Nate, if you have a better place please move this thread……
Nate has been waiting for this one I think…..
I ordered these boots a few months ago. I’ve read countless reviews and after being fitted by a guy at a remote independent seller whose crayon profile of my feet wasn’t second grade level I initially wasn’t sure I ordered what I needed. Fast forward a couple months and I found myself in Spokane home of Nicks boots an hour early to pickup my daughter from the airport so I stopped by. I was then able to actually try on a set. Extremely impressed btw.
So these showed up last week while I was out of state working. Had a few minutes this evening and unpackaged them. Going to start break in tomorrow and will give updates as I progress with these.

Exactly? I can’t recall, I think they were under $550 out the door w/ delivery though.
I prefaced this in another post but I’ve been buying 2-3 sets annually of $200-$250 boots. My thought was if I can get a year out of these or more I’m ahead plus these can be rebuilt. So if I like them I’ll be ordering a second set to keep as spares if and when the first need some love.
I’ll state as well that the older I get there are things I’ll spend good money on. For instance a great mattress, I like nice socks and a set of good fitting boots are a must. Boots that don’t fit right make a work day awful.

All good reasons why I’m in the same boat. I hate wasting money on crap boots and watched nicks and whites and JK boots a long while

A few of the Instagram/ YouTube guys I watch / follow have went the Nicks route. One guy in particular who is a very frugal guy my age. I mean he shops goodwill and yard sales for literally everything and drives 20-30 year old trucks as DD. He was sponsored his first set which he made a video of and readily admitted. Six months later he bought a second set and stated it was with his own money and it was rare he would buy new anything. He sold me honestly.

Nate, nothing special in regards to heel or sole. I have a slightly narrow foot in proportion to length. I normally wear a 14 but these Nicks fit a size 1/2 short typically. So these are 13.5 / regular width and I do have have a bit of an arch but every time I try to wear arch supports my feet end up hurting so I left those out and went with standard arch.

So I realize the break in is tedious (80-100hrs) however, trying to get these on was a workout in its own right. The left and my shorter foot it went on as expected. My right however was another story. It took me about twenty minutes to get it on and that was w/o a sock. I then pulled it off and went and found a tennis shoe type sock which was thin and well used. I was then after several attempts able to get it on. I wore the boots for a couple hours outside moving logs around the property. When I came in I was able to get both off easier than they went on. I then ordered a long shoe horn for boots, maybe that will help until these get broken in properly.

Have you ever tried breaking in wet boots?
Some say soaking them in warm water then lacing them on help
Not sure if nicks gave ya any suggestions either.
Iv use healthy amounts of shoe oil to break in boots with good success.

Nicks doesn’t recommend oil or their salve until break in is complete. I did email them about it. I’ll update once I hear back from them. I’ve run into a similar issue on cowboy boots before, my foot is so long they don’t give me enough room between tongue area and heal for foot to slide in.
-
First, my apologies for pics of my feet w/o any warning. Here again it’s late in the day so you should have all had a few cups of coffee so man up already!

Ok, so 2 hours yesterday with short well worn sock on right foot. This morning I found a pair of well worn calf height socks and started with right foot. Within five minutes I had it on w/o a shoe horn for boots as it hasn’t arrived yet. Picture above is after 8 hours. My right foot is not cut, that’s just a mark where the leather was tight against the upper portion of my foot all day.
Nicks responded, they want to exchange for a wider set of boots. I have a narrow foot and the width (at the bottom is not the issue nor is the left foot or boot imo). I’ve had wider shoes in the past and an E is too wide, I’m a D in every shoe I’ve ever worn and in an E my foot will shift side to side which is no good.
So this picture was taken and sent with an explanation and asking if they keep foot profiles for future orders and if they can add material over the top of my foot for next order on the right boot? I mean I’m paying for custom so you think that means they can make them custom???
With that stated, I think or believe these will break in. They should be the experts so we’ll see

Well, I’ve worked in them all day and doing various tasks they feel as if they are in fact loosening up in that regard. I hate lunges so we’ll skip that exercise for now! If they don’t loosen up shortly I won’t have any hair left on them!

Ok, Ken’s not wanting to play…….
So Nicks reached out late this morning. Thanked me for pictures of my manly feet and now they apparently know what to do. They stated that they have a way to stretch them across that upper section. I responded immediately and asked how we go about this? So hopefully they let me know how to return these tomorrow to get fixed.

I’m returning the boots and they have a way to mechanically stretch them a size. So I’m paying to ship to them and they will then pay to ship back after rework.

Interesting.
What do your feet look like now?

Healing well on right foot, it was tough the following day getting my slip on ariat steel toe boots on. Each day has gotten a bit easier in that regard. The left foot the following day was fine.

Received a message that Nucks received boots day after I shipped them. I do not see any work being done on them yet when I log into my account. I’m going to give them a full week then start hounding them.
-
Nicks shipped the boots back yesterday and I received them today. I tried them on and they both fit with normal effort to get them on. There was zero rubbing on the right foot now. Both seemed to be wider at the bottom too so I’ll update that after break in process.
-
Sounds like they are working with you to provide a well fitting pair of boots.
-
Let’s hope, fingers crossed
-
Got the boots back about the time it was wet and muddy here. You’re not supposed to treat them until 100 hours. With the shop builds etc going on I decided to sit them on a shelf. Summer came and is now winding down. It’s cool in the mornings with a high in mid 80’s at most so I’ve resorted to wearing jeans again instead of hippy shorts. As it is I’ve started to continue the break in process. Just turned the 50 hour mark and after a couple warmer days with these on for 4-6 hours they are starting to stretch and conform a bit. Nothing extraordinary to report although the right boot is starting to go on and off a little easier every time.
-
Give us a few pics of them please

Those look like an old school pair of recruit boots .... just a heck of a lot more heavy duty.
-
They definitely do not skimp on material. You feel very stable in these, even as they are starting to break in, it’s in appropriate places. Ankles feel extremely solid with good footing. At present time about 6 hours is all I want in them. Once I get to 100 hour mark I’ll clean and treat them. Put another 5 hours on them this morning.

Back in my day in the Armee, when we wanted a super stable boot, we went to Danner Yukon boots. I still have my 1990s set in my closet today. I remember baking them at low temp with snow seal thickly applied, and I do not ever recall getting my feet wet from stream crossings or anything else.
-
Apparently the reason these will last 2 years is it will take you that long to break them in…lol

Funny, possibly quite true. I’d agree with the move and construction I’m not using my footwear as normal right now being that I’m not building axle assemblies much atm.
