PS. For some reason the pictures are appearing upside down at the moment. They are right side up on Flickr, so not sure what's going on there, perhaps it will rectify itself :)

Well, I got my barrelled action back last week, so I figured I better spend some time on this rifle this weekend.

I got the cheek piece clamp installed and painted:

Also bedded the action this morning, I had *just* enough devcon left to do it:

And finally put it all together! I went with the Timney Calvin Elite 2-stage trigger. It's very nice, I can't wait to put a few rounds threw it. My F/TR rifle has the 2-stage Barnard trigger, so I figured a two stage on this one as well would be nice! Barrel is a Krieger Heavy Varmint, 1:11" twist, 24" in length. I have NF steel 20moa rail to go on it as well. Not sure what scope will go on this since the scope I have now will be for my F/TR rifle, but I will find something I'm sure.

Finally got around to getting my cheek piece hardware installed. Milling machine is still out of commission, so had to do it all with a drill press and some calipers, still turned out fine though.

Clamp assembly fits:

And now have the cross bolt that tightens the clamp in as well.

Will just touch up a few dings with some glazing putty, and then bed my action, and paint the stock, and she should be ready for some fun!

What barrel contour?  When I had my grayboe stock I did a layover with several contours to see how it would fit.

It's a Krieger heavy varmint contour. If I remember correctly I think the stock comes with a barrel channel to handle something like a remington varmint contour.

Well I'm slowly making time to get this stock done. I've got the hardware mounted in the cheek piece now.

I was recently working on the butt stock.I don't have a pic, but when I cut out the cheek piece, I noticed there's actually a bit of a void down the center of the butt stock. It appears to be where the injection tube goes to inject the composite material into the mold. So before I could get too far I'd have to fill it. So the other day I mixed up some resin and hardener and put in some milled glass fibers to give it some strength, and filled it in It took about 3/4 of a cup to fill it!). Now the butt stock is truly solid with no voids.

So I had to trim it square and flat so that I have a solid surface to mill into to mount the hardware, and so that it meets up nicely with the cheek piece. I want to have the cheek piece sit flush with the comb when it's down all the way. You can see in the pic, there's a few little low spots and tool marks, but the picture makes them look worse than they are. I will just use some glazing putty on those before I paint it so that it looks proper. The slightly different color resin is the stuff I poured in to make it free of voids.

I may open up the barrel channel a little too, because my barrel is pretty hefty. I will also bed the action at some point as well.

Once all that is done, I'll have to decide which color(s) to paint it, and what pattern (if any)

Might be worth a look into the Gen1 RPR vs. Gen2. I'm not sure what the differences are myself, but if they are insignificant (at least in your own opinion) then the Gen1 might save you a few bucks if you can find a decent used one.

I agree re: barrel, nothing wrong with 20", just limits max range a little more noticeably with a .308. When doing F/TR i had a .308 with a 30" barrel, pushing 155's at 3000fps, and it would for sure hit 1MOA ring with no problem, just really had to be on the ball with wind calls, and also make sure the reloads (ie. powder weight, seating depth etc.) were pretty bang on to keep the vertical stringing to minimum. Certainly all rounds suffer, but the fancy 6 and 6.5s just suffer less :)

What is your primary use going to be for the rifle?

Firearms / Re: Ruger Precision 308

I think they make pretty decent rifles. I'm pretty sure they use an AR-like barrel nut, and aftermarket prefit-barrels are available from decent barrel manufacturers, so if you ever needed to increase performance from the stock barrel, you'd be good to go.

I haven't fired one myself so can't speak to the trigger. The stock is nicely adjustable though.

One thing I never liked about the chassis systems with a tube fore-end, is that the scope always had to sit relatively high in relation to the bore, so that the objective lens would clear. But looks like their rail is thicker than normal, so perhaps you don't need super high rings. I'm sure it's noting to worry about though.

Would have been nicer to see at least a  24" barrel on the .308 model (like the 6.5CM and 6CM got), but with a decent bullet I'm sure it will still be ok, just a little less velocity.

Overall it's a pretty darn good value, and good starting point if you ask me!

Thanks guys, I've always loved the look of these as well.

My biggest conundrum is what to do for a finish on the barrel. The action and bottom metal are blued. From what I understand the M40's weren't a shiny finish like a blued finish, but more matte, like a parkerized finish or something.

I don't want to paint the action. Do you all think it would look semi-legit if I got the barrel blued to match?

Yes I likely will. Just need to get my hands on a rm varmint contour barrel, and then I'll get it trued and bbl installed all at the same time. I also have a 40X trigger that I will put on it as well.

I found an action in excellent condition, and of a vintage to make it similar to the M40. It's a pre-1983 Rem 700 action. I wanted to get one that has the older style, smoother bolt handle, and also has the screw holes in the left rear side that would be used to mount rear iron sites. This one doesn't even looks like it's been fired, no wear or brass on the bolt face, and lugs don't show any wear.

Hey guys, I have to admint, I have a soft spot for older Remginton 700's, especially in wood stocks. So I've decided I'm going to build an M40 inspired rifle. I want it to have all the looks of an M40, but will be shooting it, hence the decision to go 223. This caliber will make is cheaper to shoot, and a little easier on the shoulder since it's going to get the period correct aluminium butt plate.

So far, I have a leupold std base, that looks a lot like the old redfield base they used on the M40.

And I got a numrich stock from a fella that had a few kicking around. Not an "actual" M40 stock, but a pretty good facsimile.

Anyone know where a good place to find parts would be in Canada, or a place that at least ships to Canada? Mostly looking for a period-correct sling, butt plate and scope rings, sling swivels.

Is that dirt on the jimmy or dents?

All dirt. It's above freezing today, so all the road sand and water make everything a real nice mess.

I didn't get the tractor on it yet, but took it for it's first drive. Had to take it to get inspected, so now it's road legal! Good timing too, might be soon picking up some 73-87 chevy parts for an upcoming project!!

Did a nice job on it. Did you want it to be adjustable or would a nice cheek piece done the job?

I got a good deal on this stock and the DBM, and already had the Loggerhead hardware at home, so I figured I'd give it a try.

Though about perhaps getting a saddle-type cheek piece, but I'm not a huge fan of those because they sort of push your eye away from the scope laterally.

What tool did you use to make such sharp corners?

Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk

For the two shorts cuts, I did it on my wood band-saw. But since I only had a 3/8" blade on that, I had to come up with something else for my long cut.

For that long cut between the two short cuts, I clamped  pieces of aluminium flat bar on each side of the stock to use as a guide. And then I got my coping saw and did it slowly by hand.  Took about 10 minutes of hand sawing time, but came out quite straight and flat. And since the blade on the coping saw is to narrow, I was able to get a decent corner.

Starting KMW Loggerhead installation today.

First step, make a template for cheekpiece:

Next, put a tracing line on the stock (wool socks optional):

And then, cut the thing out!

Next, I will mark out the spots to inlet for the hardware. And fill in some gaps etc to give it a nice smooth look.

Well decided to go with a new Remington 700 action (just a new bare action, no barrel).

Also got my barrel today. Pretty spiffy, but darn long! might cut it down a little. She's got some heft to 'er!

All told, I will have my stock, bottom metal, action, krieger barrel, and gunsmithing  all for less than the cost of a Stiller Tac 30 with no trigger. So i'm feeling pretty good about that.

After the barrel goes on, I'll just need a bipod and scope and I'll be all set!

Burris scopes are on sale at DVOR right now through the end of today.  XTR II 5-25x50 with G2B illuminated reticle for $955 and the 5-25x55 with SCR non-illuminated for $905.  They also have a XTR II 4-20X50 with illuminated SCR mil reticle and 34mm tube for $895.  This might also be a good option.  I rarely crank my scope beyond 20.

Likely no shipped to Canada without a bunch of hassle :(

I like my Burris XTR.  My brother has a Gen I Vortex Viper.  That scope is nice also.  I would take my Burris over his Vortex.  I have also heard the Gen IIs are nicer then the Gen I though.
Which XTR do you have? I was looking online at some XTR II 5-25 scopes and they seem to get good reviews, and are pretty beefy. Also though about the NF SHV, I had one before and they are good scopes for the money.

Yeah, I'm thinking I may just get a Rem 700 action with no barrel on it, since I have that lightly used Krieger on the way. Hard to justify the price of a custom action around, at least around here. Plus then I'll have more money for a decent scope and a bipod.

That's where a lot of people skimp out on things.

Yeah the way I've always looked at it, is there's not sense in a sweet rifle, if you can't see and consistently aim at what you're trying to shoot!

I won't be going all-out on the scope, (ie. no S&B, or Khales etc). But would likely end up with a Bushnell DMR or a Sightron or potentially a used NF. The GEN II Vortex PST looks interesting, but no experience with the Vortex scopes at all.

Glorious. Now I want to build a rifle...

Dooo it!!

Was actually looking at some local dealer who are selling Rem 700 barrelled actions. One is a 6.5 creedmoor, with scope rail, trigger (but would swap out xmp trigger anyway) and threaded muzzle with protective cap for $659 (CAD). Not a bad deal if it shoots ok I guess.

The rifle will be my "fun" rifle. Going to do a little practical shooting, maybe some PRS style stuff etc. I had also thought of going .223 since the range I have easiest (and closest) access to is only out to 600 M. And much like the .308, I do have reloading supplies etc for .223 as well. The 308 does leave more obvious holes in paper though when you have teenagers working in the butts. :)

I had a Renegade.  It is a nice stock, but I would recommend you look for something that is adjustable.

I've actually got a KMW adjustable cheek piece hardware that I will put into this stock. And if LOP isn't good enough, will switch the butt pad to be able to use spacers. I got the DBM with the stock for a decent price, so figured it'd be worth a try.

Can't decide if I should go custom action or not. They are super nice. I have pretty ready access to Stiller, Pierce and Defiant. The defiant actions are beaut's, but a little costly for me. Stiller and Pierce are nice, and the price tag is a little friendlier. Any thoughts?

Hey all, I've always liked rifle builds, so thought I'd start mine here. I'm currently just getting parts to put together a nice little "tactical" .308. I know the 6 and 6.5 are sexier, but I've already got a bunch of .308 brass, and reloading supplies, and have shot and reloaded it a bunch, so it just made sense.

I'm going to try one of the Grayboe stocks that Ryan McMillan makes. Its an A5 clone (Renegade I think?) with Badger DBM.

Also found a sweet deal on a Krieger heavey varmint .308 barrel. It's a 30" barrel that was on a F/TR rifle (has just under 2k round through it). I'm going to get the chamber set back, and trim it down to like 24 or 25" (should be pretty close to AMU contour).

Haven't picked an action yet, but the stock is for a Rem 700 short action, or similar.

It's been a while since I browsed triggers, but I see Timney has some 2-stage triggers now. I've always like 2-stage triggers on a bolt gun, may have to check them out.

Around here, 223 is the max caliber you can use to hunt coyotes. Some fellas wanted more speed and made wildcats in 22-243 and 22-284 (!!!). Both would be able to launch even the heaviest 22 projectiles at insane speeds, but as stated would limit barrel (throat) life for sure!

When I repaired trailers we would still drill the holes first. Sure the hardware is better now but in the long run we saved lots of time.

Yup, still gotta drill holes for these ones as well, they aren't self-drillers, just self-tappers. They are just like the ones you can get at Fastenal. Use a Torx T40 bit to drive them in.

I got the wiring all connected. Just need to tie stuff up out of the way. I have a box of trailer flooring screws on the way. They are 5/16" gr.8 self tapping screws, purpose made for attaching wood boards to steel or aluminium trailer frame. So once those arrive next week I will get the decking on. At that point it should be an actual trailer! Still have to make some ramps for it, but that won't be too big of a deal I dont think.

Do you need the bottom set of holes on the channel.  You could just run a bolt or clevis through that if you don't think it will be needed.

That's a good idea. The rules here say the chains can't be connected to the coupler, but that wouldn't be the coupler I dont think (it would be what the coupler mounts on), so might just be the easier solution! I really doubt I'd need the bottom holes, the top half would be most likely to be used, plus the drawbar on the truck is adjustable as well.

I'm thinking for my safety chains I might just drill a 1/2" hole on either side of the tongue and use some gr. 8 hardware and chain and bolt them on. Where would be the best spot to drill the hole, in the web of the channel steel, or on the bottom flange?

I've been thinking lately I'd like to update my generator from a little 3500 watt unit to a bigger one, more like 10KW is what I'm after. Coincidentally enough I've been wanting a stick welder that can do DC. Does anyone here have any experience with something like a Miller Bobcat 250? Looking to hear some thoughts on it both used as welder and as a generator. Always seemed to me it might be a nice mix, as it would see semi-regular use for welding, and therefore should be maintained (ie. less neglected) better than something that's only a generator and can sit for many months at a time without being turned on.

This is what I had for backup power on the farm. I rarely used the welder although it worked fine. Biggest issue was keeping fresh fuel in it. It always was very reliable & started right up. I had even considered converting it over to propane as I had the parts for it. Biggest issue is moving it around, trailer might be handy but everyone can drag that away so I just used skidloader or tractor front end loader to set in back of truck.

Right on good to know. I thought about building a little 5x8 trailer if I had such a welder/generator. Might even think about getting the diesel version, though it does add some heft to the price.

I was actually quite happy with how it turned out, first time I ever hvlp'd before, but it sure beats the heck out of using spray cans!!! I'm thinking the bottom side went on rather thick, and won't need much of a second coat, but I'll get a light second coat on most of it I think. Well it was 21 Celsius today, so I thought I better get a coat of paint on! I first did the bottom of the whole trailer laying on my back on a creeper. Then once that was done, did the rest standing up. The bottom is likely on a little thicker than it needs to be, but just more concerned with coverage than looks under there.

Supposed to be another warm day tomorrow, so hoping to put a second coat on, then call it a day.

I'm just looking at the picture of your bump rail.  Do you have anything to support your decking on the very front frame piece that the rail is welded to?

No, I left that piece out. By the time a cars bumper was at the bump rail, the front tires would be at or behind that first cross member anyway. I supposed I could put something there just in case though.

Humble suggestion if I may. I’d triangulate at least the sides of the front wall you built with some plate.  Same for the tongue jack as that single cross member will twist.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

By front wall, you mean the bump rail yes? That's probably not a bad idea. Each vertical piece is welded the full 5" height of the channel, and that front channel it welded to the tongue as well. I suppose a little extra support would be nice if some yahoo ever thought about putting a winch on there to drag something onto the trailer or something.

For the jack cross member, I had thought about putting in a piece 90 deg to the crossmember, back to the front of the trailer frame for some added torsional rigidity.
