They don't make them like they use to
« on: January 21, 2018, 02:30:38 PM »
Growing up my grandfather had a several diffrent guns but the one I loved was his Winchester 1886 which my cousin got after he passed and sold for drug money some years later  Well when Winchester said they would make a reproduction of it I went to my LGS and placed one on order. Winchester was some what off on when they would be produced, I waited 2 1/2 years but it did come in. I don't like waiting! Took it out and shot 20 round of 45 70 now my right shoulder is black, blue and red but was total worth the wait. I guess that steel butt plate and 45 70 round was made for someone with no feeling in their shoulder or back in the day those guys shoulders could take a bunch more pounding

That’s a nice looking rifle, I like the wood & the discoloring of the action

Do you know if that will handle the hot bear loads? After viewing the picture of your shoulder it got me thinking about the bear loads I bought but never shot for our trip up north last summer.

Thanks, the wood and case harded reciver is why I always loved and wanted that rifle. I credit my grandfather with my love of hunting, fishing and outdoors. Not sure what a hot bear load is but that is from 49 grains of powder with a 350 grain hollow point sitting on top.

Real men grow hair on their chest! LOL I still have full range of motion of my arm. What gets me is I also have a Henery Golden big boy in 45 70 and shooting it didn't cause any kind of mark. Not sure if it is the brass vs harden reciever or that the barrel is 2 inches longer on the winchester or both that caused it to kick more.

Never shot a 460wby but I would say that the 45 70 isn't a round you go shot several 100 rounds in a weekend.

It looks like your gun is listed

Those are some impressive looking numbers for that big of a round. At the range the 1st few rounds I shot everyone kind of stopped and looked

My grandfather's rifle had a ladder sight on the tang but Winchester put a safety back there so I can't put one on there.

Think Quigley shot a little longer round, a 45-110. Remember that powder was not what is today.

He commented in the movie referring to the 45-70, "this one shoots a tad further"

That is a very good looking rig, sorry it wounds on the wrong end. The style /shape of the stock could be causing part of the bruising, along with the metal butt plate. I have a couple of Ruger falling block rifles in 45/70 and a T/C Contender hand gun with 14" barrel also in 45/70. One of the Rugers is a stainless with laminated wood for hunting the wet side of Washington. I started with the handgun but it is a bit of a challenge to hold on target.

Yes the Contender and Encore systems from T/C are very fun. I started with the Contender and a .41 mag barrel, bought a .410 shot/.45 colt for the travel trailer and the list kept growing. Then bought an Encore frame with a 7mm/08 handgun barrel. They are all fun to shoot and with the rifle stock and longer tubes can be good for hunting. Only bad thing with them is barrels keep following me home.

Once upon a time I had a contender pistol in 30-06, I really am not a fan of hand cannons.

I do however currently have a G2 with 45-70 & .50 cal muzzleloader, custom stock etc and I really like it for hunting.

A heavy gun will not kick as hard. I have an original Mac 10 in 45acp (closed bolt) and it hardly kicks at all being it goes at around 8lbs.

Maybe just slide a nice gell pad on that 45-70 when you shoot.
