All, if you have time and are close to the computer there is a good chance this will go tonight 830EST, it will be kind of history making if all goes to plan, the first stage will be returning and landing on a pad close to where it took off. If you have kids it should be a great opportunity for them to see history (if all goes to plan)!
they don't start streaming until 30min before launch

It is really great to see it be successful. Made in "Merica with engineering that is local.
I think one of our biggest embarrassments as a nation in the last 20 years is being dependent on Russia for our space program. SpaceX and Bezos takes it a step further.
-
Hats off to SpaceX and American ingenuity!
-
That 1st stage coming back in for a landing was intense. It's like something out of a scifi movie, firing retro rockets and all that. Very cool moment.

I agree. That was amazing to say the least. One can only imagine the engineering behind that feat.

And THAT is what is very different with this company and rocket. I don't think that has been done before.
Did you see the vid where they launched the falcon 9 first stage only and slowly climbed to 1000M altitude, then hovered it for awhile, then descended it for a spot on landing back on the pad?
Amazing!

Hey Don that is called the "grasshopper" it was kind of destroyed when the engine failed during one of the tests

At almost min 34 listen, this shows how bad the media has gotten, CNN said "everyone started chanting". They forgot to say everyone was shouting USA, USA!!!

Liberals are enemies of freedom and good and truth.
And they prove it at every turn.

I'm somewhat ignorant of this new growth industry

I have to research that "vacuum engine".

What would you like to know. Nothing new in the technology just how it's applied and how things are built.
-
I have to research that "vacuum engine".
It's just called M-vac because that's the environment it operates in.
-
So Phil, are you the proverbial "Rocket Scientist?" :)
-
No I'm just a redneck with a third grade education but I have been accused of having more than one brain cell And I build rockets for a living.

Every time someone here tries to over-complicate things here we tell them "we're not building rockets". If you don't mind, I'll just start telling them "we're not wilsonphillin' it here".

Where the name M-Vac comes from is Merlin(name of engine) and Vac (vacuum of space). Yes I am a part of SpaceX I am the grandpa in my group and I'm considered young in Aerospace years.

So by grandpa you're the oldest by probably ten years or so, possibly even less because college grads today seem confused about age and wisdom. But youngest in aerospace years meaning you're somewhat new to the industry? Because when I first read it I was confused as how you can be a young grandpa. Fascinating accomplishment for space x and all involved though, even if somehow or another you have managed to be old and young all at the same time :)

Well it depends on how you want to look at it, most of the "children" are either fresh outs (4 year) or have their masters and a few have Doctorate so in a lot of cases I have been in Aviation/Aerospace longer than they have been alive so it averages that most are anywhere between 10-25 years younger than me. I have been around Airplanes my entire life, but my career in aerospace really started in 1998, I don't count my Military time and Pilot time as Aerospace. So in the Aerospace/Aviation you have a 50year time frame to be somewhat effective that's why they call me Uncle or Grandpa. Uncle to my face, Grandpa behind my back.
-
Well Mr Phil, congrats on what you and your "kids" have done.
It is great to work for this company, you can get so much done and your not hamstrung by all the BS. They could care lees about what school you went too all they care about is "CAN YOU GET THE JOB DONE"

Phil,
That is pretty cool. How does the falcon 9 stay attached to its landing boat, and is that boat remote controlled? I see it said something about autonomous drone or some such. Also, is this the first successful landing on the water like that?
Was the launch in FL?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Basically what is do is we run over after the rocket has been secured and we have big steel shoes that go over the landing foot and we weld that to the barge. Yes the barge is a drone ship, and it was the first time we kept it upright. We have hit the barge every time we have tried, just a little too hard in most cases! We launched out of the Cape, the ship is 200miles off the coast.

The boat landing was indeed impressive. Seems the brainiacs at the company are getting things dialed in and fine tuned. Thanks for sharing. Look forward to seeing another one.

Kind of a recap from concept to success.

I can't tell you how proud I am of SpaceX and the people that work there. So many incremental accomplishments over the years. Much to look forward to as well.
I have a nephew in law that works at SpaceX and he loves it. They moved from Ohio to Austin for the job and couldn't be happier.
Our government space program has been a national embarrassment for years depending on Russia to launch our astronauts to the space station. The private sector has stepped up and are bringing it back. ;D
I am old enough to remember sitting in front of the black and white TV watching the first moon landing live with Walter Cronkite narration getting in the way. You want to talk about inspiring kids to go into science/technology/math... that was a moment. Hopefully SpaceX is bringing that back as well.
Great stuff!

We have always done real well at bring down spot on, even when we didn't have a barge to land them on. we will be re-flying one of the ones we have brought back later this year, but the big news is going to be the Falcon Heavy at the end of this year, along with the Crew Dragon and Red Dragon lots going on guys!!!!!!

DOT alert....
I'm going to pretend that I'm smart, and that I'm Phil for a moment....a famous rocket scientist.
If we take the distance to Mars which is 34,000,000 miles (rounding numbers here) and divide that by the speed of the craft in the video, of 63,000mph, we come up with roughly 540 hrs, divided by 24 hrs in a day, and we come up with approximately 24 1/2 days travel time. ya might wanna take something to read :)
-
Well, you are not taking into account a few things. First it will take a little time to accelerate to 63000mph. And then a little ways out you have to start braking so you don't go flying past your target. Lastly there is this thing called orbital mechanics, so every two years we are closest to Mars so in ideal conditions 80 to 90 days. And remember this is if you are burning fuel the whole way otherwise it's a nice 9 month journey!!!
-
And I'm not famous and I only completed the third grade, but I sure do like thinks that make smoke and fire!

Ken, I'd give you a rocket scientist badge for a day, that's some pretty good thinkings!

9 months just drifting! Oh man that would be a long trip. Sure is fascinating none the less. Guess I'm in the wrong field of work, considering once this gets rolling there is going to be a need for many different fields of study to be employed.

I was taking note of that 63,000mph number
We accelerate things to what, 18,000 mph for orbit and 25,000 mph to escape orbit???
63K is a much higher number...So I was wondering how exactly we did that without having to build a rocket a thousand feet tall and half a mile in diameter just to carry all the fuel.
I think in 2008 the earth passed within 34,000,000 miles of Mars, but that won't happen again for a long time. Typically the distances are much greater, meaning more time. I always thought travel time was around 9 months give or take for one way to the red planet...

Phil is a bit of a mystery to me
The same guy shoots expensive stuff into orbit, then lands part of it back on the very launch pad from which it departed...Also messes with 18th century Dodge Ramchargers with steam engines.
I just don't see the connection. Unless its related to the principal that neither should actually work???
-
Not much mystery with me, just a semi-educated red neck that made it thru the third grade. I try to never forget how far we have come with technology and always try to learn from the failures.
Someday I might have to go back to pulling a plow with a horse, but I need to remember/know how to make the iron/steel/bronze to make the plow.
As a society we can regress real fast and so much basic knowledge is not taught now, I’m not one of the doom and gloom people but I try to be prepared.

Cool! The Drudge click through headline said "Mysterious equipment spotted on SPACEX drone ship" and I wondered if it was something bizarre or just something pretty neat (whether you could discuss or not). Looking forward to seeing how this evolves. I like that private companies are doing this. I think private enterprise is usually much better faster cheaper than government bureaucracies at getting stuff done like this.

A Chinook is hovering nearby with a painted up falcon 9 first stage. The pilot, a handsome devil, sets the booster on the barge and then flies off
I think they used Chinooks to fake the moon landings too!

Now Don why would you spread this type of propaganda about the world as we know it, the last time we tried the Chinook the rotor mufflers came off and you had to engage the anti-gravity system we got off the alien space craft in Roswell. Everyone knows we are using the Skycrane for all these deception video's.

I wish I could find the pic of me, Sam and Sophie all wearing the occupy mars shirts. we all woke up at different times, didn't see each other in the morning and all chose the same shirt, so the wife had to get a pic, and oh, and Sam has stolen my "Remove before flight" tag. As a 19 year old, I really like seeing him so interested in your company's ventures. we spent an entire flight from Phoenix to SF with Sam sitting next to EM's private pilot. Very cool stories and inspiring. Too bad he can't intern for you guys, it'd be nice if you had Seattle roots.

I heard you guys are going to have satellite internet once you get the satellites in place?
-
Phil, why no first stage recovery this time? Watching it live with the kids
-
Reason is we burn up all the fuel, some missions we cant bring home either because of weight of payload or orbit insertion
-
This is awesome. Seeing it live is as well.
Just read a bit about the customer.
I'm thinking I may have been on these when we were on the cruise back in February.
Not sure, there may be others also, but it was pretty dang good internet for the middle of the ocean.
Always love to see these updates.
-
Phil when is the next launch? I was considering taking the girls to see a launch live. (I'd like to see it too!) We take space travel for granted.
-
TRN, I cant say much about launch dates until they are publicly announced, best recommendation I can give is keep an eye on the Spacex.com website, we are building a launch complex in Texas so you should have to travel very far. But the Cape or Vandenberg would be the best bets if you want to watch one soon.

If anyone is really interested in how far we have come, please take a few min to read this interview given buy Tom Muller.

One can only wonder what that car will be worth someday when some salvage guy recovers it????
I was going to propose Square D, that would really throw the Aliens way off
-
Video of the launch was amazing. Put it on the kitchen table while the kids were having a snack and let them watch. They were all pumped. They kept asking if it was real.
-
So, as far as i can search, I can't determine whether or not the third booster made the successful barge landing? Anyone know?
-
That was cool, had to watch the recording though.
Now all they needed was to have the guy wave!!
-

Third booster did not make it, hit the water at about 300mph. Video to come soon. This is where your glad it did not hit the target (Drone Ship)
-
I watched the recording too. I found it very impressive. Human engineering at it still very young prime. Although the bad comes with the good. We may one day be too smart for our own good. I digress. Imagine that car just hanging out in space top down cruising. HAHA

Oh snap!
Was that "shots fired"?? More like a suppressed shot....
-
Watched it again and I think the thing that is most impressive is the booster landings. Its got to be easier to send it up than it is to bring it back. Keeping those things stable at low velocity is impressive.
Any footage of the center booster making what would have to be one heck of a splash?
-
Is that why video was lost?

its relative, the internal pressure increases 14.7psi from sea level. usally the air will permeate thru the rubber and over time decrease to nothing.
Now what can cause real issue is the thermal cycle the material/tires will see that could in theory do something if certain conditions are present.

So this Fri around midnight PST we are scheduled to launch Crew Dragon, thats 3am EST for the east coat clowns.
If possible please try to watch and if you have kids it will be historic for them to see, if all goes to plan the USA will be able to fly US astronauts on a USA made capsule and rocket to ISS. This flight will be a dry run no people on board.

Is this live broadcast on youtube or where? (for us southern clowns....)

It has been a CRAZY ride I have been here almost 7yrs now I was hired specifically to help build the life support systems(got sucked into other things along the way)and it was reliving to see all the systems and components that so much time and effort had been invested work as designed!
A even greater appreciation of the people in the 50's and 60's that did everything with slide rule, pencil and paper. really amazing what was build not so much the spacecraft but also the infrastructure to make it all happen.
-
Did, or have you, ever gotten to go to the launch in person?

How many times do they intend to re-use each falcon? This was the third landing for this one they said and it made me think, is there a service life expectancy on these things.
-
Each Falcon is engineered/qualified for 10 flights
-
That will take a while!!!
Another question, this starlink system doesn't have any kind of propulsion system, how will they know what will be covered? Are they expected to fan out only a certain distance and cover a specific area? Like a geo-stationary satellite
-
I think in the video it said that Superman was supposed to push them around. :)
Actually they have an impulse propulsion system that uses electricity and krypton gas. Make more sense now? Me neither, but it sounds like something that should be on a satellite/spacecraft.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Well without boring you guys with rocket/RCS/different types and ways of maneuvering spacecraft. You also have reaction wheels, cold jet thrusters that are just glorified blow guns. What is used on a given spacecraft comes down to how complex do you need and how long will the spacecraft be in orbit.
In reality Starlink bird units will have a very short life by design.
Most GEO birds that are launched have a service life of 10-13 yrs and weight 15K lbs or more and 50% of that weight is fuel which 90% of the fuel is used during the apogee burn the remaining 10% is used for station keeping. Usually an apogee motor(bi-prop) is rated for 100lbs of thrust.
I have worked some really cool projects over the years RAM/SCRAM capable of Mach 3-5 and all the way down to .25lb thrusters. One of the more memorable was LEAP Low orbit Excto Astrotospheric Projectile, that was so much fun and really cutting edge technology, now I look back at that and say what a dinosaur but what we built with the tools we had is really amazing.
-
Yea that’s interesting! Will be crazy when they succeed with the intended goal of starlink.
-
Phil,
I still get chills every time I watch a launch. I think it goes back to me as a kid watching the Apollo missions take off.
Very cool how they are deploying the 60 Satellites. "like a deck of cards fanning out". So are they basically on the orbit path and then one by one will put on the brakes to settle in to their stationary position? I guess I am assuming they will all be on the same orbit but maybe they would be. More of a mesh?
Either way congrats! Love hearing the crowd cheer in the control room at each milestone during the launch. We don't get to do that where I work..
-
These can be seen with the naked eye, I will get some time for those of us in the USA in the correct area!

MK3S you can buy in in a kit form or assembled. Dont mess around just get this UNLESS you plan on making bigger parts
-
Now that is about the neatest thing I have seen as far as latest technology in the past decade or so.

This is the future, all the current product we have is already obsolete Falcon and Dragon are ready for gate guard statu. This engine is methane fueled and mostly 3D printed. Ultimately this will go to Mars. But we plan to build a planet hopper version think carry C5 level cargo ANYWHERE in the world in 90 min. We built this in 6 months BTW. The real version will be LARGER and lots more power.

6 months!!! Holy cow that’s insane.

3d printed from what?
Parts can be 3D printed in a variety of metals now. Basically a robotic welder that lays weld bead on top of weld bead to build a structure. They can make a very strong structure per its weight because material only needs to be placed where it is required for strength.

It comes down to location on both fronts, about as far south as we can go in the continental US AND if the rocket blows or we blow it for malfunction then it rains down parts in the gulf of Mexico

-
Phil,
Just guessing but is the brown cloud due to solid rocket fuel vs liquid? Or can you not say the importance of the brown cloud.
-
Most RCS(Reaction Control Systems) thrusters are what is known as Biprop, a fuel and an oxidizer. Typically for Fuel Hydrzine, MMH, N2H4 and then NTO Nitrogen Tetroxide, N2O4 so the Hydrizine and NTO are hypergolic (burn when come in contact) so in VERY basic terms you spray the two at one another into a chamber that burning mixture goes out thru a orifice and you make thrust.
The big brown cloud you see is the NTO, your life expectancy is pretty short after a couple breaths as the NTO breaks down to Nitric Acid in your lungs so you drown on your own fluids. The hydrazine attacks the central nervous system it wont kill you right away but your days a numbered as long term exposure is what dose you in. Your body cannot process the Hydzine so it just rides around in you system until it gives you cancer or some other problem. I hate to think how many years i have shaved off my life!!!!

Yikes. Check. Stay away from NTO and Hydrazine.
How does that propellant differ from the SpaceX fuel?

Didn't the Nazi war machine have problems with hydrazine when fuelling the rockets they flew during WW2. I believe that fuel was hyopgolic as well. First used in the manned comet, then the V2 as well...Do I have that right?
-
Didn't the Nazi war machine have problems with hydrazine when fuelling the rockets they flew during WW2. I believe that fuel was hyopgolic as well. First used in the manned comet, then the V2 as well...Do I have that right?
Negative, they were using ethanol Among other things that didn't play nice with people and equipment, it was liquid fuel LOX and ethanol. Of note the V2 was a copy of Goddard's design the Germans just copied the design for the info they got off the patent they got a copy of the patent from the US patent office.
Hydrazine didn't start to be used in space applications until the 50's, made by Olin(Winchester). The French are the ones that came up with a very weak from of Hydrazine in the 1800's, they developed it to use as fungicide for grapes but it has a great secondary feature as it breaks down it forms ammonia which is a great fertilizer.

Congrats Phil. That engineer narrator’s voice reminds me of the guy on Motor Trend

You guys seem to have a good lead on the Boeing at this point
Congrats for the SX team!
-
It not that Boeing dose bad engineering but they are a perfect example of what happens when you farm many aspects of a program out to different groups and companies and rely on them to deliver a good product.
Reason you dont see that happen with SpaceX is we do 90% of everything ourselves.
-
I get feedback from someone in the (pilot) industry the whole issue was trying to fix a problem that was not there. Old system worked fine and would have on the new Max. Sensors not needed and fed to system that overroad the pilots input.
-
So just witnessed the weirdest thing.
I’m hopin Phil will confirm the launch of 60 new satellites.
Was out dumping the ash pail and a satellite caugh my eye.
Then another shortly behind.
Then another, then like 20-30-40 more. Had time to get a look at a line of satellites all the way to the horizon, holler at mama to come out, and her to see as well.
All in a row, neatly and evenly spaced, far as the eye could see, all on about he same trajectory.
Got cold without a coat but t here was many of them.
Danged if it wasn’t one of the coolest things I’ve seen in the sky.
-
That is so cool, glad you were able to pick them out. Who says living way up there doesn't have advantages.

Yes what you are seeing was the last group of 60 we put up a couple weeks ago, in a couple more weeks you wont see them like that anymore. But dont worry we are putting up 60 more on Monday if the weather holds. BTW SpaceX is now the largest operator of satellites in the world now.

It really is amazing that all of this exciting stuff is going on and you rarely see anything in the press about it.

SpaceX now firmly entrenched in the defense contractor/governmental complex
The outright brilliance and vision of Elon Musk is staggering.

Seriously though makes me want to stand up and shout ‘Merica!

As of right now we are still a go for 05/27 but the weather in not looking real good.
If any of you have your kids at home please try to have them watch the launch, the USA is back in business of putting our own Astronauts in orbit on USA built and designed rockets.

I bet if that had been a military launch those guys would be circling the earth right now. But given the visibility this launch has with a private company doing America's first launch after the Obama space crushin' years, I suspect the safety nazis are in full control. But if we needed those guys and payload in orbit it would have made it. Hat's off to SpaceX and the folks in NASA who allowed this marriage to take place. It is the future for sure.
-
You would be correct. This mission belongs to NASA so ultimately it’s 100% their call if we launch or not.
IMO LEO will be abandoned by NASA and it will mostly be commercial investment. I predict rocket travel with become like airline travel in our lifetimes and cell phones will go the way of land lines.
-
Cell phones? I can satellite or even a watch setup but we are to addicted to being connected. How is the next step?
-
https://www.starlink.com/
-
Still have to talk on something. I like the new stuff but I fear tracking users and so on is getting closer.
-
Yes it will be like a sat phone. It’s not getting close it is already here JR if they really want to track you they will warrant or not.
This will just bring it to the global level.
-
Sat phones have been here for a long time, cell too. Just getting easier to put a sat up vs a cell tower every 5 miles.
Well, they still need a warrant for real tracking IHO. But with all those disclosures you sigh, who knows?
I am waiting for the first real case against drone surveillance. When I was an LEO you could not look over things/fences ect. that was not considered normal. You needed a warrant. Now they fly a drone over your prop (sat maps are diff) and they see what you are doing. Where has our privacy gone?

Privacy, essentially no longer exists. For lots of electronic reasons.
Satellites are the new cell towers. And are continuing to improve with each launch. With in a couple years there will be a satellite network that allows you to go to 90% of the globe with one provider. You will have everything your current phone has for around the same price.
The potential for starlink to overtake all communication tasks (not data storage), is through the roof. The technology is always improving, which means more data can be moved easier. At this point, it is a matter of time to when it’s available, no longer is it an IF it will happen.
-
OK back to launching Americans on American built rockets from American soil.
We are still go for 322EST, (1530) launch, weather is trending go.

Who plays traffic controller for leo? Is there any liability if someone put an objects in leo and it collided with someone else’s stuff?
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
-
Well not really, everybody tracks everybody. It’s pretty amazing what we can track and what we know is up ther and where it is.
Not so much in LEO, but almost all commercial units are underwritten but the space insurance industry is a whole different animal.

That is cool. Is that for heavy lift?
How come we don't land men like the regular craft vs splashdown? Long term safety?
-
JR, this is for Starship. This is what is replacing the Falcon rocket and dragon capsule.
Well originally the capsule was supposed to land propulsivly BUT due to technical reasons it wasn't done. lets just say it was not good times and leave it at that.

I understand. Err on safety and known tech vs having a accident.

I can only imagine what it might be like working within such a forward looking company like (take your pick) Tesla, Space-X, some other less known division of Elon's which is poised to set new benchmarks.
Too early to say, but will Elon be the 21st century equivalent of Nicola Tesla and Edison combined?
Will he be the driving force behind man's first landing on Mars and asteroids?
Its downright exciting to watch this unfold.
-
Will he be the first guy to smoke weed in space?
Someone’s gotta do it....
But yeah. Can do spirit and lots of imagination is the American way

So this morning we have launched our 200th Falcon 9 mission, we have come a long way since 2010.
Phone service is right around the corner!
-
So after 3.5yrs we are going to try to fly this pig, if we don't get sued and have an injunction leveled against SpaceX the launch date 04/17 0700CST.
Most powerful rocket ever built! If it happens try to have your kids watch, it will be quite the show!

Thanks for keeping us in the loop Phil.

I would not call that a failure.
Space X just lifted the heaviest thing mankind has ever lifted off this planet.
That is really what this historic flight was about, and it was successful.
It is ashamed to mar this momentous accomplishment with the costly loss of the second stage vehicle.
But
Both component parts were scheduled/planned to be lost during this flight anyway
Congrats again, Space X!

Totally agree.
Their only goal was to clear the tower, so mission accomplished!

Oops, nice NPD.

AND THE WORLD JUST GOT A LOT SMALLER.
Most powerful rocket ever built!

Phil, what is the fuel consumption of that thing?
Gallons per second?
Pounds per second/minute?
Oh, and all 33 Raptor engines fired this time!
Congrats SpaceX!

That was an Amazing flight.
Booster rud was quite photogenic as well.

Curious about the endstate of both the booster and the starship sections. The last velocity I saw at 1km altitude of the booster was approximately 600mph, so that for sure turned into small pieces of scrap (Sad eyes emoji)
But the starship itself was still cooking well over mach 10 when the data stream ended. Did it survive to contact with the water or break up during low re-entry?
I am so much wanting SpaceX to be successful...Huge fan here!
