My "new" old pickup just runs smooth and steady but occasionally you put your foot in it to pull in to traffic and she just sputters and falls on her face. She doesn't die and then picks up and runs out fine. Any ideas? Has new plugs, cap and rotor, fuel and air filters. Feels like a fuel delivery issue, hence the new filter. I know these trucks have notoriously bad fuel pumps but I have never had one hiccup intermittently on me when it was on the fritz. In my experience they just start quitting and you have to kick the tank once in a while to get them to run in my experience, so I feel like it's something else. But not sure what.

I'd look at crap in the tank and it as you stated fuel pump.....

That fuel injection has an accelerator pump feature, I'm sure. A stumble on acceleration is the accelerator pump on a carburated engine. It stumbles until the engine generates a vacuum signal strong enough to activate the enrichment circuit

You think? I never heard of an accelerator pump on FI, might be wrong tho

I don't think there is an accelerator pump. I stand to be corrected perhaps. I would check fuel pressure and then look for vacuum leaks. Vacuum leaks will make it do that. On that era vehicle there are a lot of small vacuum lines and pieces that develop cracks.

My '89 would do that. Something in the fuel injection system... some part would freeze or something if i remember correctly. Ken can prob chime in with better info

No, I'm not saying it has an accelerator pump. But it is acting like one has failed. That could point to some sensor or something that would sense that increasing engine speed and load and give it a shot of gas via the Throttle body or injectors, depending on the specific setup
Didn't mean to confuse, just airing ideas...

So I started with ignition parts because everyone was telling me fuel. I found when I did the tune up for my father in law I had busted the ear hole off the distributor where the screw goes in. The cap was pretty loose. The rotor bug looked decent but you could tell there had been some funky firing times in multiple spots. And the points on the cap were pretty corroded. I just replaced the parts and used some zip ties to cinch her down. I then put a little larger machine screw with some meaner threads down through the busted part. Redneck innovation I know... but hey, hasn't coughed since! On to the next project!

An upgraded HEI distributor is pretty inexpensive, assuming that is what that unit is in fact. Had several lying around in my old shop before we moved. Don't think they brought much at auction either.

That's the newer style shawn, with a cam sensor built in....no module.
Those ears break off when you use the new screws that come with the cap. (don't ask me how I know) They have a thick layer of threadlock on them which makes them too big for the brittle plastic.
