Back in the market for a clip on NV.
« on: November 14, 2016, 03:10:00 PM »
I thought there was another thread on this but couldn't find anything. I also can't have a real NV scope here in good ol Ca (another reason the leave).

Looking at a NV clip on like a PVS. I got a bushnell 4.5x40 (digital) that has a mount but it is a little big/heavy and really doesn't focus. It works OK, but not up to what I want. Going to send it back. I guess a 1x24 or similar would have been better, but most have no way to be mounted.

Looking at the Nait nvps 20 or similar. Real thermal would be nice but way out of the price range.

Ca regulates NV scopes??  WOW.

Good thing its working. No crime in Ca.

I have the ITT Pinnacle GenIII PVS 14 and really like it.
Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel.

Think I will dig a hole,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Well, moving is out until the kids are out of school or I hit the lottery.

Here is a 2+ that looks OK. Still a little pricey, but its not 3k.

https://www.nightvision4less.com/night-optics-d-300m-2s-gen-2-night-vision-monocular.aspx

Then there is the Nait that is on Ebay for a little under a K. I think it is an older russian unit.

Not bad. My only question is why is the guy in the photos holding it up and looking through it in broad daylight?

Moving would be like hitting the lotto. Housing at 50% of your current costs and no state income tax.  Like getting a raise and cutting your expenses at the same time.

About the best gen 2+ I have found is about $1400, besides the russian looking one for 950. These are both new.

Has anyone built their own before? Lots of info on that and it does not look hard. Biggest trick is keeping it clean, nitro purge and getting a good tube.

Kits run around $700, less the tube. Tubes can be up to a grand, but many are in the 3-400 area even for a gen 3. Thinking a nice gen 2 tube will get me in for around a grand, then I could always upgrade later.

Thoughts??

Well, I pulled the plug and got an Armasight PVS-14 Gen2+ SD. Was doing a search and it came up for under $500, NIB plus $5 for shipping this friday only. I am a little sceptical, but with Amazons return policy, shipped from Ca I figured I had little to loose.

Was I lucky or is this black friday!

Got a confirmation email so we will see.

It shows a little less resolution than the spark (60-71 vs 45-51). But it is smaller and has a better 40* fov vs 30* for the spark.

Big thing should be the distortion in the tube. Spark shows obvious edge distortion.

Right down I-5, over Tehachapi to 40, and on to Bullhead City. Spend the night in Corning  or a bit farther South.

So I see my price of 1k is not going to get what I want. Even bumping it up to around 1500 does little, unless I build my own.

So I am at the road of getting the spark. Looks like a good unit. Doesn't have the accs like the 14 does, but it is just $500.

I can build my own, almost looks too easy. Kit minus tube is $700, tube can be well up to 1k or more. But options and upgrades are almost unlimited. I could even get a cheap tube and keep it under 1k.

I say put that money aside and throw some in the pot as you can and just save up and get a good one from TNVC or another reputable company. Will you have instant gratification? No but you'll have a better all around experience with NVGs.

JR. have you looked at these? $600 bucks seem to have really good reviews for this pricepoint.

That thing is crazy!

OK, I've only logged like 2500 hours wearing NVG's so I'm just a beginner... ;-)

But what the heck. Altimeter, gyro, windspeed, day and NVG

If you know how a NVD works, you know that you can't just "see through" it. The front lens focuses the image onto a phosphor screen. The millions sparkles from the light striking the phosphor is filmed by a camera, which displays the pic onto a mini eyepiece screen...That's how the Night Vision works. So how in the heck do you use that during the day?

Now I can say that one could switch on NVG's during full daylight. But to do so, you have to place a cap or cover onto the light gathering end. That cap will have a 1/16" hole in it and that is what you see. The Armee would train guys during the day with the caps on before pulling them off at night and crashing the bird for real

Because it is digital Don. Digital cameras work really well in UV light so the migration NV Scope has been going on for sometime now.

The Core above does not have auto shutoff for light as most NV does. I still think I may have to build one. Its like building one piston for an engine. Good parts, good NV.

Now onto FLIR, this is cool for about 1/10th the price of stand alone. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EXAQLVY?psc=1  Could be very handy around the farm.

I have upped my budget a little, but still looking at other options.

Looking at the Armasight co-mini that is very similar to the pvs-14.

Then there is the PVS-17a and the Nait VS-20.

Are you guys familiar with these at all. I have been doing lots of reading, learning alot.

Don, you just need a good night sight. Heck with all the info provided and you not being restricted for use you have many options!

I was thinking about the Armasight Co-mini and the PVS 14, and narrowed it to the PVS 14 for its wide use and options. Plus it is 4 oz lighter. Would like white phosphor but out of the budget.

Well, found another on amazon for $1150, Armasight pvs14, gen3 with just $5 shipping. They have pulled the $$ this time so we will see.

I really like FLIR, but way out of the budget.

Well, they did it again. Canceled the order, "tech issue" again. I looked up the seller and it was from Lithuania, but using a US storefront. So amazon took care of me.

So off to a real seller. I can get a 2+ for 2k with warranty so out comes the CC.

So after doubling the budget I was still not really finding what I wanted. I looked others that were close, but didn't have the options or followings. (lots of reading)

So I bit the bullet going a little over the budget and got a gen2+ using white phosphor (black and white vs green). Still discounted but new with a warranty. Should have it next week.

Now IR would have been real nice, but that is double the budget again.

JR, nice thing about the PVS14 is it is designed to be used stand-alone, with the capability of mounting to a weapon. It's much better than the PV7. I've used it quite a bit mounted on my helmet. The monacle allows for at least half of you peripheral vision, and you can adjust the gain so that it doesn't give you headaches. I've only mounted on my M4 once, but loved it as a NVD. There are also a bunch of gadgets you can add onto it, my favorite being a compass. It's nice being able to see your azimuth without having to look down at your compass.

Thx. That is why I went this route. The more I read and understood the more I kept leaning to it. Same as the white phosphor vs standard green. The green might be better for saving your night vision but the view being black/white was so much better!

Already found the compass, cool add on. What case do you like for it? I already have the J mount and it comes with the scull crusher. Looking at a helmet mount now since they have come down so much is price.

Finally got noticed it shipped today and they offered 10% off today. So a quick call saved me over $200 today.

I am going to try one of these, USA made and I have not read anything bad yet.  The App is pretty impressive on what can be selected!

I saw that and think for $500 it is a great idea.

Doesn't really have the versatility of the PVS but for a weapon sight it looks great.

Once I get it I will report back, but right now I don't have time to do much of anything!

OpticsPlanet had the pieces for $433 shipped (no kits-last one-free shipping-no tax), couldn't help myself. Get a cheap throw away phone and leave it setup. Heck, cheaper than my Vortex scope!

Speaking of cell phones I just got a new one (LG K10). Just a little smaller than my Note (5+ years old). Transferring the data was crazy, had to go through 5 aps until I found one that worked with the OLD Note. I was happy as I got all my contacts and pics (1800 pics) and now backed up on the new PC at home (that has carbonite) and I backup to the HD myself sometimes.

I always used the soft case that was issued with it. You might check Midway. I seem to recall seeing some surplus PVS14 cases on there for pretty cheap. If you don't like that one, you can always continue to shop until you find something that works for you.
