No. Actually I wanted a 1972 Cheyenne C-10. Inherited my grandfather olive and white two tone with only 82,000 on the Odo and then some oxygen thief deserving of death stole it.

Ouch! That hurt my heart reading that... something about losing heirlooms. My ex wife threw away a pair of my grandpas chaps and spurs when she moved out of our old house. I'd tell you what I did, but it's best you all maintain plausible deniability until the statute of limitations has expired....

Now THAT is a near-death penalty offense.........something might be added to her favorite beverage in the fridge, say a few dozen drops of Visine possibly.......

Just dropped her off for surgery... one of you guys said polished slot mags with whitewall out BFG's.... the more I thought about that, the more I was all about it... then I got talked in to these overstocked Helos on the cheap.... I'm not sure I have the patience for polish as much as I used to. I loved the black wheels on my dmax for their ease of cleaning. And well, in contradiction to my inner voice, I kept the whitewall out BFG's for nostalgia purposes!

HC, had a thought, you should give it some serious consideration.

That truck is useless!

Yep, no good what so ever!

In fact it could adversly affect your life

Really!

It has already proven itself to be unsafe

It barely runs anymore

It needs everything, heck even tires (Which never normally wear out  )

With you spending all this time with it, have you considered how this is adversely affecting your marriage?

Or time with the kids?

See where I'm going here??

Get rid of that thing before it all turns south and you become the first cop in history living under a bridge.

Save yourself man!

I'll try and make time to come out there and tow the piece of junk away. Yea, it will inconvenience me, but for a fellow soldier, I'll do it!  I could possibly get Bobby to help. He needs room for his expanding family. (Now a girlfriend and a dog!)

Do the right thing...

I appreciate the offer Don. I kind of have this fantasy to start flipping cars like they do on those TV shows. In all my vehicle searches over the past few years as the young ins come in to driving age I have found there are a lot of cream puffs out there for cheap, as long as you are patient and keep a few grand on hand and can be Johnny on the spot when something pops up.

I had over $20k dollars in equity in the duramax, so I have some wiggle room for this "build"! I figure she will be a peach until she isn't. And even then I could replace the whole rig for the cost of a major repair on her predecessor. Not to mention I am saving $600/yr on insurance so I'm liking the fact my maintenance costs will be covered in those savings!

Chances are however a couple of years from now, I will be posting a picture of my new Fully automated rocket powered Chevy space truck. And pass this dude down to my prematurely balded make a wish kid!

Well I already failed JR! I Think that one would have lasted a lot longer than the original which only made it 180k miles! Piece of junk!! Maybe next time :(

Honestly idk why they wouldn't make them all like that! Same with tie rod ends and U joints. How much longer does it take to put a grease zirt on this stuff?

i've always loved those late 90s Zs. such a cool looking truck. and super clean. be nice to remove those trim pieces and have a smooth white truck. i just can't get over how clean it is. a new set of headlights and you won't know it's not a mid 2000s truck when it passes you.

Road report-

Just did 200 miles of interstate driving. All of the gauges stayed within an appropriate range. No funny smells or noises. Steering could still use some tightening *somewhere* in my opinion. I would like to find a steering dampening kit of some flavor and maybe swap out the steering shaft for something sans rag joint. Rides like a truck, which I'm cool with.

Prior to lift and tires around town I hand calc'd a 15 mpg. Today on the interstate 75-85 mph... drum roll please... .............. 13.7! Lol, but she looks cool!

That's the thing about those older trucks. Your didn't get amazing mpg but when it really boils down to it.  That's not bad. The dollar diff for most of us between 12-18 is only a grand or two over a year

I bet it would be well in the mid teens if you drove 65-70.

Here's the thing on that. 65-70 is just barely idling in OD on the flat. As soon as there's a bit of a grade she has to downshift to maintain that speed. You told me these trans only last 150k..... I hate to Lug it like that and make it shift constantly. Bump it up to 75 and she's around 2200 rpm and pulls the hills a lot better. Is my logic flawed here?? That it's easier on the tranny to run faster with less down shifts?

Yes it is easier on the tranny, but like you see the mileage suffers. At the lower speeds I just used 3rd but I didn't like to drive slower either.

All the shifting heats up the fluid which kills the transmission, correct me if I'm wrong.

Simple solution is to add an additional transmission cooler, very inexpensive upgrade. You can even get them with their own electric fan.

Shifting and no lockup on the converter. Funny how for the last 50 years non lockups did OK?

My DOT story;

When mine went it gave no hint sans a little venting several weeks earlier near Reno. Going up 80 someone stopped me and said they saw smoke, but it all looked fine. Later I crawled under and you could see the vent was doing its thing. Tranny shop said all was fine and it would give me a warning if it did go out. No dice, pulling a mild hill on 5 near Roseburg, Or. it just went out. No jerking, no warning just no go. I got lucky as being on 5 but it was a Friday on a holiday weekend and I was going to Chilliwack, BC. Local dealer said they wouldn't even look at it until Monday (it was 0730) so I left it on the wrecker who ran my up to Eugene and a GM dealer. They had my tranny in stock but couldn't promise anything that day. So I went across the street to a motel, called a few people with my story and went to sleep. At 1500 I got a call saying it was ready to go.
Slept another hour or so, plunked down $2000, had a nice meal and hit the road just 8 hours behind! Was still a great trip even with that.

Now who's Tina ?

You could always gear it Blaine. Would stop hunting gears and bring the mileage back up somewhat. probably somewhere in the middle of where you were and where you are. What size are those BFG's? Getting the RPM back to where it should be will preserve the trans, and you won't have to do 85 to keep it in the right rpm range.

Tina Fey/Sarah Palin, very nice btw!

Got a good chuckle there Wilbur. Spendy? kinda. My money? nope. but just think of all the starving pygmies down in new guinea who throughout their whole lives all they ever wanted was a 90's chevy on 35's with proper gears. Are you really going to take that dream away from them? '

ALL entertainers should maintain Switzerland status IMO.

I tell you, I got a few comments on my duramax once in a while, but I damn near had to pull my gun on a guy harassing me to buy this truck. I've had several offers on it that would put me money ahead on it. But I kind of just want to enjoy it myself for a while.

off topic i know. but of the little time the kaiser wasn't at the house, 2 of the most unusual people have stopped and asked about it. one being a 70 yr old grandma who loves monster trucks and wants one, the other being a tatted up brotha in skinny jeans and a flat brim driving a lowered infiniti g35.. he stopped us while we were pulling it on the trailer leaving the trans shop.. talked to us for a good 30 min and even facetime'd someone to show them. hahah

anyway.. continue with the revamp of a very nice, clean old truck that i think by this point, everyone on here would gladly take off your hands

Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel.

Second that... what did you use? I need to install some on my Dmax. Would be very helpful when in the deer woods and looking for things in the dark.

I used low draw LED marine lamps. Just bright enough to see wo reflection on the glass. I got them from academy in the boat section

 Dang! Wish I would have looked at this thread before I made the trip to academy yesterday. Oh well, good excuse for another trip soon.
