feature to set your status to "anyone have a good recipe for blah blah blah" and use the app in the grocery store.

We're going to market it more as a social media platform than pigeon hole it as a hook up app. Although it can be used quite well for that purpose.   Another advantage we see is people are always looking for the latest and greatest thing so we're hoping to be that thing.

We've patented this app and I invested a sizable chunk of money into it so now we just have to get it going.

I have to get ideas and a game plan ready for when I get laid off this winter.   My hands are kind of ties as far as getting out and doing legwork myself until I get a break from the day job that pays the bills. And unfortunately I am not in a highly populated area.

It was originally going to be a free app with a paid premium version.  You would get the map feature on the paid version.
With it taking so long that kind of fell by the wayside and it will be strictly a free app.
Revenue will come from ads to start and metadata sales.
I have future expansion ideas to generate revenue but that will be it for now.

As far as usage to turn a profit I have no idea.

It's kind of like Twitter or snap chat.  They make money without selling anything.  Sponsored and targeted ads will help.

The ultimate goal will of course be to sell the entire app.

What we need is a publicity stunt. Something to make national news and get the name out there.  I wanted to release thousands of fireflies in Times Square on a summer night.    But with the world we live in now id probably get arrested for something.

And as it turns out it's really hard to buy live fireflies in any large quantity

Two words... Eco-throttle.

Look at the EU3000 watt Honda if you need more juice for A/C and microwave, if you think you really need those things when boondocking.

Yeah spendy, buy once cry onceI say.

I'm obviously biased, so take it for what it is. But choosing Honda was the best decision I ever made for our RV'ing. So efficient and quiet.

Edit: I see the NT has similar functionality... That changes things a bit :)

I know I'm late but my work uses the EU2000s quite a bit. I know they will take being literally thrown into a pickup bed daily.  Crazy tough units.  We've done more impromptu torture tests of things than consumer reports.    Dad being a superintendent "acquired" two of these after a job with the parallel kit.  He used it in a small camper when they went out to the hills with friends.  He ended up getting an EU3000 and mounting it on the tongue of his camper. Another fantastic unit but it is pretty darn heavy.

Just my .02 in case anyone finds this and is still looking.

I figured I would ask here to get some other ideas from my normal channels.

I built an app with my friend from high school.  He came up with the idea and at the time I had the money to finance it.   We met with an app company In Austin 2.5 years ago and it was originally supposed to take 6 months to build.  2.5 years later we are finally releasing it.   It's out in Google Play and it's being reviewed by the App Store as I type this and should be available on iPhone within a week to ten days.

The premise of the app is social networking.  It's not like anything out there right now and I still feel that it is an amazing concept.

The name of the app is Kukay.  That is an ancient Mayan word for firefly.

It basically lets you avoid the downfalls of meeting people in public places. It basically allows you to say hi to someone in the venue anonymously.  Then they anonymously respond and if you happen to choose each other it opens up a dialogue box and you can text with that person through the app.

How it works is you check in to a location.  After you are checked in you can see all the other users that are checked in to that venue.   If you see someone you are interested in you can send them a "flash".  They then receive a notification  that someone in the venue is interested in them.  They then go through the same process.  They look who is checked into the venue and go down and start sending flashes to people they might be interested in.  This sends flashes to all the people they are in to.  If they happen to pick the user that sent them the flash then you make a connection and options for conversations pop up.

These conversations and flashes disappear after you leave the venue.  So it's all temporary unless you want to save the person

If you meet someone you like but you aren't sure if you want to give them your actual number you can save them to the "jar"  this allows the connection to stay active you leave the venue.  So you can put someone in your jar and be able to text with them through our app as long as they are in your jar.  Then if they get crazy or you just don't want to continue all you have to do is remove them from the jar and they disappear.

It sounds complicated but it's really not.

We also have a map

This allows you to see the number of users checked in to various venues around you.  So you can see where the odds are better to meet someone.

So it's in its infancy and we are now needing to get users.   This is worthless unless a bunch of people in the venue are using the app.

We have a press release we are going to send out to various places when he iPhone version comes out but figured I'd asking anyone had any interesting ideas.

I'm probably going to run the 3k governor springs.    Although you can run up to 4k with the 60# springs from what I've read. The heavier 150-200# springs are for 4k+ rpm racing/sled pulling.

The seat pressure I believe is around 150#

The 60# description I think is 60# over stock.

There's a couple reasons for the springs.  As Don mentioned when you start revving the engine higher the stiffer springs keep you from floating valves.
Another reason is I've read a bunch of stories of people testing factory springs after removing them and having wildly different pressures.

Well I got my question answered.   Called the place I was planning on buying the head gasket from and they recommended the stock thickness gasket.  When they clean up the head they also set the valves back to factory clearances.  So it doesn't matter if you take off the .006" or .040 the engine will not know the difference because the valves are set back the same amount.

Getting the surface machines and a 3 angle valve job on it as well.  Just bought the upper gasket set.  Ouch $330 for genuine Cummins gaskets.  Also popped for new 60# valve springs and titanium retainers.   Not entirely necessary at first but will be there if I decide to turn it up in the future.

I did mention the NVs up top and they are a valid option. Just remember if you are hanging it on a auto engine there is alot to swap.

As for EMP, I believe (Don correct me) that it destroys electronics such as chips, diodes and transistors. I think basic circuits are fine. EI: lights, starters, window motors, locks.

Ahh yes you did mention them.  Sorry. And we should probably start a thread on EMPs. Ive read everything from only taking out the power grid to taking every last thing with wires attached to it.

I'm just guessing cause I haven't looked into it but it shouldn't be to hard to convert to 4x4. Hanging the axle is easy. Reverse shackle kit and some super duty springs and you're only in 5-600 for the parts not including the axle.   Can't say for sure if the tranny is different or not but I don't think it would be. May just have to find a new housing and transfer case.   That's a lot of work though.  You can find 4x4 OBS Fords all day long for cheap. Heck I paid $3750 for my crew cab long box 4x4.   Another awesome vehicle for this is an older suburban.  I kind of wished that's what I had looked for before I bought my Ford.   Heck you could even look for a 12 valve 1st or 2nd gen dodge and not have to do a swap.  Don has laid out the perfect template for those trucks.

Lots of good options for not a lot of money for good cheap trucks.

Another thing to consider with a manual is if there is ever an EMP and worst case scenario. All electrical things are destroyed. As long as you can turn the fuel on with a 12 valve you can bump start it.   Just make sure you park on a hill when you stop it.   Get it coasting in 2nd or 3rd gear and pop the clutch and you're in business.

And along those lines. Driving a manual is becoming a lost skill.  Most of the kids these days can't drive one so even if they do try to steal it chances are they cant get it going.

I'm guessing he's in full harvest mode- first one to the elevator, makes the most $ unless he's already contracted his crop.  I'm guessing he's more of a "what the market will bear" farmer.  Not to mention that he's probably trying to catch the Pheasant Opener as well!

Mmmmm pheasant.   Does that open this early?  Thought it was 1st of November?

It was a 112 here just about a week ago, now we have clouds and a little rain.

Blythe, my old weekend hangout area was the Salton sea. Little town there called Thermal. It had the best little mexican food place you ever saw, but was it hot!

Hmm, Blythe, contract job had to be for the prison.

Actually was a pipeline. Ran from Blythe down to Yuma.  Right past that military training grounds. Chocolate mountain? Maybe?  It's been a long time since I was there.   Drove by several times and saw apaches hovering really close to the ground.

Also my first taste of illegal immigration.  Seeing the water tanks they leave in the desert so people don't die of thirst.

The Colorado river was awesome though. We covered almost every mile of it from Blythe to Havasu.

I was hoping to attract Norm to this thread.

I agree with .010 off and .010 over gasket.  But I was reading about possible valve clearance issues etc.  Wanted to make sure I didn't need anything other than the machine work and the new gasket.   I'm hoping to get the engine back next week to re assemble and paint it up.

I wanted to start a new thread on this topic because it is more of a specific question.

I pulled the head off my 6BT in preparation for building the engine up but I've scaled back my plans a bit.  I was going to O-ring it but from a cost and necessity stand point that doesn't make sense for me right now.   Since I have the head at the machine shop and they say it's .006 off I'm going to have them deck it while it's there.

Has anyone had a diesel head decked?   I'm wondering if I have them take off the .006" to make it flat what size head gasket should I get? They make Cummins gaskets in a +.010 and a +.020 size.  Does that mean I should have them take off .010"?  Or should I have them take off .006" to make it flat and then use a .010"?   Do I need to worry about the valves beeing closer to the combustion chamber chambers?

No manual tranny love?   The NV4500 and 5600 are known to perform well with the Cummins. Even with big torque numbers.  Plus they are easy to find adapters for because they were a factory option.  My ZF5 is also a good choice but that would depend on what it's going in as t wouldn't make sense to source out a ford tranny to put it into a non ford.  Clutch selection is key in a manual though.  Have to strike a balance between holding the power you have and easy engagement.  Luckily there are some top notch companies making clutches for street trucks.  South Bend Clutch and Valair are two of the best.  But it is a wear item obviously and you have to factor that into your equation.

Allisons are great but so are all the transmissions in late model diesels. The 68RFE in the various dodges I've owned has been great. As stated though they are heavy and require a bunch of electronic controls.

I think going with an older auto built up like in Square D or a manual is the best choice for simplicity and durability behind the Cummins.

I did watch a video awhile back of a dodge with an Eaton 10 speed in it.  Pretty cool but super heavy and not necessary.  You need all the gears when driving a big truck but it's overkill in a light duty truck.

Arizona sounds nice.  I did a job in 02 in Blythe California.  I saw 126 on a flying J sign out there.  I was going to work at 4 AM and my truck was regularly reading 99-100 that early in the morning.

It's turned up here though. Down right chilly this morning.   Plus we got 4.5" of rain on Tuesday so today is the first day back to work.  Now if this east coast hurricane turns my way we may be shut down longer.

Well I figured out what the fuse I pulled was for.   Glow plugs. The truck was very hard to start these past few months.   It would crank and crank and belch white smoke when it did start.   I replaced the relay shortly after I got the truck and it helped but it still started hard.   Well I think the relay went bad and was drawing current which is why the lights were staying on.  At least that's my theory.

So I set about fixing it.   I changed the relay and wired in a momentary switch so I have control of how long the glow plugs light before i start it.  Not my first choice by since I pulled the fuse to the system I couldn't get the relay to latch and thought the controller might be at fault so that's why I bypassed it.

I'm not concerned too much about it because hopefully this just has to get me by till I do the swap.   I hated to spend money on an engine that will only be used for a few more months but from what I've seen with this truck if it doesn't have a fully functioning glow plug system it's dead in the water in the cold.

So thinking along those lines I went to the parts store and got 8 new motorcraft glow plugs and swapped those out as well.

The weathers changing up here and I knew if I didn't do this now I would have wished I had at some point.

Now with a few seconds of heat from the plugs she fires off like a champ.

All in all took me about an hour to swap the plugs and relay but took me three hours diagnosing it.

Grrrrrr can't wait to have a Cummins in this thing.

My mom and sister junk jaunt every year.  I love to go when I'm able, which hasn't been very often recently.   I love your pictures.  It reminds me of home.

I'd suggest you install the Cummins almost stock if possible. I'd then tow with it and see where you feel it lacks. You may find it's not all that bad and just needs some minor tweaking.

I think you're right.  I've been leaning this way for the past few days after adding up parts costs to do what I was planning.  Tune it with the stock setup and see where it lands.   I'm still going to do the head work and upgraded bolts since I have the head off.   I'm just worried because I've never towed with an older diesel.   I've towed with some older gas burners and it was interesting to say the least. Both my 6.7s I've had pull like freight trains so I have visions of going 35 mph up a grade on the interstate. Haha

Had some fun issues wtih the Ford.  I was driving it at work last week and all of a sudden it wouldn't shut off.  I had to kill it in 5th to get it to shut off.  Started fine but wouldn't stop.  I parked it for a few days and decided to tear into it and see what was wrong and turns out it was dead as a door nail. When I put the cables on it the ABS light was on and the battery light as well.  These lights stayed on even with the ignition off so that was what was draining the battery but I had no clue what was causing it.

Well I started taking it apart and I replaced the key cylinder, which needed it anyway, and the ignition switch.  It starts and stops fine now so one of my problems was solved.  The lights staying on was weird so I started pulling fuses until I pulled one that made the lights go out to figure out what circuit the draw was coming from.  Turns out I had to pull a maxi fuse from under the hood that according to the diagram was not used anyway.  But I pulled it and the lights went out so I'll roll with that until something comes up again.

I figured I might as well start Tearing out all the hacked wiring up wiring and put it back to as close to stock as possible.   I'm also going to wire in some anti theft devices as well.

There was a hard wired trailer brake controller in there and this lovely splice job into the headlight switch.  The controller had wire nuts on it as well.  I guess the PO had something wired in that he only wanted on with the headlights.

Have you thought about going back to a stock lift pump with an electric inline pusher?   Seems to be a viable option for where your engine sits power wise.    Did you block off the stock pump?  I don't remember the specifics of your engine build.   I've read on some competition diesel sites that people have run the stock lift pump up to 585hp.   I don't think I would run it that high without some help though.   That's like people getting 450hp out of the stock HX35.  It can be done.....once or twice for a dyno run.

I'm looking at those.  From what I hear they're not a special bolt just a 12.9 metric bolt.  We could probably do it cheaper if you bought each bolt individually from fastenal or the like but this is a good price for all of them I think.

My engine guy just sent me these.

Progress.
