I've always like them

And I am really wanting a "car" to drive sometimes since I'm tired of sounding the mooring horn in my supertanker when coming about in parking lots where I don't fit anywhere

I thought of buying a new Silverado 1/2 ton, but the pollution crap and the low rider look turns me off

I thought of buying a Toyota Taco, but the engine has less than no power and it's close to $40K of my hard earned cashola which turns into 20K before you can pay the registration fees

So I was looking over old used stuff

I just don't like the JK's and wranglers in general, but I have always loved those cherokees and have owned two grand cherokees with the 4.0 engine in them, one with like 200K+ and runnin like a top!

Then when I get to thinking, if I can find a nice one reasonably priced, I might be able to build it and still have it worth a good percentage of what I paid should I ever can it

But frankly, considering my age and how I take care of things mechanically (good!) if I bought one, I'd drive it forever, no matter the mileage. Like jets, I'd just keep replacing parts and keep it running.

So yea, I want one, and another for the pre-ranger.

BUY THE GREEN ONE. Sub 32" you'll never break an axle or damage diffs unless you're pulling out heavier vehicles in reverse and uphill. Reverse dana 30 high pinion w/ better ground clearance runs on the drive side of the ring gear teeth, 40%+ stronger than 1999+ w/ standard rotation, low pinion front diff. 8.25chy rear = mo betta butta than the m35. M35-7.562" w/ 8 ring gear bolts, 27 spline axles. 8.25chy is well, 8.25", 10 bolts, 29 spline axles. Manual is great asin/warner ax15, close ratio trans, good crawling gears. Autos are fine too, not overly complicated like the Grand Cherokees.  if it doesn't already have one, get a slip yoke eliminator kit for the rear driveshaft and call it a day.

OK, am talking to a very nice owner of the green one. See if I can make something happen.

Meanwhile, while in Cincy today, McClusky Chevrolet had a 2001 Black XJ for sale, $7995 with 32,000 miles!

So I went to see what a low mileage example looks like

32,000 miles my second left foot!

Underneath, it had four new shocks. The straps holding the rear U-joint were new (recently replaced, as was the U-joint itself. The pinion seal was leaking, it was covered with rust and the driveshaft looked as if it may well rust in half. Up front rust everywhere and both front doors were rusted through. The paint was awful, like just remove it, no chance of repairing it. THe trans was a solid cake of grease as was the bottom of the engine.

That thing accumulated quite a bit of wear for 32,000 miles! (Or 132,000 miles, or 232,000 miles)

I told them straight up the speedometer has been turned back, it was a $2,200 Jeep best case. I started to request they reimburse me for my fuel for the drive, then I got all interested in this double cab "Alaskan Edition" 2500 HD...

I had something going on a really nice green one nearby, but that deal seems to have fallen apart

So, I'm back to scanning the classifieds. No hurry...

Well, the search continues.

I really liked that green one with 104K miles, but it had a 3.5" short arm lift kit already and I plan to run a long arm suspension. It had a non winch front bumper, and I'd like to run an ARB bumper. It had a mid length roof rack and I definitely need a full length rack, so although the thing looks great, I would not have value in all the parts this thing has

So I have located two for me to look at. The first has been stored for a lot of its life, so it is supposed to be rust free. The second is a Freedom model with leather seating and excellent paint, but I don't know anything of the undercarriage. I am awaiting pics. One of them has front and rear bumpers and a full size roof rack...

Could one of these possibly be the Jeep that Don buys?

The blue "freedom model is likely a no-go. Has a rust hole in a passenger door, but no other "Big" rust.

The "Frameish" stuff is OK, but the rear hitch, spring perches and that area are rusted fairly good.

They have an offer on it for $4800, so I will not approach that number for that truck.

I am waiting back from the owner of the other, "stored", one to see when I can drive down and look at it.

JR- I'd leave it bone stock
With a few exceptions:
4.7 turbocharged stroker or LS motor transplant
Frame stiffening
4.5" lift
Tires/wheels
Lockers
larger axles
Exhaust
Repaint to some color I like
Gut and redo the interior
Rack
Both bumpers
winch
armor
nore fuel
LED lights everywhere
Rock Rail
1 ton steering conversion
and a few other minor things like that
...Mostly stock
