BUY THE GREEN ONE. Sub 32" you'll never break an axle or damage diffs unless you're pulling out heavier vehicles in reverse and uphill. Reverse dana 30 high pinion w/ better ground clearance runs on the drive side of the ring gear teeth, 40%+ stronger than 1999+ w/ standard rotation, low pinion front diff. 8.25chy rear = mo betta butta than the m35. M35-7.562" w/ 8 ring gear bolts, 27 spline axles. 8.25chy is well, 8.25", 10 bolts, 29 spline axles. Manual is great asin/warner ax15, close ratio trans, good crawling gears. Autos are fine too, not overly complicated like the Grand Cherokees.  if it doesn't already have one, get a slip yoke eliminator kit for the rear driveshaft and call it a day.

Me too, they're buttery without being too fatty like Chinook. I did olive oil, salt/pepper lemon slices, a little dried dill, wrapped them tight in foil pouches and put them up on the top rack of the grill while I did the burgers and dogs. they were juicy and delicious with a little Garlic citrus aioli, (fancy mayo for the KY types on here). mine weren't nearly as photogenic as yours though.

But, Tatter, will the diffs stay all in one big piece or become finer, smaller pieces?

Keep it simple, 33" rubber, limited slip diffs or selectable lockers instead of automatic, lock down the suspension so you don't get axle wrap and tell the pre-ranger to keep his foot off the skinny pedal when the tires come off the ground. get a 99 or older to keep the high pinion front, and the 8.25 will handle it just fine.

You will want to avoid the dana 35 diff. most will be 8.25 Chrysler anyhow, but the easy tell is the rolled lip on the outer edge of the diff cover. d35 runs flat to the edge. A lot of the 4.0L XJ's have leaky coolant reservoirs, and some have been known to sell them for cheap because they think the head gasket is blown while in reality the res just blows steam and slow leaks when they come up to temp. simple fix and a good deal to be had if you can find them.

So Tate, been watching but would like some help,

What does the foot pedal actually do as for brakes? I see the cable attachment but to do what?
Foot pedal pulls the cable which collapses the spring, forcing the brake piston down. There's recycled tire tread on the bottom and watching them stop is a hoot as it's a smoke show every time

I also noted that the blue device seems to be the steering? But the big spring has me more confused also.
Main steering and brake system are on the same column

What does the axle rotate on? Bearings?
There is a center king pin and multiple washers. the cables route through the center shaft and pulleys and essentially pull the axle left to right

Do the cables ever pop off of the bearing?
funny you mention it. the last year my son drove, his shoe frayed the cable behind the cable stay and he lost his brakes and slammed into the hay bales at about 20mph that's the only time I've ever seen something like that though

What are the tires made of?
Fiberglass with a solid rubber outer ridge

Do they weigh the cars so they are all the same?  Can you put lead weight in your pockets?
Max weight of car and driver is 200lbs in stock class. weight differential cannot exceed 15+lbs rear over front but like pinewood derby, there are tactics. Load the rear as much as possible and have them lean way forward during weigh in so the differential can be slightly higher without breaking rules

With pine wood you have a max weight and the more weight was an advantage.
You can also leave off a tire to create less drag or resistance.

I can?t stop thinking of the blurr on the Little Rascals lol

She did pretty darn well, stayed focused, but hit the brakes early one time and sat up to check the competition another and wound up taking 16 out of 70. but she's got the bug now, and will be doing some rally races this summer and is looking to come back with a lot more experience next year.

GM 3977326 for the wire lock. I have some in MN if you can't find them. I'm working on the lock bolt too, but I think it's the same for the 9.25 Chrysler rear, like what's in a 1/2 ton (RC, w150, R1500 etc.) if you have any of those laying around check it out for fitment.

Top is correct here. Just get the new bolt and retainer tab and get on the adjuster nut with a punch. you can't over tighten the spanner there, and the other one is still locked in place, so you're really just re-establishing the preload for the carrier bearings. Loctite is your friend. (clean out the housing though, you don't want to push your luck w/ debris going through the bearings)

check resistance on your upstream O2 sensor. I had weird starts like you're describing, but if I didn't hold the key long enough to get it to fire it would go so far as to refuse to idle until it warmed up. turned out it had an O2 sensor that heated itself to get better cold start readings and would throw off the fuel mapping when it wasn't working properly. got a new O2 sensor and fixed that problem immediately.

The suburban LTZ and Escalade have the 6.0 but they suck for towing because of the air ride suspension. I would assume the high end Yukon and Tahoe are the same.

Get someone to sit in the truck, running w/ the tires on the ground and get low enough to see the steering under the front end. have them gently move the wheel back and forth without moving the tires and watch the movement in the tie rod ends, pittman arm (out of the steering box), idler arm and drag link ends. most likely all of those ends are shot. https://www.amazon.com/Steering-Suspension-Chevrolet-1988-1991-Adjusting/dp/B074Q38KKK/ref=au_as_r?_encoding=UTF8&Make=Chevrolet%7C47&Model=K1500%7C454&Year=1989%7C1989&ie=UTF8&n=15684181&newVehicle=1&s=automotive&vehicleId=9&vehicleType=automotive super cheap, I'm sure there are higher quality out there, but this is the 1st one I came upon. Knowing what I know about Chevrolet IFS, I would just do it all. you're experiencing bump steer and wander from worn out steering, most likely pittman arm and idler are shot. you should have very little to no movement in any of those connections.

That is true, but knowing he's already been through that wonderful experience, maybe we'll save that LubeLocker gasket for the next oil change :wink:

I had to bench bleed the GM master on my wagoneer for several hours... then got the power bleeder hooked up and still watched bubbles for another 1/2 hour until it was cleared. Older masters just aren't as well engineered and there's a lot of space for air pockets.

5.3L is 9.5-1, 6.2 is 11.5-1. I had them mixed up.

Dave, my wife had a 6.2l in a Denali. It wasn?t that we couldn?t afford the vehicle or the fuel. However, it annoyed me how much fuel it drank regardless.......

But, it did run well granted......
I don?t mean it in a negative manner but when ya really look at the cost difference in 14 mpg and 18 mpg for a average years driving.   $3.00 a gallon.  15000 miles a year that?s $2500 in fuel vs $3214 which really is only $700 bucks difference.  But it does hit you if you drive a lot more than that.   Or if your lookin for distance with out fill up. 

So if we talk about $700 bucks for that much HP knowing he likes Boost (we all like BOOST) I would say get the 6.2 and live it up

I had the joy of going to the body shop today because someone with questionable family lineage ran into the side of my truck and drove off with out a note or anything!  Right rear door is messed up so now the question do I turn it in on insurance,  pay for it or just drive it? Something for me to think about.

Depends on insurance. we've been hit in parking lots twice, and our insurance covered it all without raising our rates. (less deductible of course) Our un-insured motorist rider is pretty good. if it's just the door skin, and not any quarter panel stuff, I would just pay it out of pocket, depending on damage it might be less than your deductible would be.

I get the feeling selfish for asking, then you feel worse for being told you shouldn't feel guilty. Ask and receive, He can't help if we don't ask for it. I'm lucky my primary job isn't too physical, but I've been hurting pretty bad since the rear ender and the cooking gig has been rough. Asking for help has been a real struggle. You're definitely being prayed for my friend. Do you have anyone else there at the shop? I have a lot of calls from AZ and can direct traffic your way for installations if you like? I don't know if you take on diff work, but I have a pretty good track record for referrals.

I understand the pain felt about a project made by so much of your time and effort being senselessly destroyed in seconds.  Was her dad in the truck too? I'll echo this. I'm hoping the magnitude of her error has her speechless and in shock, not knowing what to say to you. Here's hoping they step up to the plate and take care of you.

I'll keep the dually for the weekend place and when I need to haul something heavier than I'm comfortable with in the 1/2 ton.

Maybe a sissy but it would most likely been one of the last things he did while working for that company....Place looks nice Tate. Since you like to mow grass, we are only a short drive and a long ferry ride away and have a couple mowers ready to go.

I know Bob, I didn't want him taking out my power lines either. My forearms wish he'd been gutsier though :rolleyes: I kinda miss the JD and mowing the 1.25 acre of the old place, since now it's about 10 min for the little strip out back. really don't mind mowing his mess to keep the front of the housing looking lived in.

So thinking of rewarding myself. Either a nice watch or another truck.

Thinking 1/2 ton gasser crew cab 4wd as a DD and parking the dually at the ranch.

Not sure I like the 2019 and may be able to get a deal on a 2018 Chevy/GMC.

I?d like to be able to tow 7000-8000 without turning 6000 rpms

Thinking 5.3 or would you guys recommend the 6.2

Might even consider cloth seats and cover them with ballistic seat covers so I can remove and wash them

Wondering how the Silverado compares to the Ford F-150 in terms of price and equipment and longevity?

Thoughts ?

Just make sure you get the 3.42 gear ratio towing package. the 3.08 and 3.23 options make the transmission hunt for gears constantly in town, and cause it to generate a lot of heat. Dad's trans was smoked in 2 months of general usage, no abuse, just didn't take it out of OD in town. Warrantied out of course, but pretty lame for a new truck. (2016) Both he and my co-worker are very happy now that they've changed them out to the 3.42. makes the trans and motor work together, not fight each other.
