D.O.T. / Re: Real Courage
« on: June 03, 2015, 03:14:00 PM »
It is pitiful that we as society glamorize celebrity.  The immorality that we allow ourselves to be subject to, no as a society, crave, is the foot on the accelerator to ruin and damnation.   The identification of this confused, misguided, mistaken, individual as a hero should shame us as a society and cause the nation to question our values.  If this society wasn’t founded on Christian values, as some now claim, why is it a crime to commit murder or steal? Why is it not a behavior to be tolerated?  Killing someone is against the 10 Commandments and defiantly violates what Jesus said was the most important commandment, "Love your Neighbor as yourself,"  but it is encouraged in the muslim holy book.  Homosexuals are to be killed according to that book.  Don’t forget about man love Thursday like Don pointed out.  That is ignored. Why am I required to tolerate them, (lbgt, muslim, ect), and their actions but my Christian values and opinions are not to be tolerated?

Where is our national sense of Patriotism?  We are in the midst of Police bashing and harassment.  What about the firemen and other first responders?  These are the people that run to the sound of the guns in the civilian world.  I don’t think they should be worshiped rather respected.  That is courage.  That is love of country.  That is putting others first.  That is what heroes do.  That is what we are all called to do.  Love others as ourselves.

This sense of community, putting others first, even service, is lost on the majority of the population due to the breakdown of families and ever increasing selfishness.

I have had the honor of serving with some of America’s finest in some rough spots around the world.  I have served with heroes.  Both those awarded for courage under fire and those who weren’t.

Heroes aren’t people who do what they are asked to do.  They are people who do the hard, right thing no matter the circumstances.  No matter who is watching.  They put others first.  No matter what.  No matter the cost.

I have and will continue to raise my sons and lead my wife as we seek to glorify God.  This nation needs God.  The silent majority needs to make noise.  Pray for our leaders, society as a whole and our neighbors.  All politics are local.  We can make a difference but the most important thing is to seek his will and be obedient.

I am not any more qualified to call someone a national hero than the next guy but I know what a hero is and is not.

Might also want to get a rescue 8 instead of the regular figure 8.  The wings on it allow you to take a wrap and work hands free or provide additional braking with a heavy load.  Like doing a buddy/casualty repel for instance.

This is a link the army mountaineering manual.  Some good chapters there for another reference.  Like Bobby said use your legs.  An instructor I had once at Sapper school told us arms are for balance and legs are for climbing.  Good footgear is important.  The harder the sole=less traction on the climb.

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Re: Father's Day
« on: May 29, 2015, 11:20:20 AM »
Great idea for a thread.

My father grew up 1 of 7 brothers and 1 sister share cropping in North Alabama along the south side of the Tennessee River.  Cotton was the crop and the stories that my grandpa would tell were something to hear.  My dad talked about “carrying your own row no matter what others were doing,” then going to see about others.  He was number 4 of the 8 kids and the first to graduate.  He joined the Air Force during Vietnam and retired from there 20 years later.  I was born to a cheating mother and my adoptive parents brought me home from the hospital when I was 11 days old.  I have never known anyone else.
He set a great example for my brothers and I and, while we never had much, it was always enough.  He told me that when I was born he brought home 40 dollars every 2 weeks and my mom received more than he did because in those days the military sent the housing allowance and separate rations to the spouse directly.
He and my mother were Christians and the prayers they sent up for me were needed and I am glad to say that I am a Christian also due to that example and influence in my life.
I remember a day when I was about 6 that I walked with him to check the mail.  He saw a letter and wouldn’t talk for a minute then opened it and after reading started crying and wouldn’t say anything until we got to the house.  He shared it with my mother and of course she was crying too.  He told me that was the final letter from the adoption and they could never take me away from them.
We were always involved in Scouts with him taking a lead role and he was gardener and fisherman.  Until the day that he was no longer able he used to take me to some of his childhood fishing holes along the Tennessee and we would wear out the crappie just like the old days.  His time in the garden was his quiet time.  I learned both.
He coached little league and came to every football game that I played just like he did for my brothers if he wasn’t deployed.  When in middle school, I wanted to be in the band and he scraped up a little and bought my trumpet, which my son plays now, and told me that I had to play for at least 3 years or he would straighten it and bend it back around my neck for the remaining time.
 I am thankful that I got the chance before he passed to tell him Thanks for choosing me.  I could have been in some kind of home somewhere, but God put me there to get me where I am now.

« on: May 18, 2015, 04:05:29 PM »
Since we are entering the graduation season let's look to Proverbs 2.  Seek truth.  Jesus is the Truth.

The Value of Wisdom

1 My son, if you receive my words
    and treasure up my commandments with you,
2 making your ear attentive to wisdom
    and inclining your heart to understanding;
3 yes, if you call out for insight
    and raise your voice for understanding,
4 if you seek it like silver
    and search for it as for hidden treasures,
5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord
    and find the knowledge of God.
6 For the Lord gives wisdom;
    from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;
7 he stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
    he is a shield to those who walk in integrity,
8 guarding the paths of justice
    and watching over the way of his saints.
9 Then you will understand righteousness and justice
    and equity, every good path;
10 for wisdom will come into your heart,
    and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul;
11 discretion will watch over you,
    understanding will guard you,
12 delivering you from the way of evil,
    from men of perverted speech,
13 who forsake the paths of uprightness
    to walk in the ways of darkness,
14 who rejoice in doing evil
    and delight in the perverseness of evil,
15 men whose paths are crooked,
    and who are devious in their ways.
16 So you will be delivered from the forbidden[a] woman,
    from the adulteress with her smooth words,
17 who forsakes the companion of her youth
    and forgets the covenant of her God;
18 for her house sinks down to death,
    and her paths to the departed;[c]
19 none who go to her come back,
    nor do they regain the paths of life.
20 So you will walk in the way of the good
    and keep to the paths of the righteous.
21 For the upright will inhabit the land,
    and those with integrity will remain in it,
22 but the wicked will be cut off from the land,
    and the treacherous will be rooted out of it.
