Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Kids and Sports
« on: July 16, 2015, 01:00:28 PM »
So this is a little take off from Don's CIEMR in Duramaxdarren's "Is it me" post. In it he made some excellent points about kids and introducing them to failure (and everything else he said about society!!!). But my comment is specific to kids and sports and the utter nonsense of "everyone gets a trophy" BS that infects sports (and apparently bible camp too!). I have three kids, they have all played sports at one level or another over the years (my youngest is just entering HS and continues to play soccer).

I think team sports can be really great for kids for a variety of reasons. I played hockey, baseball and soccer (hockey in college) so am familiar with the good and bad of team sports. Ultimately we all know the benefits to kids playing on a team, getting along, the "team" being bigger than the individual yada yada yada. But I think the REAL benefit of team sports is that it teaches kids how to lose! (Right along the lines of Don's point). I think as parents we all teach our kids how to win. We praise every little thing kids do from their first steps, their first words, etc. They color on the wall and we (often) say "oh what a nice drawing!"  ::)

but what a team sport can teach a kid (if we let it) is how to lose. How to dust yourself off after getting your ass beat on the field/rink/court and get back out there and try harder. If the other team worked harder, prepared better, they deserve to win. And we do no one any favors by pretending that the losing team is just as deserving of a trophy than the winning team. Does ANYONE remember who got the silver medals in the Olympics? Why was this latest World Cup so important to the women's team? Because they LOST in the finals in 2011 and hadn't made the finals since they won it in 1999. Did they feel good about having lost it in 2011? Um...I didn't hear any of them say that. And the losers didn't look all that happy about losing either. THAT'S LIFE DA** IT!

Life will kick you in the a** and if you have been coddled as a kid, told you are great no matter what, if you've never been challenged or had to work hard to get something then how will you possibly react when that job interview goes south? How will you react when that business deal you worked so hard on falls apart? Will you curl up in a ball and refuse to try again? Or will you say "Gee, the other guy/team/whatever worked harder than I did, they were better prepared and I da*n well better make sure that doesn't happen again!" THAT'S what team sports can teach kids. But only if we let them. If we coddle and give everyone a trophy, give everyone a medal and pretend that its all the same (don't keep score and other nonsense perpetuated by liberals who probably always got their butt's kicked on whatever field they played on!!!) then we will fulfill the liberals dream to lower the bar of achievement to the lowest common denominator. And in the REAL WORLD, that threshold is a dangerous place to be as people and as a country.

My son won a team championship in hockey where the prize was simply a medal. He values that cheap-*ss medal more than he does the tournament trophy he got for coming in second place in a tournament he played at. As he told me, "I knew we lost the tournament so the big trophy was pretty meaningless (exact same trophy as the winning team just a different plate on it saying "Runner Up"). But the medal meant we were the best that year."  I say give the winners their due and let the losers go back to the practice field knowing they lost to try to improve and do better next time. It will make ALL of them better. And it will make our society better.

Rant off.  ::)

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Re: Iran Deal
« on: July 15, 2015, 08:22:26 PM »
One big problem

When we free up that 150 billion, the Iranians are going to immediately purchase the Russian Anti-aircraft/anti missile system they almost bought a couple years ago.

There are only two ways of attacking that system other than a ground assault

1. Stealth fighters

Israel doesn't have any

or

2. Tactical nuclear weapons...

Thanks Don.....I was curious about the repercussions of this from a tactical perspective. Might another virus/hack provide some time to get us to past the 2016 election?

Of course that assumes the US elects an AMERICAN and not a liberal.

Coffee Induced Early Morning Rant / Iran Deal
« on: July 14, 2015, 03:03:21 PM »
Can anyone tell me what is good about this deal for the US? I am being serious here. I have read a bunch on it, I see Iran cheering (first thing that concerns me), I have read Israel's response (another thing that SERIOUSLY concerns me). but what I can't find is anything that tells me what is GOOD for America in this deal. How does ANYONE believe that THIS TIME we can trust the Iranians? We haven't been able to since the ouster of the Shah but NOW they are playing straight with us. Really? Wanna buy a bridge?!!

My daughter texted me this AM and asked me about it and I said (in addition to the fact that I can't see what's good for the USA) it appears Obama is just scrambling to be able to say he has done something diplomatically. But I can't for the life of me get what benefit there is beyond the BS.

Can anyone help me? If I am missing something I would love to know.

1455
You know the scary part is that a lot of this was "known" (meaning that we KNEW we didn't know) before the election. Yet so many lemmings still voted for this nitwit. I remember getting in an argument at a party with a couple of people before the 1st election and I said I wouldn't vote for him. I had a woman so dismissively look at me as if I was some total Neanderthal.....I said "I am concerned about his past with Rev. Wright, his associations with Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn as well as some of his comments since becoming a Senator. I don't care if he's black, brown or green!" She replied "I don't know who those people are." So I said "so let me get this straight....I mention some people that have been significant in Obama's life, who are also people who dislike if not hate America. I bring them up as a concern for why I won't vote for him. YOU don't know who they are, but I am the one who has a problem??!!!" She just walked away...obviously not a clue what to say.

The next guy was a drunk who got in my face screaming that I was a racist for not voting for him. If not for the fact that it wasn't my house and my wife and a friend pulling me back it would have ended very differently.  >:(. To me there are few more hateful things to say about someone than to say they are a racist.

but all these people blindly voted for him in spite of what was known and about the even more (as your post reflects) that was UNKNOWN!!! I am scared to think what we will find out over the next 20 years about this guy. If we make it.

Don words are meaningless at a time like this. I have had my share of "are you f'ing kidding me funerals???" Where you try to make sense of it but you cant. And I know that you have too....probably more than me. But all you can do is make a promise to the Man above that you will help those children. You will help guide them as best you can. You will remind them of the love that their Mom had for them. Because in the end this is their path, and no matter how hard, no matter how much you and your church family will help, they need to walk it. And they will. With the support of a special caring group, they will. And while I won't be so presumptuous to say they will be the better for it (no child would EVER be better by losing a parent) given the alternative they will be better for having you and all your parishioners in their lives. God bless you ALL as you face this struggle for the next 15 or more years. Those little ones need that help. And I am sure you will all help provide it.

If it is any solace to you my best friend is a crazy high end builder. He deals with changes to projects that would make a tetotaller start drinking. But hus clientele is often known for money that can be weighed by the freight car and brains that wouldn't show up on a gram scale. So he told me about a bathroom he did that by the time they were done putting in radiant heat....tearing it all out to move walls...putting in the special towel heating racks....then moving another wall 6" or so....Yada yada yada...when he was done it was a nice $600K bathroom. Thank God in heaven you're not married to that woman!   I told him for that I want a personal servent to wipe my a**. But his client is happy. We lived in an f'd up world some times.

Don- (and I am going to apologize in advance....nothing worse than some clown sitting on a 'puter questioning your work while you're doing it and posting it all for us to see and learn from!  ::)). Could you turn the whole upper latch piece 180 degrees....put the catch on the bar up the side of SD and have the "handle" on the rack/carrier? I realize the foot you attached the handle is larger than the foot for the catch assembly ( so more fabrication....more pictures....LOL) but it might prevent it being opened by a branch etc. I totally get that the bottom latch would keep it closed so it may not be needed but figured as I am sitting here throwing grenades I might as well go all in.  ;D

Really great work as always. Is there any risk that a branch running down the side of SD could open that top latch? Or does it have some sort of safety to prevent that? (I'm reading on my phone so things aren't always as obvious as on a larger screen).  ::)

Now this is a refreshing story (nice to see one that ends well when so many don't)....in so many ways. Lynn Russell, the former CNN anchor and her husband were on a trip in Albuquerque, NM when an armed robber forced his way into their room in an attempt to rob her. She gave her husband her purse in the process and he pulled out a gun and shot and killed the dirtbag, while getting shot 3 times himself. Fortunately he survived the shooting.

I like her comments afterwards to the news media about: the 2nd Amendment, what she says unequivocally about criminals having guns, an if you don't want to arm yourself then don't but stfu!

Oh, and lastly....her husband saved the citizens of NM (and who knows where else) the cost of housing this dirtbag as well as who knows what other societal costs over the next X number of years!

Financial Prep / Re: Purchasing bullion
« on: July 09, 2015, 12:22:46 PM »
The only downfall with buying smaller denominations of metals is the premiums are higher.   Rough example a 1oz gold coin at $1200/oz  will cost somewhere around $1250 with the sellers premium. Whereas 10 1/10oz coins would cost you closer to $1450/oz.  and also if you bought a kilo bar you might get it for $1205/oz.

One thing to think about that an old timer told me is after a collapse Or a return to a gold and silver backed financial system you could carve off a piece of your gold coin to make smaller denominations.  That's where the term bits came from as in a "two bit no good such an such".

This assumes people have a way to assure your gold is legit.  I imagine fraud wasn't as rampant back then as it is now. Tungsten filled bars etc.

Thanks Husker- I have not bought gold/silver directly so have not dealt with the premiums you need to pay for smaller purchases. That makes sense though. But you hit the nail with my concern re how to break off a bar and would you (or the seller you are dealing with) be able to "trust" the value etc.

Ultimately I think precious metals have a place in ones financial portfolio. I don't think anyone should put 100% into it along the lines of what Dawg mentioned. I think his post of the "range of possible outcomes" was very well articulated.

Ultimately we have lots of things that we do in life to "protect" us against possible bad scenarios- we have extra food on hand for if a storm hits and we can't get to the store. We have car insurance and fire insurance so that if we have a hit there we have a way to "rebuild" (get the car fixed, have the house rebuilt). Ultimately we all need to look at our specifics and determine what we need to do to protect ourselves from all sorts of disasters, and what is right for a couple with no kids that live in the southwest will be vastly different than a couple with kids that lives in the snowbelt. But we all need to prepare for various "attacks" and ensure that our families are the best prepared they can be to weather those storms. Sites like this can be so helpful because we all learn from other thoughtful people on a wide range of subjects.

Let me know what you think when you get it. I hope you find it helpful.

Excellent post Dawg IMHO.

So with the global and domestic situation being what it is, I find I am revisiting books I had read before to try to reiterate lessons I know/should know better. And this book is one I think deserves a place in everyone's library for preparedness. This is a book that was written originally in 1935 when all the US was in a much more agriculture based system. And while my true plan involves about 50 acres or more of land, the author shows how you can make enough to sustain a family on 5 acres.

The other thing I like is that he covers so much more than just how to grow food. From water improvements to putting in septic systems and far far more. Moreover its $8 on Amazon. AND its a book that you will have on your shelf to refer to if the grid goes dark. I highly recommend it.

I have a question for the gold buyers here. I see the rationale for buying gold bullion but I also wonder whether 1 ounce bars makes the most sense in a SHTF scenario. A 1 oz. bar will be worth a LOT and it won't be that easy to "get change", or at least "change" that you want (paper money etc.). So I am thinking that coins that may be in 1/10th ounce or 1/4 ounce might make sense as well. Then you are not always dealing in an instrument that is worth much more than you may want to spend for whatever you are buying. I think that same rationale makes sense with silver as well given that you can get even smaller amounts in silver coins.

The other reason I like that idea (buying smaller amounts more often as opposed to waiting for X months and then buying a larger amount) is that you can apply a dollar cost averaging approach to building up your stash. If you are familiar with the term then you get it but for anyone unsure of it- by setting a specific dollar investment amount that you will make each month you are "dollar cost averaging" which lowers you average cost as the price fluctuates over the period of time you are investing. In the silver chart that was posted the average cost over the past 12 months was approximately 17.28 per ounce. If you had invested $500 a month then your average cost per ounce would have been $17.11 per ounce, below the average cost of silver over that 12 month period. This strategy works best in volatile markets which precious metals certainly falls in to. But as with all things like this YMMV.

JR I have the Husky version in my Yukon. I REALLY like the front seat ones. A thick rubber, very pliable, very thick and fit nicely. They hold a ton of water/snow/mud/etc. That said the rear seat ones are much harder, thinner plastic and seem to mis-shape more easily which leaves gaps for stuff to fall through. Granted it extends the whole width of the vehicle as opposed to the front seat ones which cover the floor in front of each seat individually. But given that the rear seats have been where the kids sit (and drop food etc.) they aren't great. I have not felt/picked up the weather tech ones but I would see if any auto parts stores/ retailers have both versions for you to touch/feel etc. Maybe the Husky's have changed the formula for the rear seat ones, mine are prob 8-10 years old but if the rear seat one is still that hard molded plastic I would try to find an alternative. YMMV

One day I have an Apache escort...Regular Armee guys. They are escorting me while I go in to do an extraction of some SF dudes. I maintained my airspeed until I was almost overhead, then did that maneuver, then flared hard enough to stick the aft gear on the ground then lowered the thrust until the front wheels touched. All that in the span of a few seconds. The apache guys thought I had just crashed! So the SF dudes hop on and like 10 seconds, while the Apaches are coming back to see if I crashed, I pulled pitch and come out of that LZ like a rocket. I gave the code word and they tucked in on me as I accelerated to around 160 knots, but they couldn't keep up, so we slowed to 150 or 155, can't remember.

Ok....let me just say....that is so f'n cool!!! AND I'm sure the SF guys you were picking up were glad to know that their ride had brass ones and could get in and out w/o a lot of lollygagging. Damn man!

Also curious....where is that LZ? Here in the states?

I should start this by saying I honestly have no idea how something like this would roll out. I actually PM'd Don the other day asking if he would post a thread of some of what he saw in Baghdad to try to learn more about the likely what-if's. So I make no claim to having ever been there/done that. That said I think anyone who has thought through scenarios like this and has been thoughtful can try to add some pieces to the overall puzzle. And ultimately I think all of us can learn from threads like this so I like them. Its funny given my comment below but Don's mention of water for Boston really put a lot in a different frame of reference for me. I am always thinking land based but water travel can make a LOT of sense for a LOT of reasons. Anyway....just didn't want to give any impressions that I have ever been through anything like what folks that have been in the ME have seen and I wanted to be clear on that.

with all the water access in Pittsburgh a small boat and outboard might be a good idea. If she is near the river you could get there and get upstream/downstream pretty easily. You could stash your vehicle in a bunch of places a couple of miles up or downstream I am guessing. And I also think most ferals won't have boats and/or would be focused elsewhere. If you want serious quiet a canoe with a trolling motor might be a good idea. Maybe one of those folding canoes.

I have thought how handy a simple tow hitch crane would be a bunch of times. While not as permanent as what you are contemplating for your tire change it would be able to do double duty for loading/unloading stuff in the bed. It also could be done to easily fold up/come apart for storage.

This is the "kind" of thing I was thinking about but for you it would be easy to run the winch line to control/lift the tire.

http://www.cabelas.com/product/Auto-ATV/Car-Truck-SUV/Auto-Towing-Hitches/Cargo-Carriers-Racks%7C/pc/104796180/c/630501480/sc/104780880/i/104253480/Viking-Solutions-Rack-Jacktrade-Utility-Lift/1850536.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fcargo-carriers-racks%2F_%2FN-1118204%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104253480

I will add a couple of small things that won't help you in the larger picture you are asking but may help with a small aspect of what you are thinking about.

1. Google earth is really good for planning this kind of stuff. You can really focus in on a route and see alternatives. Street view also provides some of that on the ground stuff that is hard to do. I would start there....come up with 4 or 5 routes that all make sense- determine strengths and weaknesses of each one and then spend a weekend with "on the ground" looking. Of course one thing to realize is that traffic patterns likely all change on a weekend, and ultimately would not be anywhere close to normal in a real SHTF scenario. (Think of the traffic leaving a city for a blizzard/hurricane/etc.) You might find that getting back INTO the city is actually the easiest part and its the bug out after with her that is more problematic. Especially if you are moving quickly shortly after the "event" occurs but before all the stores have been looted. I figure in these scenarios there is a 24-48 hour window of opportunity to get in and get out before the ferals start attacking travelers as they will be more likely focused on looting their local CVS for chips. But I could obviously be DEAD wrong. Which is scary so the need exists to prepare for all possibilities.

2. (and I know this is a no-brainer) Look for obvious chokepoints. When I worked in Boston I had a few routes that I could get home that were all backroads. But I also worked hard to find routes that would not take me over any bridges. It would be a very simple terrorist plot to blow up a few bridges between Boston and my home (west of Boston) that would bring commerce to a complete halt in Boston. I think bridges are two types of chokepoints- bridges you have to go over can be blown up. Bridges you have to go under give someone the element of height and knowing where you must pass. And while highways often provide wide roads they would likely be either clogged with traffic but they also all funnel to bridges (over and under) that (usually) don't have medians etc. where you could go around stalled/dead vehicles.

I have also gone through similar scenarios for getting away from where I live although my first plan is a bug in as it is pretty rural in general here (as compared to many places in the east).

Really awesome video. Thanks for sharing it!
I have to believe the guys attaching that cargo sling at night with that bird right above their heads had a pretty decent pucker factor going on.  :o And I imagine every bit as bad for the pilots trying to keep it steady!

This is very helpful thanks.....do they make metal cutting blades that can be resharpened or are they all carbide tippedal blades that have to be tossed when the carbide tips wear out?

What are you building? / Re: DIY Foundation Advice

I am no engineer so won't pretend to know the psf ratings but I have worked a lot of construction and built a lot over the years. I think you CAN use 2x6's but they will be more springy on the floor than 2x8's. And standard would be 16 oc not 24. I agree with the sonotube for the footings. They are easy and work well.

http://www.homedepot.com/p/SAKRETE-10-in-x-48-in-Concrete-Form-Tube-65470006/100350260

One question though before you go there though....does it make a difference in your area if you have footings versus putting this on some concrete block from a tax perspective? A lot of places if you just put it on blocks it is not a permanent structure so you are either not taxed or taxed very differently. If you use footings etc. then it becomes permanent and adds to the tax rolls. While you use it as a gun shed no real worries if it moves slightly etc. Its only when you decide to plumb it would you need the structure to be mounted more permanent and then you could pour the footings, etc. And even if you wanted it on the same spot you could make "rollers" of logs.....roll it off to one side, pour the footings and then roll it back on.

But assuming you have a well drained area you can put the cinderblocks down and then build your 2x8 frame on top of that. If you really wanted to save construction costs you could make two 8x24 sections bolted/framed together. Then you are buying 8' 2x8's as opposed to 16' 2x8's.

If the site is not that well drained I would start with a frame of Pressure Treated 2x8 or 2x10 in something like an 18 x 26 shape. Then fill that with gravel, peastone etc. for drainage then put your cinderblocks down and build the frame on it. While there are no freeze thaw issues you don't want a hard rain washing away dirt for the cinderblocks and then causing your shed to shift.

And you can do either 2x6 or 2x4 stud walls. Although if you are putting in a "loft" that may become a bedroom at some point it might make more sense to do 2x6 walls. Or at least 2x6 walls on that "half" of the structure. Especially if you are storing lots of sardine cans up there.  ;)

Love this list...

Some other things I always have:

Rope- from paracord through larger sizes
binges (um....darn auto correct! I meant BUNGEES!)
Flat metal straps (to fashion hangers of varying needs)
Bulbs and fuses (but I think this was said)
Tire patch/plug kit

*Sheesh....the problem with looking at this thread on my phone. I think everything I mentioned was covered. Well except the metal straps. Sheesh I'll shut up now.... ;D

After waaaaayyyy too many hours than I care to admit to  :o I have reached the end of the BigD threads and am "caught up". Don't tell my wife okay?  ;)

I am literally astonished with the care and thought you have put into this. Thanks so much for sharing it!! WOW!

But of course, being an internet troll (well not a troll but someone watchin' and thinking about someone else's build instead of doing anything myself to further the knowledge base  :-[) I wanted to suggest a couple of things (and you have probably already thought about them but figured I would ask-

I like the way Chebbie and GMC have the side corner steps in the rear bumper corners to make access to the bed easier. I am wondering if you thought about cutting something like that into it? I believe you have the space in the face of the bumper no? I know you are putting a ladder on too but just thinking it might be an easy way to grab something from the bed. Of course, if you're doing the full on open door instead of the tailgate maybe only having a "step" on the "open" side of said door would make sense.

I also wonder about putting a "foot" (saying "foot" cause "hi-lift catchy point" sounded weird) on the bottom of the bumpers (front and back) so if you use the hi-lift as a jack it is not sitting on flat metal. Instead the "teeth" of the hi-lift lifting point would sort of "fit" a similarly serrated sort of foot on the bottom of the bumper for safety. Ask me how I know about safety when a very heavy truck is precariously balanced on a hi-lift extended way up and the hi-lift is engaging on flat metal.  :o No...wait...scratch that... don't ask me. I will start sweating and curl up in a fetal position....again.

Lastly and I promise... the last....well for this post anyway  ::) are you cutting in a wiring/power port for the trailer in the hitch? I didn't see a cutout for that. Figure I would mention it now before its all painted, etc.

As for starting Big D I don't care when you start it. Would I like to see it? Yup....but I think you cited some pretty good reasons for not doing it...."before its time".

(Yup....see what I did there....just tried to get on Don's good side by agreeing with him on the start-up so he wouldn't slam me for being a couchriding internet troll....or at least that's what I was trying to do....ha!)
