You should get the wee Rangers one of those SKSs' they have for sale. They make great deer rifles and learning rifles.

Some of the best learning from those SKS's is cleaning off the cosmoline; just when you think it's all gone, you shoot it and discover the piston assembly squirts quite a bit when you forget about cleaning it outta there! ::)

Soak the metal parts in gasoline, helps remove most, if not all of it. Clean it up, put the wood in a turkey roaster pan, place in oven, heat it up and the cosmoline will leach out of the wood. If you have access to a decently strong steam cleaner the steam will cause the cosmoline to get runny and be easier to remove.

The SKS is greatly underrated, by most people.

I really should get an AK. I have a kit but just haven't had the time to build it yet. I have mags and rounds already.

Sounds like a fun project
