Dave, what is the plan for the fireplace? Reason I ask is at our farm we had a real fireplace then put in an insert (wood burning) & we took down our nice wood mantle because of it possibly catching fire. I then had my welder who was a wrought iron guy make us a beautiful mantle with scroll work.

A solid one piece third member that mechanically fixes the axles. 100% direct drive on both shafts. Zero slippage. Maximum torque and maximum tire wear....

OK, so I forgot how squirrely a jeep with a manual trans and a rear mechanical locker can be! LOL, I also had to take back something I told Tate and order a set of lockouts. That front 60 with detroit is going to need lockouts versus drive slugs. I'm itching for the larger tires but it's nice to have the jeep in the correct rpm range after each shift too. Other than the drivers side e-brake being adjusted a little too tight the break in went well this morning. No issues and after several runs and around 25 miles the noisey e-brake loosened up enough to be quit once more. All is well on the jk front.... As far as Norm and weights I won't get into an arguement with him but I bet he can tell me how much his high school sweet heart weighed.....

Well, I figure if nothing else Charles will be envious of my redeckedness.... So in my huge workspace the other day when I brought the lathe home I leaned the chip tray up against my high dollar zuke air filtration system. I was out wrenching on the xj (actually breaking my new nut zert tool) when Baylee & I heard a loud commotion only to see the expensive chinaman handle let loose and the fan fly to the ground. So since it’s been working extremely well for the $20 I spent building it I decided some no cost fixin was in order. Here we have it, better than new & definitely more rednecked....

All those rocks along the top of the pond will give the heron and other fish eating birds a place to stand. I tried fish in our small waterfall pond and the birds kept the fish sellers in business. I managed to relocate a couple heron but the neighbor and sheriff decided I wouldn't be shooting any more of them.

Looks good Shawn - so, essentially, you're heat treating the new gears/assembly etc. while knocking off the burrs etc.?
Essentially yes, granted the gears were already heat treated (side note my grandfather did this for a living in the heat treat at Warner gear which is now known as auburn gear). However, following this process will help eliminate any softening of the gears or burnt bearings. Which would then lead to premature failure possibly. Edit: further side note, Randy’s owns machines that came out of auburn gear. Tate, how did I know this fact? Btw my grandfather retired from there in the early 70’s & passed away in late 90’s, Randy’s didn’t acquire machines until maybe ten years or so ago.

You know Charles, if you're only attempting to plant an acre the actual amount of rainfall wouldn't be that important as long as you have a good well. At my farm in Indiana we installed a windmill powered hand pump which the design also could build pressure. IE you could run a small irrigation off of it if you had wind. The amish still make them and some have them plumbed into their house and a pressure tank for indoor plumbing.

Installed the JK rear driveshaft and pulled the front stock driveshaft this morning before it starts to warm up. I believe after Baylee gets off we are pulling her xj rock sliders to mod them with some outrigger tubes and new paint.

So after getting the front end buttoned up we moved on to the rear and since Great Lake Off Road makes these bomb proof girdles for spicer yokes (and I know that guy personally ) so I decided to use a set on our rear yoke. GLO makes them for the GM corporate 14 bolt and has the Sterling rear axle yoke in development at the moment. Cough, cough SQ D...... So after adding a bit of red loctite the low profile bolts were torqued into place. Normally on a 9 rear I would run one of our pinion guards too. However, for this build I am not. I'm trying to be weight conscious.     Then I pulled the front shaft, threw it back into two wheel drive and parked it back in its bay to wait until tomorrow morning. At that time when it's cool out I will do a break in process on the new rear set up. Essentiallly driving it for 8-10 miles no longer than 15 minutes and then parking it in a cool spot for a cool down of 30 minutes. I will do this several times. After 300 or so miles I will be changing out the gear oil for some good high dollar lube probably in a 75w -140 weight. The deep gear set will be subject to some heat which is part of the reason for the extended break in process.

Even marked the two sections just in case you had to take it apart which I did not.  And sorry, I got in such a hurry I forgot to snap a picture of the new flange for the t-case output. Threw a little gasket sealer on internal splines of the flange and torqued it down to 150# (range is 140-160)

OK, so finally the rear new cv rear driveshaft showed up late Friday along with the new t-case flange. High angle drivelines did the work and Jess does quality work but he's taking quite a bit longer than normal. So Saturday morning the wife and I went for coffee and picked up the box from our drop box. Packaged fairly well.   and yep, that's right using Ford cv joint head w/ bolts..

If it were mine I would fix the auto, I just paid $600+ for a new rear shaft in the jk. Not to mention the trans issue is probably a half a day fix for a guy who knows what he’s doing & knows which parts to have on stand by. Nothing against you or your mechanics but if they don’t deal with that regularly then you get what I’m saying.

So question for the masses, my shop is small. This lathe will never go back to be 36 inches between the uprights. The prior owner installed the new 24 inch bed but he had no welding capabilities. The chip pan is sheet metal. I’m considering shortening the pan and in the process welding up the two former leg holes. I don’t run coolant on anything, it’s messy and for low production work not necessary really in my opinion. My miter band saw has the pump and sump factory installed but I’ve never used it. So from my view shortening this is more a matter of aesthetics and maybe the next owner wants coolant? The only thing I’m slightly concerned about is mig welding it and warping the pan slightly. I could probably weld a pice of 1” channel under the seam to help mitigate that too come to think of it. So what say ye knuckleheads cut and weld or leave it be?

  Here it was as of 3pm today, was able to get a couple hours on it. Let me clarify that last statement, two hours cleaning rearranging my small work space and half hour of assembly. Still need to mount motor, install both belts and the covers. Then maybe or maybe not address wiring, may get it going to for a bit then do that on a slow day once kids are back in school. I did get all 4 leveling bolts removed, odd looking socket head cap screw as the head is tapered toward the wrench provision & they were 9/16 fine thread. Took a little penetrating oil, some heat and a couple raps with a 2# er on a small pipe wrench to get them free.

If your really going to get rid of that setup let me know, I would be interested in buying it from you.
One other thing to consider, can everyone that you plan on letting operate SqD, do they know how to drive a stick if you do convert it? Something to consider! If you are out somewhere and get hurt can the person with you drive the truck?
Funny you mention that, I just read a statistic that only 18% of the American population can drive a manual.

Made my first purchase from lathe.com this morning which is Scott Logan's website, I order a manual and parts list. They allow you to either just download a manual ie no shipping cost or add shipping cost and you can download the manual and they will then ship you a printed spiral bound copy too. I opted for both, I like hard copies in shops, it's like wet dew in the morning and just smells right!
First project on this will be a mod to Baylee’s XJ’s steering. The bolts need drilled for press in grease zerks as the xj has become a little squeaky as of late.

So think we figured my Mom’s issues last night. Her nurse came in at 3am to find her stats had dropped way off 70, they put two different machines on her to help bring them back up. Still couldn’t get her up past 90 & called Dr in. Keeping her at least another day and doing a sleep study, severe sleep apnea. Essentially she is breathing so shallow she can’t remove carbon dioxide, at 3 this morning she was out of it again. As they raised her stats she started coming back around. Explains her constant being tired, weight gain, incoherent at times etc. she’s not getting sleep & when she is it’s labored.

Eventful day, Jeep is still down waiting on DS which is supposed to show up tomorrow if fedex doesn’t screw that up & I’m not hopeful.
So took my better half to work, on the way there one of my moms friends called. My mother lost her mind, literally did not know where she was or who she was but she thought she was 24! EMS took her to hospital, initially they thought she had a stroke although she had passed all the cognitive tests, raise arms, smile etc.
So after several hours & speaking with a neighbor friend we think she had a severe migraine, potentially took too many of some med as well. As of this evening she knew who she was & who my wife and I are. Kudos to my wife and her management / nurse skills. I had to go to the mountain to pick up the lathe & was out of cell service most of the day.
I got this inspected and picked up
On way home grabbed wife unit & we discussed my mom further. She is 69, for some time we’ve questioned if she didn’t have early onset Alzheimer’s? So she was also diagnosed with a UTI, my nurse wife read directly from an Alzheimer’s website that in elderly with early onset getting a UTI can cause the dementia to is essence flare up. So there’s that, she was admitted and will be let go tomorrow. They ran some tests, mri & blood work up. So we’ll see where this goes.
I’ve seen uti cause altered mental status on several occasions. I can see where it could cause an increase in the outwardly visible symptoms if one were suffering from dementia but I don’t think it’s necessarily an indicator of the disease.

I would agree to an extent. This is just another odd event, several people around her have come to my wife and I concerned here in the last 6-12 months of her increasing odd behaviors. She even personally knows something isn’t right as she’s been to a neurologist in last 6 months on her own accord. Add in it her mother had it and well we are concerned. Part of the reason I call her every couple days and have been working with an estate attorney for several months now getting things in order. I will say that yesterday morning when things were going to crap it appeared in a hurry it was nice to know I had documents backing making medical deacisions for her. Those are now screenshots & saved to my phone too. JR, it’s a Logan 10 x 24 with new old stock bed, new motor and some new gears. I am writing about it in tools section.

Got the lathe home and unloaded onto shop floor (threw ramp down and slide it out), long day. Inspection of unit went well. Guys wiring was a bit sloppy but it runs. I will clean that up, he did use nice switches and electrical parts though. Lathe is pretty tight, the left cover was busted and someone tried to weld it. I’m going to find a solid replacement & swap it out. Back lash is about half a turn on the Y axis, so not great but not a full turn so definitely useable. It disassembled easily, older retired guy has 5 lathes roughly this size & this was worst one by far. He’s a former marketing executive who’s main client was Coca Cola. I got along with him well & we had a great discussion / banter as we broke this down. He wanted $1200 for this unit & I paid him that no haggling on my part. I believe at first he thought he was going to have to break the unit down & well I just kinda took over and he let me. Very helpful and I’m happy so far with my purchase.

Shawn I’d love to have a lathe about that size. I have a lot to learn and haven’t run one since metal shop in high school.
Keep me in mind if you get your new shop and want to off load that one.
