Title: Chop saw metal blades
Post by: Flyin6 on July 06, 2015, 10:03:40 AM
I finally wore out the carbide tip, a 72 tooth blade that came on the metal saw I purchased a year+ ago. Yep, blade won't go any further, just sits there and heats up.

So I had to order another blade.

WHOA

These things are not cheap...not inexpensive either! And besides that, they cost a lot of $$$$

I settled on a new 80 tooth blade for around $75, but most of the blades ran from $100-$145.

I would say, that is OK. I never had to inhale that nauseous dust from the disintegrating fiber wheels. The metal blade always stays the same diameter.
The metal blade makes great, more precise, square cuts, and I like the color of the blade better than that dirt brown junk on the cotton blades.

So there you have it, some unimportant news that doesn't matter one iota to anyone!

Other than those that have breathed, worn, and otherwise assimilated the noxious brown dusty grime from those other blades ::)

This is very helpful thanks.....do they make metal cutting blades that can be resharpened or are they all carbide tippedal blades that have to be tossed when the carbide tips wear out?

They are carbide tipped
Don't know about sharpening

To use a metal blade, don't you need a specific saw, one that spins slower? Or can you put those blades on an old school saw? I've often thought about that.

I think the spark shower and slag would be enough to mess up your avg dewalt pretty badly. Not saying it couldn't be done but last summer I was working for a stage lighting company and building shipping crates with steel banding. Cut over 4 tons of steel with the composite blades and whoa are they messy. had to occasionally hammer and chisel the slag off the saw base.

Korrekt Ken!

Metal saw spins at 1800RPM. Doesn't the dirt impregnated, cotton wheel one turn at 3600 or something like that?

They did that so they could charge twice the amount for this metal saw. Costs around $450 to get in the game.

These carbide blades don't throw slag or really many sparks. Just really hot little daggers or splinters that pierce your skin everywhere they touch . Good news is they immediately cauterize the wound!

Sheesh. That is not cheap.
But the trade off of the dust dirt etc. is probably worth it.
Not to mention all of the benefits you mentioned.

Not having that dust is in my view the best thing about this saw. But having neat/fast cuts makes the jobs more precise to start with.

These machines are more dangerous though. The blades pull on the material and the motor may be more powerful, so caution is advised

I will keep my little band saw. Does 6 inch, not real fast but doubles as an upright saw for little cuts. Blades are $20

I got that new 80 tooth blade in and installed today

Holy smokes

It cuts steel like butter. I mean it's going through this stuff I'm using in just seconds with almost no downward pressure

I love it

Pics tomorrow when I download the camera

I do not have a metal one yet, but find I run my wood blades far too long as well. Read - I don't change them until I have to burn through the boards.
Put on the new blade and think why did I wait so long.

Ha! I just replaced the blade on my miter saw and thought the same thing...

Here's the old 66 tooth blade that has cut part of the earth apart over the past year,

And the new 80 tooth blade
