« on: December 06, 2019, 06:03:53 PM »
An acquaintance has a collection larger than he needs, and sounds like he needs money for something else.  He built this up, claims to have spent $2700.  He figures it's probably worth $2000 but will let it go for $1200.  It's really pretty, so I am considering buying it.  Just wanted to confirm y'all think it's a fair deal.

Firearms / Quick price check Springfield Armory XD-45
« on: September 27, 2017, 09:32:44 AM »
My father in law is in the county sheriff's auxiliary and they are upgrading everyone's handgun.  He has been carrying a Springfield Armory XD-45 for many years and they are offering the option to purchase it.  I figured you guys are my best bet at a quick estimate of it's value.  It is in really good condition, original box, 3 mags, and night sights, no other modifications or anything.  Obviously it operates flawlessly.

Side note:  Photobucket appears to no longer allow uploads of "pictures like these".  So I may not be using that website anymore.  Let me know if the below dropbox links work ok.  Thanks!

Tires, Wheels, and Suspension / Tire repair
« on: October 10, 2016, 01:46:19 PM »
Over the weekend I went to visit my sister-in-law's new house that is in construction.  They found a nice piece of land and a great spot for a house but ended up with about 1/4 mile long gravel driveway.  We visited with them and toured the house for about an hour and left for home.  About 5 minutes after I got back on the highway my tire pressure alarm went off indicating an issue with the left rear tire.  My dash indicated it still had 50 psi, and since the truck was lightly loaded with the family and 300 lbs of cargo, I knew 50 PSI wouldn't be a big deal.  I drove a little further until I could find a safe spot to check it out.  What I found in the tire really surprised me.  Since the leak was slow, I finished my 20 minute drive home while watching the pressure.  It only dropped another 2 psi.  But by the time I parked in the garage I could start to hear the hissing.

It took a ton of effort to pry it out, but here is what I ended up with.  It's not even sharp.  I can't believe my bad luck.  I must have hit it just perfect to force a blunt object through a 10 ply tire.  It's made of cast iron or steel, not sure what it is for.

So I cleaned up the hole a little bit with the reaming tool that comes with the tire patch kit and plugged it.  I used a decent amount of the clear cement glue as well.  I let it sit overnight and filled it back up with air in the morning.  It has now been a day and a half.  I have driven about 30 miles on it and it hasn't lost any measurable amount of pressure.  But it still makes me really nervous to do this on a road vehicle.  I have successfully done this before on tractors, atv's and other off road things.  But never on something that operates over 20 PSI and never on something for the highway.  So I am way beyond my previous experience with this running 60 PSI and carrying heavy loads at high speed.  What are your thoughts?  Should I look at replacing the tire, or is that overkill?

Shops Garages and Barns / Garage Floor Coatings

Legacy Industrial
HD6525MMA
25% solids, clear gloss finish
Thoroughly cleaned and pressure washed floor then applied with standard 3/8" nap roller.
Garage is 930 square feet.  I used about 5.5 gallons and did three coats.  I could have stopped at 2 coats, but I only ever want to do this once and am hoping the extra coat will help it last longer.

First coat going on:

Tires, Wheels, and Suspension / Deere 2320 tire swap issue
« on: June 10, 2016, 05:55:51 PM »
Guys I need some opinions or ideas on how to get these wheels mounted.

A little background, I am sick of getting punctures in the 4 ply turf tires and I have basically no traction.  The tires were shot anyway.  So I found these wheels for cheap.  They are the same height, a little wider and a lot heavier duty.  So I want to mount them up.  I originally was thinking cut out the center of the rim and weld in a solid round plate.  Then drill holes where I need them.  Until I did a test fit.  I need about 2 inches more offset.  So now I am thinking I need someone to fabricate a spacer to go from 6x150mm on the hub to 6x8" on the rim.  Thoughts, suggestion or solutions?

Hand Tools, Power Tools, Welders, etc / Compressed Air Piping in Shop
« on: November 23, 2015, 01:10:31 PM »
Has anyone used this product before?  The piping and outlets are available as stand alone parts or as a preconfigured kit at northern tool.  I picked up one of their regulator / filters to try and it seems like a pretty solid part.  Appears to be a US company based in Wisconsin.  The company isn't afraid to declare their faith either.

Shops Garages and Barns / Small Barn Construction
« on: October 26, 2015, 02:15:26 PM »
I decided that I needed an out building, barn or shed of some sort to keep my tractor and implements out of the weather.  After researching the available options, I wasn't completely satisfied with the durability or cost and wanted to build it myself.  Luckily when I bought the property there were several older telephone poles left from when they replaced the line on our road.  So I got to work building the largest structure that I could with the size materials available and that I could reasonably accomplish on my own before winter.

Step 1 was to clear all the trees, brush and re-grade the area flat.  I don't have any before pictures.  But here is what it looked like when I started to layout where I was going to place the posts.

Hide Site / Advice on buying land
« on: August 24, 2015, 01:05:59 PM »
Well I find myself all of a sudden with an opportunity that does not appear often and need some of your thoughts on the topic.  My primary residence is 7 acres and is situated among several other 3 to 8 acre residential parcels.  Directly behind me (we share approx. 650 linear feet) there is a man that owns 80 to 100 acres.  As a result of a divorce, he is offering to sell a 10 acre section of land, half of which borders with my land.  My neighbor has offered to split the 10 acres with me because the other half of the land borders the back of his land.  So we would each end up buying 5 acres, my rectangle would basically turn into a square.  His new parcel has road access, mine is land locked except through my own property making it hard to resell in the future unless I re-divide it the other direction making two 6 acre parcels.

Price - he is asking a reasonable price for the land compared to everything else available nearby and compared to prices in recent history.  I think we can do a little better which would make it pretty competitive, but not the cheapest price land has sold for around us.

The trade off - we had been saving up to do a garage addition on our house in the next couple years.  If we purchase the land, the garage addition would likely be pushed significantly further into the future.

The alternative - about 10 years ago a company tried to rezone this property so they could build a sub division.  We are not very far from town, so this is happening all around us.  At that time, the residents tried to fight it.  Finally the current owner purchased all of it to avoid the sub division.  Now that it's available, I have to assume it could be purchased for the same reason again.  If that happens, my back yard view would become the backside of many homes.

Anyone else made decisions like this or any thoughts?

I know this has been covered a multitude of times on other sites, but since we don't have a write up yet I thought I would include some pictures.
