Raised our girls up from chicks. Got them in the spring and they should have started producing weeks ago! We would occasionally find one or two. Then all of the sudden on one of the coldest nights of the year so far we got 19 eggs overnight!

Nice! How many hens? What breed? They are usually all over the place when they first start laying then they settle down. You using a light to keep them regular? (Laying that is! Ha)

13 chickens 7 1/2 months old!
Here’s some pics of the bedroom. We also have one rooster we call Napoleon because a)he’s an a-hole and b) he’s a little guy. There’s six mentally handicapped guineas in the flock too.
Idk what kind they are. They are the ones you get roped in to buying at the feed store! So far with the coop construction and feed we have in them, I’d say those 19 eggs cost us around $1000.00! We should see a return on our investment around the apocalypse or 2025, whichever comes first!

I live in a yuppie neighborhood, so Chickens are no C-gar here
Farmside has coyotes and other things that'll eat chickens right up
Oh yea, they saw a big cat down there (Great...can't wait to be attacked by that thing some night..) and a couple black bear.
Wife wants a cow, which of course i get to take care of, and will feed the big cat maybe, but someday, i'll have those chickens!

Great thing about the big cat Don is you’ll never see it coming. I’d like some chickens at our place too but since it would be 5 days between visit I don’t think that’s conducive to egg production. Good work Blain and I love the math. Sound like all my projects.

Ha....that sounds about right (19 eggs from 13 chickens)....in a month or two they'll settle down for about 1 a day.
Guineas are great watch birds but noisy as heck. Yikes.
Napoleon Ha! Roosters are good... can help rebuild the flock but if he gets aggressive toss him in the pot. I had a few that went that way when they got too big for their britches.
Good for you guys! Great addition. Especially with the "flock" you have inside the house! Ha.

My wife has about a dozen chickens. We haven't seen an egg since temps dropped back in November. Not sure what's up with that. The eggs are so much better then store bought though.
We also have a rooster, named him Bruce. He was supposed to be a girl.

Shawn is probably right for two reasons: shorter days and really cold temperatures trigger survival programming for survival of hatchlings. Adding heat and more light will probably get them laying again in a week or so I’d guess.

current issue around here ar squirrels are getting into the hen house and eating the eggs. That is why squirrels tast like chicken! LOL The squirrels dug/chewed a hole in the side of the hen house, good think a 22 works so well on those things

I've got a few yard birds. Even below zero I get a few eggs. Bad thing is they are froze and broke by the time I get to them.

Well don't need to worry about it anymore. Apparently the wife put the heat lamp to close to the saw dust yesterday. Went up in flames tonight.

I'm sorry that happend to you. I hope nobody got hurt.
I'm on a couple chicken groups on face book. Every year some people think they need heat lamps and every year there are pictures of burned down coops. They argue over that all the time.

There has been a high of zero around here the last few days so the wife decided to put it out yesterday. They are her chickens so she does most of that sort of stuff. I didn't bother going out to look at it.
None of the chickens made it from what we can tell. Coop is gone but that is it.

The freezeproof waterer I created. Wrapped a 12’ piece of pipe heat tape around the bucket, insulated with fiberglass pipe insulation and protected with duct tape. Was -3 here and in single digits for over 40 hours. Bucket stayed thawed!

No sir! The good lord made them winter hardy! I have lamps set over their roosts with a thermaswitch set.
Second to that, feeding them corn before they roost will raise their body temps and keep them comfy at night...

I never had a problem with cold bit the lack of daylight shuts down laying. Having a light on a timer will keep them going through th winter. It stimulates their pituitary gland which regulates egg production from what I read.
Afaik as long as they only have about 4-6 square feet or so per bird in the coop you don't need a heat lamp. We had plenty of below zero temps. But if there's only a few chickens where they have too much room then maybe some extra heat would be warranted i dont know.

I'm really digging this thread. As a boy, I gathered the eggs but never had to actually build and maintain a flock/coop.
