Title: Survival tool box
Post by: Flyin6 on July 01, 2015, 05:51:40 PM
OK people, this is how this is gonna work.

I am kitting out the new tool boxes for Square D with some newly purchased tools and some old ones as well.

I listed a good start to a tool kit below. If after reviewing the list, which should be a good basic list for anyone poking around here and asking "What tools should I carry?" then we can point them to this list. Maybe if we get enough participation I can sticky the thing.

So the condition is you have a Bug-Out vehicle. Lets say an older 2500 series since they seem to be most common. This theoretical truck is made by the FordChevyMopar company. Space will be limited so the size of the tool box needs to be a consideration.

Do not include parts or expendables, as those will be listed in a separate thread.

If you want to add to the list, then copy and paste the existing list and make your additions at the bottom or perhaps where they should fall, but make your addition a different color font so we can see the changes.

OK clear on the procedure??

So without further adieu'

to be honest, just about all of the socket wrenches and other socket stuff could be replaced with this set and you would have a heck of a lot of room left over.

I own the 85 piece set and have yet to really find a socket that I am missing out on, because this set will do both regular and deep well.  now the 131 piece set with the extra wrenches and bit drivers has caught my eye.  plus the 85 and 113 piece sets are star shaped socket head which allow you to work on any kind of bolt head.

I cleaned up the list some
Great little (Maybe not so little) tool kit shaping up here. What I plan to do is to actually put together this tool kit, photo it up, pack it up, and see how all that fits in Square D. I believe we are getting there, heck, I'd feel comfortable going off with the tools listed so far, but let's look over it and get some more smart guys to voice

One wish: There are usually twice the number of guests looking over this stuff as we members. My guess is there are a number of smart guys in amongst that group. I wish they would join up and post their thoughts as well...But that's just a hope

Take a look at these Don. I use these daily...pricey but it replaces a lot of tools, like if you didn't want to carry combo wrenches past 3/4 or crescent wrenches for example. They have an extreme amount of leverage (read: they wont round off a bolt, or oxy gauge, or ....)
Those germans have figured out how to make some awesome pliers. If you ever try their regular slip-joints, you would throw your old ones in the trash!

I am also a huge fan of these Ken. The 'Cobra' are a slip joint on steroids. The pliers wrench will just about do anything.

Chads Tool Box has been very good for me to work with as well.
Don't know a whe lot about them but their prices are pretty good, and they ship to Canada.

Another vote for Knipex pliers. We use these offshore. Everybody totes them in their pocket all the time.

I've never seen nor used them

Looks like I'm going to have to enrich my tool box some

Just came back from an all morning long tool shopping expedition. I'm putting together that tool box we are debating here. I was thinking of laying it all out and photographing, then insert a title for each piece. That way you could send the Jpeg to someone, they would only need to expand the photo to get a complete description

I'm about 90% of that list right now

The Bosch took boxes show up today

Would it make any sense to have a small 2 ton bottle jack in the tool kit?  Though most vehicles will have a jack of some sort, and a lot of you are probably planning on a larger jack exterior mounted like square D.  But I am thinking of the situation where I switch vehicles or bring the tool kit along in someone else's vehicle that my not be prepared at all.  I would be very frustrated to find out their OEM jack is missing and I have no way to change a tire.
Title: Re: Survival tool box
Post by: Flyin6 on July 02, 2015, 01:40:43 PM
...possibly

But you could still get that wheel off the ground by just driving up some inclined plane (ramp) while hanging the tire off in space. Use 4WD to get you up there then back off again later.
I'm not saying yes or no, what do some others think...and thanks for the suggestion, bottle jacks are cheap!

Yeah, a bottle jack has multiple purposes like using as a porta-power....like straightening a tie rod, etc.

I'd say yes for a bottle jack as well. Many uses other than just jacking.

You cant have everything. Having all that I would start getting concerned about weight.  You have all this stuff and it weighs a ton. Now you need water, food, ect.

If weight were not a factor at all I would say you need a good bench vice. They make them that slide in the receiver.  And a good welderator.

we got this one. Welder, generator, air compressor all in one. https://www.deere.com/en_US/products/equipment/home_and_workshop_products/welderators/ac2_cw5170s/ac2_cw5170s.page

The purpose of this tool box is a lighter weight travelling one.

If you have an evasion site set up, that would be appropriately augmented with all the tools you think you might need there. So the big/heavy stuff will not be a part of this travelling tool kit but rather needed at where ever you plan to make a go of it.

Depending on the vehicle a series of torx drivers might make sense.

I don't know if you have anywhere else on the truck but a tire plug kit.  Not the cheap one but a nice t handle and extra plugs

Cleaners or  spray cans like carb or brake cleaner, electrical grease, a few zip ties go along way, of course tape like electrical tape

Got that stuff in the expendables box, but I do have them!
