Traeger
« on: July 16, 2016, 06:12:38 PM »
So I finished our deck a week or so ago. Still need to complete landscaping around it but that will be towards fall when I undertake that process. As I built & designed the deck area I wanted a place for our current grill & a new addition. We were originally thinking a black stone cooktop like Nate has but then just purchased a cast Webber plate for our current grill to do bacon etc. so now I'm looking at all options & keep coming back to the Traeger line of products. Also looked at this green eggs (not really interested) & other wood smokers. Anyone using a Traeger?

I am using Traeger, was literally just talking to Nate about this. The new ones aren't built nearly as well. Thinner steel, etc. Mine is 8 years old, and still performs flawlessly.

Look for a used Traeger Big Tex. That's what I'd do if you wanted Traeger. I have the lil Tex and would trade up if presented the opportunity. I'm always watching craigslist/offer up for one. My $.02.

There are lots of other pellet cookers out there too, fwiw

I also heard (not sure if it's true) there are big differences on the Traeger from one store to next. Say a Costco versus a local mom & pop type store who sells them. But with that stated I did hear the newer China stuff is junk.....

Yeah, well Traeger Co has been sold a couple times recently. The new stuff is all china man stuff. I believe mine was made in Oregon, it's one of the "good ones". I have heard the new Costco ones rusting out after a few years

so let me ask you this shawn,

you have a gas grill with a cast plate for it, what are you wanting to do with the new cooker............?

I bought a RecTec a month or so ago and I really like it. Stainless burner pot, diffuser plate and grease tray and stainless racks.
Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel.

Nate already knows this but essentially acquire another outdoor tool. I'm not attentive enough to just run a wood smoker. So was thinking an automated pellet style unit would be more my speed.

I second that. Mine has made me a hero everytime I've used it.  Only wish is that it was a heavier smoke. Gonna work on that with some modifications I've seen

You can just throw a cast iron dish with some smoldering chips in there, I've done that before

Hold up the buss.  You can't just finish a deck with out photos and a detailed write up about.  What deck stain? Wood choice? Covered?

Open (by 4pm daily whole back yard is shaded so didn't feel we needed covered) two level, cedar 1x6 planks & Sierra colored pennefin stain. Still need to build retaining wall & finish area with fire pit.

If I found a 3 yr old big tex for 3 bills by me it'd be in the bed of my truck. Hot rod is a piece of cake and they'll prob warranty it for free. I'm on #3 or 4

Well, here's the a scoop on the big Tex. Apparently I'm buying it at 4 pm Monday if it checks out, which I think it will. Guys going thru a dovorce & needs it gone. This is assuming his soon to be ex doesn't sell it off over the weekend or some goofy divorce thing happens between now & then..... ::)

If that's the case, that's prob the best deal I've ever seen on a traeger. Those cold smoker attachments make for nice warmers too!

He's not living where it's at, my guess it's at his old house. He said he will be there on Monday between 4-6 & I asked if I could show at 4 & he said that would be great.....

We'll see......
