Think I have something wrong with me, I just keep getting more stuff!

Found a older Bridgeport Surface grinder just 10 minutes from my house, $200 could I say no? Well, NO!

Model 815 manual, but looking to make it auto (can't be that hard). Pickup on Sunday.

This is the FB picture, runs good, solid magnetic table, 2 phase (vevor VFD for under $100)

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / Used Material lift
« on: January 05, 2024, 10:27:48 PM »
Well, I got this thing today. Been looking and had one lined up that was electric but the guy sold it on me! Wanted for working on the mill, lifting things onto the truck/trailer without a hoist and be a great workstand for many things.

This is pump, not a crank so it will do. Wesco 60in rated at 1000lb in pretty good shape. Has a locking tab on the rear rolls smooth.

I looked up the wrong model and it is several inches to wide for man doors I have. (31in, need 28in) Also had this weird plate on it that was off in a minute with a grinder. Looked like there were 2 but one was removed already.

Still thinking it over, but I may narrow it a few inches. Pretty easy just cutting the legs off and pushing them in some. We will see,,,,,,,,,,,

Build Threads / Sons 1993 S15 Sonoma build.
« on: December 31, 2023, 07:48:00 PM »
Well, as stated we made a change. The 4Runner is (made a $100 on it) and found this 1993 GMC Sonoma, 4.3 6, 4L60 trans 4x4. Pretty much stock, but non running when we got it. Son always wanted a truck, I talked him into the 4Runner (was pushing for a Cherokee actually)

Interior is OK, but needs TLC. Blue/grey interior, bucket seats with little jump seats in the back. About what you would expect for a 30 year old truck really.

Body is OK, but needs TLC too. Biggest thing is the left bedside is pushed in a little, but some came out with a suction cup aleady. Besides that a few small dings, but nothing needing real bodywork. Stock 15 tires and wheels and I think and open rear with the RPO codes.

When we got it, tags were expired (2 months) and it didn't run, has a fuel leak on the TBI.

Was a chore getting it onto the trailer being a non runner. Drug up a sloped driveway to the downhill street (both were steep) The little 2500# HF winch could not do it. After I drug it up to the street, I jumped in and rolled it backwards onto the trailer (everyone was screaming at me). Ended up not getting far enough onto the trailer and with the engine in the rear the load was way off. First timed I braked it was a wild ride, so we found a flat area and pushed it forward as much as we could after turning the still loaded bucket. Was fine after that.

For those that don't know that area (most of you) there are 3 ways to Clearlake. 1 is through Napa and a pain to drive in a regular car, 2 is via hwy 101 above Santo Rosa (same road type) and the way I took is up 5 through Williams which is way better for trailers. Trip home was uneventfull after that and fuel was even 50 cents less a gallon on HWY 5, so I filled up.

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / Bridgeport Mill, rebuild
« on: November 20, 2023, 10:19:31 PM »
Not that I need more projects, but got this home today. Quite the ordeal, drop trailer, pallet jack, son and off we went.

Took about 3 hours to load/unload, drive was an hour each way. Had to take the motor off to get into my garage. Was 6 hours from picking up trailer to drop off.

Still doing research, but looks to be a late 60s, early 70s unit. 220v single phase, X,Y, Zaxis are powered, 110v.

The trailer pulled like its wheels were locked up, but it worked.

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / Arcdriod Plasma cutter
« on: September 16, 2023, 12:05:03 AM »
Well, I have been eyeing these for about a year now. Seems perfect for smaller jobs. Was almost 1/2 price when you include shipping and tax. Pretty much self contained and you can use it with CAD or CAD (cardboard assisted design) and tweak it some too.

I have a Langmiur Pro, still boxed up and need to leard CAD to use it. I bought a dedicated 60amp plasma for it, but it will work with this too.

Going to setup and mount on my 4x6 steel table with a fold out cut area. Does about 16x24, but can do larger at points.

Not going to post any video links as there are so many, but here is the websight; https://arcdroidcnc.com/

Shawn, I thought about you when I got this.

Alternative Energy / Adding more Solar
« on: August 14, 2023, 06:42:45 PM »
So with a looming $3k trueup bill I have hopped into finishing my add on solar.

My current system makes about 3k max sometimes a little over 25k a day. Problem with this system Is it was kept on the smaller size when installed (location and home type) and is not cutting it now. It faces south, but around 6pm it puts out close to nothing and there is a large tree in the front yard that limits it output during winter, spring and autumn. Tree does need trimming big time.

To remedy this some I am adding 10 more 240watt mono panels with an SMA Sunnyboy 4000watt inverter. I have had all this for a few years. Newer stuff would be better i'm sure, but I paid about 1/2 retail for the new panels and got the inverter through a friend who does solar. I also got all the mounting hardware from him at cost.

SMA has been mounted for a couple years, conduit run just wating. Still need to run wire from panels to inverter. This inverter includes a 1500watt 110ac plug if the grid goes down.

Firearms / Building a 6.5 AR platform.
« on: June 11, 2023, 01:47:38 AM »
Picked up a Bear Creek AR upper in 6.5 creedmore. Price was to good to pass up (under $300) Mixed reviews, mostly older uppers though. Right hand cocking so bench shooting is easier.

Then last week I saw Primary Arms had a blem special for long range scopes. Then they had a LE/milt discount so one found its way to me also with mount.

I have lowers and got 100 rounds for under $100 via ammo seek sent to NV. Now need a good bipod, may try an above barrel mount this time.

What happens at the ridge, stays at the ridge. Pics to follow, for some reason not getting pics from cell right now.

Build Threads / 1995 4Runner build for son.
« on: June 10, 2023, 08:36:21 PM »
Well, youngest is turning 16 this Oct. and has been eyeing toyotas. We/he just bought a 1995 4Runner, V6, auto. Needs an engine, but for $900 we can do that and knew up front.

Needs the basic TLC but for a 30 year old SUV, paint, seat covers ,etc. Options are to rebuild or swap motor, was told it was run low on oil, but runs.

Cutting my wall today, the PC circular saw quit. Give it its due, it has to be well over 10 years old.

Ran out and got a Dewalt 20v XR unit. Brushless motor, alum. pan. Hopefully it has little more power being brushless. I like the vacuum attachment too.

What are you building? / Moving the wall around and new floors
« on: March 21, 2023, 12:18:15 AM »
When I added to the house after the fire, they added a shear wall right in the middle of the living room Has always driven me nuts. Right now it holds the TV.

When this happened I planned ahead some and added a post for a beam that was to be the accent for the addition. I poured a 3x3x3 footing and this post holds up the main beam. This was cut to match the accent beam, then tied together with 2inch angle and lags from above.(I redid the roof then too)

Now 15 years later, retired and the temp carpet looking like garbage (gotta love pets), we are going for new flooring. But first the wall needs to be removed without loosing the "shear".

So doing the research I found Simpson makes a OSB strongwall that replaces the 6 ft wall I have now. 1 ft replaces 4 ft, I am going with 2ft for the 6ft wall.

At this time the footing is secure with a 6x6 post up to another strong tie where it meets the beams. Few bolts to go but solid!

New strong wall goes along the original foundation left from the addition of this side of the house. The addition is 14x35 and 6ft shear is dead center of where the old outside wall was.

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / Connecticut Finger/Pan Brake
« on: January 26, 2023, 09:14:48 PM »
Picked this up Wednesday about 100 miles north. 48 inch Connecticut, 22ga. See similar going for a 1000, new way more and this is not chinese!

In good shape with stand $450. Had furniture casters on it that broke, but he threw in a new set of 4in steel casters worth at least $60. They were too big but I took em.

Planned on throwing the frame up top but didn't quite work, so we cut it and it all fit easy. Got new 2.5 castors at ACE.

My master seems to be going out on the DMax. Almost could not get out of park, then I mashed the pedal, it all works fine, brakes feel good otherwise. Did the Boost a couple years ago so doing the master now and bleeding all the fluid for new (just 16 years old)

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / Langmuir Crossfire Pro
« on: November 29, 2022, 07:49:33 PM »
Well, with all the black friday deals I ordered a Langmuir Pro CNC plasma table (3x4ft) I had ordered one prior but cancelled.

https://www.langmuirsystems.com/pro

The sale included the THC and limit switches which many recommend for list price. I added the laptop tray.

Watching many YT reviews, I opted for a new budget plasma cutter.  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09JZW9VJ3/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 that is designed for CNC Plasma tables and 1/2 the price of the Langmuir units.

My current plasma will work, but needs to be rewired and has a little less power.

Will probably get a dedicated laptop with a touchscreen. I have 3 that are 5-10 years old and work fine, but touchscreen is the way to go for this.

I got notice today that first shipment is on the way already. Need to do some cleaning to make room. This will not be a right now project, but should be this winter. As you all know I have no other projects going,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

They have a new motto;

Lets Go Brandon!

OK, here we go on another smaller project. I picked up a 2014 Tahoe, former BLM vehicle (the real BLM)

129k miles, just ready to click over the 130. No 3rd row, no center console (already found some) Oil and tranny fluid looked good.

5.3ltr Vortec, 6sp tranny, 2 keys/remotes with 8.6in rear, 7100 gvw. Almost new Nitto 33-75/17s on stock rims. Shakes a tad at speed so going to check the balance.

More picks to follow but here is the build sheet. It is a "special use LE" vehicle, thinking a 48 state. Already smogged and Reg in Kali now (for now)

Hide Site / Raptor Ridge, the build.
« on: August 29, 2022, 11:42:40 PM »
Well, since I really have a place to build now, building "MAYBE" on the way I have decided to start a new thread.

Hoping the building is on tract per Great Western???  Got a call from the garage door people saying my doors are in ready for delivery. I set it up to deliver them here and will load them on the trailer, taking them up on my terms. Otherwise they wanted to deliver mid week at the Ridge, but they think its in Sparks (close) not 25 miles north in the foothills.

First thread; http://real-man-truckworks-and-survival.com/index.php?topic=3981.1425

Working on the Exc so I can get the foundation going this year hopefully.

16
Both just sit for the most part.

Trailer is cool, does the tree job once a year and sits. To tall for most jobs is why I got the lower Karavan. Figure I can get about 2k for it.

El Camino, 1987 is the same. Great backup car, always runs but the battery drains if now disconnected. I am the second owner, no wrecks besides a parking rash and garage fire burns. Around 500k but burns no oil (305), 3rd tranny, BGN rear posi rear. Have a 5.3/4L60 ready for it with everything, harness, SSBC 4 disc brake kit, tubular front L/UCA and LT1 spindles. LT1/16 rims and 225 Kumos. IROC mirrors and a shell. Seeing these on FB for 4-5k , stock, 10K+ for cherry. Also have a new cowl induction hood and the air dam is aftermarket.

I think starting at 10K is a good idea. Picture below was on a calender.

General Vehicle Related Discussion / Tahoe for a DD?
« on: May 09, 2022, 10:41:36 PM »
Guys, looking for a DD and thinking a used Chevy Tahoe will fit the bill.  I like the 2007-15. 5.3, 4L60/65, 4x4, no sun roof and not black are about my only "needs". My Dmax is great, but 238k miles and want to use it more for towing with the miles on it.

My price range is in the 10K area, lower the mileage the better. 150k is median, some way higher. I think the "tow package" includes the 9.5 rear, but not sure. Would probably lift a hair for 33/32s on it with light towing. The 5.3 is solid as is the 4L60. Don't really need the 3rd row and the fold down 2nd gives me lots of room.

Think I am in the ballpark but any feedback? Little pic of the body style, just like it.

(darn mod moved to the right place)

Construction and heavy equipment / Cat 305cr Excavator
« on: March 02, 2022, 10:59:34 PM »
Well, I did it again and got another excavator. This time a Cat 305cr, 11k machine, 48hp with a full cab (well the main shell is there) Besides being a heavier machine (4k), it is 1.5' wider and tracts go all the way past the swing, way more stable for my use. Tracks seem in great shape.

Do not want another full project (fluid change) but a few things need to be done. Mitsubishi engine looks to has a new hydraulic pump, 7200 hours, 24in bucket (seen better days) plumed for a thumb and has the ram.  No blowby seen but a tad rough and a wet fuel pump (like the bobcat), hopefully just fittings.

Cab door and front window are missing. Rear left engine/cooling cover gone, crack in ram mount for boom (discovered after I bought it) Stick boom drips (guess its time to learn how to rebuild em) Boom swing sticks, cab rotates fine. Both heater and AC are gone, but setup for both. Heater should be pretty easy, look at the A/C for sure. Has speakers but no radio?

Right now I am looking for a door, front window and may have already found another 24" bucket with kubota quick coupler and adapter. Also a thumb is a must. I figured this into the price, got it down a little and will pickup on Sunday. I can just carry it on my trailer fudging a touch. Don't plane on hauling it around. Just here for a cleanup, then up to the Ridge for good. Yes, it will get paint.

I figure I can sell the bobcat well over what I paid in this market, making this a $$$ wash. Few days will tell, have already been asked about selling it several times.

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / Cheap hand held compressor
« on: December 25, 2021, 03:57:49 PM »
Yes it is cheap, but I had the batteries for it. Still have several Ryobi tools and batteries are cheap!

Surprised how much use I get out of this for the cars, bikes and such. Pressure indicator on back and now family will check pressures on their own since they don't have to fire the big boys.

Think most of the "brands" have em too, but this was under $40

General Maintenance, How to/DIY projects / Excavator Torn Track repair
« on: December 14, 2021, 11:24:12 PM »
Even though I have been posting the fluid change on my 2001 Bobcat 331-D here; http://real-man-truckworks-and-survival.com/index.php?topic=3981.1150  in my Ridge thread. Thought I would post the track repair here and might be a part 2.

Was looking for a way to repair a tear I had in 1 track. Wasn't terrible on the outside but don't want it to get worse. If this stuff works, I have another tear near the center drive area to try it on. Found this on youtube; https://youtu.be/v8j-fD-4NsM and when I called the company, they suggested this; https://products.pangindustrial.com/product/pangit-ab-compound-2-lb-set/ along with their rubber cement, which I purchased.

After it arrived I waited a few days to use it as it has been raining. Today was nice and I got it warmed up inside. Was told with nice weather, 2-3 day sure is the norm. Drilled out the end of the tear as recommended and applied the glue and brought out the heater to warm up.

Shops Garages and Barns / New to me workbench and other stuff
« on: December 06, 2021, 08:45:40 PM »
Been looking for a metal workbench for home. Got the big one at the Ridge but wanted something a smaller and having wheels would be cool.

So after looking on FB and CL for a month or so, one came up about an hour away. Was in the Hills above Placerville.

People are selling these things for what they cost today. 5-600 was very common for something around 4ft square.

This came up at 175, offered 150 and they accepted. Wheels, shelf, even an older vise that works well. Was told it came from the water dept there and had a SS top and some angle iron as a drain. Rolls like a dream and the wheels even have locks.

Then the fun began as in backing into the drive. It was off single lane country road (off HWY 49). I moved 2 railroad ties and several rocks they had placed to stop turn arounds. Gate was just 12ft wide, 90* to the road. It took about 20 minutes backing the deckover in with the Dmax and I bent 1 post just a tad (I repaired before I left)

Since I have no winch on the trailer yet I had to use the tie downs as a come alongs. A good hour later I pulled out glad it was done.

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / Parts washer?
« on: April 16, 2021, 05:36:11 PM »
To anyone, but hoping Shawn or Ken have an idea here.

Looking for a self agitating parts washer. I have the normal tub, but the old shop I worked in had a air powered washer in a 5gal bucket.

Something bigger is fine too, but the really big ones I see are engine block size, need 3ph and are still 1K used!

Good Ol Ka has a 10 day wait but I wanted this;

https://www.sportsmans.com/shooting-gear-gun-supplies/shotguns/weatherby-sa-459-turkey-12-gauge-3in-black-semi-automatic-shotgun-22in/p/1653105

Wandered into Sprotsman Warehouse not really wanting a certain shotgun, but had been thinking about one. Saw the above, felt great, under $400 with points and discount so I got the last one they had. Also found out they have just been acquired by Bass Prop shops.

I am playing with some P o l y 8 0 items too, based around something called a 19. I won't post pics anymore with all this crap going on. Well not until I am based in NV.

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / New Table for shop
« on: January 05, 2021, 10:41:16 PM »
So I picked up the table on Sun. Was interesting as the skid we used could only lift 1 end. Ending up using car dollies and then sliding it up onto my trailer on wood strips that would glide on the dirt. The skid was on 2 wheels much of the time.

Got it over to the storage area, will need to rust coat it since it will be left outside for the next few months.

The top is .750, vs the 5/8 it looked like, I like! Looks pretty flat, but it has a end down just a little. Not bad really but getting it in place will tell for sure. Worked out the weight, it is just over 2200lbs.

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / Multi Process Welder options
« on: November 26, 2020, 02:16:14 AM »
Well I gave my little HF 170 mig to my neighbor up at the ridge. He has used it several times and like it and he has done lots of work for me up there.

So I am looking for a new machine, multi process that will not break the bank. I like Miller and Lincoln, but they are double the price.

So far Everlast, Weldpro and Forney in searches. Big thing is AC Tig so I can play. All seem to have good reviews and not really in a hurry.

I could look for a used machine, but nothing really coming up. Plus used name brand are more than those listed new.

So what ideas do you guys have? Anyone use the machines listed?

Build Threads / Inglewood Allison Trans Rebuild "Roadtrip"
« on: November 14, 2020, 05:30:18 PM »
Linked this to my Dmax thread but thought this deserved its own.

I now have 205k on the 2006 Dmax that has been my daily driver since new. Still runs great, but the tune needs addressing. I have limped the tranny a couple times and sometimes it slips/chatters pulling in the Sierras. I have little to complain about really. But I also had the infamous pump rump leak.

After reading about how people have used Inglewood Transmission (MikeL) https://inglewoodtransmission.com/jm1/  in other forums and feedback from BigDave here, I bit the bullet, took the roadtrip and had it done. Figured why pay the same local for who knows what build, or get a prebuilt tranny and deal with the swap when I get a known outcome for a $100 of fuel?

It was arranged to do it on a Friday after we talked a couple times to verify parts and such. So I made the 6 hour drive south and was there before it opened at 0800. Mike showed up around 0630 as I tried to grab a little sleep out front. But trains, homeless and nerves would not allow me any shuteye.

Went in just after 0700, introduced myself and we hit it right off. He was scanning the web for election news and would be a happy addition here!

What are you building? / Tackling the widow maker sidewalk.
« on: September 13, 2020, 07:31:08 PM »
As many of you know the power company ran all new gas lines a few months back. In that they replaced a pad by my meter and at my request made it longer for my compressor, causing a little step where the gate was. Fast forward to today I finally measured out for the compressor and found I will need to trim about a 1x2' section. This gives me a nice little ramp where the new 40" gate will be. Plus I can park the manlift over there for now.

So here is where I am starting. Using my ol HF 7" grinder with a masonry blade. After cutting around the edge I decided to use water. Made a little mess, but no dust and it cut way better.

D.O.T. / Actual Covid deaths
« on: August 31, 2020, 05:05:19 PM »
CDC recently updated the real death rate via the so called covid. It is really just 6% of what is being reported.

Most of the deaths (which do happen on their own everyday) have "other" issues, averaging 2.6 underlying factors.

Basically, real "covid only" deaths are just a little over 9000, not the 170k number being thrown around so much.

As a note, I am in the yellow zone myself, being overweight and diabetic. Older but not way up there and in overall good health otherwise.

Even a big lib paper (Sacramento Bee) https://www.sacbee.com/news/coronavirus/article245382320.html

CDC website backs all this up, but you need to dig in the stats.

« on: March 29, 2020, 03:48:10 PM »
Well, cooked my Porter Cable hammer drill drilling one 5/8in hole in the garage floor.

Looks like the PC tools are not holding up well, I mean 1 flipping hole?

Since I started going dewalt at the ridge, I got a couple XR recon sets today for a killer price. Will post when received.

Also picked up a 12in chain saw for up there. $150 and 2 off brand 6 amp batteries for $45.

Sleepy cat approved.

35
Well, as most of you know I sold the Maxxd 22ft trailer and bought a new PJ dump trailer. It just fits my needs better with the dump and being a bedover I get most of the same versatility as the 22ft, just in a shorter length, just 14ft. Now I was thinking a 16ft, but no one had them within reason.

I have scattered posts around on this showing a few mods, but overall it is built great. I think some details could have been addressed like cleaning up a few welds, license plate mount and tarp setup. So I will cover here what I am doing to it.

First a few pics when I picked it up.

Build Threads / Gehl Skid Steer AKA; "DUG"
« on: December 08, 2019, 09:47:31 PM »
OK, as promised a build of the Gehl with a name that pup option.

So I wasn't really looking but was in the market for another bucket and came across this Gehl skid steer about 2 miles from me. 80hp Duetz turbo diesel, runs great.

Just 1450hrs and except for paint, seat and tires it was a nice looking machine. Plus it has a nice toothed bucket for al the digging coming up. Plus the zero turn will come in handy with many things (finding that a challenge with the Kubota)

Supposed to pick up Monday, but my leave there until I get new tires for it. Rears aren't bad, front terrible. Foam filled but doubt I need that were I am. I can get (4) 12-16.5 tires for under $600 shipped but may get with rims as a swap nearby for a few hundred more. Plus cutting the foam tires off does not thrill me.

Besides that a good service (oil never changed, says 05' on Hyd filter) and clean up the wiring which works fine, but some hanging.

New seat (thinking suspension) and LED lights front rear with BU Camera.

Now onto a few pics for the name that pup fun. Base for the paint will be tan to blend with where is going with a thin blue line some (suggested and I like!)

Tech/Electronics / Prusa 3D printer fun
« on: December 04, 2019, 09:15:56 PM »
So, had a couple pics in the WDYDT forum but figure this fits here too.

I just got a 3D printer, the Prusa I3 MK3S. Recommended by a few people and forums.

So I started with a couple simple things that came with the printer. Plus the filament included is not the best for quality, but easy to use.

Printed out a couple battery holders for the 20v tools I have, both Dewalt and Porter Cable.

SO far so good;

Firearms / Another New Rifle thread,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Well, after following the last thread I am now in the market for a rifle in 338 lapua. I have a 7mm, but have wanted something with more range and I found there is a gun club up near my property with a 1000yd range.

I did find a used Sako TRG-42, but being a long distance transfer with a used rifle I have found the regs here are a bare with fees around $200. It was under 3k, about 500 rounds through it with a batch of reloading gear with it.

So looking for advice, budget not unlimited, trying to balance out value. I will reload for it, but start with factory loads.

Scopes would be nice too, been looking at Vortex Viper 4-25 with 2nd focal plane.

With that, I have seen the Savage 110s which are OK, great prices too. Then there are the Armalite, Weatherby

Today I saw both the Ruger Precision Rifle and the Christensen. Liked the Ruger, Chris seems a little light with CF barrel.

OK shoot!!

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / Combo welder/plasma/tig
« on: May 27, 2019, 03:05:49 PM »
Guys, thinking about getting something for the property that is versatile and cost effective. Name brands are double the price easy and want to be able to mig/stick and try Tig. Plus a plasma is the only way for cutting even with the need for air. I have brands at home now.

Liking what I read about the new titanium multi use units from HF. Either the 170 or 200 unit, both are 110/220 which my gen's will handle. Then take the savings and get a cheapo plasma cutter, which are well under $200 now.

So for around $800 I get it all. Throw a small compressor I need to get anyway and am set for up there.

Thoughts?

Build Threads / JR's Tractor n trailer thread
« on: May 22, 2019, 09:52:05 PM »
Well, with the land comes other things, namely the Kubota tractor and the Maxx'd trailer. Not heading up for a few weeks with scouts and holidays.

Trailer works great, tows great and handles whatever I have put on it so far. It does need removable sides and a storage box for all the tow goodies. Also going to add a 6k winch I have laying around for good measure. Plan on a couple shipping containers which will need moving once or twice. Hydro solenoid got stuck getting the Kubota, but a couple wraps fixed that.

Tractor needs a little more TLC, looks like it was near the ocean for a while. Lights need work, general maintenance and the ROP will be modified. It needs to fold down to fit into storage vs getting HC containers that are double the price.

Plopped the bucket off by the trailers and parked it by the Polaris getting it of the neighbors yard who just moved out (of course I had their blessing)

Ordered a set of quick release pallet forks from Titan and will order a will a weld on thumb tomorrow. They have a great point system giving me $25 in points for the forks, and the prices are lower than Ebay, ship free. Getting the mechanical thumb for now, will add hydro later. Kubota is setup for a thumb, but it has a quick attach bucket, so a Kubota thumb is out (and crazy $$$) Already got the box/blade for it, left it on the trailer in the storage yard.

Quad vs UTV. What do some of you guys have, why one over the other. I need something and I keep bouncing back and forth on what I want.

I think a quad would allow more access and still carry what I need. If so, what engine size? EFI is a must and thinking 500ccor more.

UTV sounds fun, but you almost need a regular road for them.

Budget I around 4k, used for sure.

As you can see I changed the name since I got a 2008 Ranger.

Hide Site / My New Land "Raptor Ridge"
« on: April 07, 2019, 10:22:59 PM »
I have been looking on/off for several years in the Reno area for land. I need to get out of Ca and all the things they keep doing and telling me I can do. Taxes and cost of living is another reason. I retired a few years back and this has been something I wanted for a long time.

My parameters are 2-3 hours driving time so day trips or working weekends don't kill me. Reasonable 12 month access and no HOA. No dirt plots or on a main road.

Dirt is going for nothing, like 5k for 20 acres, nicer lots are going for 1-2k/acre+, real nice is like buying in Ca, nuts and they had HOAs!

Talked to several real estate agents who pointed me to the Palomino Valley area north of Sparks. I had been looking around Carson/Mindenville/Dayton, but prices were nuts and much of it was dirt! The area looked OK about 20 min north of Sparks. Plus it had all the shopping you could want within 20 minutes driving.

I had set my mind to 20+ acres and started searching al the land sites. Most lots were around 40 acres. Some were way out and way up high, others were low in the valley but over priced since it was "horse" land. Several caught my eye, but you really don't know until you look.

I searched and found about 10 lots to look at this weekend and was not thrilled by any. They were OK, but either to far our, up high or had terrible access.
This was my second time up there feeling it out. Talked to a couple owners up there that loved it, asked about wells and the POA (basically a road maint. agreement)

While up on 1 of the higher lots I looked down and saw an area that looked pretty nice. I figured what the heck, lets go look. Saw a few lots with real estate signs, but most were lots right on the road or with houses (out of budget) and I drove a "for sale by owner sign" and thought what the heck. Called and asked about the lot. It was 52 acres for just under 2K per. He tells me where it is and I go up. About 10 minutes later he shows up points out where it really is and has the maps to go with it, lot right next store was just purchased.

So with that I walked around really seeing what it was. With what I had seen I really liked this. Rolling mountain area desert with plenty of vegetation, no real trees though. Power right to the edge and the road stopped there too. Couple houses on the next ridge with good roads and the road ends at power poll.

Called the guy back, we met, I made an cash offer and cut a deal well under the 2K per acre. Left a small deposit and and supposed to sign in a week.

52 Acres, power, no water or septic. Only real issue is water which I will haul in for awhile. Wells I am told are going 600 ft to the tune of 20-30k. Septic I can do.

Now a day later and I still fell really good about it. Washoe has some great mapping with dead on lat/long GPS. Kids and wife like the info too, win/win

Couldn't get far back enough for full pics but here are some teasers. Look at Sparks, Pyramid Lake, hwy 445 and 443, place and X over that and you are close. Well as close I will put here

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Ca DMV harrasment
« on: February 16, 2019, 04:44:17 PM »
So about a year ago I transferred my mothers camry over to me for insurance as she could no longer drive.

When I transferred it, they gave me new Ca plates, which I don't understand and I turned in the old plates.

Over the last year I have gotten several letter to pay the old registration from DMV. Now I get a demand letter from DMV to pay, who has turned it over the tax board for collection with threats of wage garnishment, revoking state license's, property and bank liens.

All this over a car registration that was transferred? This state is getting so bad I may just buy a peice of dirt to get out of here.

Rant over for now, but possibly to be cont,,,,,,,,,,

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / New Chevy/Toyota??
« on: February 07, 2019, 09:35:32 PM »
So a month or so ago I saw a pic of the new chevy and thought it looked a little like the Toyota Tundra.

Well, I saw one in person today, a 1500. I really thought it was a Tundra until I saw chevy across the back. I mean mirror image hense the grill a little.

Then the price tag, 56k msrp

No wonder GM is laying off thousands.

Well, I added the JDM NX LED bulbs to my Dmax and so far I really like them. In fact I just ordered the same bulbs for the high beams.

Now 2 setbacks, my "all on" stopped working when I put in the LEDs?? Maybe the relay, just haven't checked. What is the mod with the diode for all on again in the fusebox? That or the pc board.

Still in the stock housings too. Is there something better or stock housings the beast??

What are you building? / Property thoughts, advice
« on: January 01, 2019, 10:40:03 PM »
May as well get going on this as so much is flying through my skull I need more to muddy it up. I have been thinking of some land for some time now and now it should come to pass.

Looking at getting 20+ acres (hopefully more) OOS (out of state). This may or may not turn into a permanente residence depending on,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Want it backed/sided to open/blm land so as not surrounded and no HOAs with easy to handle building regs. I am looking south of the Reno area, which allows decent access from several highways in about 3 hours. I budget in mind, but a little flexible depending on the parcel. I do not want a plod of dirt in the middle of more dirt!

Not really worried about power/water or structures for now, the right property is the thing first. I already have ideas for storage (shipping cont) and living (24ft TH). Tractor and HD trailer for sure
