Title: BBQ grill/smoker/cooker build
Post by: Farmer Jon on August 23, 2015, 10:54:32 AM
This all started one day I had some time to waste and seen a bass pro shop so I went in to browse around. I seen this.http://www.basspro.com/Horizon-Smoker-16-Ranger-Backyard-Smoker/product/10202040/. I loved it but who has nearly 2 grand to drop on a smoker? I was talking to a fried of mine showed him a picture and he set me up with some water heater tanks. Shortly after we got 3 inches of rain and couldent do anything at work and the rest is history. Its not done yet but getting there. I still need a fire box.   http://s1008.photobucket.com/user/jonandjen/media/1a1a1a1a.jpg.html One side is the smoker and cooker the other side is the charcoal bbq grill. The axel and trailer frame came from an old auger we had cut up for scrap iron.

That's nice!

But I'd find someone like Norm to fab up one from one of his old WW2 bomb casings

That would be one cool lookin' "smoker"

Still not getting much done. As soon as it dried up everything went to heck. Friday consisted in taking things apart and ordering parts on 3 different pieces of equipment. The links you gave me are really good. I could sit here all day surfing them.

Its scary what they want for these things. Should come with a cook for life for the $$$.

Nice work, lets see some meat in there.

So I blew the dust off this thing yesterday. Got the fire box done. Everything welded to the trailer. Racks in the cold smoker. I still need to fabricate some handles and latches. I also need to install a heat deflector under the cooking grate.

Almost ready for a test burn. I'm going to need to put a damper on. I'm not filling any holes until I do a burn.
Had myself a buddy and my number 2 son working on it.

He had a learning experience. He just turned 18 and is about to be out on his own. We had him all over the shop loking for a metal strecher. He was embarrassed and called us a bunch of dicks but was man enough to take a little teasing.  (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170115/4d902213809914082647635405f0b6cc.jpg)

Instead of useing one piece of angle to attach it to the trailer I used 2. More surface area to get a bead on.

This is a floor out of an old hog building. Going in the bottom of the fire box and in the bottom of the BBQ grill side.

I have rods holding the grates so they are removable. If I want to hang stuff in here like to do sausage.

Pretty ugly welds but if they hold they are good. I do believe they will hold.

Handles and latches welded on. Got the basket built. It is ready for a test fire. I painted all the new steel so it won't rust sitting outside. After I got the bugs worked out it will get a new paint job and fenders/ table added on both sides. I'd like to find some stainless steel for that. I got a test burn done and found I needed a heat shield. It was really hot in the front but almost cold in the back. I made one and bolted it in. Then I plugged up some of the holes. I replaced the old bearing and races in the hubs so she should be ready to roll now. I have a friend that is insisting we put some hams on there first. Not sure when we will do it but there will be pictures. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170816/31c65b38d5d444f84f5233b5307cacfb.jpg)

Very nice work. Can't wait to see it in action. I'll tell you how Klose makes his pits. There are two rails along the sides and they install plates across them to act as diffuser plates. The plates get smaller and the spaces between get bigger as you move away from the box. They lay them in and get a fire burning. Then they space them to get even heat then tack them down.

Thats one reason why I bolted it in. In case it don't work right. I was thinking I might have to put some holes in it. Labor day weekend is coming up. It will for sure be in operation then.

Started out with a couple hams. They turned out great. I threw on some hard boiled eggs and fish. They didn't turn out so well. Turned into rubber. Good flavor but hardly edible. I never did eggs and or fish before.
It was a good test and tune. The BBQ side worked perfectly.

I need to add a couple things. Drain hole in the smoker part for drippings. I need a stirring rod for the fire box. Stirring rod holder and beverage holder.

I did find one unintended use for it. I was able to get both kids bikes on it to get them home from the camp ground. One little bike in the basket and the the other fit perfectly between the tanks!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170904/64cdcdc4625cef51965fb893c741ebe7.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170904/e0aa246786386c41cdf41a86258affdf.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170904/91c6c933fcdeac5fb54316521212d70f.jpg)
