Demo derby’s are always a good time, I worked pits on a combine demo derby once. We used a backhoe and portable welder to put heads back on so they could run more heats.......

Key was knocking rear axle out from under them.

That’s two of us, three if you played Shawn - nothing accentuates the flavor of high octane racing gasoline, exhaust and fine clay dust like Bourbon!  Kinda like fresh burnt gunpowder!

I’ve never raced a sanctioned event that I can recall? I’ve worked many pits from dirt track to off road koh type races & in between. KOH was probably the biggest show I was ever a part of really.

« on: January 25, 2018, 06:56:55 AM »
Dave, unless you live in the artic it’s not needed under a basement slab. Reality is it has to do with how deep the frost line is in your area. Here in Co where I live it is 30” max, NE IN was more around 40” or so. Obviously you want to be below frost lines with the insulation. We just set it on outside of wall at top of footer in Indiana. Guys who cheated would back fill a bit & cut foam board in half. Inspectors would see it sticking out of ground once the entire basement was backfilled and sign off on the inspection, so pay attention there. Here in Colorado they don’t seem to run blue board on the outside (most likely due to higher cost). What they do here is line all the exterior walls inside with bat insulation covered in a white plastic. It’s not near as good as the foam blue board we use on exteriors back in Indiana in my opinion but it meets the min R value. We used blue board on exterior shop foundations as well to help with heating them which is worth noting.

from a former tire guy, get the IROKs. sipe the center lugs for a little ice/wet pavement improvement but leave the outer lugs whole. they'll run like a noisy all terrain.

Good info, I still have my tire grooving iron.....

That's awesome man. My dream for Sophie's first is an 01 XJ but we'll see how that pans out. looking forward to this build.

We’ve been looking for a few months now. I think there are going to be some city / county owned xj’s coming up in another auction soon locally. We missed out on three of them last go around. The one we really wanted sold last & well there were more buyers than xj’s so you can guess how that went. Recall I’m cheap......

How’s the body?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Some hail damage on the hood, and a few small dents that she didn’t care about. Pretty standard for an xj, no real rust at all.

So here’s the deal. Within the last year (I have receipts btw) and less than 5k miles ago it had just shy of $3700 in work done to it including new bfg’s. She paid $3800 for it today.

Well, I spent a good part of the day adding this new addition to the family.

Yeah no, not the blonde girl we've had her for just shy of 16 years. I'm talking about the 2000 XJ with 6" lift and 31" BFG all terrains 133K on the clock which is my oldest Baylee's technically second vehicle. She bought and sold her first already for a profit. Not what I wanted for her but she paid for it and I guess that's what happens when you're writing the check and you've been raised by a Dad who has had off road capable vehicles your whole life. So I think she may become a member here and start a build thread as Dad teaches her some stuff. It does have a check engine light we will need addressed prior to plating, thinking exhaust.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard this afternoon "I'm so excited” well I still wouldn't be wealthy but my pants would be sagging a bit.......

True story, prior to us receiving this blessing all those years ago her mom had a crappy Chevy cavalier. Momma was worried about her and the soon to be arriving little one with Indiana winters. So I found a used 1996 xj in black that I purchased for them. So full circle this was the vehicle she rode home from the hospital in with Mom telling me I was going too fast at maybe 30 mph, we only lived several blocks from that hospital.

Sounds like a good plan. More room is always better.

Heck, I thought you would make the door really secure like using a big bar across both doors like the did in castles.

I questioned why he locked one door on the inside top & bottom and not the other one? A large bar is a great idea too.

6329
I think that’s the one they had at Costco around Christmas time. I think they were asking $900 or around there for it. Looked like fun, but couldn’t throw the bills down at the time until the old house sold.
Ya know, I kinda want one...

On the fun side would be fun to have it film you while you're doing something with some heavy equipment or something like that.
But on the survivability side of things, it could be super handy to send off on a pre programmed route to scout out the driveway every once in awhile to see what's happening where you can't see/hear...

If they have an option for one in orange color I would pass on it if I were you.

Yeah Shawn, you seem to be a side saddle type of guy.  :P

I refuse to be provoked by you today Ken , for the record I have side saddles on my 870’s. However, I have been on courses where that was not enough & the shells needed to be accessible. I used my goose hunting belt & for the record it could have been better. So thinking back to that instance this seemed like a relevant option.

6336
Vests & Protection / Re: Concealable chest rig
« on: January 21, 2018, 01:30:06 PM »
Well if it's for hunting why don't you get a side saddle shell holder? If your hunting I assume you have a pack that can hold extra shells if necessary.

This looked handy & versatile, it’s an each their own moot point I think.

6337
Vests & Protection / Re: Concealable chest rig
« on: January 21, 2018, 10:59:34 AM »
Well why do you need/want a low-vis chest rig? Have you looked into getting something belt mounted?

HSGI belt mounted TACOs:
 http://www.highspeedgear.com/Belt-Mount.html

HSGI Double decker Tacos:
 http://www.highspeedgear.com/hsgi/ddtaco-bm-19DD00.html

HTC low profile system.
 https://highthreatconcealment.com/products/htc-low-profile-system/htc-low-profile-system.html

Yes the last one is expensive, but I wasn't about assume what pouches and etc you need. But you can set one up with whatever you want for cheaper, or buy the stuff seperate and assemble your own belt.

Well, in regards to the 12ga shotshell holder. I have a belt mounted one (think goose hunting belt). The problem with that is the location of the shotshells and ready access when reloading. This unit and the position of the shells to me seemed more accessible no matter the intended use. For example when goose hunting you sit in blinds quite often. By lowering your zipper on your jacket you have easy access where as a belt mounted it’s not the case.

Vests & Protection / Re: Concealable chest rig

hmm.  interesting. would be cool to have 556 mags on the back and 12ga on the front and a few pistol mags under the arms.

I like the idea of the pistol mag add on, not sure I’d need 12ga & 5.56 on one rig......

Edit: looks like adding pistol mags is an available option btw

Rather than bury a steel column why can I not bolt a steel flanged post to the slab??

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

That’s what I was trying to convey

Ken has a legit idea here, wait did I just say that?

You could dig or auger footers where the columes go, toss in some rebar on the heavy side. Then use square tube or even drops of I-beam. Note: if you can find a structural fab shop they will have all sorts of i-beam drops in the 4’-6’ range, check out scrap yards too. Weld a flange to the base or end of tube / I-beam and anchor into concrete. Build posts on or around them. Essentially the base is anchored well and then the upper & exterior is a fabricated wood post. Easy to replace when they rot out ten years down the road versus trying to dig up a wood post that was set in concrete.

Jared mentioned a square steel post in ground, with a heavy bracket on top to bolt the wood posts to. What about using a thick walled box, say 16" tall, anchored on, or in, the slab, with extra footings under those areas? Basically just a h/duty taller version of store bought versions? Or if you were lucky enough to find some square tubing with the inside diameter close to the dimensions of the timber?
