Title: Eaton 5HP 2 stage Air Compressor 60 Gallon Tank Build
Post by: stlaser on November 25, 2015, 10:42:01 PM
So long story short I had a nice Eaton compressor that had a million man hours on it. When I sold business and had auctions I sold the compressor rather than relocate it to CO. You have to draw the line somewhere and my best equipment was kept and the well used stuff & I parted ways. So fast forward several months and I'm now tired of not having an air compressor. I found a like new 60 gallon tank on CL local with a 200psi rating for a song and a dance. So once acquiring a new shop I called up Eaton. Couple weeks later these components showed up on the back of a semi on a small skid.

Well, that will be plenty for a home shop.

This Eaton V4 thing I have is total overkill, but running like a champ...and quiet, well like as in mud tire quiet...

Correct, last unit was a tad small so after speaking with the owner (Tony is it?). We decided to bump up to this small 2 stage unit. I'll post pics of the tank and frame or partial frame here in next day or so. If I did my ciphering correctly this unit should squeeze under that first loft I built. I plan n using sound deadening material on 2 sides of it against wall and bottom of loft to help absorb or muffle the sound.

220 lbs....yikes!

You know Ken in my mid 20's I used to load corporate 14 bolt axles by myself into the bed on my f350, no joke. I unbolted that from the pallet yesterday & went to pick it up off the floor to put it on the bench. It was a bit awkward w/ that large pulley wanting to spin & I stopped. Said to myself I know I can do this but why when the motor hoist is sitting right there. Definitely slower but my back doesn't hurt either....

Yeah I hear ya, used to have skid loader with forks then upgraded to 90hp mf 4609 with loader & forks. Some things I still miss about owning equipment. Not the maintenance though....

We're planning on adding a shed in side yard adjacent my work space so down the road I may move this noise producer out there.

So here are a couple photos of the tank and frame that came with it. This was a bulk storage tank for a large home build that had a manifold hanging off the back rack with multiple ports for the various contractors to plug in to. I helped remove that manifold when I purchased this. Prior owner didn't want the frame so I took it and am going to clean it up and add to it. I will mount the compressor and motor above this tank on that frame once I add a couple more supports and a mount plate on top.

That frame (plus a couple strategic additions) will hold the compressor above and tank below. Originally I was going to scrap the frame but it has a couple things going for it. First it has a nice wide base and you can't see them but under each corner there are some nice rubber feet already mounted. I will try those feet first and if I'm not happy I'll get some hockey pucks on order.

I use the rubber insulators you can find on places like Zoro and Fastenal. Just be sure to check the ratings for weight. The studs make it nice for mounting either way.

OK, so a little farther today on the Eaton Build. I pulled out the two piece pulley (probably has a technical name but I don't know it) and hardware. Then installed it on the 5HP motor.

After that I lined up the compressor head on the edge of the bench and then slid electric motor pulleys up against compressor pulleys. I made sure everything was square then started to take mount measurements from the edge of the table to bolt mount locations. This gave me an offset reference for the compressor versus the electric motor. Once I completed drawing up the plate with mount locations (holes for the compressor and slots for the electric motor to be able to tighten the dual running belts) I then took the flash drive with file to a local fab shop with a small cnc plasma. They had 1/4" up on the table and will run this later today. I will pick up those plates and some steel tube to finish the frame tomorrow.

That was not at all an intelligent correction of terminology. It was a bit of useless knowledge from a sarcastic oilfield hand. When you spend half your life on a platform with 20 guys, you hone those skills.

OK, so I landed a job installing a 3" lift on a Tacoma week after this one. It would be really helpful to have air tools so the plan is to finish this build this week. Here are a couple of pics, first is what I'm working with from prior owner and second is all the misc steel cut to length. Plan on welding the frame up in the morning and start painting after that. Then comes assembly....

It is, I wanted to epoxy it but my nasty habit of smoking with acetylene & oxygen with little buggers of steel here & there wouldn't allow it. Seemed staining was next best thing. So so happy with it, was brand new Crete & I even etched it. However it still flaked off in a couple small 1" spots so I don't know. Better than nothing I guess & oil puddles up & wipes up very easy now.

OK, so per DOT RM Doctrine you always read instructions last. Well, I cheated and read them half way thru the process this time. Come to find out they recommend mounting the compressor head to angle iron so that you can have maximum air flow around the head to cool it. So I didn't as my design had it being mounted to a 1/4" plate. Now I could have used steel spacers to move it up away from the plate but where I'm locating this I have a height requirement to keep it under (loft above it). So out comes the sharpie and torch to remove some steel and install some "factory air".......... ;)

half hour later we have a big ol hole.......

Edit: so I sprayed the frame with primer. One tip I should mention, if you're spraying a rectangular tube you always start by spraying the 4 corners of the tube length wise. Once you do that come back & spray the flats length wise. This helps to keep any runs to a minimum. Round tube you're just sol as I know of no good ways to keep runs at bay other than a lot of light coats....

Here's some grace for you Don, the fact of the matter is I kept that one D-60 cover you painted and sent back to me. Yeah, I have it hanging on the wall in my current garage. OK, so a little more progress today. I laid the final top coat on the tank and the frame today. I also received a critical component this evening from Grainger that I had ordered online several days ago. It is a 3/4 x 3/4 check valve with a 1/4" port built into it. When assembling a compressor head onto a bare tank you should make sure the tank has a check valve installed on the intake port into the tank. Being that my tank was used prior as a storage tank it did not have one. I believe the theory on this is that start up is easier on the compressor head. Two items are plumbed into that 1/4" port on the check valve. The first is a vent from the crank case on the compressor and the other ties into what I believe they call the unloader valve on the pressure switch. This head also has a by pass built into the top of the cylinder heads and is used for continuous operation such as a gas or diesel powered unit. We will not be using that function as this is an electric powered setup so I will just be capping that line connection off at the top of the head. However, if it were to be used with a gas or diesel power unit once the tank reaches pressure it opens these valves on the top of the head which act as a by pass allowing it to run but not create pressure thus keeping heat from building up under continuous power. So tomorrow I start the assembly process, I am going to pick up some hockey pucks after my morning work out to use as feet for the base of the frame.

Good question TRN, & one I'm going to ask manufacturer today. It was in that pesky Eaton instruction manual. I re read it like ten times as I didn't understand why we would do that either. Only thing I can think of is maybe due to this being a 2 stage pump the crank case builds pressure? Not really sure but when I built my last compressor from them it was a single stage & I did not do that. If Don sees this & has a minute he could look at how his is plumbed (pretty sure he has a larger 2 stage unit from them) & confirm this is correct. Although his may be different as this is single cylinder & he's has a couple cylinders on his I believe. One other thing worth mentioning was that in the instructions there is supposed to be a 90 degree compression fitting on the compressor head output that didn't make the build apparently. Not a big deal as I can get one local.

I also tried looking at Eatons site (picture section as Don knows I like pictures) & the one poor picture I could make out that vent tube went down towards the area where the head output went. Couldn't see where they ended up due to frame being in the way but it appeared to match the instructions.....

On mine, that tube runs from the crankcase to the intake side of the head, just like the pcv on a car, sucking out the blowby.

Edit: & just for tickles & giggles I just went out & looked at intake side of head & air cleaner assembly. There is no provision for that 1/4 inch line there....

2 stage, 2 piston, but I forgot to mention it was a gas compressor converted to 3hp electric.

Post by: stlaser on January 22, 2016, 10:20:33 AM
Sure that line isn't for the open by pass for continual operation? This was a gas unit.....

Edit: that line doesn't appear to have a check valve in it unless it's built into head. So if that is just a breather tube how does that work? PVC is essentially a check valve correct? So you would think this line would have one too.

It could also be a line for pressure feeding oil.

Ok, spoke with Eaton very helpful. Long story short since it is not a continuous run unit I leave vent on crank case alone. The way the manual read it appeared to say to connect it to the check valve on the tank but it was referencing or it meant to reference hooking it in with the unloaders on top of the cylinders. As I am not using those they get capped off & vent stays open to atmosphere, which makes a lot more sense....

Edit: Proof for Ken..... ;)

The part they don't specify is when they say check valve third bullet point what they are referencing is a part of the pilot valve that you use when operating on a continuous basis such as a gas or diesel engine. The only check valve I have on this system that I am aware of is the one installed in the tank which they referenced in the second bullet point. Having these right there together with my feeble mind made me believe we were speaking of the same valve..... And for the record Don pics would have been very helpful! ;D

Hmm. Not sure how that works (mine). Don't see a check valve, but a local (competent) compressor shop converted this one.

OK, so yesterday I spent most of the day picking up pieces here and there to finish the build. Then ran around to girls basketball games and tournaments most of the morning. So this afternoon I started piecing together the build. Started by adding a ball valve to the bottom drain which I will most likely swap to auto drain in the near future. Then mounted the hockey pucks to the bottom of the frame and went ahead and mounted tank in frame. Finished by loosely bolting the electric motor in place and opening up the wiring to see what I was dealing with there (four wires coming out of the motor and a diagram of which ones to splice together for CW & CCW rotation) pretty straight forward. Was going to mount pump but that meant dragging out engine hoist and I wasn't having it today......

OK, so Monday I hoisted compressor head into place.

Finished up the plumbing

Then wired up the unit today along with new breaker in the box an new 30 amp plug and receptacle. Slapped on the new belts & we started making pressure only to find a leak on the 3/4" output compression fitting and no replacement ferrels local.  >:( Will pick one up in morning and then dial in the pressure switch settings.......

That pump on that 60 gallon tank looks huge. Should fill fast.

I wouldn't necessarily say that...you see the size of that motor pulley!!

I agree, plan is to eventually run 2" black pipe around the ceiling of the shop with several convenient drops to add to the capacity....

So I installed a 3" leveling kit on an 08 Tacoma this morning. Compressor functioned flawlessly. It's quiet & had no problem keeping up with my impact. At some point I will update the build with a guard around the belts & pulleys. For now I need to get this wired & moved into its permanent location under my smaller loft.

Looks nice.... I have a electric unit as well. I have mine plumbed with a unloader valve so I can set it to run continuous. Although my unit will easily run along with most everything I ask of it, sometimes if sandblasting hard with a large nozzle I will set it to continuous so it doesn't have to start and stop. That works out very slick when blasting, and I never see a drop in performance then at the sandblaster.

After running my project a year, my only planned change is to plumb the air intake outside...someday.

Yep, no continuous run for me. I doubt I buy a sand blaster living here in suburbia. I had one at the farm for years & used it twice I think. Big jobs I always took to commercial guys. I finally moved it under small loft into its permanent place over the weekend & stopped at HD to buy the wiring for it & the wall outlets. I've used it several times w/o issue, even when running big impact it doesn't seem to even work it unlike my last smaller single stage unit.

Hey Koot, doing two things here

1. Messing up Shawn's thread...pay back kinda thing

and,

2. I haven't found any of those hit and miss engines. Any ideas about how to better look for them? I want to buy one and get it running down on the farm. That thing is just too cool not to own!

Don... I might have a a few for sale/trade in a few weeks. I am working a deal now to buy a mans collection in the near future. When I do...before I sale any off I will post them here.

And yeah two stage compressors are the way to go for a hobby shop/business. I should always pay someone to sandblast, but the local guy that does it is in jail again.

2 Stage V-4 Compressors are the bomb!

Makes me wonder what a small block Chevy converted into a compressor would be like?!

I am riding in a way rural area where everything everyone owns is on display on the porch or yard or in the barn with the walls partially missing. Found some cool tractors so far and get this, two 1964 fast back barracudas!

No kidding the farm across the street was auctioned off a couple months ago. The new owners were in there clearing off the mess, and right there is a pile of old cars and trucks in the barn were two fastback Cudas. Those huge bubble rear windows are in perfect condition. Now they are sitting beside the street. I'm trying to find out...

I know first hand how you find the darnedest stuff in old buildings/barns. Sounds like your weather is nice enough to go riding. We have had a few warm days in the 70's. But that just made every country road a mud bog...which isn't without it's fun moments.
