Nevertheless, I think these were a good buy at $1100.

I think it was a fair price, once I get them tore down will know for sure.

I built my own engine stand years ago. Used 3 in square and just welded a tube on the top. About to mode that using a wheel hub. That should hold anything and spin easy. Just have to figure a crank system to turn it.

Yeah, I had a nice home brew one too at one time. Even had an oil catch pan below, the engine turn over part fit a 1/2” breaker bar and had tool rest pan hanging off the back. It was sold in my auction b4 moving.

I did ask about price difference and he said something about the rear one being more hp because it was older.....

However, when you look at components they have the same block casting number. So guessing many of parts are the same other than valvetrain maybe. To me it didn’t make any sense as they both need rebuilt and you adjust those parts as necessary for the build anyhow. So I just figured $550 each....

Charles, yes he wanted those and I didn’t care.

The rear one was from a front drive car so it has a rear sump pan. The front one has what they call a mid sump, hoping I can use that one as it’s in better shape but we’ll see.

I did try to mount the rear engine on on my 1/2 ton hf stand, after looking at it for 10 seconds I lifted motor back up with hoist. Pretty sure the half ton hf stand would have sheared off at some point. I’ll find a better stand on cL & bring it home.

Well, since I today purchased and drug home two of these monsters I thought I would close that other classified ad and start a build thread here. Seeing how I don't actually have the truck one of these are going into quite yet this seemed like a logical place to discuss.

So I had posted a CL ad looking for a date (what isn't that what everyone does on there as no one on CL has any money? JK) so I posted an ad wanting to buy a free spinning 500. After several days a guy named Glenn called me and said he thought he had 6 of them but non were confirmed. He has collected all of these and not sure exactly why even today. After chasing my tail some and helping several other guys confirm they had 472's and not 500's the weather turned nice and I drove to Elizabeth CO today and made a deal for these two 500's. Glen had the pan off of both and I was able to inspect the cranks which is what he did prior to my arrival not wanting to waste my time. They both were free turning and fairly clean. Glenn was a bit odd, even now I cannot figure out his pricing. He wanted $800 for the rear one and $400 for the front one. We settled on $1100 for the pair. Parts alone that I can see are useable on these would go for more than that if I wanted to part them out. Check ebay sometime and you will see what I mean.

I’d agree with that little 4 cyl however, I used to pull quite a bit of stuff around with my rubicon with 4.0l

68-76 preferably front wheel drive models as they have rear sump. Be very careful a lot of sellers with 472’s believe they have 500’s

I passed on the 73 eldorado today, he didn’t want to come to my terms yet. The other thing is I’m busy in shop currently and don’t need a vehicle in the way to part out. Have to go back next week as mom is having heart procedure so if he still has it when I get back maybe he’ll be more apt to take my offer....
Shawn post it up about when she is having that done so we all can pray for her pretty please

And

Are the girls out of school?? Denver teacher's strike affecting you guys?

Will do and no they have school, we're still far enough of a northern suburb to not be affected......

Shawn, dagonnit, you have me now wanting to buy up some 500 caddys.

I never looked into this great powerplant until you started all this fuss. I think I'll go out and score a few. At least you know where you can find a spare then.

Would be a great engine for a restored square body...

Correct, no real estate for a junk yard.

I did think about saving that turbo 400 transaxle and it was supposedly recently refreshed and new bell housing. Putting eyes on it this afternoon. Being front wheel drive it has correct oil pen for a truck build too.

I do have a couple other leads. One guy supposedly has several “500’s” in his shop but he hasn’t verified any of them to my knowledge. Then another one in Albuquerque but that’s 6 hours. I have time so there’s that too and I’m technically not in a hurry but would like this part of jigsaw squared away.

Stock bearings(if goodintite)=better than new timkens/moog off the shelf.
But, man, hard not to renew. I'd be trusting those things for a way long trip where I could scarcely work on the truck. Have to find a shop like yours...!

Technically I think most of us guys along your route have tools to swap them out....

Update:

Well guy near Norm and Nate has discovered (with my help) he is selling a 472 not a 500. So there’s that but if anyone needs a 472 caddy it can be had for a couple bills and those 472’s were no slouch either....

Have not strolled over to junk yard yet, high of mid teens yesterday and mid 20’s today is not my preference for strolling thru junk yards....

Did have another guy call me, name of Glen who lives an hour SE of me. Has 6 caddy big blocks and believes at least a couple are 500’s. Was a little hesitant to part with them but called me.... after some discussion and me offering to help him identify all 6 on what they actually were and rough year he seems to be ready to sell at least one. He agreed he does not like the cold either so we will wait until temps get back to 50’s or so.

Stickers, Maybe in the garage but not on rolling stock. But I guess that is just my opinion.

I typically do not put stickers on my vehicles, I have placed them on racks in the shop and the inside of the side walk in door to the enclosed race car trailer...
