Title: Eclipse mania
Post by: Superwhdm on August 20, 2017, 10:18:16 PM
I dont understand all this hubbub about the solar eclipse tomorrow. I do understand that is hasn't happened in around 100 years and that's cool and all. But why millions of people are converging on cities across the country in the path of this occurrence is a beyond me. Listen Im not activist but the mobilization of this many people for one day for one reason could wipe out the occurrence of starving kids or veterans that need help. Millions of dollars will pour into these cities for hotels, stores and restaurants which will bring about a boom for the local economies, especially in lots of rural ones which is great, but... Just imagine this ONE occurrence in which people are willing to skip work to stare into the sun...all while renting a shipping container with a/c for $3500 a weekend.

I cant help but think how backwards masses can be.

If I didn't live in the path I would probably travel some with my kids to get in the zone. However I wouldent be going to a city. Id be out in the country somewhere and pull into a field road and enjoy it peace.
I remember one in the 70s when I was a kid. My mom made a viewer out of cardboard and aluminum foil. I will never forget it. I would want my kids to experience that same thing. They will be in school today. The school is providing glasses and the kids will be allowed to go watch it.

I hope I'm not wrong, but I was thinking of using my welding hood on shade #13 as per the NASA recommendation.

I plan to be pushing dirt on sarge during the darkest part today. My farm will be a 95% totality. I'll forever couple the experience of Riding Sarge around and my one in a lifetime zombie creatin' death ray sun bathing experience!

I was just talking to my employee about using helmets, although Az is only getting about 60% eclipse.

I remember the one Jon mentioned, from the 70's. Our teacher helped us make boxes, but she failed to prevent the mentally challenged kids in class from using the box as a pair of goggles (I now wear glasses because of that experience :( )

My wife ordered glasses 8 weeks ago so we had them.  I could see it from my office window and I had to leave for a meeting around maximum eclipse.  I was amazed as I looked out across the many parking garages to see hundreds of "workers" hanging out on the rooftop floor in a party like atmosphere.  Drove to my meeting and saw random crowds gathered all over the place to watch.

I suspect the lost economic input to business today would be in the billions.......

And for the most part, those are the same ones that want to protest about anything management wants to make changes to. All take and no give, it is the new American way.
