Title: Trans American Trail Adventure trip 2021
Post by: stlaser on February 27, 2021, 09:27:13 PM
Ok, tentatively thinking June 29th meetup at my shop in Dacono, CO. You all can camp there if you like? Gated facility with water, Rv dump, showers, kitchenette, WiFi and some electricity depending on who shows up. Depart morning of June 30th for a week. Starting North East WY up in Newcastle WY and hitting the trail for a week. No set pace, we’ll take it as it comes and see how far we can get.

Ideally we’d like at least 3 other trucks besides Don and I

Who’s in?

Possibility of a bike or two joining us trucks.....

OK, S, I'm in
I'll arrive either the 29th or the 30th or the 31st of June or the 32nd
Aviators can do that sort of thing
It's tricky
Takes crossin' the international dateline a couple times, with one bein' in reverse, inverted in a parallel universe
But it works I think!

So, I'm speaking for Shawn here, because I just split the topic to make it easier for
Quote
old cops
to find (Sorry JR ;-)

This is the 2021 Realman-GLO, or GLO/Realman Adventure cruise.

The honorable Shawn is the guy in charge of activities :police: (if things happen to go awry.) Of course I am in charge if everyone has a great time and it all goes well! :cheesy:

This is a reset from the trip last year that got cancelled due to some government cover-up of a Chinese germ warfare attack ,

S-Please publish your (correct) version of the itinerary you have in mind. :undecided:

From memory: :blank:

Day 1 meet and greet at Shawn's shop with overnight supported camping at that site. It is a gated business park with water, showers, some power and some other things. :azn:

We depart the next day toward Douglas Wyoming where we enter the Trans-American Trail system. If it works out I may have a place of interest to visit there, TBD...

Thereafter for 7-8 days we will drive along the trail departing only to refuel or purchase more steak, wine, and shrimp. :beercheers:

I am not sure where we end up this adventure but who really cares? :likebutton:

There will be campfires burned, quoffee drank, lies told, good food eaten, not many showers and an armee story or two that begins with, "And there I was..."

There may even be some bible talk, that is if Shawn can get his sermon on kindness, sensitivity, and loving one's neighbor all put together!!!!!!!

Ya, forget that, what was I thinkin?

From what Shawn tells me the trail will be beautiful and quite long but not all that challenging. :likebutton: This is all about fellowship, building memories, and having fun with some of America's most majestic vistas as a backdrop.

We should have T-shirts for the group by then.

We will likely have a mix of 4X4's...some capable like Shawn's jeep and some that can barely make it like my Burb, and possibly some adventure bikes as well. People who do not have a vehicle could possibly ride along and sleeping space may not be a problem. I will have my small off road camper, and a 3-man roof top tent. It also has a walled annex below the tent that could hold a couple more.

Anyway that is what I know for now. Not sure if we are headed east, north, south, up or down, and I don't really care. Ever spit on your hand, then slap it together,  :facepalm:and use that to determine which direction you were heading? This is sort of like that.

Please make it known here who is interested in joining this fun and adventurous group.

Inclusive dates: 29 June -7 or 8 July.

Cost per person is $1,000 or $10,000, or free.
You pick which entry fee that best meets your expectations! :likebutton:

We meet n' start here:

Dave, I do and it was a whopping $8 to get all the way points for WY trail complete. Sam makes his living running this trans America trail site. I believe from what I can see he’s put a lot of time and effort into it. With that said it’s not something I want to publish online and undermine his hard work. You can also get hard copy maps too via his site.

I’ll add I think Don summed it up pretty well. The trail starts north of Douglas, WY then heads SW towards Laramie and then back NW towards Yellowstone National Park. We’re assuming full size trucks that are 4x4 capable can make the trip. In the event it gets too crazy, we’ll detour and by pass the more extreme sections. I have quite a bit of recovery gear and onboard air available. We have no set itinerary and I think leaving it open ended is best. I’d love for these to be an annual trip and run different trails every year.

As far as sleeping I think I’m buying an enclosed hammock and I’ll tie it up to Dons truck at one end and mine at the other. Expenses should be limited to fuel and food, maybe we find a campground to take a shower at some point?

I will already be home from vacation by then. I also seriously doubt that my truck would handle the trails you are talking about.

This is very tempting. I was originally planned to take my daughter on a trip to the Yukon this year as her graduation get out of the house celebration. This could be a substitute, if I can get the blazer ready, or a different vehicle prepped in time

It’s tempting to toss a bike in on the trip but seeming the trip is point A to point B.  The off-road trip would require a ride back to my other vehicle.

I also fall into the list of don’t plan on takin a duramax on a off-road trip.

Might have a place in Douglas you could park your truck if need be.

Shawn, Are we allowed to bring guns? May make for a fun wilderness shoot.

But last thing I want is to upset a hippy. Heck I may get canceled or something...

I’m fine with it, check local laws as I’m not responsible.

Assuming Ken isn’t coming (even though I think he should bring his sq Cummins truck which still most likely needs a front axle upgrade) so we don’t have to cover that hammers aka 1911’s are not allowed......

Worth noting we will not be on private property. It is all state or federal ground.

Charles hit me up this morning asking if the bus could do the trails? His truck is long but on 6” lift and 35’s also has that rear grizzly locker. I’m just now starting to dive in depth into gps way points.

Worth noting there are three mountains areas. The most extensive looks to be last leg which we may of may not make it to. The other two look to be canyons I believe from quick glance. Majority of this trip is more open space I believe. It’s wy not Colorado’s crazy crawler trails is my initial thought. Realize Don is driving his burb with a camper, if he can make it most of you can I believe with a slightly modded truck. Again, I’ve never run this system but that is my initial take.

Gas / Food / Motel available every 100 miles or so. Trying to figure out camping, may be a pop along trail for night type of thing.

I’m going to contact wy, here in Colorado you need a sticker (tax stamp) for many trail systems.

No 1911's
My youngest pre-Ranger is goin' to have an issue with that.

It's the only pistol he has. When you see him down at the farm, that gun is always on his hip.

He tells me that when my glock is used to literally save the entire world in a great war, he will switch to it. Until then, he's wearin' his 1911.
He's an old soul. At 16 he listens to Frank Sinatra while working on his Chevy truck, and hunts (Only) with a 30-06.

Don, I like your son. Shawn should aspire to be more like him. Chevys and 1911s. He will be a great leader some day.

Thanks Ken!
He better be. Leading men in the Army is no small asking. Those men are important. I have taught him for years to sacrifice for them. They eat first, you last. They sleep, you stay up. you take the arse chewing, not them and so forth. He does all that. I watch him on the football team. Was captain of the varsity defense as a 10th grader. Coach told me in private once that that boy was one of the top leaders he had ever seen on the field in 23 years of coaching. He got home from school today and turned around and went off to lift at a gym he and his brother joined all by themselves. This one is run by an ex frog-man and recon marine.
Ya, I'm a proud dad and boasting on him a bit but I guess I'm partial to all my boys.
Oh and he is going to marry one of Shawn's daughters some day. Just don't know which one yet. Maybe after this trip we will have a better idea.
You coming on this thing???
Pretty please??

Ya, no one like that is allowed. I will be checking everyone before they leave with this group.
They will need to:
1. Have a brain (like one is actually present)
2. Be a member of any political party as long as its republican or libertarian.
3. Love Trump
4. Be able to name several V8 engines and talk about them briefly.
5. When asked what their favorite truck is, they must answer Chevy, Ford, Mopar.
Anyone dropped off or met by anyone driving a Volvo, BMW, anything electric, or having fewer than 4 cylinders will not be travelling with us.
Anyone with fewer than 1000 rounds of practice ammo will also be sent packing.
You must be a:
Meat eater
Have no clue what quiche is.
Be able to name the big wars where the US kicked communists arse

Well, I could go on but you all get the picture.
No winners, no gays, No one who has to face any particular direction when praying or any people who believe any color skin is any better than any other one, and no one who doesn't mind getting and staying dirty.
Oh and anyone who is a fascist who calls others fascist. They will not be welcome either.

Street legal kit with a plate makes that easy, but I’m thinking it’s probably much of the similar option as a bike.  To many miles for a one way direction.

That would be interesting

Turbo Cam-Am

Like 180 HP

I'll bring the large med kit...Includes an inflatable helicopter to get you to the trauma center if needed.

But never the less, something like that would be cool, but you would have to have some support...someone willing to meet you with a trailer to get you home. Could be done.

Duane was telling me not too long ago, that there are more SxS's on the road and running around in town, than trucks/cars

In Utah you can take them anywhere but the highway as long as you have a street kit, horn, turn signals and so forth, see them in the drive ups and the gas stations and parking lots

Pretty sure Shawn I’m not strokin that check just yet.

Dave, you have no excuse unless you get a job by then. Even you truck could do it with those wide shiny wheels

Who is going to see if the boy is 16 or not? Just don't carry in town or around "other" campers. You do have the right to protect yourself in national parks.

Ammo, no problem, long as there's water it can be dumped on someone for a shower.

Heck, a meet near SLC and head out.

Now I need to check my schedule as I think that is the week of scout camp, if it goes. Great alternative though!!

Get it done JR! I have a local older retired guy who will most likely be joining us for the first half of the trip and dropping out somewhere around Laramie as he has to be in Cali for a grand sons B-day. Good guy, drives a JKU and has tear drop off road trailer. I put him on to this link.

OK, so let's do a tally of who is/maybe coming

Shawn + possibly 1 or 2 girlies
Big D mit Frau and 1 pre-ranger
JR + 1 AWOL Scout (or 2??)  Possible
Little Don (related to Big Don)
Air Force Dave    Possible
Salt Lake Dave   Possible
Tex      Talkin' bout it...  Possible
America Mike  Possible??
Shawn's Hippy friend  Possible

Who else? Who have I missed?

And lets start to move from the possible to:
1. Sure, I'm in
or
2. Well, my wife won't let me, and I'm kinda scared...

Cause

Me and the tough Denver based guy want a head count and I'll soon need a confirmed numba of folks for the T-shirt purchase.

I'll come up with the design and post it up for your disapproval, which I will toss like all of you'lls advice and print it anyway

So about the T, here's my thoughts

Across the front the Real Man compass thing, see attachment
And the words emblazoned somewhere: RealMan Adventure Cruise 2021

On the back we'll print up any sponsors like GLO or is it GLEO??, RMTWS, and anyone else wanting to get their organization on there who is helping

And I'll pray on it and put some appropriate scripture on it. Maybe we can get Matt to join and he can supply the scripture recommendation.

I will likely just bring the T's to Shawn's shop and hand them out there

So let's tighten up the shot group just a little more

What does this trail rate for 4x4? Like on a 1-5 so maybe someone on the fence can decide.

My understanding even a mildly moded 4x can do the rubicon now as they have put "bypasses" on the real hard parts.

JR, idk as non of us have run it. Like I said before if it gets too tough we’ll bypass a section. We’re winging it.......

I am hoping we get a couple bike guys who would be willing to scout for us possibly? That might be helpful.

Oh and who let the rift raft aka Ken in here? I mean don’t you have some lights to hang up or a roof structure to build?

I’m sure we can make that work out, jk has a hitch into the bumper. Would prefer if someone had space for rack in a truck bed I’m not having it mounted in my jk hitch whole trip though.

One other thing worth mentioning. I don’t have outside storage at the shop. We do have side street parking and the area is relatively safe (no crack heads etc). However, the zoning does not allow for parking outside in the gated units for days on end.

I'm sure there will be a seat or 2, its the gear and stuff for the bike that might be an issue.

Dave, you have nice lifted truck, nice tires. Don't tell me the nice rims might get scratched? I don't want to scratch my black rims.

The truck has a few issues for sure.  I definitely don’t care about the wheels and appearance.... I have some axle issues that have yet to be addressed.  I also don’t like the idea of wheeling a full-size diesel seem like the ideal option either

Dave is the youngster bike guy.

I would have to take the backhoe off and tow it, trailer queen you know.

Is Ken bringing H? Why do we need a tractor? If so would definitely need backhoe attachment, my 2 cents! Not opposed, just trying to stay ahead of you guys is all.......  :beercheers:

Just to offer a counter point, I did just that last weekend. Was way off into the Daniel Boone national forest in the D-Max. Was a hoot, and with that grizzly locker from El Tate, it did great. Never stuck once. I may have scraped up alongside a hard something, regrettably, as the streaks on the fender turned out to be gouges in the paint.
Oh well, life goes on, gouges or no...

Scrapes, scratches, gouges and dents all create character. If you’re worried about it you had better keep it in your garage next to your purse......

Concur

I'd have to say that truck of mine is quite the character at this point

Who knows you may see it. The suburban is primary, but the truck is backup

Next is the 14bolt install and gear swap on the front diff. Get that in there and do some more HP tuning to optimize that combo. I plan to start pulling the camper around in about a month. That will be the telling part. If that goes OK, then the big burb will show. If not, then the Silverado will do the lugging duties. Heck it wouldn't even know a load that small is back there!

Purse and all can stay on roads. I’m ok with it,  besides drive my truck... something break.... the torment from the group then be left in a pile of broken parts as Shawn’s jeep couldn’t pull my duramax along, dons burb would run out of fuel, Ken will be busy pulling H along and JR won’t be out of the city busy buying tractor equipment.

Hey, I will beat your with my purse. Scratches are fine but I avoid narrow wall rock trails, still leaves a lot of 4 wheeling out there. Sure parts break, I have cut trees to make corners.

I reached out to Sam today about our trip. I inquired about running the trail with full size trucks and towing tear drop style off road campers. In addition I asked about camping locations along the trail. In the meantime please read this if you’re wondering about your trucks capabilities.

Dave, feel free to do your own due diligence if you have specific questions you need answered about this trail. I just stated I had sent him a message asking about taking full size vehicles on this trail. Here is his contact link below so you can contact him if you wish.

https://www.transamtrail.com/contact/

The link I gave was so you could read this specifically below.

“The TAT is NOT a single track ride with tight sections. It uses public roads and back country roads, both non-pavement and pavement. It does NOT cross any private land or locked gates.”

To me that statement implied as if the trail is easy. Note you may need to take your spinning chrome wheel centers off before making the trip. Likewise, Ken should probably not load his truck bed with H’s fat carcass. Beyond that I don’t know until he responds, when I know it will be posted on this thread.

Per Sam, not a lot of detail but I don’t believe there are any concerns past rain which at the end of June should not be an issue either. I never stated exactly when we were traveling.

“Shawn...Thanks for the email.  You guys should not have any trouble.  The weather (rain) will be your concern.“

Currently driving back from Bozeman MT as you can see per my gps. It dawned upon me we are driving up I25 on June 30th and the trail intersects it near Douglas WY. Should we drive all the way North and start it at legit beginning or jump on it here at Douglas. If we start here it might allow us to get farther and closer to Yellowstone over the course of the week. For those who are committed to going what say you? It’s about 3.5hr from shop to Douglas, WY

Edit: btw that’s my wife’s lead foot

I'd say the trek would be better if we are going into mountains. Driving around the plains is so-so, but approaching the yeller-stones with it's trees and lava pits will give us a good place to hang out amongst some great scenery

I tend to agree with this sentiment. It also gets us on trail sooner which is kind of the point. I’m sure we’ll have plenty of boring wy regardless.

Boring is why we have "walkie-talkie's"
Ya know, three or four people asking Shawn like every fifteen minutes, "Are we there yet?"
Then you have the "dusties"...The guy who purposely dusts out the guy behind him, "just cause."
And my fav: A dustie armed with several water balloons...

So who do we for sure have going, Me N' Shawn, N...??

Yes so far we’re the two confirmed. I have 2-3 guys who are up in the air atm. Including one guy from Douglas, WY

America Mike is planning to go he just didn’t want to say so then have to back out and look like a jerk. Told him it was ok and I’d vouch this wasn’t a one off occasion.

Charles is a possibility and so is JR

Utah Dave but we need to keep him away from ledges as he has a fear of them

Local Jeep guy here to me named Timothy Floyd (he would have to duck out mid week to head to Cali though)

Is it Dave from KY too? Somebody near you Don?

I’d love to be able to, but I have youth activities bracketing the dates for this trip. If my daughter who will probably leaving home at the end of the year wasn’t intent on going to these activities we’d be out there with you.
But to look in the plus side, it gives me an extra year to get the Blazer fully ready for fun.

Mike, you're still National Guard, right??
Go see your S2 shop and order some 1:50,000 and maybe something even smaller. They can get them for just about every spot on earth. Aside from that you could purchase and download the data from Lorain and a few others then just chop and paste to get a detailed map of the trail +, say 10-20 miles each side. Could cut and paste then print the strip, while loading the data onto a thumb drive to download onto a laptop (Like mine!)

CB and those handheld radio things...
We'll come up with a commo plan and share it at Shawn't place during the meet up
Oh, and since the meet and greet is at a more or less civilized place, we should plan to have a cookout of sorts, then sit around and stare at some fire before sleepy time.

And

I have a guy to print up T-shirts set up...kinda.

For the design, I am planning to have that small nautical compass rose over a breast pocket, then that same big blown up compass all over the back. On the left breast will be something like "Real Man 2021 Summer Cruise", then the compass, then below that a scripture. Thinking the Proverbs 27:17  Iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens another. Not sure if I mentioned prior or not, gated facility where you uns can camp for night. It’s pretty quiet aside from neighbors donkeys on occasion. RV dump and fresh water supply, some limited electric hookups, showers and WiFi / kitchenette with pool table and tv.

Comms, cb and I have a couple baofeng hand held radios if someone smarter than I can coordinate using them.

Shawn,

Was talking to Little Don (Not so little) yesterday. He is looking to meet up on the trailhead somewhere. He will be on his Moto, 790 KTM I think. Anyway, I know it's a tall order, but any chance we could see your best guess for where we may end the ride each day, all things being equal to your estimate of conditions and barring any invasion of foreigners.

Oh, wait a minute, that is already happening, so barring another great flood or Yellowstone erupting?

Don, no not really. But since Ken isn’t coming with H we should move at a faster pace. You know, no lovers quarrels and lighter vehicles this way. No Dave’s either right? I’m not sure why but that should make it go faster too I’d think?

All jokes aside if you look at the map I posted the colored segments are each 80-115 miles roughly. It seems there are gas stations and motels etc at each junction of the colored segments. Im personally hoping for a campground somewhere with showers too maybe? Plenty of campgrounds in WY, a lot will depend on how fast everyone wants to pace ourselves as this map was assembled for 2 wheelers versus 4 wheelers

So after careful consideration we are again shelving this meetup / trip this year.

As of last count I think we were going to have three members here join up. Of which one truck is still to put it mildly going thru an initial shake down which isn’t going very well. We would love to be able to do this but it unfortunately it doesn’t currently feel it is worth the trouble or troubles that could arise.

I guess that makes my final decision easier.  I was trying to decide if I could fit it in to college tours.

I’m willing to do it later in the year but I think we’d need at least 5-7 reliable vehicles to make it worth doing. I had two local guys that were going to come as well. However, they both dropped out in last month. One had a bad dr’s visit (older fellow) and the other is having some personal issues that arose.

As always I’m here and willing to host the initial meetup and always ready to hit the trails.

Yes, this was a tough call. Maybe mostly my fault because of the suburban but also because of the light turn out with respect to the low number who were actually attending. For me, it would have been a major effort just to make the over 1000 mile trip to just get there. With that, I have to put it mildly, lost a bunch (90%) of confidence in that Suburban's ability to get anything done. Putting my family in it and hooking an untested camper to it would be a hail Mary, all or nothing event for me.

That and everyone who was attending except maybe JR has a lot of other stuff going on and with not doing this thing, well we lift the pressure on those folks too.

My fear is that we never get this thing done, and frankly, just looking at the distances involved, it may just prove to be a pipe dream. Having said that, I would love to meet all of you and stretch the legs of a well sorted, tried and true rig...someday.

I think the trip was a lofty goal,   I would like to meet up at some point but honestly have no chance of a trip of that nature.

My family trips are and need to be centered around them at this point in my life I feel.    It’s hard for me to ask my already over extended wife to let me run off for a few days. Also don’t see my littles in a spot to follow me on a big adventure for a few years with out me loosing my mind.

I still would like to come camp at Dons place.    The road trip there would be fun, lots of places along the way to see, and a great end destination. The cost wouldn’t be but fuel and food, the places for services along the way would b plentiful. Kentucky is more centered I think for folks except JR who is at the most extreme end of the USA.

?????? Thoughts ??

Dave, I would welcome that idea...of a meet up at my farm. As early as this fall or next warm season, or ???
I am getting less and less primitive there. Would obviously have two floors of a shed to "Camp" in and the entire barn. Bon fire, cook outs, wheeling or hiking on the farm, or a day trip from the farm to some memorable place...Yea, I'd be open

So we are down to 3 RM right now?

My boy is looking forward to it as I. He passed on boyscout camp for this. He reminded me today showers must happen after a couple days at RR with me.

Nate has to show up just to bring food!

JR, if you read the latest posts it has been postponed / cancelled once again. Several things have contributed to this but mainly not enough interest. Between vehicle issues of reliability, one gentleman’s health in question and some personal issues with another the guys who had committed had bowed out one at a time.

I was reading how a few backed out and the vehicle issues but thought it was still on.

Just got back from the Ridge.
