Yea...Raptor

But if the truth be known...I spray so much of the stuff because of my ugly welds!

Good looking bumper there

It would cause me to want to accidentially back up into some kiA somewhere...

Looks good black, don't color match the thing...

You got too much of that goin' on in that suburban brain of yours!

Chrome don't get you home and color matched bumpers, are for rio grande jumpers!
Waxing poetic

I like it.

I decided to put some red shackles on it to tie it together.

Well, you had to have SOME red,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Yep Don, amazing what a good coating over something not as good makes the whole thing better. And your welds aren't that bad  ::)

Ok. Got the truck back after 2 1/2 weeks. Bumper turned out good but my over engineered on board air system is giving me some problems. Pressure switch seems stuck on so I plan on swapping the 150 psi for the 175 psi switch to see if that solves the problem. Then I have to chase down a significant air leak.

So after a hiatus, more happening finally.

Got the 8 1/2 ton crosby shackles on after ordering carbide bits to open up the hole in the bumper.  I'll find a pic somewhere.

Now ordered Eagle Alloy wheels in 059 style and Nitto Exo Grappler in 275/60/20.

They are in at the local discount tire store but I am waiting on lug nuts.

In the mean time I am also about to order some custom made spiked lugs.  The machine shop, Cutworm Specialties has them in steel and 7075 aluminum.  Claims the aluminum is stronger.

I doubtful and wanted some rocket scientist opinion like Wilsonphil or Shawn or someone with metallurgy experience.

What say ye?  And even if they are, is dissimilar metal corrosion and galling worth the risk?

Well depending on the alloy yes 7075 can be stronger than some steel alloys, but are you sure they are making lug nuts out of 7075?

That's what he claims and I have no reason to doubt him.

http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=122046748570&alt=web

I did some google fu and I'm still not sure that the strength is equal to grade 5 steel, though much closer than 6061.  I also have concerns over galvanic corrosion which won't be an issue on steel.

7075 alloy is tough, it has memory built into the material. Unlike steel which you bend & its stays bent for the most part. 7075 you can bend it to a certain degree & it will flex back to its original shape. Why do you think the off road racing guys run 7075 links? It's not because it's a cheap & readily available material.

I am going to admit something here that I never did in the years running GLO. We actually had a diff cover we had to replace. The cover still hangs on the wall at Branik Motorsports to this day I believe. Only cover I ever had to warranty. Stan Haynes the owner was running xrra circuit. Hit a boulder the size of his buggy head on at around 50mph square on a front 60 cover. Non of the welds broke on the cover but it did bend it slightly which warped the 1/2" bolt flange. Cover then leaked and we couldn't get it to seal. Since he was sponsored by us at the time we just gave him a new one. He was running his 7075 links, non of them were bent after the hit. We know that they absorbed a lot of the impact though & then returned to original.

7075 is my favorite material for most things!  followed by 17-4 and then a whole bunch of others.  I just don't see the advantage long term with lug nuts.

my uneducated thoughts as well Phil.  I ordered the steel ones to be safe.  And ordered a starter powder coating kit from Eastwood.  I want to try my hand at some powder coating and I will start with these lugs.

Now I just need to hit CL and find a cheap used oven...

So at breakfast this morning, I found a connection through a friend that already has powder coating equipment in his garage.  We're going to try to coat them today so I may be able to get the wheels on this week.

True story, have an elderly friend from Harlan, KY. He told a story as a kid during the coal mining wars of bending a nail up & dropping them thru the rusted floor boards of their pickups as they drove  in front of the coal trucks to take out the tires on trailing truck.

Supposedly a standard deep socket will work.  We shall see.
