Gehl Skid Steer AKA; "DUG"
« on: December 08, 2019, 09:47:31 PM »
OK, as promised a build of the Gehl with a name that pup option.

So I wasn't really looking but was in the market for another bucket and came across this Gehl skid steer about 2 miles from me. 80hp Duetz turbo diesel, runs great.

Just 1450hrs and except for paint, seat and tires it was a nice looking machine. Plus it has a nice toothed bucket for al the digging coming up. Plus the zero turn will come in handy with many things (finding that a challenge with the Kubota)

Supposed to pick up Monday, but my leave there until I get new tires for it. Rears aren't bad, front terrible. Foam filled but doubt I need that were I am. I can get (4) 12-16.5 tires for under $600 shipped but may get with rims as a swap nearby for a few hundred more. Plus cutting the foam tires off does not thrill me.

Besides that a good service (oil never changed, says 05' on Hyd filter) and clean up the wiring which works fine, but some hanging.

New seat (thinking suspension) and LED lights front rear with BU Camera.

Now onto a few pics for the name that pup fun. Base for the paint will be tan to blend with where is going with a thin blue line some (suggested and I like!)

If the tires are foam filled you run them until they are slicks then toss the rim and all. Anyway thats what the guys around here do.

60 HP?

And, I think I'd agree with the suggestion for tracks, considerin' you are buildin' in a big sand trap.

My name suggestion remains, "CHIPS" California Highway industrial patrol shooters, or something like that

Ya I know you were not a state police guy, but a county deputy, but the name goes back to police in the california. Anyway, that's my suggestion.

Thought they recycled the foam so there is less waist/fill?

Looking at tires with wheels, didn't savor cutting old tire off.

Pretty sure just going with air tires and puncture sealant for my needs.

Well lets just say they might accidentally be placed in close proximity to a bon fire.  Then the rims get hauled in for scrap iron.

So, any closer to a name?

Could go with a friendly guy name, like joe

Then you could say, "Wait a minute, let me go get joe"

The rest of us would wonder if you were going for quoffee, some guy named joe, or the skidder

See how that works?

I’ve never felt the urge to name equipment.  But I tend to use names to poke fun at others or myself.   Like my Redneck license plate even if others use it pejoratively.

So I’d be likely to use “piggy” “donut” 10-16, code 3, BOLO, DID etc

Or something like Scooby....

Tex.  I have a long standing no name policy.   Lots of my coworkers name ( even sticker them) with thing like Betty the work can or WhiteyMCford on the 2x4 work/shop truck and so forth.  Never felt the need to name anything like that

None of my vehicles have a name.

My old red dog on the other hand has about six different names depending on her attitude or lack there of at that particular moment.

Tires are Carlisle Ultra Guard in 12-16.5. Not the cheapest but much better reviews than the cheap tires.

Basically a brand I have heard of and the deepest tread.

Looking at this base and still working on the seat. Figure between this and aired tires it should be easier on my old back.

I kinda like that. Dug for short.

Got a bud who works Const and we ran over and brought it home today. Ran great but controls need tweaking. Held full left and had to steer with right for any speed and the darn flat spot on the left front was interesting.

Needs lights and a BU camera. Well monitor as I have several cameras.

Raising the seat will be great as I am a little cramped in there and a little susp will help too. Now I can lift the cab and see the pattern.

No tires until next week, so I have a week to get these off the rims.

Hey Jr, if the tracking is off you may be able to adjust it at the pump linkage. it sucks trying to go straight and having to feather the lagging side.

There is an arm adjustment under the floor, think that will do it. 1 bucket line leaks, will replace both.

Biggest thing is the service, tires and seat. Like to run hyd lines on the boom too.

I like ""Dug", think that'll work fine.

Trying to get some info for this I was told by Gehl to contact the local dealer, about 20 miles away, 1 in Reno too.

Found out it is a 1998 model, made from 99-04 from other info.

Label on the inside has the filter numbers, score there.

Used the sawsall on one tire seeing what I am in for with changing these tires that will be here Monday.

Surprised it seems to cut like butter. Even using the 20v I cut around about 1/2 the center in about 5 minutes.

So 3 of the 4 tires showed up today. I really like these tires and the tread is nice and deep.

Need new struts for the cab lift and engine cover, but so far the AVM numbers don't crossover from my searches.

Yea, so I wonder just how long tires last on a "Skid" steer?

I guess it depends on what surface you use them on

The tracks on my machine are getting chewed up...But my babying my equipment, I can't see why

Maybe it was used by an asphalt paving company, on asphalt.
..or, like a lot of equipment around here, the hours aren't accurate because of tampering.

(I just described my mini x with a worn out bucket at 1800 hrs)

So far they look OK. Needs a good lube for sure.

Raised the cab and its a little messier on the left drive motor than is normal. Hopefully just a hose end, needs a few replaced anyway.

Got the Dmax going so have some time for it now.

Now that the rain has stopped today, I can get back on this some.

All the tires came in but the mounting past is missing. Said it was delivered yesterday but not here or the neighbors.

Then as I am typing this I get a knock from a guy 8 house down where it as delivered, not the first time as his house number and mine share numbers in a diff order.

Got the first tire off tonight, not bad at all really. The 20v sawsall did OK, but broke out the 110v Craftsman and boom, 5 minutes and it was off, another 5 for the foam donut (heavy cuss).Cut around the center, just off each bead and that was it. Using the new Diablo Carbide blades, worth every penny!

New tires bars worked great, didn't even need any jiz on them (not much left really). What got me is they were like soft rubber with no cords at all.

Spent another 1/2hr or so scaping the foam off the rim, then wire brushed it all. Threw a coat of rustolium on the bead area for mounting tomorrow.

Not even really that messy. Easy to throw the tires away too in parts. Probably foam to in time.

With that foam the tires are heavy though.

About the best I found was $110 each, so for an hour of labor I am good. Believe me, I thought that way too.

So after about 2 hours with a pressure washer it looks pretty good inside. Lots of gunk on the bottom (20 years?) that has no drain hole, but there is a skid plate that I can remove. Think it will get a drain hole while out.

Still needs some TLC and some wires cleaned up. Biggest thing there is an little elec. box hanging loose that controls the hydraulic mixes. Think I have it figured out, but here is a pic. Think it mounts to those holes under the seat.

Still trying to match the color for the paint. Nothing in cans, khaki is close though for now. 1st rim is painted and had to buy new valves since the pack I got are MIA.

Next is I want to mount a tow ring on the back. Thinking about just a good ol weld on D ring or an eye for a D ring. What do you guys think?

Gas struts are needed too. Rear is easy to lift but would be nice if it stayed up. Just a 12" ram with 5/16 ball ends, but the factory AVM numbers don't interchange.

Cab struts are gone too. I can lift it, but it is like doing a free press. They are AVM numbers too, but probably run $100 each.

Just ordered light bar for the front and LED bulbs for the rear. Seat came in, but the suspension base is still shipping.

If you can figure out how much those struts are lifting, in lbs.,  these are probably cheaper.
