Mother of all cool guns!
« on: December 08, 2015, 01:44:56 PM »
Last night will be a night to remember.
I was sitting in my office writing something on this site when the two boys followed by mom came in with a long brown box with the words "Sig Sauer" on it!

She bought me that Sig 716, 7.62 AR gun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had lusted over the thing back in the spring but couldn't bring myself to pay the steep asking price. She paid attention, then paid for the gun! Then gave it to me for a joint anniversary/Christmas gift

Here it is:

That fits perfectly

Nice grip with a covered compartment, great furniture and very tight. Takes a concentrated push to get the pins loose in this gun.

Think I'll loosen up those pins some this weekend!

Already, I am thinking about which sort of optic I want for it???

I like holo sights

But this is a .308

has mo-range

So a scope

Like a 30mm tube, mil dot reticle, and what magnification

Granted I am shooting a what, 16" barrel here??

So no M1A, but gonna have serious smack down at 500 yards

It's the tucky. Translation: Not many long range shots

So what a 3X9???

Fixed 4X???

Redfield, Leopold? cheapo Bariska?

Holo + Magnifier?

Co witnessed with flip up sights?

After Christmas, and after getting SquareD running and whatever else, then optics time.

Give me some time to wear it in properly!

ACOG has 308 based reticles. This is just a quick snatch and grab I did since I'm relaxing on the couch.

https://www.trijicon.com/na_en/products/product2.php?id=ACOG&mid=5.5%20x%2050

As for holosights, an EoTech paired with a G.33 magnifier would work out fine for mid-range shooting. The one I listed below has 4 dots (1 MOA) each for aiming points out to 600 yds or 548m. Which ever you prefer to call it.

http://www.eotechinc.com/holographic-weapon-sights/holographic-hybrid-sight-I-exps3-4-with-g33sts-magnifier

If you wish to throw a scope on it, a 2.5-10 or 4-16x Vortex would fit the bill quite nicely while not breaking the wallet down further.

HD Gen 2: (their top of the line models, which means pricier but nicer)

3-18x
http://www.vortexoptics.com/product/razor-hd-gen-2-3-18x50-riflescope-with-ebr-2c-moa-reticle

PST:
2.5-10x
http://www.vortexoptics.com/product/vortex-viper-pst-2-5-10x32-ffp-riflescope-with-ebr-1-moa-reticle

4-16x
http://www.vortexoptics.com/product/vortex-viper-pst-4-16x50-ffp-riflescope-with-ebr-1-moa-reticle

The reticle choice is yours between MOA or MIL. I personally prefer MILs, some people prefer MOA. Side note Vortex does use true MOA not the IPHY (Inch Per Hundred Yards) that some makers use.

Of course, there are lots of other scope makers and each have their pros and cons. So in the end you are going to have to snag Duane or the wee Rangers, HH6 or by yourself, and venture forth into the scary world of Cabela's gun counter and their optics stand or Gander Mountain or whatever you have around you and proceed to check out scopes or other optical choices until you find the one that says "duh, pick me."

I've got a NF NXS 3.5-15 that is great. Might be a good fit for the Sig.

Nice!

Now get those pins loosened up a bit!
And a preliminary range report.

After a few (hundred) rounds you may have a better idea of what you want for an optic.

I did get a muzzleloader once from HH6 but not a Sig.
I just don't want to wind up missing a digit or limb.  I can sometimes get in a hurry to get results.

Sweet Don!  She's a keeper. I'd go NXS with a reflex sight on a 45 degree buddy mount for quick shots up close

I'm not learned in modern scopes. Been all up in ACOG's and things like that for some time...no magnification.
My shooting of the tactical nature has been mostly from a moving platform at maybe 150 meters and I would just walk the bullets into my target.
But before all that fun, I used to spend some quality time behind my trusty and ancient Tasco 4 X 12 on my NM barreled M1A.
With this Sig having a shorter barrel and being lighter, I could see it as my everyday long gun. That suggests the same old up close and personal shooting I have been doing, but being a .308 and tagging along with a host of boneheads (You guys) who are shooting stretched .22LR, I would be the guy with the reach out potential.
So that means to me something of around 4X-10X for shooting out to say 600 meters, but mostly, say 250. Now being a carry weapon that might find time in the gun rack on Sarge, I don't need it to look like the back to the future car.
And a couple of sights like the offset thing bulks the gun up. I'd like one optic on the top and an attachment for a roast beef sandwich on the side of the rails where I can get to it quickly for those shots where the stomach is talking at cha... Maybe a cup holder on the other side for the quoffee.

Make sense? :o

So drop a 4-16x in a QD mount, that way you can always take it off and throw the flipup sights into operation and you should be covered. As for the options to carry your roast beef and quoffee, well those go in your assault pack.

With that weapon, you only need a dry box full of matches...........find a field full of steers and drop your roastbeef right there!  Much more mobile, and with this group of stretched out pea shooters, not much will be left.  One of us boneheads will be your coffee holder, so just put a quality optic on top, soft tipped bullets in the mag and some salt in your pocket to either sprinkle over the roast or rub in our "wounds".......jesh......overthinking, over tricked out Ofsir types!

I got a few Stanleys for just such an occasion so that part is covered. We can keep the predators off with the pea shooters while Nate does the cookin. Sounds like a great plan.

Oh, nice gun too.

I've run something similar in a run and gun before and it really is easy and give you best of both worlds.  Little chicken wing to rotate in close quarters and you are making hits up close through the dot.

Sideways, you'll be pleased to know I purchased the Pride Fowler Rapid Reticle 7.62 revolution scope.

I called out there and talked to Rich, who is our newest member as of this afternoon. He is one of the guys who actually developed this particular scope's reticle.

This particular scope which he sells to LEO's and Military guys at a very deep discount is a civilian version of the shorter military tactical scope.

This scope is optimized for a 7.62 shooting the 168 or 175 gr. boat tail rounds and provides both ranging capabilities and holdovers as well as left and right wind correction for 10mph and less of a cross wind. It is optimized for a 20" barrel.

The military version which retails for over two grand is optimized for a military 16" barrel. Either scope works exactly the same from 0 to 600 meters. After that the civie scope I am using will start to deviate with holdover so that to shoot a 900 meter target, I would use the 1000 yard aiming point and intemperate from 600 to 900. OK, I can learn to do that...that is if I ever made a shot that long. But this is Kentucky so a 250 yard shot is about normal with occasional 400 to 500 meter shots.

So' here's my plan. I'll mount this on the Sig and work with it, get to know it. Some day, I'll purchase the military scope and hang this evolution scope on the NM M1A. That 22" barrel on that gun would better match the reticle calibration in this scope.

With cost being a factor, I think this is the smart move here.

Well, I'll get it in the ballpark, then let a couple pros like you and Keith, (our Marine) put it through its paces. The final solution will be the spendy PF scope on the Sig and this scope on the Springfield.

Don, I think you will like it. There is a bit of a learning curve to the hold overs and ranging.

I don't think there is a faster way to engage targets at different ranges.

After talking to Rich on the ranging then shoot, how simple could it get

For those who don't know

This specialized PF reticle has 100 meter holdover lines. on each line is a bracket that is 9" at that range...the approximate size of a human head. So you look at your target and move the gun until the head fits one of the brackets.
Well that is the range
You are already on the correct holdover
No wind, snap the trigger
if you have a crosswind (Always) and its from the right we'll say and you're guessing its 5MPH then simply slide right 1/2 the distance of the right wind line
Each wind line is exactly calibrated for a 10mph wind.
You see with this reticle, while you are ranging, you are also aiming. once you get the range just adjust for wind and make the shot

Amazingly simple

And this reticle was designed for my SOCOM buds and is in their hands (I would guess)

I have a feeling that Keith will work it over before I travel down yonder.

I had a question, but I'll just PM the owner.

Don, not sure you're going to like it.
I'll take it off your hands for you. lol..

Should be the cats meow for ya, I'd say.

Also, you don't need the elevation and windage marks, you live in the land of 'Kentucky Windage'  :)

Very nice Don, bot the pop gun and the scope.

I was going to suggest the Vortex PST like I got, but that is a great looking scope.

You know, I have an entire pad of Ben Bun Laden targets. Does that mean I'm profiling?  8)
